Totally agree with your point about his double bass, I realised that, so refreshing to see a metal drummer not go over the top with it. Plays it smart!
Man am I glad I found you not many people can really get me interested when they talk but something about the way you narrate this makes it hard to get up from my chair keep up the good work
Same here. Danny Carey and Igor Cavelara showed me how to play drums. Also listen to Aenima every time I lift weights. Pumps me up. Nice to see others feel the same way. Back from '92 from the first stampede ;)
Nice seeing another drummer react to Carey! I would say ‘triad drum cam’ is my absolute favorite drumming video of his. Its not great quality but he plays it so different from the album and it’s just awesome. If you get a chance, react to that one
"They're heavy and they're scary and they're awesome." Yeah that's pretty accurate. Man. I'm no musician, and I only really understand half of what is in this video, but I will watch anything Tool related.
As a guitarist Tool time signatures are so much fun to play. As not a drummer it seems like a nightmare but the whole relax tension bit was good advice. Great video!
Man I totally agree. I think their guitar parts are extremely technically easy because they’re mostly clear patterns. I don’t bother with counting a 13/8 or 6/4 to 5/4 change as opposed to just memorizing the patterns. Jambi is the best example. Couldn’t imagine drumming it tho...
Happy birthday man and thanks for the insight to a non musician. Saw tool in 2006 and spent pretty much the whole show watching mr. Carey. He is amazing. I don't play drums but this was very informative and well made. Things like counting quarter notes with the hi hat was something I didn't notice until you talked about it. Don't mean to write a whole book here but anyways man nicely done. More Tool!
His background is as a Jazz musician. You can definitely hear the jazz influences in his playing. Especially the improvisation as you point out and the off-notes and off-melodies he plays.
Happy birthday! Anything from Mastodon. I saw them live in 2017 and Brann was an octopus behind the kit. I'd also love to see you breakdown Bill Ward's drumming from War Pigs (1970), or Dave Lombardo with Slayer live in HULTSFRED 2002 (Raining Blood or Postmortem).
I love Tool!!!! Saw them last week and they F'N killed. Super awesome, spectacular and all around amazing. EPIC!!!!! Danny Carey is the best drummer. There is no other. I love your vlogs. They're awesome. I especially love the Danny Carey breakdowns.

There is a video of Danny Carey doing a drum session of Rosetta Stoned. You may want to check that out when you have some time. Thanks for the video! Btw Danny also has a side jam type band called Volto, very intricate drumming. Ok, thanks again!
One like isn’t enough for this. I’ve given up on explaining my “favorites” of music to others because often it is something as minuscule as a two measure flip of a hi-hat pattern that ignites whatever makes my life worth living. You did a great job of pointing out some of those little things that Danny does so well. Full disclosure: Danny Carey is my favorite drummer, and I could type for hours on the reasons why he brings me to my knees as a musician. You could react to any tool video and any tool member and I’d fangirl over it.... but honestly, there is a darn good reason. You say that there is a lot for a drummer to learn from Danny Carey, and I would add... there is a lot that ANY type of musician can learn from Danny. I watch his drum cam videos and it makes me want to work on being better at everything I do. He’s a beast. Not sure if he specifically studied music in school, but it wouldn’t be surprising. I know that he travels the world NOW going to universities to share the things he has learned and also to take classes and learn. He applies a lot of these “uncommon to the western ear” rhythms and patterns into Tool’s more eclectic songs. There are a few other decent Danny videos out there... I’d love to hear more of your take on his work!
If you could post some other Danny Carey vids it'd be appreciated. I looked for an hour and that was the best I could come up with. Hey bud Danny Carey has a new Vic Firth drum cam video for Pneuma, that has excellent video and audio..!
You mentioned "Sober"... I participated in a fun competition a couple years ago at the local university bar called "The Pub". The competition was called PUB also, but was short for Pick-Up Band. Individual musicians sign up by name and instrument. They create 4-5piece bands by random selection, but the catch is that you don't know who you are matched with until 24hours before your performance. In that 24 hours, each random group must prepare two covers and one original. The guitar player INSISTED on doing a Tool song, and we landed on "Sober." I've played hard rock for a long time, but the idea of pulling off a Danny Carey groove in less than 24 hours had me nervous!
Worse was that the rehearsal had to be quick runs thru covers to give more time for the original. When we tried it, my left foot did not want to cooperate at all. LOL. So as I sat waiting for our turn at the competition, I toe-tapped through the foot patterns under the table trying to force muscle memory. That must have worked because after our set everyone thought I nailed that song, and my bandmates asked me how I pulled that together in the hour between practice and the show. ( I know it wasn't up to my standards, but it felt good to know I had everyone else fooled!)

Happy birthday Steve. Great analysis on Danny Carey. Just an idea for your next react video. Mike Wengren from Disturbed.
Dammey Carey has a brain in each limb.

Probably my favourite live drum solo was Billy Cobham's solo on "One Word" with the Mahavishnu Orch.. That may change if I ever see The Aristocrats.
This is harder then most other bands hardest song and this song is on the lower end of there difficulty. Tick and leeches, the grudge
actually Rosetta Stoned is probably their most musically complex song
