Another fact I just found out today is that FireRed and LeafGreen are the only games in the series where the Tiny Mushrooms and Big Mushrooms actually have a practical use rather than just something to sell as this game's item for the Move Reminder on Two Island

It makes sense that Legends Arceus doesn't have the Master ball, since the Master Ball was invented by Silph Co. in the Gen1 games. I would say technically the Origin ball serves as the master ball purpose, it's just you are forced to use on a certain Pokemon.
It's not that it's hard to change shedinjas ability, it's the fact that if you randomize wonder guard on Shedinja, it enters the general pool of abilitys to go on other pokemon, and in generations pre-gen 6 there would be pokemon immune to damage. Just a balance reason as to why it's never randomized
Not to mention that Shedinja would be useless with most abilities. Sand Stream? Snow Warning? Blaze? Torrent? Overgrowth? Even if they managed to give Shedinja a random ability without letting other Pokemon get Wonderguard, it would make Shedinja the most useless Pokemon and they may as well just remove it entirely.
I know of a Poketuber who posted a video where he gave a growlithe shedninja's ability in Sw/Sh, in a double battle. Than he had the Growlithe use Burn Up, becoming Type Less, with wonder guard. There is of course, a lot of build up to that point. But, yeah, it is hard to give wonder guard to others. The "simplest" method, is to have a shedninja us mimic to mimic Entrainment. For those wondering, Burn Up was an egg move for growlithe back in gen 7, and BD/SP.
@@improbablegaming6592 True, but, I have a randomizer that works on Shedninja. Don't remember where I got it from though. It was hilarious as when I first fought a shedninja it had sturdy. More like make that "had". As I tend to not keep roms/hacks like that for long considering their dubious legality. And I completely agree, if a randomizer is not for a Gen that has fairy types, those two should not get wonder guard.
Oh, I thought the Reshiram/Zekrom thing was well known at this point! That's actually the reason why you unlock a box in SwSh after catching Eternatus, too - Since it's a mandatory catch, guaranteeing you have space in the box when you catch it makes sure you can't softlock yourself by filling up all your slots.
They learned from previous games - in Gen 1 (and 2?) if you tried to do the catching tutorial with no room to send a caught Pokemon, they'd get stuck in a loop.
Smeargle's tail was originally Red-colored, at least in the Gen2 games that were the case. Coliseum and Gale of Darkness just followed the Gen2 games so that's not their fault. The reason I know this was because I was playing VC crystal this month and I went to catch Smeargle, found a red-tailed one thought OMG I found a shiny! But turned out it wasn't.
To add on to this, Pokémon from gens 1 and 2 in Colosseum and XD use their models from the Stadium games - Presumably it was done to save on time and resources, but it causes some design inconsistencies like Smeargle's tail color due to designs being altered with the leap in hardware capabilities between the GB/GBC and GBA! You see a lot of weirdness with shinies in Colosseum, too, some of which don't even match up with their Stadium color palettes OR their palettes in the main series - Quilava and its green flames come to mind. Not quite sure what happened there, but I kinda love it.
Personally, as someone who grew up playing a lot of Gen 2, I've always viewed Smeargle's colors in Gen 3 onwards (excluding Coliseum and XD: Gale of Darkness) as a mistake and them just getting mixed up.
It's pretty common for Pokemon characters to be named after plants in Japanese, even Bill's name in Japanese can be explained as a kind of tree in some way. It's more likely the localization of Bebe's name started the trend of computer-related things because she obviously got her Japanese name before the other languages.
I don't know how to accurately explain this, but the Floaroma Meadow flower arrangement in BDSP is just slightly off from the original layout in Diamond and Pearl. You'll only notice if you count the exact flowers in both games, paying attention to the colors and how many there are. It seems like a mistake rather than a distinct choice. I wouldn't even bother mentioning this if it weren't for the fact it's basically the definition of an obscure pokemon fact that no one would ever ask for lol
On a similar note to 'Magical Pokémon Journey.' They ran a contest while it was still running where people could submit designs that could be turned into actual Pokémon. While it was only exclusive to that series specifically.

As for the Nuzleaf/Grass Whistle fact, assuming you're correct, it's even more weird due to Nuzleaf literally using the move Grass Whistle in an episode of the anime 😂
Nuzleaf not being able to learn GrassWhistle despite its Pokédex entry saying it can use its leaf like a flute isn’t the only example of a Pokémon’s move pool not reflecting its Dex entry. Here are a few other examples -Watchog’s Pokédex entry states that it likes to spit seeds even though it can’t learn Bullet Seed -Vullaby’s entry states that it can’t fly because it’s a baby bird but it in fact can learn Fly
The speed stat is not tied to the physical speed of the Pokemon, but, rather, the Pokemon's reflexes. And when you think of it that way, it makes perfect sense why certain high-speed Pokemon, like the one covered and Rhyhorn have low speed stats. And this also explains why Pokemon that would obviously not be fast on their feet have high speed stats, such as Slaking or Eiscue when it's ice block is broken. Do not try to convince me that this little penguin can out run a talonflame or weavile. This is something I feel lots of people have overlooked, and to be fair, I did not really start to realize this till a few years ago, when I started to realize something about the stats in Dungeons and Dragons. So, speed is not about physical speed, though, that might still play a part, but, is more about reflexes.
The Smeagale thing is because the model was recycled from an older game when the Pokémon had red paint on it's tail in it's non-shiny form before getting that changed for gen 3.
The reason the randomizer doesn't change shedinja's ability is because it's HP is hardcoded to always be 1. It's just more fair (for shedinja) that way.
If you accidentally knock out Suicune in HGSS, you can find it after beating the Elite 4 in the basement of the Burned Tower, near where you find the beasts, just at the back.
The Gamecube games used assets from the Stadium games, which used a red-tailed Smeargle because Smeargle had that as its original color in Gold and Silver. It’s basically a relic of the past.

The Smeargle one is actually because the shiny and regular forms were swapped between gen 2 and then gen 3 and the GameCube games reused the 3D models from Stadium 2
Interesting that Poison doesn’t have a flinch move. When you said that, I could’ve sworn that Poison Fang did like the other fang attacks, but no, it just can toxic instead. Very weird.
I wonder if the red tail on Smeargle looked too much like blood and they ended up changing it to green? Or was the green tail already a thing and just those games changed it? A regional variation would be kinda nice, with different tail colors.
great vid! i’ve been a fan of pokémon for ages and know tons of obscure facts but a lot of these were new to me, i’m glad to see stuff i didn’t know yet
I just took a look through the source code for the randomizer and like a couple other people said, it’s not harder to change Shedinja’s ability than it is for any other pokemon. The randomizer just doesn’t let it change for balance reasons
The randomizer doesn't change Shedinja's ability because it would be super unbalanced if basically any other Pokemon got it. There's a toggle to ignore that exclusion though, last I checked.
That last one makes sense, considering it says it makes them uneasy, not that it lulls them or puts them to sleep. Disarming Voice, Eerie Impulse, and Screech would all seem to be better candidates for this entry than Grasswhistle, though I wouldn't necessarily fight for any of them. Maybe one day we'll get a move like this for Nuzleaf?
Odd fact (with some speculation), the two companies that translated and localised the Pokemon Adventure Manga were Viz Media, and Xuang Yi, with the latter being from singapore. Xuang Yi has since closed its doors, however it was always said about how they would take America's Viz Media translations, flip the manga to be read left-to-right instead of the Japanese right-to-left orientation, and then publish it. However despite this, there once was a time that Viz attempted to skip ahead to catch up to Japan with the manga, skipping from the end of Ruby and Sapphire and going straight to Black and White, and it was only after many fans cried out that they released the missing volumes, however in this time Xuang Yi were still releasing their editions as well, with them even getting further than Viz with the translations. Despite this, it was still seen that Xuang Yi stole from Viz Media. My speculation though is that it was the other way around, that Xuang Yi often did their translations in-house, while Viz chose to copy, and then flip, the others work. One hard piece of evidence of this comes at the start of every volume, in which the reader was presented with a map of the pokemon world and you could see where the trainers were in their journey, their party, and even their badges (or contest ribbons). When looking at the Japanese releases, the map is normal, and with Xuang Yi's release the map remained normal despite the manga having been flipped. The only outlier was Viz, in which the region map was now flipped to show the opposite, with the Pokemon League in the Kanto region now being on the right-hand side of the map, instead of the left like we all know it to be.
Don't forget that Smeargle also has a red tail in Gen 2 games as it's regular sprite, but features a green tail in strategy guides. Smeargle also has a red tail in Pokemon Channel despite not being shiny.
5:11 The banning of the Porygon Episode, and subsequently Porygon as a whole from appearing ever again in the Anime was massively unfair. Yes, that "Electric Soldier Porygon" caused seizures due to rapidly flashing lights was bad of course, but it wasn't the Virtual Duck that caused it. Rather the Actions of a certain yellow Rodent... 8:24 Shinies in the two big Gamecube Pokémon Games are wild across the board by the way. My favorite example is shiny Diglett. Instead of a blue nose, it looks more like Pokémon's take on a Super Mario World Hill. 10:02 I still wonder whenever the whip thing comes up whether the fact that (overleveled) traded Pokémon might ignore your orders is a repurposed remnant of this early stage in which you had to manually tame Pokémon.
It's not really a mistake, the gamecube games reuse the stadium models and in gen 2 Smeargle had a red tail, which was made the shiny color in gen 3 onwards, but they never uptaded the 3d model, just reused it.
I barley hear anyone talk about magical pokemon journey. I remember finding one issue at my public library (or maybe elementary school library? I'm not certain) when I had to have been in around 3rd or 4th grade. I always thought it was an offbrand until i saw it referenced in niche fact videos like this years later. Weird little series that I wish more people covered for just how distant it feels from all other official pokemon media.
I'm surprised people even know about it at all. Picked up the whole series at my local bookstore as a kid and ended up losing half the volumes when I moved houses.
Did you know, you can catch Heracross in 28/32 main series games since its debut without trading Gen 2: 3/3 Gold Silver Crystal Gen 3: 6/7 - not XD Ruby Sapphire Emerald Fire Red Leaf Green Colosseum Gen 4: 5/5 Diamond Pearl Platinum Heart Gold Soul Silver Gen 5: 4/4 Black White Black 2 White 2 Bonus: Dream World Gen 6: 4/4 X (albeit through the Friend Safari only) Y Alpha Sapphire Omega Ruby Gen 7: 2/4 - Ouch not Sun and Moon Ultra Sun Ultra Moon Gen 8: 4/5 - not Sword Shield (albeit through the Isle of Armor DLC) Brilliant Diamond Shining Pearl Legends Arceus
Also to add onto the Smeargle thing: Pretty sure the Colosseum games [and I think even Battle Revolution] just reused the Stadium models for the Gen1 and 2 Pokemon, and back in Gen2, Smeargle's regular and Shiny appearances were swapped [red was regular, green was Shiny]
I think the mystery dungeon box art is supposed to represent the cartridge slots in the DS. Blue is on top as the cartridge a lot is on top and red on the bottom as the gba card slot is on the bottom.
In B2W2, Yancy only trades you Meowth, she doesn't trade you Mankey even if you pick the Female character. This is because she is in the "Dating plot" that revolves around picking up her dropped item and giving it back to her, so this character who goes on a date with you will always be the opposite gender. Therefore Yancy does not show up if you pick the female character, instead, a male character called Curtis will take her place, and only Curtis will trade you a Mankey. This is very different than saying Yancy will trade you a Mankey, I just wanted to point out the difference here.
Omg I saw the Ditto from Magical Pokemon journey & just had to leave a comment. I loved that manga, but finding it nowadays is expensive! It went out of print in the usa around volume 7 of 10 and was never finished here.
Having no gen 1 Pokemon is one of Emerald's biggest draws imo. I think that's why I played it so SO much as a kid and now continue to (on the same hardware and cartridge from my childhood) as a grown-ass man
These obscure facts are my favorite with "Beating so "Pokémon so and so" how Nintendo intended" series. Also don't the covers for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky and Explorers of Darkness connect into one whole image like Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team does?
You didn't even mention for the Red rescue team and Blue rescue team boxarts that they coincide with their slots on a DS - gameboy games enter the bottom, which coincides with Red rescue team's boxart showing them looking up from the bottom vs. Blue rescue team's cartridge being inserted at the top
Yup White Forest is why I got White version. I saw that Black City had no wild Pokémon and didn’t want to miss out. In the end though, I transferred everyone in from the older games so it wasn’t the biggest deal.
Smeargle's shiny color was actually his now-natural green tail in GSC, while his normal tail color was sorta brownish. I'm not sure when the GC games started development in relation to Ruby and Sapphire, but this could have something to do with the inconsistency.
8:10 the whole smeargle tail thing isn't actually a mistake on the part of XD/Colloseum, as Smeargle was intended to have a red tail as its base form before it released for Gen 3. Apparently there's official GameFreak development art that show Smeargle with a red tail
Also a useless fact heatran is the only legendery effected by the cutecham glitch in gen 4 even if you have a female gender pool with the glitch you would think cresellia would be affected by the glitch but it doesnt.
"Game Freak says Legends is a main-line game" Time for the good ol' Avengers quote [that, admittedly, will be butchered as I'm doing it from memory]: "I heard the council's decision, but given that it is a stupid decision, I've elected to ignore it"
Didn't ask indeed 🤣 BTW, if I recall correctly from what I have heard the smeargle thing is do to the fact that they actually swapped his shiny form and his normal form after gen 2, but not in the game cube games So basically in those games we actually see the original color scheme of smeargle
8:14 Smeargle's original sprite in GSC had a red tail tip and it's shiny had a green tail tip. This was changed in generation 3 to what we see in all the current games. Because Pokemon Colosseum and XD: Gale of Dark use Johto Pokemon models from Pokemon Stadium 2, which was based on GSC sprites, it's not a mistake really.
I have one that people may not know; currently im training a Magneton for Special Attack EV's at Route 113 and it has the Magnet pull ability. The amount of Skarmory's you will find is hilariously frustrating ! one time i got 7 Skarmory's back to back so if you need to find Skarmory use a magnet pull ability Pokémon to find more
just a note for shedinja ability in randomizers - it is not that changing its ability is hard. The randomizer has inbuilt limitter that when randomizing abilities shedinja will always have wonder guard. Simply beacuse without it its useless as it always has 1 HP. Until you shuffle or otherwise increase its HP stat without wonder guard this pokemon will die too frequently.
I get that they had strict ad laws, but I fail to see the "stealth" in "gotta catch 'em all" and the Pokerap. Pretty obvious they were meant to market the series to the hip young kiddos.
Man for some reason I was CERTAIN belch can flinch. It's pretty weird that poison doesn't have any flinching moves, I associate it with annoying, kinda unfair tactics as much as I do dark.
The Colosseum Smeargul tail colour isn't actually technically an error, but instead a change that was made between generations. IIRC the main and shiny colours were swapped between gen 2 and 3 but was not changed in Colosseum due to when it had started development. Still a cool fact nonetheless!
Having such a high viewership from non-subscribers means that UA-cam is recommending you, which is good for your long-term growth. I hate it when UA-camrs complain about their viewer subscribership.
I wasn't complaining. It is just stating how there is a high amount of people watching my videos and not subscribing, and generally speaking if that consistently happens a lot of people could be forgetting to subscribe and a subtle reminder that takes what, 3 seconds? isn't hurting anyone
I believe Collosseum's Smeargle wasn't a mistake. I remember as a kid there was promotional material of Smeargle with a red painted tail, and later on was changed go green. My bet is that they did it so it didn't resemble blood
i'm going to hazard a guess that leaving shedinja with wonder guard was intentional, as otherwise it's entirely usesless (unless it's after gen5 and gets sturdy, i guess). it might be worth diving into the source code for the randomizer
6:08 if pokemon had abilities in mind since gen 1-2, imagine ditto having what today we know as zoroark's illusion, so that when you find him in the wild, he would be dosguised as a random wild encounter of the area. I would hate it and it would be great
Pokémon ran on TV 4 originally in Sweden and wasn't ever banned nor did I even hear about it. I watched it every week for years. It did eventually switch TV network tho. Oh yeah and they stopped dubbing the movies for a while until they released a bunch all at once on DVD.
Weird, I live in sweden and was very into pokémon when it came and have never heard about the ban. Watched it every saturday morning til the Hoenn series aired. I also had a lot of merch and collected the pokéball minifigures. I've heard that pokémoncards are banned in some schools nowadays though...
Shedinja's ability isn't difficult to change, it's just that it's useless with 99% of any other ability. Only being good (to an unbelievable degree in later generations) with sturdy.
I'm late, but I need to ask : you have a video when you tell how it was discover arceus in the first days of diamond and pearl? (it was metronome in a togepy)
The reason the games set in the Orre Region, have the shiny and normal versions of Smeargle swapped, is I think, at some point long ago, Smeargle had it's Shiny and non Shiny color variants swapped than we know them today. Green being the Shiny and red color of the tail tip being the normal version. So, if this is true, the developers of Colosseum as well as XD: Gale of Darkness, may have at some point during development of those two games, they were using older Pokemon games as reference material for the Pokemon color palettes, rather than the current ones at the time. Feel free to correct me on this if I'm wrong, as I remember past details incorrectly at times. But, if I recall correctly, green was the Shiny color in Gen 2 and red was the normal color, for Smeargle. Today though, the color of the brush tip of the tail of Smeargle is swapped between those two.
There's also Pokemon that are genderless but classed as Male/Female, like Lunala being the female evolution of Cosmog and Zacian being Zamazenta's older sister
didn't ask
you get it

Someone had found a free Lugia in a pokewalker one day
Do care
I didn't ask either
Another fact I just found out today is that FireRed and LeafGreen are the only games in the series where the Tiny Mushrooms and Big Mushrooms actually have a practical use rather than just something to sell as this game's item for the Move Reminder on Two Island
This is likely because Luvdisc does not show up in FRLG therefore you cannot farm Heart Scale for this purpose.
Because of this it's always hard for me to sell tiny and big mushrooms because I'm like "will they have a purpose in this game?"

Another coincidence with Meowth and Mankey is that their names both start with M and their evolutions names both start with P
Don't forget that Smeargle also has a red tail in Gen 2 games as it's regular sprite, but features a green tail in strategy guides. Smeargle also has a red tail in Pokemon Channel despite not being shiny.
I think technically some legendaries can breed such as Latias, Latios, and Lugia BUT can't breed in captivity
latios and latias cant breed
10:02 I still wonder whenever the whip thing comes up whether the fact that (overleveled) traded Pokémon might ignore your orders is a repurposed remnant of this early stage in which you had to manually tame Pokémon.
did not know that about the mystery dungeon box arts. thats dope !
We didn't ask for these facts, but we needed them!
I never realized how the two Mystery Dungeon artworks connected before!
It's not really a mistake, the gamecube games reuse the stadium models and in gen 2 Smeargle had a red tail, which was made the shiny color in gen 3 onwards, but they never uptaded the 3d model, just reused it.
Please talk more about Magical Pokémon Journey! I love it, and no one ever talks about it in anything other than passing. It sucks.
Thought it would be funny to say that while I was watching this, I found (and caught) a random shiny Bellsprout
9:46 Unown has an autowin Ability?!
Yeah but 35 cards in your hand?
I barley hear anyone talk about magical pokemon journey. I remember finding one issue at my public library (or maybe elementary school library? I'm not certain) when I had to have been in around 3rd or 4th grade. I always thought it was an offbrand until i saw it referenced in niche fact videos like this years later. Weird little series that I wish more people covered for just how distant it feels from all other official pokemon media.
I'm surprised people even know about it at all. Picked up the whole series at my local bookstore as a kid and ended up losing half the volumes when I moved houses.
Did you know, you can catch Heracross in 28/32 main series games since its debut without trading

Legends Arceus
Also to add onto the Smeargle thing:
Pretty sure the Colosseum games [and I think even Battle Revolution] just reused the Stadium models for the Gen1 and 2 Pokemon, and back in Gen2, Smeargle's regular and Shiny appearances were swapped [red was regular, green was Shiny]
Yes, yes, take more of my brain space with weird Pokemon knowledge
I love videos like this! Another iconic item that doesn’t appear in Legends Arceus in any form is the bike!
I always thought that Wyrdeer was our bike in that game, Kinda like Tauros in the Alola games. But yeah that's still not a bike.
Ditto probably tried to activate the Infinite Tsukyomi.
I think that's why I played it so SO much as a kid and now continue to (on the same hardware and cartridge from my childhood) as a grown-ass man
But... I asked for these facts by asking for a new Papasea video when I woke up this morning.
I love stuff like this. please make as many more of these as you want and I will keep watching them
Hey, Smeargle originally had a red tail, it changed in gen 5 I believe to a green tail. Orre got the model right(surprisingly).
i remember that magical pokemon journey manga being in my elementary school library, i checked it out all the time lmao. cool to see it pop up again
Also a useless fact heatran is the only legendery effected by the cutecham glitch in gen 4 even if you have a female gender pool with the glitch you would think cresellia would be affected by the glitch but it doesnt.
"Game Freak says Legends is a main-line game"
Time for the good ol' Avengers quote [that, admittedly, will be butchered as I'm doing it from memory]:
"I heard the council's decision, but given that it is a stupid decision, I've elected to ignore it"
Didn't ask indeed 🤣
BTW, if I recall correctly from what I have heard the smeargle thing is do to the fact that they actually swapped his shiny form and his normal form after gen 2, but not in the game cube games
So basically in those games we actually see the original color scheme of smeargle
Ditto Kakashi
I have one that people may not know; currently im training a Magneton for Special Attack EV's at Route 113 and it has the Magnet pull ability. The amount of Skarmory's you will find is hilariously frustrating ! one time i got 7 Skarmory's back to back so if you need to find Skarmory use a magnet pull ability Pokémon to find more
Magnet pull is known to increase encounter rates for steel pokemon.
I read the magical pokemon journey in elementary school!!! They had some of the volumes in my school library. it was a very cute series
This was a fantastic fact video PaPaSea. You held my attention the whole video. :)
just a note for shedinja ability in randomizers - it is not that changing its ability is hard.
The actual reason that Smeargle has a red ripped tail in those games is because it’s birnal color and shunt color were swapped
The Colosseum Smeargul tail colour isn't actually technically an error, but instead a change that was made between generations. IIRC the main and shiny colours were swapped between gen 2 and 3 but was not changed in Colosseum due to when it had started development. Still a cool fact nonetheless!
Neat video! Thanks for uploading!

I fucking read this as a kid wholly crap the unearthed memories.
Having such a high viewership from non-subscribers means that UA-cam is recommending you, which is good for your long-term growth. I hate it when UA-camrs complain about their viewer subscribership.
I wasn't complaining. It is just stating how there is a high amount of people watching my videos and not subscribing, and generally speaking if that consistently happens a lot of people could be forgetting to subscribe and a subtle reminder that takes what, 3 seconds? isn't hurting anyone
didn't ask, but I love it as always. But that sweet obscure pokemon lore is something I always love learning.
I believe Collosseum's Smeargle wasn't a mistake. I remember as a kid there was promotional material of Smeargle with a red painted tail, and later on was changed go green.
My bet is that they did it so it didn't resemble blood
Thank you, Papa
i'm going to hazard a guess that leaving shedinja with wonder guard was intentional, as otherwise it's entirely usesless (unless it's after gen5 and gets sturdy, i guess). it might be worth diving into the source code for the randomizer
I'm Swedish and I didn't even know Pokemon used to be banned here
Weird, I live in sweden and was very into pokémon when it came and have never heard about the ban. Watched it every saturday morning til the Hoenn series aired. I also had a lot of merch and collected the pokéball minifigures. I've heard that pokémoncards are banned in some schools nowadays though...
Nuzleaf can't use Grasswhistle because the melody makes others uneasy instead of sleepy
Well, the gender of some legendaries could still be useful since there are attract and some of the abilities that take gender into consideration
Papa sea I enjoy your videos a ton just wanted to say that
I'm gonna have to look into that pokemon manga, seems pretty interesting
The intro one I know but the Dragonspiral Tower rematch
There's also Pokemon that are genderless but classed as Male/Female, like Lunala being the female evolution of Cosmog and Zacian being Zamazenta's older sister
The gender for Heatran makes him able to use/targeted by skills like Attract
Just found out this as I played UM as I watched this video: Z in Z-moves comes from the word "Zenith"
