I fed my dog fresh pet for 2 years after finding out she had urinary problems. Since fresh pet is refrigerated vegetables and meat it held a lot of moisture which really helped with her problems. Nothing bad ever came from her eating it and her urinary problems went away! Recently her vet told me that it doesn’t provide enough nutrition so I went to a nutritionist and they said the opposite. It’s fine, the only problem is it made my dog gain weight so I ended up making the switch to honest kitchen and she likes it so far.

@@desiraegarrett2175 Hello 👋 I haven't bought a 40 lb bag of kibble in so many years but I guess it depends on the size of your dog and how much they eat. I have 2 large goldendoodles, 15 yrs and 4 yrs, and they go through a box every 11 days. Hope that helps 🙂
My family and I have a Goldendoodle as well. Except that he is an 8 month old puppy and is a Medium instead of a Standard. Would love a review of Stella & Chewy’s Raw Coated Kibble (chicken) for small breeds. Maybe a deep dive into their dehydrated raw-ish foods? In fact, would love some small breed comparisons focused on their specific needs in general. Dealing with sudden onset of Coprophagia in a 6 month old. Started with IBD cat in the household who I really think is SIBO, not extracting from diet (Hills Biome...I know, I know) so stools are highly appealing and progressed to literally standing behind my other dog when she postures. Her pre-spay bloodwork showed elevated ALT but normal liver function and she is not clinical in any way. We’re doing a SAMe/milk thistle and antibiotic to be safe. Still, this sent me down the rabbit hole of diets and ingredients. Maybe the puppy is deficient in some dietary way and I can do better for her. I used THK many years ago. I love the philosophy, the transparency and I really want to offer human grade but the carb content is killing me. I feel like I’m downgrading the protein from current diet of Solid Gold Mighty Mini chicken/sweet potato. So, what bears more weight, human grade or protein percentages and carb ratios?

I support the brand and what they stand for. The food smells wonderful when I add warm water. However, I have a big dog and feeding the recommended amount(dehydrated or clusters) made my dog need to go outside to poop about 4 times a day. I currently feed the grain free chicken clusters but I have to mix it with a majority of freshpet. When I used the dehydrated mix, I had to use very hot water and let it sit for 10 minutes rather than the 3 minutes it said on the box. My dog did not digest it well until I started doing this. I also had to mix it with freshpet to not feed the recommended amount of THK but still meet caloric requirements.

I've been using Honest Kitchen Whole Grain Chicken for years. I have 3 Yorkies and 3 Chihuahuas. I have always added more meat by boiling different meats, mincing it and leaving it in the juice I boiled it in to use as the hydrator along with regular warm water so its like a soup. Anyway, all my little dogs improved. Weight is always maintained and no more runny, black, goopy eyes! It last's months, too. So initial cost seems spendy but broken down monthly, not so bad.
Great video! I just switched my dog to dehydrated food. It’s called Grandma Lucy’s Pureformance. How does it compare to The Honest Kitchen Dehydrated line?
From what ive seen raw is going to be better for them. The powered isnt quite as good for them. Since the dehydration process loses some of the nutrients. Is what Ive understood.
How would you compare Honest Kitchen Clusters (whole grain) with Farmina grain inclusive? Trying to decide for my golden retriever puppy and want best quality!
I started on nutri-source because that's what the breeder fed him on (she was a vet tech) I moved to honest kitchen because my little guy was having a tight tummy like he was bloated. I moved to this in hopes to lessen that. I am really happy with how my puppy has been doing on the puppy clusters, now I know to add some more meat. Do you have a particular meat you would suggest? Home-cooked mix of offal and meat, dehydrated raw, pate of this brand? I dont really want to switch off of it as my puppy is very picky and tolerates this well. I often am adding things like yogurt or pumpkin to fill up my pup because he's a beagle and LOVES to eat but I know he's going to be prone to obesity so I like to fill him up with other stuff outside of his suggested serving. Ive done a mix of dry and wet when I did nutrisource so I could do the same with this with like a 75% clusters 25% pate? (He really likes his clusters)
What are your thoughts on the base mixes for THK? I’m currently feeding my bulldogs the DEHYDRATED GRAIN FREE VEGGIE, NUT & SEED BASE MIX and adding chicken. Love to know your thoughts on the base mixes. Thanks!!
would really love to hear her thought on this as well, i'm thinking of trying something like this for my dogs but as far as i can see the packaging doesn't specify how much meat to add. how has your dogs experience been with it?
Thank you for this video! I love that you break everything down! We've been feeding frozen raw Primal Pronto and it's getting too expensive. This seems like a great option to get the nutrition while saving a bit of money. When you say "add additional meat" to the dehydrated food, what would that look like? Organ meat? Ground meat (cooked? raw? partially cooked)? And, how much would you recommend to add?
Hello. There’s a few I’d like to know your opinion on. For dehydrated ones here are the brands:, Earth Animal Wisdom, Grandma Lacy’s Moxie Grandma lacy’s artisan grandma Lacy’s pureformance grandma lacy’s macanna, Sojo’s. For freeze dried:…. Primal ( primal brand has a few other types as well), Sojo’s, Green Juju, Bixbi, Boss Dog, Northwest Naturals. Then Koha brand they have wet foods. Right now I’m trying the honest kitchen and primal brands. My puppy has been a bit choosy. I also do homemade food for him. I too don’t like the idea the 2nd ingredient in the honest kitchen is white potatoe but I’ll add more meat to hopefully balance it better. Thank you.
Just bought this brand for our 11 year old Brussel Griffon! She has pancreatitis and has been on the Hill w/d prescription diet since January, but she still has flare ups and the ingredients don’t look so good. Wanted to try something more natural to see if this would help her better!
I saw there's also a chicken and oats recipe for the clusters that doesn't have potatoes. The first 6 ingredients are chicken, oats, barley, chicken liver, carrots, eggs. I wonder if that's a better option for dogs that don't need grain free?
I thank you for your review on the HK. I have three labs and My youngest Maggi, 6 and Holli is 12 eat the grain beef dehydrated and Maggi will have the beef clusters in the morning. Tucker, our middle pup eats science Diet Derm complete. sever environmental allergies. what do you recommend as a topper if has high kidney (SDMA) blood results?
This was a very comprehensive review with both objective nutro-science as well as personal anecdote. I've been feeding their dehydrated dog food for the better part of the past year and it's been great. I really like that I can somewhat regulate the amount of water my dogs are getting. Always more water! It's also a great a base to use with other food items. As you said, the protein/carb ratio is underwhelming and to your point, adding eggs, a freeze dried raw component helps. I actually bought some boxes of the Booster you happened to review which seems like legit product. All this to say, I liked your vid. :)
@@TheTattooedDogTrainer No problem :) I would like to get your thoughts on what I consider the more controversial diet discussion and that is the fat/protein ratio. I think everyone will agree carbs should be a low component of a healthy dog diet but my research is kind of split on that fat/protein side of the coin. I guess at the end of the day the important thing to remember is calorie expenditure. Perhaps one day this might be a vid topic.
I second the comment about doing a video on fresh pet! Trying to add more fresh food to my dogs and cats diets. I know it's not the best but would be great to do a deep dive and use as a jumping step into higher quality ones! For me it's that it's so easily available at my local pet store and other fresh type foods I've seen are subscription based which I don't want.
Can you review Unkibble from spot and tango? I’m interested in dehydrated and airdried foods like you said for it’s convenience especially for training and on walks outdoor sessions etc
My vet convinced me to feed my puppy Purina Pro Plan but it hasn’t sat right. She hasn’t even gone thru an entire bag yet thankfully, but now I’m lost in a sea of dog food… I’m considering Orijen. There dry food looks amazing and they have a raw line. I’m super curious about what you think about Meet Maev. It’s a tiny flash frozen brand that’s super expensive but might be worth it? Can’t even find customer reviews on it yet.
I just found out Orijen (& Acana) are now owned by Mars (candy co 😞) My pups have been on Orijen red & fish for 13 months (they are only 1.5 y/o) along with my cooking of meats & veggies. But I’m thinking of switching to Honest now. I don’t like the fact a large company (Mars) is making the dog food
It's been awhile since I commented on this video. I think the best option these days is making the food yourself or going with Maev, or similar if you can find it. @@MandaChheour50
Do not be tricked by the marketing masters of Mars candy Co. The Orijen freeze dried covered kibble is less than 1% of the product ingredients but they proclaim it right in the bags branding like it is a substantial part. Plus the food is not fit for human consumption it is animal feed grade quality ingredients and is extruded to make kibble. You want a human grade kibble that is either soft baked (slow and low temp baked), freeze dried or air cooked (air dehydrated).
I have a Jack Russell and a Corgi who love HK. We did start with Spot Farms dehydrated food but they had a food shortage at the start of the pandemic so we switched to HK. Would love to see a review of Spot Farms.
Spot and tango unkibble review please. It’s similar to honest kitchen I think because it’s dehydrated/freeze dried. But I’m curious if it’s all that and a bag of chips lol
For freeze dried, dehydrated and air dried need to all be rehydrated with liqued? Why do these all need to be rehydrated but kibble doesn't have to be?
I love the honest kitchen! I will absolutely not use a brand that’s not human grade. The one issue I’m having with my newer dog is she had an allergy of some sort. I am just getting into figuring out how to try an elimination diet. My struggle is finding a more affordable human grade limited ingredient food. The honest kitchen has a few but very pricier for how much food you’re getting. Sorry long comment. Any recommendations?
The most common food allergens are wheat, chicken, beef, and lamb. My best recommendation would be to get the Honest Kitchen Base Mix and add in the protein yourself. Start with a novel protein like duck (pretty low chance of being an allergen), and once allergy symptoms have subsided you can replace the duck with turkey or beef or lamb and see if any symptoms pop up. If they do, you know that protein is the allergen and you can go back to one of the "safe" proteins. You can also add Goat Milk to their diet as it is a natural antihistamine and can help manage symptoms in the mean time.
I feed the limited ingredient chicken honest kitchen. I prefer that it uses quinoa instead of potato, which I consider more nutritious. I usually scout out good deals online and get it 15-25% off, which is pretty affordable. I supplement with raw meaty bones, organs, eggs, veggies, mackerel/ sardines ( a mix of what is affordable/ nutritious). I have also used the turkey limited ingredient formulation, which may work for you if your dog has a sensitivity to chicken, but not other poultry.
@@janepappas1032 I wish their limited ingredient recipes came in the clusters. The clusters are much more cost effective for how long a bag lasts for me.

Bro i just had to be patient to hear you mention whats up
What are your thoughts on the base mixes for THK? I’m currently feeding my bulldogs the DEHYDRATED GRAIN FREE VEGGIE, NUT & SEED BASE MIX and adding chicken. Love to know your thoughts on the base mixes. Thanks!!
would really love to hear her thought on this as well, i'm thinking of trying something like this for my dogs but as far as i can see the packaging doesn't specify how much meat to add. how has your dogs experience been with it?
Can you do a review on Natures Valley- INSTINCT RAW BOOST dog food
Do you have a review video on Dr. Harvey's dog food?
Glad I found your channel
Can you please do a brand review on open farms?
Thank you for this video! I love that you break everything down! We've been feeding frozen raw Primal Pronto and it's getting too expensive. This seems like a great option to get the nutrition while saving a bit of money. When you say "add additional meat" to the dehydrated food, what would that look like? Organ meat? Ground meat (cooked? raw? partially cooked)? And, how much would you recommend to add?
Can you rank toppers?? 😊
Any ideas about Royal Canine kibble
how do you feel about the just add water cat food formulas?
Hello. There’s a few I’d like to know your opinion on.
For dehydrated ones here are the brands:,
Earth Animal Wisdom, Grandma Lacy’s Moxie Grandma lacy’s artisan grandma Lacy’s pureformance grandma lacy’s macanna, Sojo’s.
Thank you.
Could I add a freeze dried topper and if so what kind.
Just bought this brand for our 11 year old Brussel Griffon! She has pancreatitis and has been on the Hill w/d prescription diet since January, but she still has flare ups and the ingredients don’t look so good. Wanted to try something more natural to see if this would help her better!
So feed her natures logic distinction brand
I would like to have some information on NutriSource dog food please?
What do u think of V dog and wellness core plant base?
I saw there's also a chicken and oats recipe for the clusters that doesn't have potatoes. The first 6 ingredients are chicken, oats, barley, chicken liver, carrots, eggs. I wonder if that's a better option for dogs that don't need grain free?
Do a análisis on Orijen
Are the honest kitchen clusters better than kibble like the company says?
Thank you so much!
For me it's that it's so easily available at my local pet store and other fresh type foods I've seen are subscription based which I don't want.
fresh pet uses animal feed grade not human grade. that should be a full stop in itself.
Love THK's wet food/topper 🤩 so easy and convenient as a topper.
Thank you!!!
Can you review Unkibble from spot and tango? I’m interested in dehydrated and airdried foods like you said for it’s convenience especially for training and on walks outdoor sessions etc
How about smalls for cats
My vet convinced me to feed my puppy Purina Pro Plan but it hasn’t sat right. She hasn’t even gone thru an entire bag yet thankfully, but now I’m lost in a sea of dog food… I’m considering Orijen. There dry food looks amazing and they have a raw line. I’m super curious about what you think about Meet Maev. It’s a tiny flash frozen brand that’s super expensive but might be worth it? Can’t even find customer reviews on it yet.
I just found out Orijen (& Acana) are now owned by Mars (candy co 😞)
My pups have been on Orijen red & fish for 13 months (they are only 1.5 y/o) along with my cooking of meats & veggies.
Is Honest Kitchen still better than your "chefs kiss" dog kibble? I can't decide Honest Kitchen or Carna4
I have a Jack Russell and a Corgi who love HK. We did start with Spot Farms dehydrated food but they had a food shortage at the start of the pandemic so we switched to HK. Would love to see a review of Spot Farms.
What’s better whole grain or grain free?
Can you do more of these for cats?
What are your thoughtS about the GRAIN free my vet disagrees with the grain fee label? TIA
Outside of the honest kitchens limited ingredient recipes all of their recipes seem to have potato, eggs and or a common allergy protein.
@@TheTattooedDogTrainer hello, how do I transition from whole grain chicken to grain free base mix adding duck for a French bulldog that has swollen red paws and red around the face (allergies).
i love your videos !
Thank you so much!
Given that the cat food options had a better protein to carbohydrate ratio, would you recommend feeding a small dog the cat food option?
Could you do a review of Life’s Abundance dog food
Please review the Toppers Bone Broth Chicken Stew
I would love to see a review of Dr Harvey’s raw Vibrance and their new complete meals.
Can you review just food for dogs vs honest kitchen?
I just started using the honest kitchen limited ingredient fish recipe. I also not a fan of potato 🥔 In dog food. This LI formula does not have potato. Any thoughts on this formula vs the other HK dehydrated foods. Also their cup measurements are 8oz correct ? Love the videos, thanks so much for any feedback
How much protein should I add? Replace maybe 1/4 of the dry mix with the same amount of protein?
I started using HK dehydrated to get some weight back on my 14yo Italian greyhound who is not a food driven dog and he has eaten all he was given (mostly).
But have hesitated feeding this to my young dog with perfect clean teeth as more than a treat. Besides maybe needing to brush teeth more, any other downside for teeth used to dry food?
It is actually a myth that kibble helps to clean teeth! The opposite is actually true
Can you tell me the difference between high protein vs grain free cat food?
