There is a difference between Randal Adventure Training knives and Randall knives made in Orlando Florida US.
It's not a problem, because Peltonens knife is inferior to both.

The Peltonen blades were made by Fiskars in the past, and finished by mr. Peltonen. But Peltonen moved the production of its blades to Laurin Metalli, using the same 80CrV2 carbon steel that Laurin also uses for the Terava knives (which is a fantastically tough tool steel, won't break, holds a good working edge and is easy to sharpen). The handle mentions 'Fiskars' as Mr. Peltonen actually lives in the town of Fiskars, and the numbers 10470 are the postal code for his address. He still makes the sheaths himself, and apparently the final edge bevel is done by a good friend of his who is a well-known knife maker and blacksmith. Note that Peltonen moved to Laurin after the Laurin-made Terava knives came to market as a viable alternative to the Peltonen blades. Maybe the production by Fiskars was not reliable enough.
Both sheaths are very good... But I like the Terava one more as the hard plastic insert protects the blade all around, and the one in the Peltonen sheath is L-shaped and only protects the edge. Like with many classic puukko sheaths, it is possible for the sharp blade tip to penetrate the unprotected leather on the side of the spine. It happened to me once. It's really sharp... If the sheath on the Peltonen seems a bit too tight, slightly sanding off a mm or so from the front hand guard will get it to sheath and unsheath one-handedly with the proper amount of 'soft' resistance from the rubber wheel. Retention will still be fine.
Anyone looking for the Peltonen knives can find them usually in stock at the Lamnia web store in Finland. The Terava knives are only sold by the Varusteleka outdoor/military gear/surplus store, also in Finland. For years the Peltonen knives were rarely in stock anywhere, so Varusteleka decided to get their own similar knives made, also aimed at Finnish soldiers. Finland still has conscription, and Finnish soldiers are not issued knives at all, they must bring their personal knives when entering military service. They buy the Peltonen and Varusteleka knives in droves and use them for all kinds of camp and general utility tasks while training as northern-forest guerilla 'ranger' and 'jeager' soldiers. The Fins are very proud of their puukko and leuku knives. And rightly so.

Not many comparisons between the Peltonen and the Teravas to be found on the web, although that would be a logical thing to do. So this video and the comments its provoked really add to the planet's 'knife knowledge'. Great job.

There's a simple reason why the Jääkäripuukko knives are so similar to the two Peltonnen knives. Varusteleka also sells the Sissipuukko knives. But those are only available in homoeopathic batches. People kept asking Varusteleka when they would have more Sissipuukkos in stock. There obviously was a high demand so they decided to simply make their own knife inspired by the Peltonnen. As it turns out, they were right. Even the Jääkäripuukkos often sell out in a few hours when a new batch arrives.
That makes so much sense. Thinking about it I am amazed I hadn't worked that out for myself.

Ok, thanks for the review. I decided to go with the Sissipuukko, I just like the handle a bit more, and overall profile of the knife. Though they are both great. This has become immidiately my favorite overall knife.

Jääkäripuukko has a pretty solid following among knife reviewers,so people who handle thousands of knives actually bring a Jääkäripuukko budget blade from finland not the highend things they review into the woods off camera,they heat treat the blades in a very special way that makes them behave just like laminated high carbon steel hard on the outside softer on the inside so its strong but easy to sharpen,the handle can work itself loose from heavy use over time,but i guess thats true of every rubber handle,coldsteel gets the same problem with heavy use and time and wear,some good quality knives doesn't have to be super expensive.
I have heard of the handle working lose on the skrama. Easy to see why that would happen a lot more with a big knife used more as a chopper.
In my opinion the Jääkäripuukko is a really good knife. Then again people consider it to be a budget knife, but for me it is actually quite an expensive one, all of my knives are budget knives.

The thing with Jääkäri is that you can attach the handle firmly with simple heat, now try do that with any other handle. Rubber has its ups and downs, but Jääkäri is made to situation where you just have to make do with what you have.
Good blade with handle that won't break and will be easy to reattach if need be.

They are truly great knives, and the only knife sheath that I prefer over the Jääkäripuukko is the Peltonen. The Jääkäri is a very solid knife.

Funny, how you and I have/had many of the same ones. So this bloke sold off his 110 Terävä stainless, utterly frustrated as he couldn't seem to sharpen it. I was happy to happy to receive the source of his misery for a tenner. And a bit later another bloke wanted to throw away his 140 in carbon steel. I obliged him too. Sold the 140 about the same time I sold the JP. But still have and use the 110 stainless.
A tenner, bloody hell what a bargain.
I have actually not used my 140 in a while. Maybe I will take it into the woods on my next day off.

Two great blades, I Think our special forces (SOG) here in Sweden was the first military unit to adopt the M95, I have both the Terävä and the M95 and I´m very happy with both of them.

I love my 140 and sold on my sissipuukko m07 because it wasn't seeing any action anymore. Both are fantastic knives...80crv2 is just the best carbon steel around, it's a bloody joy to sharpen.
I agree, I love mine,haven't touched up my blade yet,still decently sharp, got it back In April, tough ass Lil knife,it'll do whatever it'll need an more,but still want the skrama for bigger tasks, but if all I had is my 140,I'll be ok out in the bush.
Yes it's a great steel, out of all of the knives that I own I don't think there is any better steel. Both really great knives too and not expensive.

@@KuukkeliBushcraft Yeah, the Skarma is a beaut and about the best chopping knife I ever used...I de-limb about a 50 trees every Spring as we use wood to heat the houses (x2) and the water over the long Winters here and the Skarma can do it as well as a small forest axe, no worries.
I have a vintage Fiskars from the 70’s or 80’s that looks almost the same with a 5 1/2 inch blade. Interesting. The scales are almost the same, but with a brass cap on the end. 🎸🔪
Fiskars made some very nice knives back in the day. I can't say I have seen one quite like yours. There was quite a bit of variation. But they certainly were one of the pioneers of the synthetic handled puukkos.

That's really interesting how similar those two are! Personally I don't pay much attention to the style/type of grind of a knife. Not sure why, just a quirk of mine. I love a well balanced knife. However that's a good point about wanting a heavier blade for chopping. 7:00 Holy helicopter! That is a sturdy sheath and I like the snap too. That roller dohickey on the next sheath sure is smart! Also being about to mount on MOLLE gear is nice too. Great comparison! At a glance they could be mistaken as the same knife.
They do function just the same and I am really impressed by both sheaths. The difference in grind doesn't seem to make a massive difference either.

Yes the sheaths are great. I should get a Skrama too but as I already own 3 leukus and often carry an axe it seems a bit too much. Probably will buy one one day.

I have an earlier M95 and I do like the more pointy design. I have the lighter weight plastic sheath which keeps the package really trim so easier to find room on say a pouch belt order. My M95 has a tiny movement in the grip as there isn't quite enough mould area to tang (wonder if this has been improved??). The Terava has far more and cut outs to mould about.
The Terava 140 does splitting better, and the M95 pointy things better. Both are a great choices. Both are tough and beat on them knives, though they do need regular sharpening.

You can get it shipped to the USA, I believe its not so expensive. The only place that does sell the Jääkäripuukko is Varusteleka in Helsinki.
I have seen lots of reviews from American channels. One said that they received it in 3 days from Finland. Very strange it always takes over a week for Varusteleka to get stuff to me, and that's without the Corona virus.

Both great knives but I sold my Sissipuukko M07 and kept my Jääkäripuukko 140. It was the sheath and slightly narrower handle was what sold me on the Terava over the Peltonen...only by a mickey whisker if truth be told.
Both knives are A plus quality and that 80CrV2 steel is an incredible knife steel that has become my favourite to date.

Very strange with the Teflon coating on the Peltonen, it did start to wear off but seems to have stopped, still looks just like it did on the video. Will do a review on the stainless some time soon. I really can't say wich one I like the best so hard to choose between them. Both great knives and I think 80CRV2 is my favourite steel too at least out of the knives that I own (I am sure there is some super steel out there somwhere that I can't afford that's better).

@@KuukkeliBushcraft Thanks for the videos mate...super steels don't get me started...I reckon they are a pile of the "consumer must have" nonsense out there. Personally I want a softer steel that I can easily sharpen and have to sharpen often so I get the practice and a feel for sharpening technique. I want a steel that can hit the ground and not chip out and when it does that I can remove the damage inside a reasonable amount of time on non-specialized equipment. Anything else doesn't make any sense to me personally. 80CRV2 and 12c27 are sweet spot steels for my own usage...cheap too :-). Later mate and thanks again.
P.S. that teflon stuff is bomb-proof you'll see.

У меня есть Sissipuukko-M07 и клинок не такой как у вас , а имеет треугольное сечение. Я также узнал , что край лезвия уплотнялся с помощью прессования края, в раскалённом виде. Если снять рукоять от резины, то хвост ножа не лента, а непростая прессованная форма. Я полагаю на вид они одинаковые но технология у них разная.

Really hard to say, I feel the Jääkäri is a little more solid construction but I do find myself using the Peltonen a lot more. So I would have to say the Peltonen.

Hello out there in Finland, we'll put on getting variations on knives from factories, it happens time to time,mine was razor sharp when received an bevel straight on point, both are great knives also your black coating on the 85 can be removed if you choose I'm told with steel wool,it's helps keep the blade from rusting,I've seen some folks put a polish like mirror shine on theirs an as long as you wipe it down afterwards an oil it,then no problem some people even strip it an serra coat it ,just a preference really,we'll anyway ty for video from here in United States , I live in east Tennessee around mountains an plenty of trees. We fixing to go into fall weather here.
They are great knives, think I will keep the coating on the 85 though, I have enough little projects like that in my mind that I never seem to get round to making time for. Enjoy the fall in Tenessee and thank you very much for watching.
I wonder why tevera stopped producing the pukko in stainless? I'm fine with the 80crv2 but if im going to be in an unpredictable situation I'd rather have stainless.
I think they had a few too many of them breaking. A good bit more brittle than the 80CRV2. Mine has done absolutely fine. I just think that a lot of people are far too hard on their knives. If you're struggling to batton through a log and are struggling, the solution isn't always a bigger batton🤣.

13:27 Someone has probably already replied to this, but the black isn’t a coating as such, it’s a remnant of the forging process that has been left instead of polishing off.😁 The sissipuukko is next on my purchase list, has been for a while actually. I think I’ll put it through my Ken Onion to give it a bit of a convex grind though, that should just give it the edge (pardon the pun) when feather-sticking as I believe it can be a wee bit too slicy for such things. Have you had any experience with Rokko knives, I saw one on Dutch Bushcraft Boys then checked them out on Lamnia, they look pretty damn good, differential hardening and Rhomboid blade shape and the sheath looks pretty good as well.
The black on the carbon steel Jääkäripuukkos is from the forge, however on the Sissipuukko it is a Teflon coating.
My experience of the Rokka knives is not quite as positive as many other people. I got one of the very earliest produced and like many of the early ones there was a problem with the handle. It started to split and come away from the tang.
Also I am not a big fan of the progressive treated 80CRV2 blades. I find the cutting edge a little too brittle and chippy.
Other than that it is a great knife. The edge geometry is absolutely fantastic, handle comfortable, the sheath works great (even if it is very different). I did do a review (just before the handle started to die😂).
The Sissipuukko is a great knife and with a convex grind will be even better.

I could be totally off, but I think I saw a talk the designer gave and he talks of his inspiration. My memory is that he said he handled a Randall knife and was impressed/inspired.
Of course, both (~repelled by Rambo/ inspired by Randall) could be true at the same time.
Have you ever tried a scandi-vex or convex grind? Here in Aus they work better for me on our mostly very hard wood.
Randall knives makes sense. Think I have probably been spreading a bit of fake news with the Rambo knives thing (unintentionally). I would definitely call this a sabre grind but people's definitions do vary and a lot of Finnish knives tend to fall between the two. Depends on the height or angle of the grind the thickness of the blade and your opinion on micro or secondary bevels. To my mind the angle of the grind and the presence of a secondary bevel makes this a sabre grind. Most of the knives I use I buy with a scandi and most of them now have a scandivex. Can't say I have any with a true convex grind. I should experiment with putting a convex edge on one of my Moras. That could be a nice idea for a video actually. Both of these knives are amazing and desirable, and equally indestructible.
It is worth having and using both, or use Peltonen for smaller tasks, and buy Terrava Skrama for larger ones.
I don't think it is really worth having both, unless you just like knives 😂. It might make sense to have the smaller version of one and the larger version of the other. If I carry something for finer tasks it is usually a regular puukko. The Peltonen and the Jääkäri are both better for the rougher work although they perform well on fine tasks too. Jacks of all trades.

Personally, I have been using the Hudson Bay knife from Condor for some time. In Poland, where I live, it is quite an exotic production. The knife itself looks like a million dollars, almost as if Tom Hardy lost it while filming The Revenant.
Peltonen knives can be bought in Poland without any problems, Terrava knives can be bought in the Finnish Lamnia store, but you can also order them from the Czech brothers, because they import Terrava and sometimes it's even cheaper than buying in Lamnia. Greetings from Poland.
@@marcinos303 I was talking about the Jääkäripuukko rather than the Skrama. But the Peltonen Mo7 and Skrama 240 would be a good combo. In his case it would definitely be worth having a Peltonen and a Terävä. The Hudson already looks like a very good knife.

Maybe they will start stocking them again one day who knows. Glad I got the stainless to be honest (otherwise now I have the sissipuukko I would have 2 nearly identical knives).

Good video. I have a Jääkäri knife 110. It is a bit heavy. But it does what it has to. A good tool. But in cooking it is not good. If I had more money, I would consider the Korpisoturi knive made by Rokka Knives. It is lighter and very sharp.
Maybe a Sissipuukko might be a good compromise? Higher grind and better at food prep than the Jääkäri and much cheaper than the Rokka.
It is really hard to find a knife that does everything well.

You could get a Mora companion for around $15. I use mine for the camp kitchen and it works well enough for me. But then, I'm not much of a cook. Lol.

Hey mate, how you doing. I have used a skrama once, years ago when they first came out. They do have a bit of a reputation for the handle slowly slipping off the tang. I think that is only with a lot of very heavy use though.
I hear its a really good tool otherwise. Maybe I will get one, one of these days. Hope you are well mate and keeping yourself out of mischief.
I do have the Sissipuukko in both sizes but the older full flat grind ones. I only noticed recently that the model has changed to a saber grind. I also have all 3 sizes of the Jääkäripuukko and the two bigger sizes of the Skrama. And I have a lot of Enzo/Brisa and some other stuff so the Finnish already have my money. LOL All very good knives. But for many of the places I go I do prefer stainless. But nice introduction of the knives.

The sissipuukko has gone through several changes over the years and most incarnations have been full flat grind. Saw a really old on on auction here a little while ago. I did bid on it but then the price went a bit crazy 😂. I should get myself a Skrama. Carbon steel is good in this environment, not too damp here and the moisture is all frozen for 7 months anyway.

The Skrama's are great, both the bigger ones. I don't mind carbon steel on my heavy duty camp knives at all since I don't mind some rust when I'm chopping or batoning.
I somehow always find myself at some coast or near it, at rivers, lakes, streams, swamps, etc. so for the food prep knife I prefer stainless. But that's easily fixed with a stainless Hultafors or Mora.

I have organized a combined basic and intermediate bushcraft and survival course with a school in Argentina, just waiting for this world to open up again. So it's postponed for a year now already and still don't know what to bring. LOL
I discovered a new brand (new to me) called Joker knives from Spain that have a nice line up of bushcraft/survival knives or camp knives as I call them and they are great but now add to the choice. If you like knives you should check them out. I have no affiliation with them but right now the price vs quality is outstanding!
@@StevanOutdoor the mini puukko doing great bud, it's a good little knife. Many advantages to stainless steel. To be honest I would never say I prefer stainless or high carbon. I think you have to judge each steel individually. I like lauris 80CRV2. Tough, reliable, easy to sharpen and affordable.
@@KuukkeliBushcraft I only have a general preference for stainless or carbon about the rust resistance for food prep. I do like the mini puukko so happy to hear you have good experience with it. But I also almost always take a dip in the drink with knife and all and with the trip to Argentina most likely both in fresh and salt water. Sure it can handle it with some TLC without problems even. I just don't like babysitting my knives so I want them to be care free. And I have a lot of knives so I do have a choice. ;)

The Peltonen, I find the grind very versatile and I absolutely love the sheath, in particular the carry options. I have a very nice way of attaching it to my salooetts in the winter.

I have to say that I think I like the M95 more. But I don't think it is for any sensible practice reason I just think it's cooler 😂. The sheath is really well thought out but I do think that the Jääkäri is a more sturdily built knife too.

I got the Terava and was surprised to find the sheath had a full plastic insert I had wanted to get the kydex or full plastic one they but they were sold out... fuckin loved it once I got it!
I think the leather sheaths for both these knives are fantastic. Very well made and excellent retention. Great knives too.

I have Both and have used both for years now . The sissipuukko wins hands down.

I bought two jaakaripuukko,s from varusteleka and both had terrible defects in the grind. Have to say I am really not impressed with their quality. I have been waiting FOREVER for them to get the M95 or even the M07 in stock but it never comes. Depressing.

Sorry to hear about the Jääkäripuukkos, very unlucky to have 2 with defects.
You could have sent them back, Varusteleka has a very good reputation for solving such things. They would probably just have replaced them. If you want the Peltonen knives, Lamnia usually has them in stock, and like Varusteleka shipping abroad is fairly cheap and fast. I guess the Finnish postal service is just good and affordable (it may take more time due to the Corona problem but that's not their fault).
@@FrankSchweppe the Finnish postal service works great in the southern half of the country (where all of the people live). From the Jääkäripuukko reviews I have seen Varusteleka can ship to the USA in 3 days. Takes a week for them to get stuff up here😂. I get most of my knives from Lamina (not that they get here any faster). They have a great selection.

The 140 I have been using for about 4 years now. It was my main bushcraft knife before I started my channel. I would trust the Jääkäripuukko more when it comes to strength as it is a lot clearer as to what the thickness of the tang is and I don't entirely trust rubber handles.
The sissipuukko however has given me absolutely no problems whatsoever and does seem to be tough enough. I have also not heard of any one else having one fail on them so I believe the doubts in the back of my mind are false ones.
I now rarely use the Jääkäripuukko and use the sissipuukko a lot. I prefer the edge geometry and the extra carry options also play a very big factor (expecially in the winter).
They are both fantastic knives but if I had to choose, I would have to say the Sissipuukko.

Is it possible to put the j.p knife in the jakaari puuko sheath as they are similar in size
The JP fits perfectly in the Jääkäripuukko sheath. Very tight fit the other way round as in possibly sheath streaching tight.

Does the sissipuuko have the same handle splitting problems as the rokka korpisoturi knife?
I have not had that issue with the sissipuukko nor have I ever heard of anyone else having that issue with the sissipuukko and it is a knife that has been used by many people for many years here in Finland. It does however have the same seam line along the handle so I am not sure what the difference is. I am kind of hoping that the splitting issue with Rokka knives was just teething trouble and only an issue with the older runs of the knife. Hopefully this issue has been resolved by now and as far as I am aware this has never been an issue with the sissipuukko.

I actually think I prefer the Peltonen but there isn't much in it. I like the blade profile more even though it is probably a little less robust. But it is very close. Thanks for watching.
It has taken me 2 years but I don't think they are similar.
They are but they aren't 😂 the blade/edge geometry is quite different. Other than that very similar, well both very black. Handle material synthetic, different but not wood. Both leather sheaths with cool ideas when it comes to retention. Different ideas though. The similarities are more obvious that the differences but the differences are quite substantial.
Where did you learn about knives? Anfield?

@@KuukkeliBushcraft haha.. in fact you know more about knives that many many people on here. Preppers who are just fantasists, using their knives to sharpen sticks. I've yet to see anyone butcher a carcass then cook a meal using their knife.
@@skipmole612 that would certainly make a better video than one of those unboxing vids or reviews of nice shiny unused knives. The only thing I have butchered on here is a fish😂. Hopefully I will get my Finnish hunting permit one day. Would like to snare some willow grouse. Because they are very very good to eat and people don't always want to share😂.

😂🤣 Do I look that old really. The hat is a verikauha (blood ladle). It was worn by the Finnish army for most of the 20th century. Including the winter war against the Russians. So it was around during world war two (I definitely was not)

Kuukkeli Bushcraft that’s the one. That word looks like a word I’m trying to focus on when I’ve been on the piss ! I never picked up any Norwegian and the Finnish plus Swedish was worse. Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110, Carbon Steel is the one mate.
@@edwindude9893 I thought so, Finnish is a nightmare mate. Sweedish and Norwegian have at least some germanic words that sound like English but Finnish is totally alien, and the grammar is insane.
Kuukkeli Bushcraft I can get along in Germany after a week or so. I’d like to get back out to Scandinavia in the future. If you have any influence get a neck knife designed by these guys. I love the pukko.
@@edwindude9893 can't say I have any influence, but the 85 Jääkäripuukko would work as a neck knife. If it only had the hole in the bottom of the sheath like the larger models do you could wear it upside down too. The sheath retention with that snap would be plenty safe enough.
