tips for zebra mildliners✔️ 1) highlight first: but if you’re like me and hate to do it there’s another way to prevent smudges 2) write all your notes THEN go back and highlight ...typically the pens need like 5 mins to sit before you should highlight them with the mild-liners so there is no smudge... 3) apply LITTLE pressure ...i find that the more pressure you apply or the more times you highlight over the pen the more smears... 4) the pastel pack( orange blue yellow and pink) smears the most in comparison to the pack with (grey blue purple and red)
Tip (for Muji): just write out whatever u need to write, by the time u are done, the pen should be dried enough to be highlighted. they also have a new version, the pen tip for the capped one got longer, so it’s easier to write with. I have loved muji for the longest time and I’m too scared to move on and find a better pen when I love this one so much, so I found ways around the muji’s pens weaknesses.
Lol I love muji and got addicted like this month. I never had a smudge problem so they must have updated the ink. Now they are the only pens I will bulk buy even though they're not the cheapest of the lot in the vid.
Yess Muji is my go to pen, I don't think I can use any other pens unless their Muji branded, usually I wait for the ink to dry for 5 seconds and then highlight. Honestly I love the cap ones, I guess its comfortable for me to grip it because my finger has formed around the shape of it already lol.
For me, my muji gel pens have been absolutely fine at ink smudging. I could write something (with both my 0.5/0.7 pens) and highlight it instantly and they would never smudge. I don't know why so many people have this problem.
My absolute favorite is the Sharpie Gel pen. As an artist, I use it to line almost all of my art. It's completely smudge proof, and really smooth. As someone with tourettes, forgiving pens are REALLY important, and this pen is the best I've ever found for doing lining with my condition.
@@kyak9089 Pilot Frixion highlighters don’t smudge at all, you may not even need to highlight before writing. Not sure about other erasable highlighters.
@@raydai9541 they do smudge with the pens i use, may be because i dont wait for the ink to dry, thanks for sharing though, i may switch pens. (i use muji pens)
For me the Pilot Hi-Tec-C is a god send, as I have a tendency to add really tiny details when drawing and this is the only pen with a small enough tip for that
For the finest possible line you should consider learning to use drawing pens with disposable nibs. The Hunt's #102 Crow Quill and the Zebra G-nib are very popular for drawing. I do not draw but I sometimes use the 102 for lettering, and with the right paper and ink combination I can get lines that are something like 0.1 mm, and better yet with just changing the hand pressure I can vary it up to perhaps 0.4 or 0.5mm pretty easily. For inks you have a lot of options, you can go with old school India ink (Speedball super black, Higgins, Dr. Ph Martin) or newer inks with micropigments (ZIG, Platinum, Deleter, Rohrer & Klinger).
@@Alicia-go7tlI mean I bet people on other channels definitely use it but I watch channels such as StudyQuill, Study to Success and of course Emily use Pentel Energel, Papermate inkjoy and Zebra Sarasa.
I use the sharpie gel pens and I love them! they don't smudge after you highlight them and they have a great ink flow. they are about 1 dollar per pen but if you get them in a pack it is cheaper. the grip is also great!
I really love that you consider lefties. My hubby and myself are lefties and my whole life I’ve experienced problems with art and writing supplies. Ty! ✨
I love that you included whether the pens were lefty friendly or not! Most forget about the lefties lol. Anyways, i might get the pilot for cost, grip, and it also seemed smooth enough for my preference.

My all-time favorite pens (black and multicolored) are the BIC Cristal (Spelled just like that) 1.6 mm. I bought a 24 pack of just the black ones about two years ago and am still LOVING them lol
You should try a fountain pen! A twsbi eco with an extra fine nib is perfect for long periods of writing due to a large ink capacity, it costs around $30 so it is inexpensive for a pen that you can continuously refill I used mine through college
i JUST bought the zebra sarasa mark on and seeing that it doesn't smudge made me so happy cause my favourite pen, the pentel energel, ran out of ink and had no refills so all my notes since have been smudged!!!!! this is a relief because i write very fast and tend to smudge my own notes just by rubbing on them and I'm not even left handed.
Uni-ball Signo DX 0.38 and Uni-ball Signo Ultra Micro 207 - My "go to" pens. Similar to the Pilot G-2, but I find that uniball is a bit smoother. Ink for for Pilot G-2 flows a bit faster - smudges a bit more for the way I write.
sarasa mark ons are my favourite at the moment :) they're smooth and look great, but also dry on the paper really fast and don't smudge even with stabilo boss or mildliners :)
I'm only in grade school still but I struggle with studying so I've tried to make my notes prettier or more aesthetic to help me memorize the material. Finding what kind of pens that would fit me really helps! :)
Tip for the highlight part, you can use any pen, just highlight the space BEFORE you write, you have to pre determine how long the word is but it’s very helpful
this was great! thanks so much for the help! I'm a lefty so i got the mark on even before i saw it was the winner! my favorite part about the video though is the VIBE imma go binge all of your videos now
I feel like the best black pens I've ever had are those 10 peso(around ⅕ of a US dollar) ones that you would find in the palengke/grocery store. Doesn't look very fancy but they don't smudge, writes smoothly and lasts for quite a long time
I recommend Pentel energel because I think it’s serially smooth and there is a lot of different designs and it works well with most highlighters except mildliners (it’s my opinion)
same i used the pink and white flower design 0.5 blue for note taking. highlighters, the mild liners for instance, it smudges sometimes or the rest of times, it don't so i don't know 😅
I highly recommend using Jet Stream 0.5 pen!! I personally don't like when the ink is too smooth as it's hard to write neatly, but Jet Stream has a smooth yet stable glide to it and DOES NOT SMUDGE AT ALL!!!! I'm not even kidding, this pen never smudges, even with mildliners.
Love pilot high-tec-c because if you're patient enough to let it dry, the ink can handle gouache or even watercolor. It depends on the paper though because some paper don't take ink well that much.
I watch this video.. and some with the same topic before sleep. I love pens.. since highschool. Forgot about that hobby since 2015 when I do most work digitally, due to its practical for mobility & accessibility. And pandemic push me back to this hobby.. Happy writing than watching blue ray screen all the time.. this kind of video become therapeutic session for me. 😊
i actually love muji pens, they're super comfortable for me because i always hold pens super far down at the end. sometimes the little edge digs into my finger a bit but i really only notice that if i write with them all day
Sorry for my poor English👩🏻💻 I’m a Japanese high school student. Your video is so easy to understand. I like stationary especially Pentel. I highly recommend you to use Energel !!
Thank you for making this video! I'm now planning to buy the Sarasa Mark On! I hope It's my best choice, since I've spent 20 dollars for "the best pens"
Most gel pens will smudge when you use a highlighter over the top of them but these seem to have very minimal smudging as for the grip being uncomfortable? try adjusting the way you hold it with your fingers
smudge in water or not: no: sarasa (except dry), muji, pilot juice yes: sarasa dry, energel, pilot juice, pilot g2 this is from memory and from personal experience only. i think it might be good to keep this in mind if you want to use it for journaling.
I have the pentel energel 0.5 it is pretty smooth and makes my work so neat ut is also smudge proof However i do find that it runs out pretty fast, idk if it’s just me or if thats how all pens are But i brought a 6 pack in august 2022 i think and they all ran out ( using them one after another) a few weeks ago (early January 2023) I am using my backup other pens rk and is wondering whether to buy the pentel again since there is only 6 and it is about £10 for the pack (of six)
There was 199 comments and it bothered me so- Great video!! I’ll definitely be buying Zebra sarasa 0.4 mm! My teachers talk super fast so I need one that won’t smudge 😊
I use Pentel Energel 0.4mm. It's cheap, sturdy, pretty cool design, needle-pointed but no cap, which is perfect because I tend to lose them 😅 Used to wear pricy Pilot Hitech but when I drop them, the needle point bends easily and the ink won't come out.
anything by pilot is my go-to, right now i have a set of pilot color glitter pens that i use in my school planner, they come in pink, purple, blue, turquoise, and black and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! they dry very quickly, they don’t bleed, i’ve been using the same pens that i got at the beginning of last year so they last really long! i also have a set of pilot erasable highlighters and those are just as amazing (and erasable!!!!)
The best pen ive ever used is sarasa 1.0,it lasts long, and when it falls it doesnt stop working. A tip for highlighter is to actually use the highlighter first then use the pen, its pretty complicated but it looks better
OHTO Fude Ballpoint Pen Extra Bold, 1.5mm. Fantastically only, bold lines I love these pens, they write better then most gel pens however they're expensive. If I could get them for about half the price I'd only use these. LIGHTWEIGHT & GOOD QUALITY I have bought similar pens but this is by far the BEST & MY FAVORITE. The smoothness as it glides across paper is unmistakably comfortable and the boldness of the ink is remarkable. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product!!!!!!!!! The Best
(And this is not a hate comment i just love your channel you make amazing contents but i was having a doubt to buy zebra sarasa mark on cuz somtimes you say it is super smooth but somtimes you say it is not as smooth so i was just having a doubt and i just wanna clear it and thats it :)
it's sMooOOtHH. yeahh when I do my voiceovers, it's a freestyle, no script or outline, so I just say whatever comes to my mind when I look at the video LOL. But it is smooth, however, not as smooth as the normal zebra sarasa ;)

Uni-ball Signo DX 0.38 and Uni-ball Signo Ultra Micro 207 - My "go to" pens. Similar to the Pilot G-2, but I find that uniball is a bit smoother. Ink for for Pilot G-2 flows a bit faster - smudges a bit more for the way I write.
ooooh cool!
I’m glad I found a video that validates adoration for(and slight obsession with) Sarasa Pens😅 It’s literally the only pen I use
a seven minute video about black pens and yet im glued to it
sarasa mark ons are my favourite at the moment :)
they're smooth and look great, but also dry on the paper really fast and don't smudge even with stabilo boss or mildliners :)
Thanks for sharing!
I'm only in grade school still but I struggle with studying so I've tried to make my notes prettier or more aesthetic to help me memorize the material. Finding what kind of pens that would fit me really helps! :)
What model is that clear drawer organizer? 0:04
Tip for the highlight part, you can use any pen, just highlight the space BEFORE you write, you have to pre determine how long the word is but it’s very helpful
Nice! I like personally the uniball signo DX for fine line writing and the zebra sarasa dry for normal writing for a lefie!
this was great! thanks so much for the help!
Doesn't look very fancy but they don't smudge, writes smoothly and lasts for quite a long time
Great roundup! Lots of factors in play, nice to see your take on some good planner pen options.
My personal favorites are zebra sarasa for writing ❤️ and steadtler fineliner for drawing ❤️
You can try to use slick paper if you find a pen ink flow is too rich.
Love pilot high-tec-c because if you're patient enough to let it dry, the ink can handle gouache or even watercolor. It depends on the paper though because some paper don't take ink well that much.
I was trying to find some! Thank you for making this video, it is also really aesthetic! ✨
i actually love muji pens, they're super comfortable for me because i always hold pens super far down at the end. sometimes the little edge digs into my finger a bit but i really only notice that if i write with them all day
Sorry for my poor English👩🏻💻
I’m a Japanese high school student.
Your video is so easy to understand.
I like stationary especially Pentel.
I highly recommend you to use Energel !!
When i was still in school the pen that works for me is the Pilot G-tech only.... Now kids has sooooo many pens to choose from!! 😍😍😍😍
Thank you for making this video! I'm now planning to buy the Sarasa Mark On!
I hope It's my best choice, since I've spent 20 dollars for "the best pens"
Most gel pens will smudge when you use a highlighter over the top of them but these seem to have very minimal smudging as for the grip being uncomfortable? try adjusting the way you hold it with your fingers
smudge in water or not:
no: sarasa (except dry), muji, pilot juice
yes: sarasa dry, energel, pilot juice, pilot g2
this is from memory and from personal experience only. i think it might be good to keep this in mind if you want to use it for journaling.
I have the pentel energel 0.5 it is pretty smooth and makes my work so neat ut is also smudge proof
However i do find that it runs out pretty fast, idk if it’s just me or if thats how all pens are
But i brought a 6 pack in august 2022 i think and they all ran out ( using them one after another) a few weeks ago (early January 2023)
I am using my backup other pens rk and is wondering whether to buy the pentel again since there is only 6 and it is about £10 for the pack (of six)
Has no one talked about how good her handwriting is !?
There was 199 comments and it bothered me so-
Great video!! I’ll definitely be buying Zebra sarasa 0.4 mm! My teachers talk super fast so I need one that won’t smudge 😊
I use Pentel Energel 0.4mm. It's cheap, sturdy, pretty cool design, needle-pointed but no cap, which is perfect because I tend to lose them 😅
Used to wear pricy Pilot Hitech but when I drop them, the needle point bends easily and the ink won't come out.
Oh my! I came here looking for smudge less pens because im a left handed and I found them! Thank you so much ❤️
I actually use 2 of those pens for note taking it just makes my writing better
The Pilot Juice actually the smoothest 0.4mm and it dries very quickly. It's oke of my favorite pen!
anything by pilot is my go-to, right now i have a set of pilot color glitter pens that i use in my school planner, they come in pink, purple, blue, turquoise, and black and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! they dry very quickly, they don’t bleed, i’ve been using the same pens that i got at the beginning of last year so they last really long! i also have a set of pilot erasable highlighters and those are just as amazing (and erasable!!!!)
The best pen ive ever used is sarasa 1.0,it lasts long, and when it falls it doesnt stop working.
A tip for highlighter is to actually use the highlighter first then use the pen, its pretty complicated but it looks better
I DIDN'T KNOW I NEEDED THIS, THANKS A LOT
TYSM U LITERALLY SAVED MY HW LIFE BRO
I got the Pental energel X BLN105 gel pen 0.5mm black bc it didn’t have the exact and bro it’s majestic
I write mainly with 0.7 energel pens and to prevent the smudging with mildliners I highlight after I finish writing the whole page
Nothing beats MUJI 🙂❤️
OHTO Fude Ballpoint Pen Extra Bold, 1.5mm. Fantastically only, bold lines
I love these pens, they write better then most gel pens however they're expensive. If I could get them for about half the price I'd only use these.
LIGHTWEIGHT & GOOD QUALITY
I have bought similar pens but this is by far the BEST & MY FAVORITE. The smoothness as it glides across paper is unmistakably comfortable and the boldness of the ink is remarkable. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product!!!!!!!!! The Best
In 1:35 you say zebra sarasa mark on is not as smooth but in 6:48 you say it is super smooth? So is it smooth or not smooth???
(And this is not a hate comment i just love your channel you make amazing contents but i was having a doubt to buy zebra sarasa mark on cuz somtimes you say it is super smooth but somtimes you say it is not as smooth so i was just having a doubt and i just wanna clear it and thats it :)
it's sMooOOtHH. yeahh when I do my voiceovers, it's a freestyle, no script or outline, so I just say whatever comes to my mind when I look at the video LOL. But it is smooth, however, not as smooth as the normal zebra sarasa ;)
Awww you replayed to my comment ❤️😍😘 thank you so much right now I am going to order it❤️, and I know,I have some weird speaking habit like i say yea a lot like a LOoOoT
loved this🥰😍
aw thank u 💕
Thanks that was useful actually.
Thank you for sharing ☺️
Your hand writing though 🥰👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Tbh my favorite pen is the pentel energel, maybe because I haven’t tried the others ones.
I use the pilot-G blue ink pen, I can confirm it's so great! And I also use the altitude pens found in target! Not the best but still nice
After watching your review (plus another) I purchased the 5 pack of vintage Sarasa pens (from Australian Amazon). Great colours and so smoooth😆
Thank you
The first one, i use it all the time and it really works. mildliners smudge a lot so yeah and also u just need to wait a lil before highlighting.
I’ve been using mark on for several years now, the best pen!!!
can you make another video what’s on your iPad! I love seeing the new theme all the time! It inspires me loads! xx
suprisingly a good reveiw video for comic book artists like myself. Thanks!
I’m left handed and I write a lot of notes and highlight a lot so I’m looking for a good pen for this coming year, this helped thanks
Parker Jotter (available with black ink, not just blue) Zebra F301/F701, Fisher Space Pen. If on a strict no frills low dollar budget, BiC Crystal stick pen.
I love the Pilot G-2 it writes so nice!
