Here is my version of a DIY Murphy Bed without the expensive hardware.

Great vid, great build. Excellent way to show that it doesn't take expensive tools or a custom workshop to make a complex piece. I didn't mind the music, unlike some others, but to each their own. Keep building and keep growing your skills!

@@recyclespinning9839 So I rewatched the video and made a tool list. Assuming she bought everything new, bought each tool individually, and didn't shop for sales? Then yes, $800 would be pretty accurate. Maybe even a little low. But I have almost all the same tools that she used in this build and I paid between $200 and $300 for them. I bought my miter saw used for $75, my circular saw used for $25. My drill and impact driver on sale for $100 as a combo pack. On sale my orbital sander was about $50. My router was thrown in for free when I bought my table saw (that I only paid $50 for, both used). You can get a good corded brad nailer for $20, new. From there, the clamps, the square, the pliers, and the tape measure are all fairly inexpensive. But if you're smart about it, you can build a tool collection on a budget. I've got a full shop's worth of tools for very little.
Also, you say she was probably taught wood working by her dad. As if that's a bad thing? However she learned, she's still got talent and definitely needs to keep building. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing more projects from her.
@@elijahmcstotts2871 I agree , it requires skills , just like a college degee requires time, so do those skills. Not to mention those tools are not for beginners nor a beginner project. Just saying ..
And yes she should give props to who , or where she learned them by...
@@recyclespinning9839 does every male Carpenter need to start giving props to where they learned their trade? Should everyone start stating who taught them what they know? Or just her since she's a woman doing it on her own? Common sense says she learned it from someone/ somewhere ( just like everyone does), where and who is irrelevant to this video.

As someone who does a lot of woodworking, I'm impressed you did this by "eye" without any plans. I like the idea of the swivels as the mechanism. So much easier and clever than the "professional" types. I was also impressed by the detail you went through when assembling. Well done!

🙋🏻♀️ same!! My boys keep fighting over the “big” room so I’m making my oldest a Murphy bed. Then he’ll have all the space he wants to play his Occulus and sleep in there. I once had a man build one for a different home years ago and he charged $2000. I was thinking yea right I won’t do that again!
I want to learn wood working so bad and have no idea where to begin. Making a murphey bed is one of the projects I want to learn.

You’ll make mistakes, but you’ll learn from them. With Anna, you start out with simple tools and simple projects but those projects are still very nice and helpful around the house!

“If you’re not rich, you have to be creative” and I’m seeing a lot of creativity here. I love that this is done with probably a cell phone, on a cheap tripod, on a shaky deck. It gets rid of all of the excuses people have when trying something new. Absolutely LOVE IT.

Twin Murphy bed for tiny house
The professional Murphy Bed hardware kits have a spring tension mechanism, which allows you to lift and store the bed with one finger effort. The 'swivel plate mechanism' shown here is a great alternative for a bed that is used on a rare occasion for guests as long as you are strong enough to lift the end of the bed up to the wall. Perfect for a home office room that needs to double as a guest room on occasion.
The spring tension is also a safety feature so the bed doesn't fall down hard and kill someone underneath!
Nice that someone explained why this mechanism was used. Because it’s important and the builder skipped right over that part.
@@simonspoke True, although a latching/locking mechanism would be an easy and inexpensive addition.
@@chrisgraham2904 It's not just the latching, it reduces the speed that it falls at. So it's like opening the lift gate on a truck where the hydraulics control the speed it opens at. If you had a guest open this and they lost control and a child was underneath it they would be in serious trouble. Not saying don't do it, just that's part of the reason murphy hardware costs so much -- and it's a great reason.

You could probably have the music at the same level as your voice, when it plays on its own.
The difference is like "going to a commercial" on cable.
Good on you for getting the bigger cuts done at home Depot. If they mess up the cuts you get new pieces.
Easier to transport cut pieces, and it makes a project more accessible.

I made two of them in my children's room they have enough space to go crazy and play. But you must add gas pistons to assist when you lift unless you are physically fit.

Great job. Budget is just as important as any other aspect of a project. You did a wonderful job and I’m encouraged that there are young women interested in carpentry. I have been doing woodworking for sixty years and never grow tired of the next project. Congrats!

I love it! I've been thinking about doing a Murphy Bed for a long time. I like the simplicity of yours. I also like that the "shelves" are the actual legs of the bed. If I make this, I will glue books on the shelves to make it look like they are real shelves. Thanks for the video, Diamond.
Nice build. I really like the herringbone pattern. That turned out great. I had to laugh at myself when you installed the T-nut. I have been doing that wrong for years. I have always driven them in with a hammer. Your way is much better. Thanks for teaching an old man something new.
That’s how I did it at first too and I thought the wood would break but I found a great tutorial online. Glad I could share the knowledge!

Nice work! For my personal taste I would have left the diagonal wood slats their natural color instead of painting them, but that's more of a decor item. Great job!

I kept my volume control on screen...ran it down every time the music started, but then I had to run it up to hear directions. I'm sure experience will make it better next time.

this is really great. I followed these directions with a few modifications people may find useful. 1. i made the frame panels from three horizontal panels instead of two vertical panels. Then cut notches in the middle panel to hold a solid core wood shelf (x2). I bought a 4'x24" hardwood butcher block for the shelves, but one could probably rip a 2x12 to do the trick.I added a second 3/4" x 4" piece of ply to the back of the cutout so the shelf/legs get 1-1/2" of reinforcement. We'll see if it holds. Then for the hinge, I wasn't in love with the hardware, so because there's more than 1-1/2" difference between the cabinet and the bedframe, I used a 1-1/4" wood dowel for the hinge. I reinforced the cabinet and bed frame with a second 3/4" piece of plywood, drilled a 1-1/4" hole and ran 4" pieces of dowel through.

Nice work. One suggestion, I would drill the pocket holes for the base on the outside face of the box , that way the screws are not biting in the very edge of the base plywood, which is weaker. The issue is that the holes are then visible but since you’re painting the frame, file holes and no problem there ;)
So the holes going into the frame, going around the frame (horizontal), or the holes going into the bottom base(vertical)
I was going to comment the same thing for future builders. The bed isn’t as strong bc of the way she did her pocket hole attachments but she did phenomenal. Also the holes could be plugged for less visibility.

Cool build! I had the same idea a while ago and wondered if it would work. Have you thought about adding gas pistons to assist with lifting and lowering the bed? I'm very curious if that is possible. That would potentially make opening and closing much more easier and safer.

Yeah. Her voice was so soft when she talked, so I had to turn it up a bit. But then the music would start and it was so loud, so I'd turn it down. And then she'd be talking softly again, so I had to turn it up. And then it would start all over again with the loud music. It's a great video as far as sharing the information about making the murphy bed, but it would have really been nice if the volume was more even.

Ive been researching murphy beds on line (for a guest bedroom/office) and hated them all . . . made of particle board. This is by far the best way to go. Thanks for sharing!

I wouldn’t recommend it. The queen that I built was really heavy and I’m not sure if the wood would be able to handle the weight of a king.

@@DarleneVibes you can up grade the plywood and the joinery to handle the greater weight of a king, (I used long pieces of 1/8th aluminum rt angle bracing) but unless you are able to easily lift and press 200 pounds, you will probably not get that big frame and mattress off the floor. At least not alone.

It has been a year since this video was released. My main question is: *Has this build lasted?* Can an update be given, even if it is a short one?

@@rawlr9066 It's likely that no update will ever be given. I have made my own, in similar fashion to her's, except for the hardware. It's a temporary situation that I will be using for a long while kind of thing. If you are interested in knowing, continue reading. If not, then just stop here.
I made a short twin sized bed with 3/4 inch birch plywood, the type used for cabinets and other furniture. It's thick and sturdy enough to hold my 155 pounds without issue. Since it is twin sized, I didn't need reinforcing ribs to preven bowing or cupping.
I framed the edge to hold the matress in place just like she did, with actual 1 inch thick cedar boards. I had to pre-drill every screw hole, and I placed screws every 6 inches to secure the 'walls' tightly. I did not use wood glue, but only because I had run out of it, and was too cheap to buy more for a temporary sleeping arrangement.
To tilt the bed away and back down, I used two sturdy 3 inch door hinges. To secure the bed from falling when put away, I used a gate latch. The latches that look similar to bolt action rifles (?).
I sized the bed frame to slightly squeeze the matress, and to be above the bed frame about 1 inch. So the 5 inch thick matress is surrounded by 4 inch walls.
Oh... this is all hinged on regular 2×4 lumber.
I have been sleeping on this every day since I made it, approaching a year, and it has held up fine. I did need to change the wood screws the gate hinges come with to bolts and nuts, as I put something near the pivot point one day and forgot about it. When I went to put the murphy bed in the sleeping position, well... I levered the wood screws out. A mistake I have not repeated.
My build is no where near as fancy as her's. But, it works well and hasn't failed on its own. It's actually pretty comfortable and having it put away through the day time gives me a lot of useful space in my very small (temporary I swear) home.
@@igounfazed Sounds like you hace that works for you. Glad it worked out for you. So instead of the boat swivel, you used hinges on 2 x 4's...so how did you put the 2 x 4 in place?
@@rawlr9066 In my case, I built a 2×4 frame for the bed to hing on to. My dimensions for the 2×4s are 2 pieces 42 inches long, and 2 pieces 11 inches long. That gave me a frame that is 42" × 14" (the 11 inch pieces go in between the two 42 inch pieces, and the actual size of a 2×4 is 1.5" × 3.5"). So, 11 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 14.
The 2×4 frame is held in place by the plywood box (closet) made to hide the murphy bed into, and that closet is attached to the wall just like hers.
I used the 2×4 frame to attach the door hinges, and attached the bed frame of similar build to what she made to the door hinges. On the bed part, I used "T-Nuts" with appropriately sized bolts to attach to the hinges. So it is securely fastened.
All that gives me around a top of mattress height of 19-20 inches when pulled down for sleeping. And I use a "Bedroom Bench" to rest the foot of the bed on instead of legs, as it gives me seating space when the bed is put away.
Again, I didn't make mine aesthetically pleasing. I made to be functional first and foremost. But it can easily be made with fashion in mind.
