This is basically why I started using this food. Still a little convenient, but also a little better for the dogs. Worth the cost, but still cheaper than some other dehydrated foods out there. My old pug with a few missing teeth appreciates the consistency of this food lol

My family and I have a Goldendoodle as well. Except that he is an 8 month old puppy and is a Medium instead of a Standard. We just switched him to Honest Kitchen last night and he would not stop licking the bowl. I think this might be a keeper after having to constantly switch foods due to him being a picky eater and having digestive troubles from a lot of the foods that we tried and were recommended to us by our vet.

I fed my dog fresh pet for 2 years after finding out she had urinary problems. Since fresh pet is refrigerated vegetables and meat it held a lot of moisture which really helped with her problems. Nothing bad ever came from her eating it and her urinary problems went away! Recently her vet told me that it doesn’t provide enough nutrition so I went to a nutritionist and they said the opposite. It’s fine, the only problem is it made my dog gain weight so I ended up making the switch to honest kitchen and she likes it so far.

This was a very comprehensive review with both objective nutro-science as well as personal anecdote. I've been feeding their dehydrated dog food for the better part of the past year and it's been great. I really like that I can somewhat regulate the amount of water my dogs are getting. Always more water! It's also a great a base to use with other food items. As you said, the protein/carb ratio is underwhelming and to your point, adding eggs, a freeze dried raw component helps. I actually bought some boxes of the Booster you happened to review which seems like legit product. All this to say, I liked your vid. :)

@@TheTattooedDogTrainer No problem :) I would like to get your thoughts on what I consider the more controversial diet discussion and that is the fat/protein ratio. I think everyone will agree carbs should be a low component of a healthy dog diet but my research is kind of split on that fat/protein side of the coin. I guess at the end of the day the important thing to remember is calorie expenditure. Perhaps one day this might be a vid topic.

I just ordered the base mix so we can add our own cooked and raw proteins at home. I feel like it’s the perfect mix of the convenience of kibble and the health benefits of raw/home cooked. I was feeding the dehydrated complete meals but I also felt like there was a lot of potato and not enough meat. Overall, I still love them as a company. I’m really excited to start using the base mix! 😊

Thank you for your channel! I can only imagine some of the grief you must be getting from some of these dog food companies!
I’m new to your channel and I have yet to see any discussion or distinction between large breed and small breed food requirements or specific breed requirements. Might be good future topics if not already covered.
I am looking at getting a GSD in the next month or so and would like to raw feed but assessing proper proportions and feeding amounts seem vague to me. Any recommended reading in this area?

Would love a review of Stella & Chewy’s Raw Coated Kibble (chicken) for small breeds. Maybe a deep dive into their dehydrated raw-ish foods? In fact, would love some small breed comparisons focused on their specific needs in general.
Dealing with sudden onset of Coprophagia in a 6 month old. Started with IBD cat in the household who I really think is SIBO, not extracting from diet (Hills Biome...I know, I know) so stools are highly appealing and progressed to literally standing behind my other dog when she postures. Her pre-spay bloodwork showed elevated ALT but normal liver function and she is not clinical in any way. We’re doing a SAMe/milk thistle and antibiotic to be safe.
Still, this sent me down the rabbit hole of diets and ingredients. Maybe the puppy is deficient in some dietary way and I can do better for her.
I used THK many years ago. I love the philosophy, the transparency and I really want to offer human grade but the carb content is killing me. I feel like I’m downgrading the protein from current diet of Solid Gold Mighty Mini chicken/sweet potato.
So, what bears more weight, human grade or protein percentages and carb ratios?

I would love a review of Avoderm. The rescue where I adopted my dog fed Avoderm. My dog loved it but he was really gassy so I switched him to the Avoderm grain-free and he was doing really well on that. But his new vet recommended Purina, Hill's Science Diet, and Royal Canin...
So I switched him to Hill's and he went from 39 lb to 44 lb in a month. At first I was happy because it's been hard to keep weight on him (he was a stray and underweight when I got him), then I noticed what seemed to be fatty lumps on his chest. Probably nothing to be concerned of but it was alarming to see these physical changes as he gained weight so quickly. Also, I hate his breath now that he's on Hill's.
I watched your review of kibble and understand why you ranked Hill's so low. I would love to hear your thoughts on Avoderm as now I want to switch him off Hill's. I am considering Avoderm and Taste of the Wild (or others within similar price range).

I support the brand and what they stand for. The food smells wonderful when I add warm water. However, I have a big dog and feeding the recommended amount(dehydrated or clusters) made my dog need to go outside to poop about 4 times a day. I currently feed the grain free chicken clusters but I have to mix it with a majority of freshpet.
When I used the dehydrated mix, I had to use very hot water and let it sit for 10 minutes rather than the 3 minutes it said on the box. My dog did not digest it well until I started doing this. I also had to mix it with freshpet to not feed the recommended amount of THK but still meet caloric requirements.

I know this videos from a while ago but would it be a good idea to use a broth instead of water for the dehydrated food?

How much protein should I add? Replace maybe 1/4 of the dry mix with the same amount of protein?

I've been using Honest Kitchen Whole Grain Chicken for years. I have 3 Yorkies and 3 Chihuahuas. I have always added more meat by boiling different meats, mincing it and leaving it in the juice I boiled it in to use as the hydrator along with regular warm water so its like a soup. Anyway, all my little dogs improved. Weight is always maintained and no more runny, black, goopy eyes! It last's months, too. So initial cost seems spendy but broken down monthly, not so bad.

I just started using the honest kitchen limited ingredient fish recipe. I also not a fan of potato 🥔 In dog food. This LI formula does not have potato. Any thoughts on this formula vs the other HK dehydrated foods. Also their cup measurements are 8oz correct ? Love the videos, thanks so much for any feedback

Thank you for your awesome work and research! I came from your kibbles review video along with others and it's helped me a ton on staying educated. Quick question though, would you recommend their base mix or any premix in general across all brands? I'm having trouble making a balanced meal at home and would love to try these premixes out if they're good

If you are adding your own meat, the base mix is the most cost effect option

Hello. There’s a few I’d like to know your opinion on.
For dehydrated ones here are the brands:,
Earth Animal Wisdom, Grandma Lacy’s Moxie Grandma lacy’s artisan grandma Lacy’s pureformance grandma lacy’s macanna, Sojo’s. For freeze dried:…. Primal ( primal brand has a few other types as well), Sojo’s, Green Juju, Bixbi, Boss Dog, Northwest Naturals. Then Koha brand they have wet foods.
Right now I’m trying the honest kitchen and primal brands. My puppy has been a bit choosy. I also do homemade food for him. I too don’t like the idea the 2nd ingredient in the honest kitchen is white potatoe but I’ll add more meat to hopefully balance it better.
    Thank you.

Great video! But I was wondering can you make a video that reviews food in the fridge or freezer section of the pet/grocery stores. My pup is now on week two of using Freshpet Vital Grain Free Puppy Food along with Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diets With-Grain Puppy Food; Chicken & Brown Rice (she has been using the Natural Balance for 3months now). Look forward to new videos!

What are your opinions about Open Farm? Specifically for an Auggie (corgi/australian shepherd mix). It has higher carbs than most people seem to recommend, but i have also heard not to give corgis too much protein because they gain weight quickly. He is nearly a year, so really want to find something that we can stick with for a while.

Not a dog nutritionist, but in humans excess carbs are stored as fat. Excess protein can’t be stored and is excreted by the kidneys. I would think this applies to dogs as well.

Just bought this brand for our 11 year old Brussel Griffon! She has pancreatitis and has been on the Hill w/d prescription diet since January, but she still has flare ups and the ingredients don’t look so good. Wanted to try something more natural to see if this would help her better!

What do you think about FreshPet dog food ? Seems comparable to Honest Kitchen and the only refrigerated dog food that we can buy at grocery store. NOt sure if it is a marketing gimmick or if it is more superior than the ‘dry’ dog food.

My puppy absolutely hates it. But because it’s SO good for him and human grade, I literally break it up about 5 pieces at most because any more than that overpowers whatever meal I give him. So I ground up 3pcs for dinner tonight as example and added it to brown rice, unseasoned thinly sliced beef that I cooked separate from my dinner, and a little of this canned food that’s quite thick and 2 different types of kibble. I add ALL of this to get the balance right in protein and grains that the vet recommended he should have since I noticed his food doesn’t have as much meat protein as much as I’d like to see. I’m still trying to find my holy grail of the perfect food for my dog that meets his nutrient needs as well as something he’ll eat since he’s slightly picky. He’s a chihuahua so he’s going to be picky, but I was surprised that the grain free honest kitchen one does not appeal to him AT ALL. I didn’t want to give it away, so I’m sneaking it in very slowly so it doesn’t go to waste. I just wish my pup liked it. I tried SO many ways for him to eat it but what I find best is to add 3 pieces on average to his meal.
I tried it, it’s not THAT bad I’ve had worse real kibble. This def has moisture, but I get why he doesn’t like it. He doesn’t touch it even when soaked with delicious topper that I fricken cook special for him! Soooo after many different attempts, it is just a fat N-O on his list. He rather eat Pedigree of all things I was shocked at someone’s house where he helped himself and he was so happy eating it I judged him right then and there.
My previous chihuahua was SO picky. She only liked the highest grade food and this chi pup I have likes the bottom of the barrel stuff 😓
Oh holy grail puppy food, please land in my lap so I don’t have to spend more time making his meals than I do mine🙏🏻 amen

If you aren't ready for raw yet, that is okay! Canned food or cooked meat make great "add to"s! You can also check out freeze-dried raw options, much less messy and intimidating than it's frozen twin.

DO I NEED TO FEED MY DOG MORE?
I have a 5 month old mini/medium aussiedoodle. She weighs 19 pounds and is 15 inches tall (floor to shoulder/whithers). Right now, over the course of a day, I feed her 1/2 cup Carna4, 4 mini raw patties from Bones & Co., goat’s milk, and some fresh greens and toppers. Also, am I feeding her enough? Should I feed her more kibble or raw food?

Can you review grandma Lucy’s freeze dried dog food? Specifically the pureformance and the macanna lines, I’m not to fond of the potatoes and sweet potatoes in the artisan line personally , the store we shop at says they are run by a nutritionist so everything in the store is recommended but they sell earthborn which ive seen is absolutely not recommended by other nutritionists. We’ve been feeding farmina and personally i love it for my pups but i have two that are very picky and lately are barely eating and theyve been checked by the vet and they are healthy just being picky
