After we built Josh's Secret Office Through a Wardrobe, they intended to put a spare bed in the space outside of it. He mentioned that the room needed to have open floor space for his kids to play. A regular bed would take up that space, and force him to walk around it to get to the office. We were contacted by Rockler about using their murphy bed kit. A murphy bed is a "secret bed" that folds away into a cabinet. This solution keeps the floor space open while providing a place comfortable place for guests to sleep.
The kit comes with a set of plans for a basic wooden cabinet to hide the bed, but Josh used Fusion 360 to add some additional pieces. He used the 3d model of the secret room to ensure that the new murphy bed and cabinetry would fit in the space. We then cut down several pieces of plywood to make up the individual components. The murhpy bed box is made up of several plywood braces sandwiched between two layers of plywood. That platform is attached to two uprights using the hardware kit. Josh made extra sure to follow the listed dimensions so that the hardware would fit the first time. We moved the bed unit into the room while we made the side shelving units.
The two shelving units that will flank the murphy bed are, while quite large, pretty simple. There are two vertical side pieces, pocket holed shelves spaced 12 inches apart, and space at the bottom for three drawers. After modeling the drawers and drawer boxes in Fusion 360, it was really easy to digitally measure the space and plot those markings on the unit. Josh chose European, bottom-mount drawer slides which don't pull out as far as the slide we normally use, but they were less expensive.
The drawer boxes were very simple. We used the same 3/4" material as the rest of the unit glued and nailed together. The faces were also made from the same plywood, but I added edge banding all around the edges. It was one of many elements that required edge banding for this project. The process wasn't that bad because many of the exposed edges were on large pieces, so it went pretty fast. Once the units were completed, Josh countersunk some holes on the mating faces with the murphy bed. The bed box had some hardware that stuck out the side. With the countersunk holes in the shelves, the two pieces can sit flush and be screwed together.
Between the two upright shelving towers, on top of the murphy bed box Josh designed two cabinets. The simples dorrs will hinge upward and stay in place with the help of some gas struts. This space is meant for larger items like extra bedding or suitcase storage for the guests. Three plywood dividers were attached to the upper cap and connected to the top of the murhpy bed box. The doors area a super simple, faux-shaker style that Josh has used before. They are made from 1"x2" pre-primed lumber and a sheet of 1/2" MDF. The MDF is inset 1/4" from the front and give it depth. We pocket holed each piece together to made some cabinet doors. We used some Kreg products to attached the hinges and the pull hardware.
At this point, the entire unit was ready for paint. Josh's wife loves to paint, so she adde two coats of a fancy white paint. Josh bought a full-size mattress and placed it on the hinged platform. The murphy bed kit from Rockler was very easy to adjust the counter balancing action. We also added a charging port for several USB devices in a feature drawer. We had to ensure that the cables were run through the separate units before they were lag-bolted to the studs. After some handles, pulls, paintings, and knick-knacks, the project was finished. - Навчання та стиль
i'd honestly wanna see Bob try to build a house in the sims 4

In a few years, josh's house will have one visible room and the rest will have to be figured out.
Haha.
His kids will have a great time trying to figure their room and a great place to do prank on friends
Next episode he turns it into an escape room..er house.
Lmfao he responds “haha” with a period 😂
Kinda like an escape room but backwards.
I'm not sure if you take video requests/suggestions, but I'd love to see how some of your older pojects have held up and what would you do differently if you did the same thing again again. The project that jumps to mind is the custom drawer system in the back of your SUV.
I really loved seeing Bob and Josh building together. We need more of this!
Working with your friends always makes the project better
Many hands make light work. Plus it looks like fun!

Y'all need a theme song for your secret builds. The "SECRET TUNNEL, SECRET TUNNEL" song from Avatar the Last Airbender kept popping into my head, lol...
Wasn't the rest of that song "...AND DIE!!!"
Is this comment the reason this video popped up in my feed?? Because I was just searching for covers of that song like five minutes ago. (Go check out the I Kill Giants cover, it's sick)
Using blue painters tape to help block out and visual furniture placement is an excellent tip that I need to start using. Also that feature drawer for charging is a great idea!
Glad it was helpful!
"Hey I'm Josh, and I like to make stuff !"
I've said it a few time in some Bits videos.
This turned out great! This came at the right time as I'm getting ready to build a couple of lower cabinets for vanities in our bathrooms. You made the doors easy to understand and build. I've always been intimidated by building cabinets as I never know how much plywood I'll need or how to cut it to get the most out of a sheet.
This looks GREAT! We've been looking for some ways to use a room as a space that can be a bedroom, but also a playroom and this definitely inspires some ideas!
Once again, thank you for uploading this big project in one part! The bed turned out great.
I honestly just don't understand how people decide to dislike this video
They think it’s how they get it to stop showing up. Like they don’t like wood working videos.
I dislike it because of the awful music.
Your channel is getting me through quarantine and is also the inspiration for what I might want to do when I buy my own house one day. You are so cool.
11:11 Recess the USB hub far enough from the edge so devices can be plugged in with the drawer closed. It is a given at some point somebody is going to break a cable otherwise.
Plus the double-sided tape isn't a long-term mounting solution. Physical fasteners for the win.
I made a horizontal Murphy bed a couple of months ago for my guest room. It didn't turned out as beautiful as yours of course but it was my first big undertake and I feel kinda proud hehehe. You guys make it look so easy!! I really need to take your course for planning. Love your channel!
Josh planned this project for a few weeks and worked out all of the design issues in Fusion 360 before we cut a single piece of wood. We try to make efficient use of our time and that happens in the planning.
This is exactly what I was looking for today. Very nice build. A couple of questions though. First, why do all the edge banding if you were going to paint it anyway? Why not just a skim coat of spackle? Also, why not fill the pocket holes on the upswinging door panels? Last, is that a full size bed or queen? I'm looking to do one for a queen and need narrow column storage as well. Great design. Thanks for posting.
I'm setting up a portable home, this is real eye opener, these type of units are available here in Australia via local businesses. Thanks for this video
The motorcycle in the background hurts my heart for Josh.
One day it'll work...one day.

I love watching projects at Josh’s place. His toolset and shop are super relatable. I absolutely loved this project, even if we had to see a motorcycle gathering dust in the corner 😉
His motorcycle looks great, one day he'll get it running.
My shop is like most other peoples except for the forest of walnut.

Super cool to see you guys doing a project together! More of this with all three of you please and thank you
Awesome job guys! Really enjoy seeing the whole team get in on the project! First time in awhile I recall directly seeing Anthony! Shout out to Forby. We know you're still there!
🙋🏻♂️
Nice!!!! I just put one in my tiny home a month ago. Bob, Josh, please do a better job of anticipating my needs a few months in advance! :)
That's so cool! I really want to make one myself, I live in a small house and this would be perfect as a guest bed in the office.
At 11:00, if you had have made a recessed spot underneath the table top, you could have also epoxied in some hidden wireless charging pads. The charge field is actually fairly strong, and will easily make it through a couple of millimeters of wood.
These are my favourite type of videos you do! More home improvement/projects please
Wow. Just amazing. You two are extREMELY talented.
I don't know why but i love this guy SO MUCH, he seems so kind. I really like his voice it's southing. I don't know he's everything 😄
Yes secret bed on the secret office that only 3.03 M subs know about it lol

Spoiler alert! 😜
Hey bob this is crazy to see you make this cause I just finished making a custom horizontal Murphy bed for myself to save some space in my room!
Love Rockler, got a set of drafting table hinges that I needed recently and they work great!
This is awesome. I had no idea they bad murphy bed kits to mount sideways like this. Opens up a big possibility to build one in my sons room for when his friends stay over.

I could do with that for my small room. Would leave loads of floor space when folded away.
Noticed you mounted the USB hub a little to far forward. The cables stop the drawer from fully closing. Too late now though 😊.
Love it, and would love to build the exact one for my office, could you maybe share the cut plan?
For the feature drawer, consider leaving some charging cables attached that are short. Like a lightning, a USB C and micro USB
Yea cuz it’s all type A in there, what if someone rolls in with a type C to whatever cable
I'm in the process of installing a horizontal murphy bed, myself! How funny!
Thanks for the tips on the cabinets, I was kinda worried about how I was going to do it.
Oh man, thank you for doing this. We're expecting our first baby next Spring and our home office is going become the nursery. We had no idea how to move the office into the guest room and keep it functional for both purposes. This is EXTREMELY helpful!
Awesome! Check out the link in the description to get the kit and the plans from Rockler. And Congrats on the baby!
I would love to do a murphy bed one day for our guest room. We have plenty of rooms in the house but I love the idea of a multi-functional/multi-purpose room
I'd like to imagine that Mr. Stuff listens to this home depot music 24/7
Not gonna lie, that kit IS pretty cool. Any time I've ever made a Murphy or Hide-a-bed I've always been working with basic stuff, so it's just been a rectangular box with a hinged lid and you mounted the bottom up against a wall. This seems much nicer, and definitely looks like it works better. I mean, the box bed I made worked fine as a bed, but it's not gonna win any awards.
Great to hear Josh! Have him on camera more in future videos
Very cool! I didn't know Rockler sold those kits, I'll have to check them out. I've been dreaming of adding a Murphy bed to one of my rooms for a while now and they seem like the way to go.
I appreciate the way you went with the secret power drawer. I'm hoping that nobody copies this project but chooses to any sort of power that slides with the drawer. Moving power cords are a big no-no. I wish you had mentioned that as note in the video, just so nobody burns their house down.
Love the finished result!
Hey Bob and Josh. I ran across your channel by accident and I absolutely love it. I’ve spent the entire weekend watching video after video.
Josh’s builds seem a lot more planned and mapped out with his fusion 360 plans, etc. A lot of Bobs projects lately had the idea but were like “I’m not sure how we’re gonna do this but we’ll figure that out as we go along” or something on that line lmao
When we do projects at Josh's house, they have to be more planned out because we don't have access to the same equipment. And planning and project management are some of his strong suits.
Pretty fantastic work, guys!!! 😃
Looks like something I would buy for my own bedroom! 😂
Stay safe there, everybody! 🖖😊
i really loved seeing Bob and Josh building together.
Wow, that's a lot of awesome building in 16 minutes! Nicely done, had to subscribe!
Flawless timing as always Bob/Josh. Gonna be building this too :)
Thanks; i have limited space in one of my rooms, so this idea is perfect. Keep up the great work.
I have a lot of ideas for projects, but have a hard time getting them started. Your Fusion 360 course looks great. I’ve been wanting to learn and use a similar program, but just didn’t have the will to get past the learning curve. With winter coming, I can stay warm and learn something new.
It allows you to better visualize the ideas you have. We love it.
Great video. I love the internal lighting and it's nice to see Josh doing more on camera. Was worried you wouldn't be able to use the USB charger with the drawer closed but you proved me wrong!
More to come!
Looks great. Really like the USB in the draw.
Cool project. Love having Josh on screen more. P.I. Workshop was one of my favorite channels when I first got into watching makers on UA-cam. No offense, Bob. I love you too.
Hi there, great video and gives us a good idea for our house. Question: Which full-size mattress did you use ?
Turned out super cool! Great job once again!
Awesome. Been waiting for you to build a Murphy bed for a long time. Excellent build.
Thank you!
Man, I love this. I desperately need a horizontal murphy bed for my office/guest bedroom, but I’m not handy and I don’t have woodworking tools.
Totally fabulous! Such great skills!
Great looking space, super clean! Also nice to see Josh. We want to make sure Josh sees us, too, so safety glasses please!
Turned out amazing!!! I want to make one!

This project is incredible, I admire your ideas and way of doing things! Thanks for sharing.
Greetings from Mexico!
I had this planned for next year; now it is planned for the end of this year thanks to inspiration. Cheers Bob and Josh.
That's great. Check out the link in the description for the hardware kit!
That was awesome - I think you finally have the skill set to build Gru's secret underground lair now!
Wow this video feels like it was my dad making the project. The way you craft and make is remarkably like my father. Great work!
I was so proud of myself for getting a sofa bed for guests. You all make us regular people look lazy lol
Very cool ideas in here!! Thanks guys and gals for sharing!
I like the bring-your-own-cord lifestyle, but a built-in (or even just included) Qi charger would be great. I also noticed the pocket-hole assembly didn’t go perfectly on the upper left linen cabinet, I feel like that’d draw my eye every time I entered the room... Any plans to plane/sand it flush?
When trimming off the edge trim you could use a old hand planer blade.. which works really well & great video btw 👍🏻
I also have used thier kit. Vertical Queen. Great kit and works great!
Guys you doing amazing work. I wish I could do something like that too.
Turned out very well there keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend keep making
I never thought that you could make horizontal murphy beds but that makes sense and it looks great. That motorbike looks pretty cool too by the way :)
I'm surprised you didn't 3d-print some brackets for that usb hub, is it something you considered?
I did, but it would have taken longer to print. Josh actually went back and hot glued those pieces in place. The tape didn't hold.
Bob, you are so prolific. How do you keep the quality up while making so much?!?!?
The charging drawer with one side missing is just genius!
I wish I had one of these in my new appartment
of all the bloopers I was honestly hoping for, I was waiting for the one where one of y'all found the track plate and go "... it was here the whole time 😑" lmfao. it was the chekhov's gun of the episode y'all.
That being said, super entertaining build, I love seeing complex builds like these come together 🙏
That arrow was added afterwards when Anthony saw the track in the background during the final edit.

oh wow I really need this for my basement when we have company - great build!
This is probably the best murphy bed I've seen. This is a winner!
wonderful job. Do you have a suggestion for a value for a built-in bed like the one in the video?
I'm in Charlotte and I need to make a Murphy bed
The charging drawer is so neat! It's a simple design but man, don't we all wish we had one.
👍🏻 That is very lovely. That is easy to do when you have all the tools to do it.
Josh is great in this. Nice bed, even cooler shop!
Something oddly satisfying/comical about that shot of the two of you with all those drills at 6:31.
this one was really great, thanks!
Would it be possible to bring everything to ceiling height and mold it into the ceiling? If top cabinets were designed to still open freely of course
ILTMS should honestly have like a proper shop at this point. Y'all deserve it
Lmfao
Are our shops not proper?
@@Iliketomakestuff You guys just deserve more space lol
I think he thinks thats your shop. Looks like bob has to do a shop tour, and a farm tour, along with the rest of the maker spaces
@@7R15M3G1 I know the difference between the main shop, Josh's house, and the Farm. I just suggested that they deserve a larger space that is not bob's basement.
Turned out great, awesome job! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks!
Looks great as usual only thing I can see is an issue with the location of the USB hub. Do you intend for it to be closed when in use, if so isn't too far forward to be able to plug anything in without the drawer being in the way? Otherwise, looking great.
Watching you guys do this project was a riveting experience. I want this Murphy bed. It’s perfect. How much did materials cost?
11:32 I would have placed the USB hub further back from that front edge, so you can plug in a USB cable and still be able to close the drawer all the way.
Exactly what I noticed when it was mounted. Not very usable as installed, but a quick fix since it was just taped in place.
That is so cool! I remember wanting to make something like that when I was little
You totally can.
Give your cameraman a raise! I really like the way this video is made
Glad to see the pocket holes, nothing wrong with em. Lots of other tubers make it seem like a mortal sin.
Great video! You just gave me the confidence to try have a crack at it!
You can do it!
Guys, awesome! You need to come to my place and build this Murphy bed in my 2nd BR.
I feel like switching the office and the bedroom would have been a good idea. That way you don't have to walk through a guests bedroom to get to your office. The guest would have to walk through your office but that's a lot less intrusive than a bedroom.
2:46 i saw kyle's sticker back there big fan! of his wood work
