Technically, my house is listed as a 2-bedroom because the huge room upstairs that my boys live in doesn't have a closet. My grandad used that room as his art studio and not as a living space. So, besides adding some space for extra clothes, I am going to increase the value of our home by turning this area into a code-compliant bedroom.
My boys' room is upstairs and the roofs are angled inward. The space behind the pitched roofs is all attic space. This empty space allows us to build into it so we can add the new closet. If you remember the bunk beds we built earlier in this year, you'd see that the wall we are building into also supports the top bunk of one of the beds. Having this as a design constraint, we are going to knock out the rest of that wall leaving the opening for the closet. Excitingly enough, the attic space behind the bunk bed is usable and will connect to the new closet giving the kids an extra playroom.
Because this extra attic space is triangular, I wanted to bring some definition to the new closet. I framed out a small knee wall that would become the back of the closet. So that I didn't entirely block off the rest of the attic, I also framed in an access doorway in the pitched rafters.
To create a space for the closet opening, I had to remove a row of wall studs. Because this wall supported the rafters above it, I had to add a header above the space to support the weight. I laminated some boards together, wedged them at the top of the planned opening, and supported it with two jack studs. all of these new supports were nailed into place. Now, instead of looking at the back of a framed wall, we were now left with a big square of unsupported drywall.
Now then, to block a lot of this heat from getting into the closet space and affecting he temperature of the room, I had to add a bunch of insulation. I used R13 pink fiberglass insulation stapled between the studs and the rafters. Where the fiberglass wouldn't work, I sprayed in some high-expansion foam to seal up all of the remaining gaps from the rest of the attic.
This step seems pretty self-explanatory. But I was waiting to open up the space until we had semi-safe area. I didn't want to open up a potentially-dangerous job site to my boys' room for them to wander into when I wasn't around. Before we smashed the wall down, I scored the area around the opening with a utility knife so that the drywall would blowout and ruin the parts that would remain.
But now is the time! I gathered the kids and we smashed through the wall together! It was pretty fun. Scoring the wall really helped the drywall break into manageable chucks for easy disposal and there wasn't a huge mess to clean up.
For this project, I tried to avoid it at all costs but the reality of a finished closet/playroom without drywall wouldn't have worked. In the video, I didn't go into detail about putting up drywall, there are plenty of resources to help with that terrible process. I did eventually finish the drywall and my wife gave it a few coats of paint.
In a regular closet, you can attach little cups to either parallel wall to hold a long rod. In our case, the bracket would have to attach the the pitched ceiling and hold a rod down from it. The easiest solution we found was to get two simple 90-degree metal brackets, attach them to the angled ceiling, and add a large wooden dowel to the hanging ends. This solution worked really well and by cutting a slot into the dowel and inserting the metal bracket, it kept the kids from hitting their heads on an exposed metal corner.
This project was a big one. It had a lot of challenges and a lot project considerations. If you have a big construction project like this, you have to consider all of the hard parts and the tedious pieces before you can smash things and pick paint colors. Also, I am making some bi-fold doors for the closet, so look out for those as well. MUSIC: share.epidemics...

Your kids are Lucky to have a dad like you
so true tho

Yea I one a dad like you but my dad only go home on Saturday Sunday 😭
@@MischievousMoth lmao no wonder you dont have a dad
i love how he is teaching his daughter to lay the flooring and use the airnailer....that's an awesome dad, teaching the kiddos a trade that will carry them through life
PSA: if you cover your bare arms with baby powder or talc it will fill your pores and prevent fibreglass particles from irritating your skin:)
Random Question: Are your initials actually LK and your name is Lissa/Lisa? Beause mine are!!
Edit: Your 'PSA' is really helpful! I'll use it sometime!
Lissa K thankyou I will try that at work tomorrow. You have just made my job a hell od a lot less hateful 😊 thankyou
I thought talc powder caused cancer in some people...
@@taylorbritt499 The way I figure it. Everything causes cancer these days. Where I'm from people think that the water is causing it too. So your probably right
@@joesoap6078 I just remember seeing one of those "public service announcement" things on TV about talc powder and it causing some kinda health issue. May not have been cancer, but maybe it was. Who knows 🤷
I know these longer videos are incredibly time consuming to both shoot and edit but they provide such a vast amount of information and are very entertaining...so, thank you! I learned a few things and it gave me some more confidence about an upcoming home project I need to work on.
Best part is @ 18:36 when you involved your daughter. My daughter who is turning 7 soon, has taken major interest in all the projects daddy has been doing around the house. She has learned how to cut the grass, paint, hang doors, use a screwdriver... Its the best feeling in the world when you are working in one area and look over to see your child working in another. Hats off to all the dads and moms whom are teaching their children how to repair rather than replace.
Great idea. I can see having segments with his daughter. We all know having someone help is great, but when you need to get something done and need to focus, it can be tricky with an underskilled person in the room.
Great job Dad! Growing up I wanted to learn how to use the lawn mower, but I was told no because I'm a girl & my parents considered it a boy's chore.
I have 3 girls and 1 boy. 7 year old twins and 6 year old twins. The youngest twins are girls and are very girly girls. My older (by 11 months) twins are boy and girl. My son who is autistic is too busy breaking things for me to fix and his twin sister is right beside me looking at it saying "ya dad, you can fix that...AGAIN" Life is good, I am blessed even though the world wont slow down long enough for me to know which way is up.
Woah! That's amazing!
Awwhhh I hope my baby girl is like that
The next homeowner of that house is gonna have some nice add ons.
Guess Who its going to be me
I hope he leaves a bunch of notes and sets it up as a treasure hunt, with the room as the prize

I honestly think what makes this channel different, aside from the host being really personable is the willingness and commitment to showing and keeping the 'plan changed' and 'we can't film this part, oh wait we can film this' in the final edit. seriously it makes me believe and trust this more than any traditional DIY style videos/content.
If 10 years of success from now you find yourself wondering where you could have gone wrong, it will be from losing that personal stuff that makes you a real person instead of just a host of a show.
I love your channel i hope the best for you, and all your endeavors.
and i love how you get the kids involved! so important to teach them that they can do their own things and not need contractors all the time
Imagine being his kid, and then growing up and re designing that room to be like a cute room you can chill and listen to music in, like put fairy lights in there and make it cozy (I dunno that’s just what I was thinking of while watching this)

May I just say, it's amazing that you allow your daughter to assist and that you're teaching her about this sort of thing. Woodworking and hardware craftsmanship are stereotypical "Male" skills, and it's exhausting being a female and being told "You can't do that, you're a girl." So two high-fives to you for teaching her that yes she's a girl, and yes she can do it. ^_^
Laura Jacques you are right
all he did was let them kick out the jib
@@benjaminrobinson6782 But if you were a girl and you'd had simple tools like hammers and screwdrivers swiped out of your hands just because you were a girl, and then someone let you do that? You'd be ecstatic! Biology should not be a boundary.
really? I didn't find this unusual? My father always included my sister in anything he was doing that we were interested in. I am in my 50s. I thought most fathers did that.
Literally no one says that you are keeping the stereo type going by saying that.
I did a similar room and was getting a quote from a tradie for other work but he insisted on quoting for this attic room too because I 'didn't know what I was doing' (me=senior female and he had a problem with women, haha). He planned to cut through the dry wall with a reciprocating saw 'without' checking power cable location even though power outlets and light switches were along that wall. Did it myself (not with a recip saw) and sure enough 240v cables exactly where he planned to cut and not turn off the mains power. Good on you for teaching your daughter stuff like this, we (females) are just as capable. Alongside my DH (we work side-by-side as equals) we built our own 2-storey house with no prior experience, so it can be done and the satisfaction is huge!!
High Five to your daughter. Nice to see the next generation stepping up.
Michael Kieweg agreed!
It's great that you have your kids involved, even greater that you let them use the tools.
Love the smile he has when his daughter was helping him. Its so important for girls to learn home repair skills, and its even better when your dad gets to teach you.

This is crazy. I always thought that kind of work was for ultra specialized pros only. You're showing me that if you're willing to put the hours in, it's de definitly possible. Outstanding work.
Yeah Sure..... Go in your attic and start removing studs from the walls and braces from the roof without any kind of experience, good luck with that. You can tell this guy know what he is doing, he probably used to be a renovator or a framer.

Thanks for promoting the use of safety equipment! As a safety professional, I always appreciate when people do things correctly. May I offer a piece of advice. When I mucked about with insulation in south Texas I used baking powder on my arms, legs, neck, etc. etc., since it is supposedly was fine enough to stop the fibers from getting under your skin, then rinsed off with cold water rubbing my arm from top down, it seemed to work for me.

If Americans would build proper houses you wouldnt have such a large space left without a use for it in the first place. Also, the fact that I could literally walk into a hardware store nearby and buy everything to build a house the way Americans do is sad
There have been several questions about moisture under the roof. It’s hard to explain but the rafters that I insulated between are NOT the roof (with sheathing and shingles). That is another layer up above that section. There’s not go by to be any issue with mold or moisture.
Class video! Best regards MrHandwerk :)
Still, if the outside (behind the insulation) gets colder as the room temperature and you havn't sealed the insulation air-tight, warm air might get behind the insulation (because of slight air pressure differences) where the moisture it contains condenses on the colder surfaces … Or did I miss something that would prevent that?

That wall punch though...... Sweet AF
A+ Sound effect.
Yeah man, at first I thought it was just photoshopped lmao
AF = Scored an A and an F? WHAT!? What brain-fried teacher would put that on his report card?
So I have taken my new (first) house down to the studs and am rebuilding the interior....just getting the permits for all the work has been a sack of vipers. BUT this video is a great microcosm of the steps of renovation. I have been looking for a video like this to show my wife to be able to empower her. She has never done insulation or drywall, and when I see we can do a certain amount of the work, she is incredulous. I will say she is not wrong in her concern BUT she comes from a place of having never done OR seen it done. Thank you again BOB!
Michael Wilding a lot of these things can be done by people in general but on a big project like your house the main reason why you may want to pay people to do it is simply because of time. What takes ya'll 5 hours may take a skilled individual 1 or 2. But good lucc with your home
I totally agree. We have a few contractors doing various things. It's pretty crazy the sheer number of decisions to be made. Thanks for the perspective.
Michael Wilding I bet. I do remodels and flips in Texas and I only subcontract the cement/ concrete, plumbing, HVAC and landscaping. Everything else we take care of it and it's hard to find people who actually know what they are doing and are right on the price. It surely is a big hassle dealing with contractors and moving them bacc to bacc to get one in as soon as the other guy is out. Hope all goes smooth and yall can get into yalls home asap
Your kids are so nice in helping clean up. I never helped my dad when I was that little. Yeah looking back I probably should've done that
I love the longer videos

This is among my favorite videos of yours. Been watching for about a year and a half now. Really appreciate the simplistic insights into knocking down a partial wall and rebuilding accordingly. I have some very similar work that needs to be done at my house and this is extremely helpful. Always appreciate your videos, your straight forward way of presenting them, and the no BS approach. Will always check your videos when I have a project I need to do that I have not done before. Thanks a lot Bob! Also, Josh is doing awesome! He is a great addition to your process. I believe it Really improves the video quality having someone filming.
