30 different censored female trainers, and Feraligatr is still the most caked up character in all of Pokemon.
They gotta make all the humanoid and bipedal Pokémon thick, not the human females. 😂 For years what have you been trying to tell us gamefreak?
I don't know if it had any sway on naming the PP restoring item an "Ether", but I know in a lot of RPGs at the time used "Ether" as the item that restores magic points. And a Pokemon's PP is essentially their magic points. And since we already had "Potions" maybe making the counterpart "Ether" like in other RPGs was a way to help players understand what it was supposed to do?
I think this is more likely since I have to imagine pp up would come off worse than pp aid
@@matthewdavenport9549 exactly thats what I was gonna say as well
@Zephram This is specifically the chemical substance ether (which was initially used as an anesthesia medication). But, the term ether in general is significantly older than the chemical term ether. Ether in general is a semi-ancient term that was used to describe air, space, and energy. I think it is simply because the chemical use of the term is far less common than the metaphysical use of it. I imagine very few ordinary civilians would know that ether is a real chemical if you mentioned it to them.
...........They still have an item called the "pp up" in the English releases of the games, and a friend of mine likes to jokingly refer to it as "Pokemon viagra" because of this fact
@@matthewkuscienko4616 so if pp up is viagra, would pp aid be UTI medicine?
The Moomoo Milk one is actually a lot more simple and normal; its just a farmer using a special bottle with udders on it to feed a baby pokemon like it would get from its mother. You can see the farmer in the background holding the cow bottle.
yeah, farmers are weirdos even irl
@@CurvaSudJFC ._.
@@CurvaSudJFC no one asked.
@@CurvaSudJFC Animals are used to getting milk directly from their mothers, after all; just the same as a lot of women directly breastfeeding their babies as they naturally always did. It shouldn't come as a surprise that the animals would be more comfortable getting milk from something that resembles their mothers than the usual baby bottle that non-farmers generally use. Even as a non-farmer, myself, I can get that, but I guess that would be because I love animals and, just like farmers and any other pet owners, want the best for them, including for them to be comfortable.
@@Daniel_Coffman farmers literally want money from animal's life and death, that is quite the opposite of "wanting the best for them", but ok, if you say so ill be convinced :)
I feel like your wording implies Lavender Town was made more cherry in GSC as a form of censorship, like "oh it was too spooky so we changed it", but I'm pretty sure they just wanted to show a passage of time and put a new spin on the town. Plus the Pokemon Tower is a radio tower now so the town doesn't have much to be super sad about.
Not much to be sad about after the radio tower was built
Plot twist: it was an AM radio tower
Localization team: winking from pretty girls?! In *my* kids game?! Not on my watch!
Guess they saw that as "suggestive"
@@zigazav1 Considering the main target demographic is young boys, it makes sense that it could be interpreted in such a way. A lot of media aimed at kids tends to be censored heavily to avoid sexual references as much as possible because of this
And slaps
@@matthewkuscienko4616 I don’t think a boy will pay attention the fact that she wink and it was for a seductive reason.
@@positivea9111 Probably not if he's young enough, but they still think it's a good enough reason. Censorship can go a little bit overboard sometimes, but even if that might fly over most kids' heads, they might still be curious about something and ask questions about it, which is probably why they made this decision, regardless rather or not we think it makes sense
i feel like them trying to make lavender town more "cheery" in gsc kinda flops. the town with the only known pokemon graveyard site within at least two regions... tore the entire structure down and replaced it with a radio tower. all those resting places destroyed... its kinda heartbreaking to think about
Repent and follow Jesus! Repenting doesn't mean confessing your sins to others, but to stop doing them altogether. Belief in Messiah alone is not enough to get you into heaven - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Contemplate how the Roman empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years to accomplish the religion of the Israelites C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate though because you can start a relationship with God and have proof. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life. - Revelation 3:20
Revelation has been unfolding since Jesus died. The Popes have claimed to be equal to God and set themselves in Jesus' place (antichrist(s)). Vatican City (Which is its own nation BTW) have risen up to fulfill the role of the false prophet
Regarding the man of lawlessness or antichrist, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 says “Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” The restrainer that the Apostle Paul was referring to in 2 Thessalonians was the Western Roman Emperor, who held back the Popes from taking power. Once the last Western Roman Emperor was removed from power in 476 AD, the Pope was given civil and ecclesiastic authority over Rome; healing the deadly head wound of the beast in Revelation 13, as they took the Emperors title of Pontifex Maximus, leader of the church and state.
“We may according to the fullness of our power, dispose of the law and dispense above the law. Those whom the Pope of Rome doth separate, it is not a man that separates them but God. For the Pope holdeth place on earth, not simply of a man but of the true God.” (Source: “Decretals of Gregory IX,” Book 1, chapter 3.)
Pope Pius V blasphemed, “The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth.” (Source: Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Cities Petrus Bertanous Chapter XXVII: 218.)
Pope Leo XIII declared, “We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.” (Source: Pope Leo XIII Encyclical Letter, June 20, 1894)
The antichrist sea beast of Revelation points to the office of the papacy, the Popes of Rome, who controlled the Roman beast for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD.
Daniel 7:25 says “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” The Popes of Rome spoke against Elohim and proclaimed to be God. They reigned for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD. during which they caused tens of millions of saints to be killed.
The Pope’s title is Vicar of Christ, which in Latin is ‘Vicarius Filii Dei’, and equates numerically to the number 666
06:46 Well that's not actually Feraligatr's butt. Its actual butt would under its tail, not above its tail. But it's still funny as heck.
It's funny that they censored the Torchic fire thing, especially since Ash was burned by Charizard on several occasions in the first few seasons
Ether was known in other RPGs at the time (like Final Fantasy) as an MP restoring item (like the Potion for HP) so I think the localization team wanted to carry in those well-known terms for items with similar functions (PP acting like the MP equivalent lol)
"shut yo bitch ass up homie, and pass me the PP aid, this fight with this girl is gonna take long" - Brock, Probably
They didn't do a very good job editing the sailor sprite since i always thought he was flexing his muscles and only learnt he was giving a thumbs up from this video.
1:29 so like... can you still buy those?
One anime censoring you didn't mention:
In the Alola anime, there was a scene where Meowth saw what was beneath Mimikyu's disguise and almost died because of it.
There was this scene where Meowth just floating on the water faced down and got grabbed up by Jessie and trying to revive him.
I believe this was cut in the English sub.
Meowth did die after seeing Mimikyu but he lost one of his nine lives lol
Didn't he also have a disturbing death face? That might have been cut too.
Yeah, Meowth died in that episode (when uncensored), but came back to life, somehow. In the dubbed version, the entire scene of Meowth being dead while first being with some, let's say, "affectionate" Pokemon, before reaching a dark and spooky segment. In the dub, they instead cut from Meowth's death, straight to the part where his soul or spirit, returns to his body. Skipping that whole somewhat suggestive, then spooky segment. I'm not entirely sure why that death was censored, since Meowth came back afterwards. Ash has died many times in the anime and it's movies, but because anime protag plot armor, he always finds a way to undo his death. Ash's deaths, last I checked, is never censored in the anime and movies. The reason that death of Meowth was censored, was it simply the implications of the death of a reoccurring character in the anime that has been around for years by then? Was it because of the first segment that was somewhat suggestive? Was it because of the spooky segment where Meowth is fleeing from ghosts? Or was it any or all of the above? I'm unsure which exactly I think is the reason that scene got completely cut from the dub. If death of a long-stayer character of the anime is the reason, then it's the same reason why in the Digimon anime's dub, Wizardmon outright dying in action was censored from the dub. Except, unlike Digimon's case, where even censoring the death failed, due to a future episode clearly showing he died, and was supposedly uncensored in reruns of the episode Wizardmon died in, Pokemon's anime's death of Meowth, CAN be covered up, since Meowth's death wasn't permanent, unlike Digimon's anime's Wizardmon's death, as censoring that episode didn't stop a much future episode from clearly showing Wizardmon died with no full return, as he's a ghost now. To be fair, the part in that censored episode of Digimon where Wizardmon's body simply dies, was only a few frames of animation, so kids watching that episode at the time of it first airing, didn't really miss much time of that episode. I hate censorship in anime, games, or otherwise content. Unless maybe, if the censoring is done comedically, such as a specific artist I enjoyed their art of back in the day, where he'd have fun with how he censored his own art, rather than simply blocking or eliminating the NSFW parts of his art without comedic value. I won't say their username nor art hosted location, as kids don't need to see his art right now
Too long, didnt read
@@pikaplayer2870 Can’t read a few sentences? What are you, a child?
I would consider changing the food from onigiri to sandwich a localization change rather than censorship
You mean a Jelly filled donut ;)
About the sailor sprite, the japanese one makes a gesture that in the italian culture means "F**k off". While I don't know how much this gesture resonates outside of that country, I suspect it might also be understood by the italian american community, so maybe that's the reason behind the change.
But the one thing that confused me is why is it censored in America I don’t think it a rude gesture in America unless you used to love in Italy and move to America.
This is definitely a Japanese cultural thing that doesn't translate - that gesture in Japanese (which tends to be applied a little less vigorously than the Italian version, but that's not really visible in a static sprite) means something a lot closer to "you can do it!", so it's encouraging rather than insulting.
@@UnciaAmethice yeah I mistook it as the you can do it pose too.
@@positivea9111 the italian in me still wants to believe that the japanese sailor just likes to tell everyone to piss off though...

Censoring winking is like something from the Victorian era. She winked at you while showing you her ankle -- scandalous.
Ah yes winking the most censor worthy thing in all of Pokemon ,not gambling ,not eerie ghost tower but winking
I believe it's because it's seen as being flirtatious, which I can see why they would change something like this in a game played by people of all ages, and young (potentially adolescent) boys being one of their primary target demographic groups
"PP Aid"= No Go "PP Up"= Yeah, totally cool.
Ill never understand this world.
7:37 I did find it weird why he would be laying on the ground from not having coffee. I actually wore sunglasses when watching the Porygon episode since I had the vast misfortune of catching a glimpse of the seizure effects beforehand.
Love these fact videos. Just when you think you know a lot of poke facts, you get hit with even more newer ones. Love these ones.
After triggering the Missingno glitch for the first time, I realized that I had accidentally produced 255 (I think) PP Ups rather than Master Balls...so what did I do...I maximized a Metapod's "Harden" with "PP Up"s because I was 12 and it was funny.
6:44 - “Some no-no Germans…” hahahaha well played
I used to watch this channel and I saw your comment on a mogul mail video and all the memories came flooding back. I was a huge fan and a member or something anyways its nice to see you
I was just playing Pokemon black and this one swimmer says "how do I get my pokeballs with a swimsuit on " then answer here own question and "says women's secret " 😳
Even without the slapping, Misty was always the original tsundere for me, without even knowing at the time what a tsundere was
I always was pretty interested in the weird localization decisions they have made. Actually didn't know about the Cooltrainer hair edit!
There’s also the Koga‘s Ninja Trick and Sabrina’s Gaze cards and a gen 4 Magmortar card .
The male swimmers in gen 4 were given legs on their swim trunks in the English versions. The original sprite has a speedo.
The Sun and Moon anime censored Meowth dying after seeing Momikyu uncovered.
You should include the manga. Electric Tale of Pikachu really had to alter Misty and Jessie’s outfits…that’s what they get for hiring a artist that usually makes adult manga.
In Pokémon Colosseum’s international version,Rui’s model got a longer skirt and longer top so her midriff was covered.
Nidoqueen got tweaked in the Stadium games because it does a boob grab thing in the original version
6:57 that’s Feraligatr’s bumps on his back actually. I still don’t know how or WHY they didn’t remove it though. JUST LOOK AT IT! They didn’t think it oddly looked like some *thing?!*
SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH, THIS IS WHY YOU NEVER GOT INVIYED TO PARTIES
Then we have Magmars forehead where everybody saw it as a bum-duck or 8oo8ie duck. That went and stays along fine lol
It makes a lot more sense that it’s not cake when you remember Feraligatr has a tail, so it clearly can’t be its crack
It’s just bizarre that they didn’t make it more pointed like they ended up doing for Gen 5
Imma be honest chief I fought those RSE sailors at least over a thousand times in my life and my eyes just completely obscured the thumbs up until you said something, and now I have a headache
Same
The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga. Misty's gym leader swimsuit. And the hotspring scene.
I'll leave it at that.
lol i've never seen that image of Sentret getting his milk from the source that's hilarious
Fs out to porygon being band from the show EVEN THOUGH PIKACHU WAS THE ONE THAT BLEW UP THE SEIZURE MISSILE IN QUESTION CAUSING SAID EXPLOSION, but i guess being a mascot makes you faultless
I wouldn't say that it's to paint Pikachu as being "faultless", but rather because it would require a major retcon to the series if they were to for whatever the reason target Pikachu rather than Porygon. But the thing is, because the episode was primarily focused on Porygon, they decided it was easier to ban it rather than the mascot of the entire franchise
I could be wrong but I remember "gamer" being called "gambler" in gen 1 UK version. I'd have to play blue again to find out but I'm fairly confident of this as I wouldn't have known the term "gamer" but I did know "gambler" and I knew exactly what their name meant.
It was in the U.S too In Gen 1
I'm pretty certain of the same
5:36 Same to you pal!
Fun fact: In Super Mario RPG, Bowser in the JP version did this as his after battle victory pose, it was changed in the US, so seeing this kinda tickled a funny bone.
The Japanese Moomoo milk card is a bit weird (the hands etc). I looked up the artist (Tomokazu Komiya) and their art style is a bit naivistic (some might say "childish"), often, seemingly, using crayons (or oil pastels). Not necessarily bad (I really like some of their other illustrations), just different (compared to say the Misty's tears cards).
(NB: The illustration in the English version is done by the same artist, but the naivism turned down a couple of notches)
2:34
I dunno man, theres some big Diglett statues in Sword & Shield so.. who knows? ;)
(Hope i dont get censored for the winking face)
Heehee, "PP aide".
Made up for me knowing most of the stuff (except for the violence).
hey Sea - if you look at 3d feraligatr you can see that the butt in the gen 3 sprite is not a dumpy but instead yet more back spikes
I think the biggest instances of censorship were from The Electric Tales of Pikachu manga. There was a lot of suggestive content in the original that got censored.
I can proudly say that I knew most of these censorship facts; only the Miracle Bike Shop name change and the Gen 3 anime changes were new to me. Still, it was nice to have a refresher on these Pokémon censorship facts and it was nice to have so much info delivered in a decently paced and decently witty manner.
The porygon incident was such a shame
i have been obsessively learning about pokémon and watching pokémon videos for so many years that not even these videos have any facts i don’t know. it’s a curse. i need more pokémon facts that i don’t know !!!
I'm always happy for more pokemon facts to shove in my brain
I always thought the medium was holding a tambourine 😅
idk if the comments have mentioned it yet, but I'm surprised that one episode of in indigo league the scene where misty holds up a crucifix to ward off a gastly wasn't cut
There was also an entire episode of the Sun and Moon anime that was cut from the English dub that involved Ash being disguised as a Passimian. The episode was likely banned due to concerns of Ash looking like he was doing black face.
5:40 actually makes sense because the Japanese version is another way of Flipping someone off.
...I thought I at one point had the "Misty's Tears" Japanese art on an English card. That said, we're talking about something I haven't physically seen in about 20 years...so maybe it was the Japanese card.
At this point I won’t be surprised if they censor Machoke and Machamp design because they wearing a boxing short to those Sweatpants from Pokémon Sword and Shield Machamp Gigantamax form in the future.
Wow. There is a surprising amount of Pokémon censorship. I knew some of this, but not all.
Great video as always :)
the feraligatr sprite from gen 3 doesn't show it's butt, those are its back spines/bumps. like you would see on a real alligator's back
That is true, but it's extremely common for people to mistake it for it's butt due to ignorance (and maybe also not knowing much about anatomy), which likely led to it being changed later in the series to obscure this for it's back view sprite
But we were fine to have Magmars forehead front sprited at us on the regular. They had such odd ideas what is and isn't
Japan: It's called a PP aid! It restores PP!
America: 🤨
🤨
So you’re trying to tell me that they didn’t allow “pp aid” but they did allow “pp up?” 😂
07:03 Oh so PP-aid was censored and changed but PP-up (which is way funnier) was no problem at all?
PP Up is the English name but I get your point. The Japanese name is Point Up. Speaking of which what was PP Max? PP Max is the English name, Japan just called it as Point Max
"Fella's? Are you tired of being letdown in the bedroom? Ask your doctor about PP-Up, and the extra strength PP-Max and see if it's right for you, because in those intimate moments, u can't afford to be LETDOWN, Get PP-Up today!" *Cue fast talking disclaimer and side effects*
In the international versions (It may be in all versions) of sun and moon there is a sexual reference in the battle royal dome that was only changed in usum. In the sun and moon games, once the masked royal tells gladion to join he says "great now we have a foursome" in which Hau is taken aback. Masked royal then says "in Pokemon of course" in which Hau calms down to. In usum however Hau says "does he has to join as well" to masked royal
People forget Feraligator has a tail… it’s the shape of his leg and the base of his tail
5:11 I recall looking at the cutting room floor for the spaceworld 1997 demo of Pokémon Gold and came across a version of the swimmer with a clear bikini shot, just thought I'd mention it
Edit: Yeah I checked again and it's there lmao

It appears that during the time between G/S/C and HG/SS, the American localization team had become more culturally accepting, which is why the Monks' prayer beads aren't changed anymore, the Medium still has her prayer beads worn in the English version of HG/SS, etc.
But wait why American have a hard time accepting different cultures? Did they worry they think it will be racist for learning new culture.
@@positivea9111 Well, a lot of it is religious in nature much like the Monks' prayer beads and original praying pose, so the video game market in general may have been worried about indoctrinating children into religion rather than really seeing it as a cultural thing. Though that's without talking about how religions including Christianity have always been indoctrinating children anyway as that's a separate beast from the video game market.
Though in cases like the original Persona taking place in Japan explicitly outside of the many Personas taking the forms of deities and demons across all cultures, it may have also been simply the thought that no one would get it because they're not a part of that culture. Some people do tend to think that you'll never be able to understand what you don't experience first-hand; like a culture that you're not yourself already a part of. This is only my own speculation on either part, however, so really I've no idea what was going on in their minds back then.
@@Daniel_Coffman Even then that kinda stupid because there could be some people who know it and the it just a kid games make it the problem.
@@positivea9111 I certainly can't disagree. I'm always glad that American video games are much more open to including cultural things now and not just "Americanizing" everything and making things give far less of an impact. Though it's somewhat unfortunate that Ame-no-Uzume"s cleavage is censored in Pocky and Rocky Reshrined as her breasts, in Shinto mythology, pretty much saved Japan and the world multiple times. Thus the censoring can be seen as a little bit disrespectful toward Shinto.
The episode with Carvana didn’t have the scenes cut out in Pokémon TV
Another great video PaPa 😁 some new facts I didn't know about

About Lavender Town. I played pokemon Red when I was like 5 or 6 i think? And yeah it sounded so creepy thar I always turn off the volume whenever I'm in Lavender town lmao.

A censorship you forgot about is changing Shuriken in an episode of Sun & Moon to look more childish.
There are also multiple instances of censoring...mainly Pokemon names and move names in the Simplified Chinese games.
They censored a bunch of negative words that were used in previous translations and swapped them out with more neutral words.
Like "Forest Curse" got censored into "Forest Jujutsu", apparently curse is something that shouldn't show up in a game.
I want forest curse to be called forest jujutsu now
But didn’t they have a ghost move called Curse?

All hale Dr. Brock, lord of the drying pan and maker of jelly donuts.
Some of the male swimmers in the first few generations had their sprites edited too. The Japanese versions oftentimes had the swimmers wearing speedos but were changed to trunks/jammers in the American releases. Apparently skimpy bikinis on women is fine but speedos on men aren't lol
You have to understand that such swimwear is more normal on females than males, and a speedo would draw attention to a man's "buldge" because of how small it is compared to the swim trunks normally seen
