I would say dont even worry about changing your system on your reviews bro. If people wanted to just listen to the song, they should have just done that by themselves instead of clicking a video lol. You do you man. I enjoy your content just the way it is.
I think what those people want is for him to react to it fully without interruptions, letting the buildups and changes to their thing uninterrupted - they don't just "want to listen to the song". I get their point, but I feel my guy WANTS to repeat and get everything AND talk about it immediately, and that might be lost if he doesn't pause! I think people just want the best experience for him, but I'd like them to focus on the positives of the very individual reacts instead of pushing them into a specific way.
To answer some of your questions around 9:00 - Saturn has significant symbolism in themes such as learning hard lessons, unlearning destructive patterns, becoming self-aware, and reaching maturity through experience (Saturn’s orbit takes just under 30 years to reach the position it was in at the time of a person’s birth). The ascension of Saturn symbolizes a hinging point to either evolve or sink deeper into entrenched patterns. Which leads to your other question: “The 1 the ten” likely refers to the Kabbalah tree of life (Jewish mysticism). Choosing the 1 or the 10 position on the tree means choosing between regression back into basic instincts (1) or using the pain of learning to develop and become sovereign (the 10) “Ignorant to the damage done” has to be one of my favorite moments in the song. I interpret his tone as being viscerally angry at the psychological blind spots people use to justify doing horrible things to others. He seems furious that people could be so deeply unaware of the damage they do to themselves and others by refusing to mature and learn. I adore your Tool reactions! Please keep ‘em coming!
You nailed it my friend. My first experience with Saturn return was difficult, challenging and eye opening. Filled with uncomfortable lessons and now I am ready to welcome the next experience. Your explanation is thoughtful and wise.
thank you for this i was just coming down here to answer his same questions because they are the most important about this song and youre awesome for thinking to explain this in the way you did, i learned from it too, so again, thank you, youre awesome
Very astute that return of Saturn is rough for most people and I believe is the reason for the 27 club. After all your return to Saturn starts affecting you around that age. I believe the people in the 27 club had a really bad return to Saturn and they couldn't handle it.
yeah this, so you're in a life phase of potential change, so the grudge that you hold onto as a cornerstone of yourself, is really a lead weight keeping you stuck. So then as in alchemy, it's a time of opportunity to change it into gold, representing enlightenment, to let go of the grudge and become a better self.
The Grudge is possibly the best example of matching lyrical theme and voice performance with the emotions of anger and release in the music that I've ever heard.
I started yesterday and I am hooked! I heard Tool when I was 15 , I remember hearing them for the first time. It was a shocking experience, everything fell into place . Looking at people reacting for the first time brings back memories. although I still feel like it is my first!
His scream towards the end was him letting go of his grudges. So much built up and being let out. Incredible. He then invites us to let go and the final climax of the music is there for us to scream to in response! The lyrics go hand in glove with the musical composition. Great response. I enjoyed it.
This is the opening track, for those of us who got it on CD. I picked it up on the way to work on the release day, as did several other coworkers. We all met in the kitchen right at 9am, all saying "THAT SCREAM!"
“Unable to forgive your scarlet letterman” You can’t forgive those that have judged you either rightly or wrongly. The song is basically let go of your grudges before they consume you.
Hate and anger eat only the angery hater ! Let it go ! Budda taught this lesson as did Jesus , too few have learned this simple thing which includes the hate and anger we have for ourselves at times ! ❤
Man I can't wait to see you react to Rosetta Stoned by Tool bro. I think you will absolutely love it. One of my top 5 songs from these guys. Spiral Out!
To quote a friend of mine, "Danny has the ability to make you feel so comfortable with odd time signatures, that when he goes to 4/4, it just feels glorious."
Well, not sure the relevance here though if any relevance was intended. there is no 4/4 in this song. Even the infamous “breakdown” that might sound a little more normal to most peoples ear. Generally speaking this whole song is in a form of 10 except some small sections like the intro… 10/8 being the most predominant and technically correct I believe.
I love this guy’s Tool reactions. His joy about it is refreshing and contagious. I’ve been a Tool fan since the 90’s and my appreciation for their music only grows bigger as I keep listening. The saying is “you don’t listen to Tool, you experience Tool”. It has a timeless quality, unlike how a lot of music kind of sounds like the decade it came out of. This song is one my favorites, the opening track on every album is always a banger, but really all their songs are 🔥
I watch soooo many reactions to Tool songs and everyone gets caught up in the music (which is awesome); but I'm always thinking to myself, "But have you even thought about what this means?". I love that you talk about the meanings and the lyrics and how the music amplifies the purpose of each section.
The only time I have a problem with people pausing is if they don't skip back at least 5-10 seconds whenever they start it again. This is especially the case with Tool because of how often their music shifts and changes, and how they build things up and down in the song. The worst is when someone pauses it right before a drop or switch-up, and then just unpauses it at the same spot, which ruins the moment in the song. You, my friend, do not do that, and therefore you have my most sincere gratitude 🤘😁
I have come to your Tool reaction party a bit late but am thoroughly enjoying it. I gotta tell you, you made me laugh outloud two times. One was when Maynard did the scream the first time. Your eyes opened wide, you didnt move and you looked straight into the camera like you were saying, "WTF". LOL!! Your not the first and certainly wont be the last. The second time was at the end when just took off your headphones and moved away from the camera. Priceless!!! Absolutely enjoyed it. Is Tool your favorite band now? 😉
You are such a happy breath of fresh air to my day! Tool has been my favorite band since I was 13. Now I am 44 and they are still light years ahead of time and all other music and lyrics! Seeing them live a few times was the BEST "EXPERIENCE" I have EVER had in my life. And trust me- it is and EXPERIENCE, not a concert. Love and peace. Laura from Boston ❤ Be kind, it's easy❤❤
Angry Maynard- " Hooker with a penis". "Ticks & Leeches.". I'm 60, OGT back from 92. I love watching young people discover and fall in love with Tool. Keep it up my young friend.
I think ever Tool fan enjoys seeing other feel the musics for the first time. Before the scream I said this guy doesn’t even know what’s going to happen to his soul
Dude, you make me laugh so much. I usually hate tool reaction videos but I love this so much. I'm addicted to your tool reactions. I've been obsessed with them since '92 and you make me feel like I'm feeling your energy. You seem so genuine and honest. I love seeing a new tool fan being born. I still get goose bumps from listening to them even now. Keep it up buddy.
Maynards Freakish 26 second death scream is unparalleled. I don't know who holds the Grudge against him that he is referring to but WHOA. Any Grudges you have Maynard commands LET THEM GO
When you ask why they aren't more mainstream. We love it just the way it is. Tool sells out concerts within minutes of them going on sale and I've been fortunate enough to see them 7 times already. The great thing is, someone at some point shares Tool with you and sometimes it really clicks. When it clicks, it REALLY clicks, and then they become a lifelong fan.
Lol so true... Happened with me. I literally avoided them as they were described to me as the "modern Pink Floyd." And as a huge Floyd fan I was a bit prissy. However it started with Schism of all tracks, lol one of the weirdest they have, and grew once I learned the Pot by ear as a guitarist but on bass. I was BLOWN AWAY By their insane creativity over a 4/4 with their subdivisions and whatnot. And of course here I am. Lol that was in like 07 or 08 or so. I literally would 0lay Lateralus on repeat every day after getting home from school and fall asleep to it full volume. Lol
One of the things I love about Tool is that they don’t spoon feed the listener anything. “46 and 2” is a great example. They throw things out there and expect the listener to investigate. To search out meaning. To learn…and through that also experience growth. To spiral out and become more than what we previously were. Tool isn’t “turn off the brain and jam”. It demands something of us…and if we do the work it’s SOOO rewarding. Rage Against the Machine is a similar band, seeking to educate and point the listener down a path where they can learn. It’s no surprise, of course, 9:54 that Maynard has worked with them and appeared on one of their songs (as well as their concerts).
We were listening to this live on the radio in our practice room when it aired' un-able to pause it, just had to be in a flow state and our reaction was the same. Pure, primal aggression in that sustained scream. This song has such a fucking impactful message with incredible music to compliment it. An easy favorite from TOOL 🔥
I would say The Grudge is one of my favorites. That scream represents him letting go of his grudges. The outro just leaves me exhausted and emotional every time. Just goes to show that listening to Tool is a journey. Great reaction brother!
Couldn't agree with you more. The way Maynard constructs his lyrics is unbelievable. Like in Parabola where he says "this body holding me, reminds me of my own mortality, embrace this moment, remember we are all eternal, all this pain is an illusion". Definitely my favorite lyricist of all time
19:32-19:56 (end of the song)...i apologize, but i was LMAO at that particular reaction to this...i can't tell you how many times i've seen this EXACT response to this song...thoroughly enjoyed the ever-living EFF out of this!!!
You've definetly become one of my favorite reactors in the past few weeks. Your tool journey has been a lot like mine, just about a month apart too! It's already become my favorite band of all time and has inspired more and deeper emotion than any other music by far. It's hard to explain, but it's like it's the hymns for my dreams and aspirations for who I want to be and what I want to accomplish in this life. I'm getting a tattoo that says tool in the 10000 days font on the side of my ribs. I've been so grateful to my buddy for showing me them. Seriously such a joy to see your journey unfold day by day
Lucky... I've been a fan since about 02 and I am still wanting so bad to get that same tattoo.. one day... and have fun on your journey friend!!! Also, definitely don't neglect checking out A Perfect Circle, all of if but particularly The Thirteenth Step. And also Puscifer to get some of his Comedy side... but definitely check out Puscifer Horizons. About his mother so good, and one of my favorite songs
When you asked "Do you really want a breakdown of the lyrics?" I was nodding so hard in front of my screen! Your view on the WHOLE track is what I come for ❤
This is the first track on what is in my opinion, their masterpiece. I love all the other albums and Lateralus isn’t even always even my favorite Tool album. But it’s always the best. He says, “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
One of my favorite things about Tool is their song writing process. The songs are almost always completely written before a single lyric has been written down. drum, bass, and guitar completed. Then Maynard writes the lyrics.
At 17:00 when he starts talking about how they build the instruments, I’m like oh boy, he has no idea what’s coming. Then 19:20, still gives me chills. One of the best drum performances.
Hip hop and tool often give me the same chills. The way that tool plays with beats, sounds, and time signatures... Is very similar to what rappers do to rhyming schemes and word play. The best music invokes a new kind of feeling and plays with your perception
Pause all you want. I love how you do your reactions. People who want the song can go listen to it elsewhere. You pausing to react often is truly what Fair Use is designed for. You are commenting and analyzing. Keep it up!!!!
10:22 Thats why I come here. That amazing feeling you get sharing somebody's first experience with an amazing song. It's like I'm hearing it for the first time again
Watching you experience TOOL makes my heart soar! Especially since you truly feel it in your soul- and it shows! BTW most TOOL fans don't consider it metal. As far as I'm concerned it has been elevated above genre. ❤
You pausing it for the reaction is what makes it special bro. The bass (Justin Chancellor) is amazing at creating these huge low bass sounds mixed with percussive distortion and high end-then all of the sudden playing it like a guitar with effects or synth. Fuckin crazy.
You got me with the breakdown. Seeing people experience that for the first time is my therapy for the dragon I’ve been chasing since my first dozen listens in 2001.
I always hear reactors listening to this speak the lyrics as "ultimate prison cell". Ive always heard it as "ultimatum prison cell", as if not being able to make that choice to give up on the thing youre holding onto or to be free is where people really get stuck.
Do you bro. I love seeing people find tool. I wish i could go back and hear it for the first time again. You seem to have a good grasp on the lyrics and the music. Keep it up.
This song walks you through the whole process of a grudge, the beginning when they just "get into it" is when the thing that caused the grudge occurred, it's meant to symbolize the anger of "being done dirty" then followed by the stewing when alone and the rest of the stages of a grudge
I grew up on both Tool and hip hop and I had the same thought about the complexity - I would be surprised in the coming years if we don’t start seeing more progressive time signatures in rap. May take a minute but someone will do it well eventually
Your reaction genuinely gave me joy. I try so hard for people to “get” this band and why they are my absolute favorite, and so few do. You understand though. It’s not something that can be explained with words.
Yeah that's a REAL intense song, and it's the freaking start of the album. The rest of the album, as well, working its way through that concept of self-transformation. A lot calmer from there on out, for the most part. It does what it says, it's the deep cathartic release to begin the process.
That sound at the beginning is a circular saw turning on. The edge of the cd had what looked like a saw blade that spun as the cd played. Pretty cool "tool"
I would say dont even worry about changing your system on your reviews bro. If people wanted to just listen to the song, they should have just done that by themselves instead of clicking a video lol. You do you man. I enjoy your content just the way it is.
Yeah this is why reactions are so diverse; it's up to each content creator as to their individual methodology.
Factsssss
I think what those people want is for him to react to it fully without interruptions, letting the buildups and changes to their thing uninterrupted - they don't just "want to listen to the song". I get their point, but I feel my guy WANTS to repeat and get everything AND talk about it immediately, and that might be lost if he doesn't pause!
I think people just want the best experience for him, but I'd like them to focus on the positives of the very individual reacts instead of pushing them into a specific way.
Ultimately, I think Tool would be advocates for peace, love, understanding, growth, and possibly a dick joke or two
Agreed

Hip hop and tool often give me the same chills. The way that tool plays with beats, sounds, and time signatures... Is very similar to what rappers do to rhyming schemes and word play. The best music invokes a new kind of feeling and plays with your perception
I wish I could go back to hearing this song the first time, jealous as hell lol. That tool vibe kicks your ass.
When you say " Let me go back " that's how I feel about them every single time
Pause all you want.
I love watching you react to tool. I wish I could hear their songs for the first time again. Keep it up man much love
Lotion to the ears... amen.
Tool are my fave band in the world and this track is in my top 3 Tool tracks...its just so good..
And I implore you to look up the painting “Saturn Devours Child”. That is referenced as well.
Saw this song live it was incredible they lit the whole stadium up for his scream 😂
This is their opening track for lateralus as well.
Lol I forgot bout that 😅 just madness
Good job Mugs, great reaction, I get so much joy watching someone just get it. Thanks
Incredible reaction. Thoroughly enjoy watching you discover TOOL
Ticks and Leeches bubba, Ticks and Leeches
Love your Tool reactions!!!
They are sooooooo fantastic live
Watching you experience TOOL makes my heart soar! Especially since you truly feel it in your soul- and it shows!
BTW most TOOL fans don't consider it metal. As far as I'm concerned it has been elevated above genre. ❤
You pausing it for the reaction is what makes it special bro.
The bass (Justin Chancellor) is amazing at creating these huge low bass sounds mixed with percussive distortion and high end-then all of the sudden playing it like a guitar with effects or synth. Fuckin crazy.
Some times you never know who is a Tool head waiting to be discovered! lol
Brun you found one of the greatest here. Keep crushing TOOL man.
You got me with the breakdown. Seeing people experience that for the first time is my therapy for the dragon I’ve been chasing since my first dozen listens in 2001.
Saturn ascends… one’s own warrior complex. And so much more.
Keep it up.
No apologies needed. Appreciate you covering this song!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO let go let go let go let go … great reaction 🇮🇪👍🏼🇮🇪
One of the best mixed albums of all time…
welcome to the TOOL family
This song walks you through the whole process of a grudge, the beginning when they just "get into it" is when the thing that caused the grudge occurred, it's meant to symbolize the anger of "being done dirty" then followed by the stewing when alone and the rest of the stages of a grudge
Just to be fair to Hip Hop, Tool makes everything else sound simple :D
Trying not to binge watch all these reactions. They make my heart happy and I can use them sprinkled throughout my life. :)
That sound at the beginning is a circular saw turning on. The edge of the cd had what looked like a saw blade that spun as the cd played. Pretty cool "tool"
Je ne sais quois means a quality that cannot be described or named easily. That’s Tool 💯%
Keep doing what you’re doing. I love seeing people discover music that I love!
That intro was great, chilling listening to you while I play a space game.
My friend See them LIVE! He sounds Identical. Nobody is even close to what Tool Brings
This is the first song I ever heard them play live. Toronto, September 18, 2001
"It sounds like someone is exiting a space ship" is a good overall description of their music lmao :)
Look up this exact song with the blackwater gospel video; insanely fitting artvideo elevating the song to even higher levels
Fire song
7:35 THAT is the exact reason for "Stepping through your Shadow, coming out the other side !
Incredible reactions. Thanks for doing these.
you have no idea, this is a band to watch live.. thee best... there concerts are amazing
