Djent is: Short, quick bursts of sound that kind of simulate static rushing through you. Thall is: Long, stretched waves of sound that simulate a feeling of being pulled out of and suddenly being pushed back into reality. And that, kids, is the secret of Djent/Thall
From what I've put together with a couple friends, "thall" is the noise that Vildhjarta's guitars make when an open, unpalmuted note is hit. It's a noise to describe a tone, sort of like djent, but different. Or maybe it was fabricated so people could find Vildhjarta without having to remember the ludicrous spelling. :D
Everyone keeps commenting on the open strings of djent. But are you really listening? There are chords and melody over top of it. Do you bash on classical guitarist for using open strings as bass notes? Its all pedal point and it's been used since Mozart. Learn some music theory before making stupid comments.
Doesn't matter how many strings you have if all you want is to tune down, it's all in the scale lenght. a 27" 8 string tuned to E would need thicker strings than a 30" baritone 6 string.
@FPSPhil1337 the second one is also from "when no one walks with you", around 0:50. The third one is from "the lonely deranger", there are several variations in the song.
@JOETIBBS83 I agree on the stock pickups being a let down. I use an Ibanez S7320. I changed the pickups 8 days after I purchased it. I use a crunchlab and luquifire by Dimarzio.
Thalling is like two songs are trying to merge, but they can't, so they overlap in space of time; one has a djent structure, and the other has a melodic stretched chord structure.
@@coleslaw3422 Indeed, though I was a little disappointed in the final product of that first riff. Also you just reminded me to get the vinyl, thank you.
@gears2fan888 it's Vildhjarta, a 'djent' band, a style which originated with Meshuggah they recently signed with Century Media and they're going to release their first full length very soon :)
I love vildhjarta. i find something weird though, i own Måsstaden, and there are 13 tracks. yet when i go onto iTunes, there are only 10, and different ones than what i own. confused face?
Djent is heavily palm muted, high mid, low tuned ... sounds. However people are now using it more as a name for the bands that often make this "djent" noise or are associated with that "scene" if you will. Misha didnt make the word "djent" up either. It was actually meshuggah who first mentioned the word when explaining the tone, however Misha and Periphery are largely responsible for much of the growth of the term and the community associated with it. :)
@ConceptsProject Angel P-Ball, Screamer (stomp), noise gate and the rest is up to you with the EQ. That's my settings and I can get the same tone. I use the X3.
@Hifcrea I don't get it either. I've seen other bands talk about it and decorate their instruments with the word but no one will tell me what it means.
It's amazing. I'm not the biggest fan of the album, it's good but I liked their older stuff a little bit more. Despite all of that, that riff is still hands down the sickest riff I've ever heard.
@BlackScorpio1990 A really sick band. You should check them out. They have been idle for like two years it seems so that's why you haven't heard of them.
What are you going on about? I am right. He is also right, in that longer scale lengths require less thick strings, but he is wrong to believe that extended range=longer scale length. EMG and Schecter have 8 string guitars with 25.5" and 26.5" scale length, and Agile has 6 string guitars at 30"
Is there any way to get a tone like this with active pickups on the hd500x? I cant get it and I've been trying to research is for like 4 years. No one is talking about it. I've only had the hd500x for 2 months. I have a 8 string with blackouts and a 9 string with emg 909s.
Swedish word of the day... Vildhjarta, or vild hjarta, it means “wild heart” and sounds like “veal yarchta ”.. sounds like, “yacht” with a slight bit of r in there. 😁
I'm sorry, but that's wrong. The longer scale length of an extended range guitar allows the string tension to remain high even at lower tunings. Normally, on a six string guitar you would have a shorter scale length, and so you would need thicker strings to keep up the tension, but not on an extended range.
The bend at :11 is a different note than the one on the album, I swear..... it bugs me SO bad. I cant really listen to that song, because I heard it this way so much :/

I was watching one of Steve T videos and his said the origin of Djent is Thall so I searched this name and found myself here

classical players don't only use open strings as bass line
Monumentum Yes we do
not really, not always, not a rule
+Monumentum +Monumentum Djent players don't necessarily do as well
Monumentum Look up John Browne then let me if he is only using open strings.
THALL 1???? YOU MEAN THALL 0?!!!?!?
11 years ago and I’m just now learning about Vildhjarta in 2023. Yikes, but also THALL
I like how this guy in the intro is just like 'check out our demo for our neat song...'
> proceeds to drop one of the heaviest riffs ever written.

@6CORE6 On a seven string, Drop G refers to GDGCFAD. Whole step down with the seventh string dropped an additional whole step.
@6CORE6 Drop G tunning I think. In Djent that is always the first guess. Lots of bands, including Vildhjarta use it.
