This song is special for the older fans. I called in late to work to get the CD the moment the record store opened, and this being the opening track was what we all heard driving to work. A few of us gathered in the kitchen right away, all saying "OMG THE SCREAM," and I just realized that was over 20 years ago...

I was a tool fan from my teenage years early 2000s. Became a an infantry marine, deployed multiple times and more off the record shit. Took helped me find my way to be a dad and good husband. I still play guitar, bass and drums to this day because of Danny. Helped me keep and create life

The entire Lateralus album is a spiritual journey. Reflection was the song that I connected with most. It changed me in ways I can't explain. Especially being sandwiched between Disposition and Triad, which actually was written as one long song. I have all the albums on vinyl, but I probably spin Lateralus the most. Keep up the great reactions ✌️

@neonom1024 it sounds great to me... It is a little on the quieter side than most 180 gram vinyl, im sure that's due to the artwork on it, but a lil volume or good headphones fixes that

I love that she's found such an interesting and unexpected (for her!) connection here. That's the stuff! That's how this band stays with you through the years, through the decades. You realize the song or the moment _means something to you_ and you let it, and then you have a personal lens to further explore. So great. Love this "series" with you two.

I don't think anyone knows except those present at the recording, but legend has it that the scream was recorded in only one take and that Maynard practically passed out. I certainly know that he could do it live until a few years ago. I heard it in 2007 and it made my skin crawl. Then I listened to it again in 2019 and unfortunately he couldn't take it anymore. I think there are some cool sort've "occultic" tones that can be interpreted through some of the lyrics. Such that "wear the grudge like a crown" within the Planetary "Tree of Life" Uranus rests upon the top as being the "King" and I believe it is well recieved within those schools of thought that he is the Prime Creator or at least most closely mimics this aspect. When you speak upon energetic paths through the body as they relate to the different planetary spheres which influence us Uranus rests just above the head but "not in contact" with the head leading to a common quotation I have heard in different areas of life "Heavy is the head that wears the Crown". So in a sense it can be interpreted at least loosely within this framework as "wear the grudge like a crown" the grudge as you put it being the thing that gives you power but is not necessarily connected directly with your character. This is sort've school of thought can carry through as well within the lyrics referencing Saturn's Ascension. Saturn being the sort of energetic 'overseer' of manifestation, and also being linked heavily with the concepts of Karma. So in reference to "Saturn Ascends" one can interpret that to mean, as we wear this "Grudge" throughout our lives, we cling to it as a part of character and a thing that defines us, gives us our power in the world, but as we grow we learn that perhaps it is a thing that we can choose to let go. As Saturn Ascends(as we grow) we exert our will and manifest a change in our life sort of embodying that Saturnian energy to erect a change, and perhaps this can link into the concepts of Karma, in that perhaps life events either good or bad have directly shaped the Karmic Cycle that has led us to the realization and in effect created the drive necessary to make said changes. Also within these schools of thought I have heard Saturn referenced as being "The King Maker" so perhaps this also ties back into the opening line of "Wear the Grudge like a Crown". So as we let go of that "grudge" we in effect are losing that thing which we perceived to be granting us power, but in it's place we are replacing it with a conscious or "metaphysical" source of directed willpower and rather than this "grudge" being the crown we in effect are producing our own Crown as we harness that Saturnian energy to in effect allow ourselves to be made "kings" organically. There are the somewhat obvious connotations towards the end about "Give away the stone." I think here we are making the stone synonymous to "the Grudge" which we had established earlier. At this point in the song as we have let go of "the Grudge" we recognize it potentially as being a thing which actually held us back from realizing the things which actually defined us, or held us back from developing into something more than just the identity which had sprung up around our "grudge". "Let the waters kiss and trans-mutate, these leaden grudges into gold." Here painting a picture of the "Crown" which we wore at the beginning of the song being a crown of lead which is arguably an undesirable substance for such a regal adornment(dark, heavy, lacking luster, and in all reality poisonous), and rather drawing from the ancient science of Alchemy(transmutation) turning that "leaden grudge" into one of gold, which is much more befitting of such a regal position of self growth or awareness.
So as we have used the power of Saturn's Ascension we have manifested true and meaningful change within ourselves and within our lives such that the things which once weighed us down, took the luster out of life, and potentially 'poisoned' us. We have effectively changed the base composition of our spirit from that of "lead" to "gold".

The level of blasphemy.., to know this song and stop it right before the build to the scream so that the listener doesn’t feel it’s I release…. 😤😭😂😜
**I do love you for going back in the analysis 😘

It's nice seeing people watching tool...they refused too play 3.5 minute songs so the music industry chose too leave them in the shadows

10:08 - that is exactly why the tool army is so rabid. BTW. 10 years from now, this song will fit again, it’ll just speak to you differently.
As a 30+ year Tool fan - all I can say is - trust.

After seeing Tool live. What is your take now on the band

For me, it sparked a greater appreciation for the band and all of the ridiculously talented individual members. It also inspired me to write music with stronger riffs and bass grooves. As well as try to get back into drumming once I have the opportunity to do so.
For Val, I think it made her much more curious about the group, and more invested in general. And it definitely reaffirmed her love of Pneuma and Danny’s drumming :)

@@urbanshamanproductions9092 thank you for taking the time out to answer the question. I know time signatures can throw people for a loop. Adam Jones did creative work on Jurassic Park and other movies as I'm sure you have heard. Danny is the octopus, seen them 7 times in my life, as a drummer myself.it broke me is a good way. Aenima is my favorite album, before people started to say spiral out, there was learn to swim. Aenima is a great song off the self titled album, Pushit and Euology are top-notch too. Don't sleep on Hooker with a Peen either. That you guys for covering my favorite band. Just been listening since 94

If I may, I would recommend “Third Eye” if you are looking for a psychedelic experience? ;)
