  • Part 2 really compares the two philosophies and how different they are! I hope it helps you see the difference and the truth! Natural pet food is not the answer. Nutrition Science enables us to give your sick pet just the right nutrients they need to manage their disease. Nature does not offer that!

    Thank you, Glen, as always this is another great video full of great information that is so important for us, pet parents, to know about! So, this girl, Rachel, is no better than this other guy out in England, The Dog Nutritionist, that you reviewed a few weeks ago! Shame on them, I say!!! However, their sales pitch is so good and they sound so convincing that I cannot blame pet parents who take the bait and trust them, because I was one of them, until you showed up in my life!!! What a wake-up call you have been! So, one question for you: As I am in Canada, I know of two veterinarians who have flipped "to the other side" with the "Rachels" of this new "fad" world. They have quit their conventional veterinary practice to become "holistic, natural" vets with all sorts of home-made remedies and pet foods and what not. I'd like to have your opinion on this as to know why some vets switch over to an unconventional practice. I know you have a few vets like that in the US as well, so what is your take on that? 🥰

      Christine, vets are people too so they are just as unique as the rest of us. For some, the idea of alternative natural approaches my appeal to them. Some vets I’m sure just have that bent. But I wonder if some are considering it as a business decision. As Mars buys up more and more vet clinics, independent vets have to differentiate themselves…. Or at least might think they need to. The corporate clinics won’t touch holistic/natural therapies. Just personally, I find younger vets more vulnerable to new appealing ideas rather than clinical studies and evidence based science.

    Thank you for your help combating such nonsense, I came across Rachel in 2019, as I was getting a goldendoodle and bernedoodle puppies, and these were my first personal companions, and I was doing it on my own. COVID happened, and unfortunately, I was not able to meet with a vet for a moment as the world was trying to figure itself out, I was searching for good foods, best foods, and became fixated, anxious I was not doing enough or feeding "species appropriate" foods, and so anxious that I was not doing right by my pets. I was feeding them Acana Grain-Free, as that is what Rachel had suggested if you could not afford Orijen, and then that whole FDA report came out about DCM. I panicked even more as they were doodles and knowing that this impacted them. Thankfully, I was able to get an appointment not so close by, at UC Davis Small Animal Clinic. The vet that I had there was so patient, and kind explaining and going over nutrition and even offered to refer me to their nutrition department, speaking about grains, "species appropriate", and so on. From then on, I switched and rotated between Hills & Purina and have stuck to brands that at least have a nutritionist help formulate it or a reputable brand. As the vet there put it, as we see our companions as one of us, human trends trickle down to aspects of their lives such as food, supplements, and accessories. I will also say the community that she has created is very toxic, so anti-kibble that they devalue other pet parents' work and effort to keep their pets healthy.

      I have to agree. I replied to a comment on one of her videos just basically stating i've never had major health issues using kibble and not everyone can afford raw but more power to the ones who can and glad they are all thriving. WOW i was attacked just for saying i feed kibble like i'm literally killing my pets. People have no respect for other people's decision of how they feed their pet. If your pets are thriving regardless of what you are feeding them then there should be no argument.

    I agree I would go with hills when it comes to prescription they have been doing this for years and have so many resources and routine quality testing trials. Not sure about the diet she’s talking about but the price alone is just unattainable for most people.

    Thank you so much for doing these vids, it's so important to get this info out there!! I have a 8yr old Maltipoo on Hills L/D. He had liver shunt surgery but will probably have to be on the L/D for the rest of his life, but he is SO MUCH healthier now than before and thank god for foods like these are are specifically for these conditions. For other dogs that do not require a rx diet, what are your thoughts on using fresh food toppers, bone broth, etc just to add some variety?

      Maltipoo! Sounds adorable! The general rule is you can add up to 10% of the diet with people food. Of course watch calories! Happy to hear the LD is working. It’s a great product.

    Another great video!
    Does Rachel not realize that she still needs to add supplements to her "biologically appropriate" raw diet to make it nutritionally complete, or does she only demonize them when they're added in kibble? Also why does Rachel conveniently not mention the clinical trials performed by the big companies to prove the efficacy of their therapeutic diets and recommends a brand which all it has to say about its products is how "better" they are compared to other brands?

      @@TheCaptjamestkirk I feed dry but my two are 9 and 14 so I pour boiling water over the dry and serve it when it’s softer. I give them canned as a treat. Some older dogs lose their sense of smell so since canned has a stronger smell they prefer it. My two are pretty finicky, like most small dogs. My big dogs years ago ate anything happily!

    Hello Glen,
    I hope this comment finds you well. 😊
    My Vet has given me the option to purchase a therapeutic diet for my cat’s constipation issues. They sell the main three brands Hill’s, RC and Purina. He didn’t specify a specific brand as he gave me the opportunity to choose for myself as he said they all have a digestive/gastrointestinal lines to choose from. Can you tell me what are the main differences are between Hills Digestive Care i/D and Hills Gastrointestinal Biome Dry Formulas? I think they would both be great options for her. She’s 10 years old and I just want to get the best one for her. I worry about the nutrients as elderly cats don’t need as much protein as well as lower phosphorus. I currently have her on the Hills Perfect Digestion 7+ Chicken Barley and Whole Oats Recipe from the pet store right now and she seems to like it so far. I can keep her on that as well. It’s also an option.
    Thank you so much for your videos. And for your time.
    Have a lovely day,
    Ashley

      Ashley, your vet is right that there are a few GI diets from the big 3. Hills i /d is designed to be highly digestible, higher in nutrients lost to diarrhea or vomiting. It is actually high enough in nutrients for kittens so you are becoming a good nutritionist! The protein and phosphorus are quite high for your 10 year old cat. GI Biome has an adult/ senior nutrient profile. It is designed to provide specific fjber(prebiotics) to restore your cats natural microbiome. It has worked amazingly for both chronic diarrhea and constipation. The great thing is the Perfect Digestion has the same fiber sources so you are already on a great option! And it is perfect nutrients for a 10 year old. Let’s see how she does on that! Please let me know!
      You have a pleasant day too!

    We've seen many vets(especially now, trying to solve our little girl's allergies), and they've all mentioned the "more conditions seen these days". Seems that these "more conditions" could coincide with the appearance/explosion of all the "designer" pet foods to the market?? 🤔

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  4 місяці тому

      I believe that wholeheartedly! You can’t just ignore nutrition and choose ingredients based on how attractive they are. But some things aren’t explainable. We’re seeing more allergies in pets for sure, but the same is true with children. Makes you wonder.

    I fed my dog Science diet adult Chicken. I brush his teeth daily. Got beautiful teeth. I was thinking of mixing the dental diet in as well. Question. Why do I need to feed double the amount. I only feed 2 cups now for 45 lb. By the dental, I would need to almost 4 cups. My Gus is in great shape

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  6 місяців тому +3

      Food amounts are based on feeding real dogs in Hills colonies, but they get tons of exercise that most pets don’t get. Feed what maintains weight, the amt on the bag just a guide. I had a 100 lb dog that ate 4 cups a day while the bag said 5 to 7! He maintained perfectly. The dental diet is high in fiber to create the fiber matrix that cleans the teeth. Since fiber has no calories it would make sense it takes more space in a cup. Happy Gus is doing well!

      @@warrenhorowitz-vp6ul a good question that I can’t answer. I hate it when I don’t know! Lol! I will try calling tomorrow to find out. Usually a level of something is dependent on the other nutrients or ingredients in the food. I was just reminded in an article how every nutrient affects other nutrients, like minerals especially, a good argument for optimal supplementation. Let’s see what the experts say since my opinion doesn’t count!
