I can't be the only person who finds watching her use these pens SO relaxing. Its not the sound of the pens, I don't like that sound at all. Its the way she moves the pen so smoothly and with no mistakes along with her calming voice. I can't even write in a card with out doing a ruff draft on another piece of paper. LOL

Thanks for such a thorough review! I have used Tombow, Staedtler Mars & Marvy Le Plume II, but not for lettering. I have used these watercolor brush markers for coloring books and pre-printed images. Like you, I have found Tombow to be the highest quality overall. Marvy Le Plume II colors are vivid and super intense, so much so that it can make delicate blending more difficult. Plus the fine point tip is very hard and can easily pill the paper. I rarely used them and don’t use the fine tips that much on any markers. The Staedtler Mars brush markers are very good in terms of beautiful vivid colors and great blendability. The brush end was not as long and maybe not as flexible as Tombow, but that doesnt bother me that much. I had two big problems with SM: As far as I know, you can only purchase sets and there are NO individual marker colors available. This is a big let down and negative in my opinion and virtually guarantees that I won’t be purchasing SMs again. This was particularly annoying as I fell in love with their light blue turquoise and used it a lot and really wanted more of it, but couldn’t get it without buying another entire set. The 2nd negative was that when I stopped using SMs and started using Tombows, I stored the SMs for a good long while in the original plastic storage. When I pulled them out to use again, I found a fuzzy growth around the brush end of most of the markers. I think you mentioned something about this occurring in some markers? You attributed it to some chemical change related to “salts?” I just thought of it as developing mold-like growth because the markers were kept in my basement under the couch. But whatever it is, it seems to be a flaw in SMs color formulations. And all of my other markers are kept in the basement too and have never developed any fuzzy growth. I just wiped off the fuzz and could still use them, but still, this can’t be a good thing. I think you said that this chemical change results in making the colors less vibrant or something? I didn’t really use them again that much to tell the difference. Whew! That’s it. I just wanted to pass on my coloring experience with the brands noted. Thanks again for your helpful reviews!

I also loooove the Staedler colors! So vibrant! I found this brand: Edding. They are SO SO good. Definitely my favorites for practicing. The nib doesn't fray quickly, the're firm but bounce back, super thin lines and perfect thicks. I'm obsessed! I found them at my local art store for just $15 for a pack of 10. Worth it. I also have a ton of Tombows that i try not to use because i'm afraid of fraying them lol. ugh... the struggle is real

A REALLY good watercolor paper you could use for your pens...guaranteed not to fray your tips because it is smooth as butter is the " Fabriano Studio Watercolor" paper. Hot press! It is only 25% cotton so the price point is great! I paid $25 for 50 sheets on Amazon. A tip for you on the pen that had the fine liner tip on one end....take the time to fill the area in completely like you did with the other pens with larger nibs and you will get better movement out of your color. I have the Arteza water based Inkonic 120 set of fine liners...same nib as the pen you didn't like...and I use them for watercolor all the time. Even on regular cardstock. Some pens it's how you lay the medium down on the paper. Hope that helps! Great video! Thanks so much!

I like to use my few waterbased tombow´s like watercolor and not only for artful writing ...
I like to create fluffy watercoloreffects and I can mixing the colors what I need on any water-resist place, sometimes is also a combination with a waterbrush on watercolor paper very useful.
just for fun > a few dot´s are enough and you can get awesome pretty flowers with a little bit water 😊
I know that not all brushpen´s from other brands are in the same good quality with both tips on each end.

Honestly I've never had a tombow brush pen nib fray but the ink has run out on two so far. To be fair I usually use them for colouring and not handlettering but it's nice to see other experiences.

RIVERTHOUGHTS I’ve had my black tombow for over a year. I don’t use it all the time because I have other brush pens I prefer in black, but I definitely have used it a lot. I’ve even used it to color entire pages black. It’s slightly less inky, but still works well, and there’s no noticeable fraying.
I would say the ink has lasted on this brush pen more than any other brush pen I’ve used (except Crayola- they last awhile too, but I’m not a huge fan of the nibs.)

I just did a sketch using Tombow Dual Brush Pens and I love their colors but they tore into the paper of my bullet journal made with sturdy professional acid free paper, which promises no ghosting or bleeding. Very vibrant sketch however. I love the Arteza fine liners but they are not dual, and they are not brushes. I usually use artists sketchbooks but I just began my bullet journal journey.

do you use the Koi brush pens? I like the feel, they aren't dual tipped, and the Arteza brush pens are another good choice. Rhodia paper and the smooth Fabriano paper seem to work, but fraying .... there's got to be an inventive way to fix our many nibs... kind of like a pencil sharpener shape with fuzz remover adjustable 'blades' ... that would be a very worthwhile invention... not a tombow fan, with the exception of their monotwin dual point marker, and fudenosuke brush pens... more practice would help, but i love the pentel brush pens, they're easier to work with. And the Sakura, faber castell, and artist loft brush pens are great for more art-y coloring than writing...like the colors and varieties, sort of like different ink pads for art jouralling, varieties in color palettes and water- vs alcohol- vs india ink vs whatever offer more layering options, and shading, but not great (imho) for lettering.

    Hello there Sarah,
such a nice go through of all pens now, I consider buying Tombow though the price is a lot since I'm in India !😊
And I'm so sorry if there is a mistake in the spelling of your name!

I started on Artists Loft, and then got Tombows. I found that the Tombows fray REALLY quickly, which is a big disappointment because they are really expensive. But the tombows have a much better color range. I have heavily used the artists loft, and they are fraying and running out of ink. (The fraying is so bad it’s almost unusable). So I use the artists loft for just casual lettering and Tombows for nice projects.

Oh man! Thanks for sharing your experience!! That’s what I was thinking. Artist loft has less ink but Tombow frays faster. But they both eventually fray because of how the nib is! Thanks for watching and for your feedback! 👍

I use artist’s loft and I love them! From all the videos I’ve watched, tombows look and act exactly like artist’s loft. I use artist’s loft because they are cheaper and from what I see, ( being eleven, I don’t have a lot of money! ) they are the same as tombows. I think I’m going to look for tombows on Amazon now though!

    • @EnsignInsights

The Artist's Loft is a great option for sure! You can find packs of tombow on amazon for cheaper than at Michaels so that's definitely something to look into :) Thanks for watching!

Hey can u do a review of the marvy brush pen, I’m pretty sure they are the same brand as the marvy Le plume 2 and marvy colourin. However they are only 1 sided. I also think that the marvy Le plume 2 has the 2, to show that it has 2 different sides on the pen, the fine tip and the brush tip

Now I looked at it I don’t think that they are for brush lettering as the official website says that they are the “ultimate tool for rubberstamping” but could you still try them out to see if they would work??
