I think I would add a collapsible desk surface on the wall of the bed’s bottom. That way it can be office space, but fold up when the bed is in use.

I like the idea of a work space too, but would use it for crafting and/or sewing. I'd use the remaining floor space for exercise equipment (yoga mat, resistance bands, etc.). I hate using my dining room table for crafting.

    Great fun project! TY!
    Space could be maximized
    utilizing all for storage.
    Perfect for guest pillows,
    blankets and linens.
    Another option:
    Table that folds out
    when bed is closed.

We did this in a spare bedroom utilizing an existing closet and purchasing a spring loaded queen Murphy bed kit. Well worth every penny! I would not like lowering and lifting this heavy wood frame. Ours was so easy and only one handed lower and lift.
Also a lot of wasted space here. Just my opinion.

I just have to share this. My sister lived in an old bungalow apartment when I was in high school. It was built in the 1920 or 30's, it had a Murphy bed that had a ring bolt on the floor you had to tether to or the bed would flip up. I assume to make it easier to lift and store. One day I cut class and went over to visit. I jumped into the bed to surprise her and the force dislodge the tether. We ended up folded in the bed against the wall. It was hysterical moment we had to fish our self around and use our legs to push the bed down and crawl out from the side. Every time I see one of these bed I laugh 😃.

just have to be careful to support the end of the bed as desk support tends to be in the centre of the frame length, and the end of the bed needs support usually - I make one which stays flat when opening the bed but we still need the leg supports as we don't let it touch the floor for this reason.

I installed a pair of spring loaded garage door hinges in reverse with the galvanized pipe hinge and the possibility of the bed EVER coming down with ANY possibility of an accident and hurting ANYONE is reduced to almost NEVER. Using this install tip, a single person can open and close the bed and there are no loose eye bolts that you need to track. Cheers!

Love this! I've been thinking of putting a murphy bed in my small bonus room, but other DIY's looked too complicated for my skill set. This actually looked doable and affordable! As others have said, more storage could be added and the drop-down desk was a cool idea too. This basic build is adaptable to adding other features depending on your skills, but for us beginners its simplicity is perfect.

I need to do just this in a downstairs office that hasn't been used in 10 years due to water damage that took that long to repair. 2 years ago more water damage affected the main floor, and then after a 25 month reno, there was more water damage downstairs again, so 6 holes cut in the walls to find the cleanout place in the drain. Casi D yeah not sure what she was thinking with this one. Most build a desk attached to the bed so when pulled down the desk becomes the legs that support the bed. Not a fan of Velcroing trim when the execution of this. Hold could’ve been stronger, better utilized for storage and entire form and function well planned 🤦🏻‍♀️

That's what I wondered, too. I don't see any reason why not. As for other style Murphy beds, yes - there are special kits available but they aren't exactly inexpensive and unless you're really handy and have the proper tools (I'm not and I don't), you have the additional cost of hiring a carpenter or a good handyperson who has experience to install a more complicated type of kit. The other thing is that this project was low cost. Notice she used finished plywood, not some expensive overlay of exotic wood; and she used simply plumbing pipe, cap and flanges plus large "screws" for the pivoting and locking mechanisms - affordable, cheap, easy to install.

Would love it if LOWE'S would furnish a Cut List, a Tool list, a Supply list (although it would appear that you've done the Tools in the Video description), + perhaps gauge difficulty + time? Along with a tad more fleshing-out of the steps.

I love this!! There’s nothing wrong with how this was done because this is how they chose to do it.
For myself, I too would tweak it a bit and utilize all the space on the sides. Instead of using the space above as some have mentioned, I’d move the bed up a bit higher, add a desk that can be used as the center support on the underside and add longer legs. (This would allow for a deeper depth desk).
So when the bed is up, it’s a nice little office or study area. Then it’s a truly hidden bed/guest space.
There are a lot of different ways to have done this but this diy video is very inspiring and helps us think of ways to add all our own ideas. 😁

I actually want/need to do this in my "office" we are a small 2 bedroom house so my "office" is actually the second bedroom. This is a great template. I would actually create an opening/cubby from the inside for the side tables so they can be accessed when the bed is in the down position. I would also probably put doors along the top for extra storage too. I really like how low profile this is and doesn't take up much depth space. Because it is in my office I would just put a reading chair and side table in front of the bed when it's hidden just to have more usable floor space too. I might have the open shelves facing inward towards the bed. Then make sure there are receptacles on both sides. If you finish the whole top section with a bottom shelf, you could have a lot of storage for sheets, pillows, blankets, comforters and/or bedspreads. Lights above the pillow area would be nice. The shelves could be used for books, tissues, bottled water, lamps, vase with flowers, etc. for your guests. Under the piano hinge tables could be additional storage or a small garbage area. Adding more function to the exterior of the bed would be helpful. A desk for the room could be used that doubles as an extra support for the bed along with extra legs would be good. Framed art could be mounted above the desk. Another piece of artwork would be good above the pillows for the lights to showcase. You could use mounted string lights inside the open bed area, too. Nice concept just needs some tweaking.

Love it! I agree with Huge Lunatic the spaces under the nightstands & above the bed would have been perfect for extra storage! I think it would be so cool to add a large hand painted mural or a large hand painted original picture on the bottom of the bed so that the pieces of wood that cover the seams look like a frame for the mural/picture, which in my mind gives them more of a purpose for being there instead of just hiding the seams of the bed. Hopefully that makes sense! lol!

Thanks for a practical way to do the bed without having to spend $300 on hardware. What someone does to maximize the use of space around the bed part is only limited by their imagination. Good ideas to brainstorm with on my own work in progress for an all-purpose space in my own home. 👍

I thought there was a lot of hidden storage potential that was over looked or not thought about during the design and build process. But that my opinion other than that a great idea.

I thought the same, I think the right side could have had some drawer storage that would be useful for guests and some shelving along the top as well could have been very nice

I agree that a lot of space was wasted- above the bed space, and the side shelves could be floor to ceiling.

Quite a bit of wasted space. If you don't need this to be "hidden" you could easily make doors on the top. I would put doors on either side, so guests have a place to put their clothing and shoes.

It's a great idea and turned out really well, not expensive. What I would have done a little different; I would have put cabinet doors under the built in shelves on both sides, a place to maybe store a suitcase or......and cabinet doors across the top of the entire build for additional storage for maybe seasonal things, not needed all that often. As far as the using the room when not in "guest mode", could be a number of uses, office, work out room, additional shelves for books - small library, crafts, so many choices. It looked pretty simple and looks good.

That is what i was thinking, i think incorporating a short (12") U the entire width of the bed at the top (right under the doors) that is flush so when you lower the bed it swings out and now the leg is the width of the bed, this would make the bed much more sturdy. Now you can permanently attach the cover pieces of wood to the bed that she attached with "velcro" to hide the cracks, i would also utiilize the bottom of the bed with a murphy desk or at the very least some sort of permanent art/picture. I'm pretty sure i just found my next project! Love

    • @sheilaslowe6340

Liza Velasquez, or one of the larger framed pieces of art that folds down to a table with sides of frame becoming legs for the table. Now you have a space for gift wrapping, crafts, etc. Just another thought. The Murphy desk would be the best though.

You just made my day. I watched many Murphy bed videos, but this one was more detail & thorough with the framing. It has everything I wanted to do with my room, even down to the queen size bed. The only difference with mine was I used 2 heavy duty 5 1/2" square swivels attached where you used pipe. I would have used the pipe, but I had already bought the swivels. This video was so cool to watch. Please make more for DIY videos us GALS who do it all😊😊😊😊😊
