For about a week now I’ve been trying to a watercolour birthday card but I mess up the lettering every. Single. Time. No matter what it always just looked off. I watched I’m ashamed to admit how many hours of lettering tutorials, looked at free font sites and it still looked like crap. I finally stumbled onto your video and, at the risk of sounding like one of those cheesy infomercial testimonials… it’s now 11:45pm, the card is done, lettering and all and I’m pretty sure it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever created. Best part? Not only does the lettering look AMAZING, by changing one or two things I was doing out for what you did in the video… I wrote 28 beautiful letters big and bold, dead centre on the front of the card in less than ten minutes. I wish I had discovered your channel sooner haha

There’s a specific process that happens in your brain when you’re translating thoughts into written cursive sentences that doesn’t happen with regular printing. They used to teach cursive at my school. Right when my class was supposed to start learning they stopped teaching it. I wanted to learn it so bad and I was really upset so I taught myself! I started writing cursive at school and my teacher said it was unnecessary and said “who taught you that, your grandma?” Even though my grandma had just passed away and she knew that. Needless to say I didn’t like that teacher very much and I don’t think she liked me.... So yeah I’m pretty sure they don’t teach cursive at school anymore but maybe it’s only like that in my area

When I was in school, we learned the McLean Method of writing. This was strange in that your wrist had to be up off the desk, and your last three fingers had to be dragging lightly across the page . @@CreativeCreatorCreates Yes! I will try to do this! Quick answer though (from my experience) - marker paper is great! I personally like Canson marker paper, but there are lots of great ones. The reason that many people (myself included) recommend the HP Laser Jet paper is because it's really good but also so inexpensive compared to marker paper! I can usually get about 500 pages for the same price (or less) as 50 pages of marker paper. But if you are just going for quality, I'd probably use marker paper. Hope that helps!
I totally agree that cursive writing is so important. Most folks print sloppy and when writing any length of time, is uncomfortable. Cursive writing feels more like a fluid movement and helps me think about the content/context more fluidly. Teach your kids to write in cursive. It makes a difference.

I don't know about others but in my place, it's a must to write in cursive from kindergarten until 5th grade. It's been so long since i used cursive, cause I'm in the 9th grade rn😬 you inspired me to learn calligraphy since my notes seems empty😂
Best video I have found so far re: hand lettering. I keep being put off doing this because I am not arty, my writing is messy, I do not have a steady hand when it comes to writing. But I REALLY want pretty writing....lol. I hope this will help x

Haha I get that!! There are also some free practice sheets in the mini course if you haven’t taken that already! It’s a good place to start! The link is howtohandletter.com/minicourse if you need it! 😊
Wow, you are just talented. This video with the techniques really help with learning. I can't imagine why anyone would give you a thumbs down. Thank you for this video.
This helped me so much! Especially when you talked about guessing which strokes to thicken and which strokes to keep thin. I’ve been doing the exact same thing. Thank you so much for clarifying. It’s actually inspired me to step back from actual brush lettering and start faux lettering. What is your opinion on that? Do you think it will help me when I go back to brush lettering?
I use the yt option to speed up or slow down a video. I speed it to up to get to the part where the actual teaching is done. I slow it way down when they actually start demonstrating, that's the place where they always speed everything up. They ought to do the opposite, speed up their warm up chat and slow down their demo part. So I do it for them 😂 it's fun to hear them talk in double fast or double slow time. I don't understand the point of teaching something if nobody can really see it done. Sometimes I think it's just their way of trying to make you think they are more awesome than they are., That's mean to think that, I know, everybody is under a time crunch these days. I love these writing videos, that's a REAL skill, no doubt about it. I need to watch more of them and learn how to do this. I have the worst writing and learning this would really help the rest of my art, it would slow me down too, I'm a little too speedy myself. I think people who hand letter really are awesome. Maybe I'll get that book, it looks like it's just my speed 🤪. Yes, I think I'm going to get that book. I have too many pens with way too much ink still in them. What will people think when I kick the bucket and leave behind a bunch of full pens, how embarrassing! My goal is to leave a bunch of used up art supplies to my posterity.
Thank you for sharing your tips and advices. I’m still practicing but it’s getting there. The only problem I have is the down strokes where it’s thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom if you know what I mean.
This was great! I have a number of your practice sheets and they also help me get a feel for new pens if they work for me or not. Will you be doing a review of the Monami plus pen 3000??? Please...
That is amazing! Thank you so much! And thanks for sharing! I honestly didn’t have them on my list but I’m getting questions about them from this clip so I will for sure add them to my schedule! I love them though!! Thanks for watching.
I just started on my calligraphy journey when lockdown started and while it's fun, it's teaching me a LOT about patience. I get frustrated so easily with this but I don't wanna give up, either.
To me the hardest thing is to keep my letters even. It's so difficult! And also a paper I love is the canson marker paper. It comes in a lilac cover block.
My hand lettering always has an angle on it since my natural hand writing is like italicized and I think I struggle more in writing my letters straight.
I’m struggling finishing an artwork. The lacking part was my enthusiasm and skill or so I thought. Then I began to realize how unnatural the sketchbook is with how easily it is stained and absorbs the pigment dry? It wasn’t me. It was the tool I was using. Im devastated because papers around me are all from China. I wish I knew this before I started.
Thank you so much, very cool and relaxing. I have one question, would you suggest the same styling for other languages too? For example I know French, and most of the time lately I handwrite in French. So I was curious if there are separate techniques for other languages.
Both your video and website are so helpful! Thank you for having free downloads. I need to get the correct paper so my markers don't fray. I'm hooked. You've a new subscriber! 😊
I can’t believe I didn’t pick up that upstroke/downstroke tip watching lettering videos lol after this video I feel like it was so obvious and I’m a dummy lol thank you so much!
It's pretty fun changing styles and making money wasn't something I knew was possible. Nice to look over tips and the income which helps when I love arts and crafts but disability keeps me from jobs I was trained in. Thanks so much for indepth explanation! 🤗❤️👍🏾💯
YOU ARE GREAT! You speak clear & calm, peaceful almost. But more importantly, very relatable & the way you explain things are very simple, to the point & make it super clear.
Hi! I know that this video is a little old. But I have a question: does practicing hand lettering change your handwriting style at all? Because I’d like to use hand lettering for titles and journaling, but I also like my normal handwriting! Especially for my studying notes, I like to keep those simple
Hi there! Thanks so much for watching! I actually do not think that practicing this type of handlettering changes everyday print writing because they are quite different in technique. You will see many people with beautiful calligraphy who have absolutely terrible handwriting lol! I do think that practicing print handwriting similar to how you practice calligraphy can help though! I know when I'm writing a lot, my handwriting tends to be neater. I actually created a worksheet set of my own print writing for that reason, but you can absolutely practice however is easiest for you! I hope that helps!
i actually do think it's important you find the right pen because when I was starting out, some pens were much harder to use and some made my writing look way better. I think it's important you test a lot to find the right one. (The usually have open testers at the store to test
I do agree with that when it comes to perfecting your lettering or finding your style style and I have shared that in tips before, that certain pens just seem to write better. I personally LOVE writing with a sharpie stained. I feel like my lettering always looks better with a sharpie stained + smooth paper. But this is more a beginner tutorial and my point in that part of the video is more for when people think that just buying an expensive pen will help them be able to create without having to practice or learn how to use a brush pen. I think sometimes people get disappointed because they buy a pen someone else used and then realize that it's actually the technique that made their lettering beautiful, not simply an expensive pen. Aside from awful pens that just collapse when you push on them, I think that you can really learn HOW to use the brush pen (i.e. thick & thin strokes) and build up that muscle memory with (almost) any brush pen. But I do agree and I love testing out brush pens to see which ones work best for my own style. I hope that makes sense! Thanks for watching!
@@HowtoHandLetter True, I find that brush pens that are too soft are really hard to use still after I've been lettering for a year. Also, the ones that are too hard don't make my lettering look very good. I really like a medium sized and medium stiffness. You and I have very similar writing styles b/c you are who I learned from. Thanks so much for all your help! I love the bubbly-and less tilted your letters are. Very modern looking. Right now, that's my only style, I haven't really created my own. It's hard once you're stuck on one you like haha. Also, I used to practice by going through the alphabet starting with "a" and writing every word I could think of starting with that letter. (It's harder than you think and sometimes could only think of like 5 words) I dunno if you taught me that or if I came up with that on my own but that would really help with each and every letter of the alphabet. I recommend others to do that too.
Wow, I'm brand new to your channel, and it was an easy instant-subscribe! Thank you for these high quality, realistic tips. I'm a long-time pen-paller (with an art degree even!), but I haven't felt successful in branching away from my few tried and true hand lettering fonts. Thanks for lowering the stakes and giving me a place to start. I'm so excited! 🎉

I've considered doing it myself but was always intimidated. i had some of the thoughts you mentioned beginners often feel. so because of that i have never started. i really appreciate what you said about the brush markers. i hate to keep buying new things every time i try something new. and i have a lot of that type of marker already. thank you for taking the time to talk a little about what beginners should start with and what to expect on the journey forward. and like everything else you want to be good at....practice....practice....practice.

All I was looking for was a fancy way to write "coffee" on a canister label. WOOOOOOOO! Down the rabbit hole I fell! I've since liked and subscribed to your channel, set notifications, saved, and dowloaded. Oh! And I have a great looking "coffee" label. 🤗
Haha! I totally understand - I think that's how we all started (with a project in mind!). Did you ever make your coffee labels!? Thanks for watching!
are the brushpens in the thumbnail the Faber Castell Calligraphy Markers? idk just curious 😂
Yes they are! Good eye! Thanks for watching!

You have such a sweet voice. after my online classes of 6 hrs i watched this to relax...
Thank you! 👏🏻 I'm a newbie to bullet journaling and I've also been guessing when trying to make those beautiful letters.. this has helped so much, I've set aside some practice pages to work with. ❤
I just started and this helps a ton! Especially on how quickly you write. Slow and steady wins the race 👏🏻
i am still a beginner and i also do it by estimation like she did before!🤣
and i also don't know calligraphy yet 😬 and i really wish to learn it!!🤩
so this video helped me sooooooo much!!!🤗😍😍😍
thank you soooo much
oh and i subscribed!!
and even rung the belll!!!😆😆
this is my first time on this channel!!!
and i love it!!!💝
Sooo inspiring!!! I admire your commitment to Excellence and your Generosity of Spirit 🥰. Thank You!!!
I'm still trying to decide whether or not to get the practice sheets. I guess while I debate for another... hour...? day...? week...? month...? I'll binge watch more of your videos 😂

2:55 that’s literally my everyday handwriting beside from the z
Just Talia it’s so pretty ? omg i’m jealous

Just found your channel. You have a fantastic teaching. Very much appreciate your candor and manner. Thank you. 🌸
Thank you for sharing your tips and advices. I’m still practicing but it’s getting there. The only problem I have is the down strokes where it’s thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom if you know what I mean.
I have just recently started learning hand lettering and this helped me so much!
I'm so glad to hear that! Thanks for watching!
How to Hand Letter I bought a pack on Aliexpress so keen to see videos while I wait for them!
Wonderful Tutorial!!! Thank you!!! Such a pleasant voice and pace!!! Kudos!!!
I just started on my calligraphy journey when lockdown started and while it's fun, it's teaching me a LOT about patience. I get frustrated so easily with this but I don't wanna give up, either.
Thanks for explaining. I didn’t realize some videos are fast and the other one are real-time.
To me the hardest thing is to keep my letters even. It's so difficult! And also a paper I love is the canson marker paper. It comes in a lilac cover block.
You’ll get better at it over time 😃
Hi. Thanks. Today is day one and the hard down strokes helps a lot.
You’re welcome! And thanks for watching!
This was so encouraging and straightforward. I think I can do it! You have a gift for teaching.
Yes I agree, it's just very much helpful for all of us
Wow! This is amazing. Your penmanship is amazing. Bravo 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Thank you so much! I love you videos and helpful advice and tips! They have helped me a lot! ❤
Thank you for the instructions…. You are a great teacher.
Seeing your brush pen stay wet and knowing I’m left handed gives me anxiety
Thk s for making me think of this..I'm left handed too.
I am so glad I found this!I just got my brush pens yesterday for my birthday and I am so exited to use these tips 😊
Thanks friend! Helpful show with learning!! 🎨🖌✨
Thank you so much!
You are so relaxing to listen to. Calming! Thanks for the tips!
My hand lettering always has an angle on it since my natural hand writing is like italicized and I think I struggle more in writing my letters straight.
Yah same here
Can't wait to start using these tips, and looking through those resources!!!
Just purchased a bullet journal a few hours ago online, and would you believe it?-UA-cam recommended this video to me!
I died of being satisfied with your lettering
You can be satisfied of yours too 😉
I can’t believe I didn’t pick up that upstroke/downstroke tip watching lettering videos lol after this video I feel like it was so obvious and I’m a dummy lol thank you so much!
5:31 which pen is this? Plz. The lettering looks beautiful.
I'm not really sure but i think its the tombow fudenosuke brush pen
It is the zebra disposable brush pen :)
Omg the real-time versus sped up really gave me an aha moment! Tysm for all of these great tips!!

It's so kind of you to take the time to share with me! Thank you so much & thanks for watching!
@@HowtoHandLetter thank you so much for the feedback! That was very helpful! ❤
So fun to watch! You have beautiful hand writing - I mean hand lettering! 🥰
i actually do think it's important you find the right pen because when I was starting out, some pens were much harder to use and some made my writing look way better.
@@JerseyAccent653 Idk if you'll see this since your comment is a year old but what are your top 3 favorite pens or markers to use currently??
Wow, I'm brand new to your channel, and it was an easy instant-subscribe! Thank you for these high quality, realistic tips. I'm a long-time pen-paller (with an art degree even!), but I haven't felt successful in branching away from my few tried and true hand lettering fonts. I'm at a stage in life where I can afford to look at brush pens and nice paper now, but the market has exploded in the last twenty years and the array of options has become overwhelming. Thanks for lowering the stakes and giving me a place to start. I'm so excited! 🎉
It seems easy and yet my writing doesn't even look good in letter. 🤣
hello!
this video popped up on my home page, not sure why, and i thought 'why not' so i watched it.
very informative! i keep searching free font sites to try and find the look i want for the cards that i make.
Can u review pilot parallel pen plss!! 😊 😊
i learned this by myself and it was hard at first but its good and readable now ❤

My best friends are pandas it’s the Monami plus pen! They’re really cheap so I wasn’t sure how they’d work but I really like them! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much! I l love your videos so much. They’ve really helped me improve 😊
Quite long video but really impressive! Thank you for sharing wonderful advice!
When she was writing abcd in cursive I thought she wrote y instead of ij
So much great info, thank you. I appreciate you discussing video speed time! Calligraphy and lettering is a slow practice.
Thank you so much!
