I'm pretty sure the chronograph was set for meters per second on that test. 167 meters per second comes out to about 550 feet per second. At under 200 feet per second, that bullet would never have had that kind of penetration in the gel.
That was my first thought as well. That's about what I'd expect from a very short-barreled .38. I'd estimate around 600 FPS out of a 2" barrel, so that totally tracks. 167 FPS is more what I'd expect from an arrow, not a bullet.

Under normal cases, it's probably not even supposed to be used, and if it is, very little, also definitely one not to carry concealed loaded, because it's easier to set off then a gun accidentally, but the manual reload of rounds makes it subjectively safer and a form of self defense that absolutely No one should argue as it doesn't house several shots.
I think the manufacturer expected people to pull it out to show friends and maybe shoot a round or two. Scott put way more than they ever expected through it, lol.
I agree, I think it was meant to be a party piece, nothing more. There is one other possibility however; the fact that Scott stuck the knife into the target and fired at the same time may have also placed extra stress on the gun, since the "forward" part that contains the blade and barrel was quite securely lodged in the pineapple, whilst the "rear" part that contains the firing chamber, breech, and handle was forced backwards by the recoil. This was obviously strong enough to separate the two pieces, and maybe the manufacturer didn't intend for the gun to be fired while stuck in a target. Perhaps as a dual purpose weapon, this gun was meant to be used as EITHER a gun or a knife at any one moment, and not both at the same time. Who knows? lol

I never got understood how that works. Like there was no barrel, i always thought and still do, that it doesnt shoot but rather make the swings stronger when he press the trigger.
This is the first video I saw in this channel and I always liked the concept of a weapon like this. As described, this dagger gun seems most effective as a melee weapon with the pistol dealing a killing blow if aimed at a vital spot when fired. Since it can only hold one bullet at a time before reloading and since it's a short barrel it's definitely not built to rely on range combat.
I suppose it can also give you a free hit before getting close. Like, firing a shot off from what seems to be a knife would probably shock and frighten a foe leaving them open. Although an obvious gun would probably discourage any physical attacker from coming close at all...
@@XenonPrimeSBSV You would either use it the way the video shows (stab and shoot) or if in a duel, use the blade to move the opponent's blade out of the way and then shoot him in the face up close.

It's fun to see that this kind of things keeps coming back up throughout history. We have surviving sword-guns, mace-guns, axe-guns... From back to the 1500's at least. There was a period in England where there were a lot of guns and concealed gun-sword-canes and the like existed. Pretty wild stuff. You could probably do a good series on weird things with guns in them. Maybe collab with a history tuber that might have access to fire something historical?
there was a lot of stuff like that but most were made as art or a show of craftsmanship. they regularly used because its the worst of both worlds. you are either gunna have a melee weapon with extra weight and bulkiness that fires not very well or a gun with extra weight and bulkiness that you can sometimes hit someone with. the best we ever came up with was bayonets, cuz it was just a spear, the all round best weapon due to how simple it is.
@@jak199527 Some of the axe guns seem like they maintained a pretty good axe shape while making room for the gun bits. Made for a short barrel, but it seems like more of a fire a bullet while closing into axe range weapon where bayonets are stab him if he gets too close while you're shooting weapon.
1500's? I know, gunpowder has a long history, but really usable handguns weren't a thing back then. They used bows and crossbows. Imagine, you have a one shot gun, that takes about a minute to reload and the cavalry is charging. You at least want a spear tip at the end of your musket. That's where it actually makes sense, to add a blade to a handgun and where the idea most likely comes from. The rest is gimmicky and useless, you're better off, buying and carrying a lighter gun and a lighter knife than a fowl compromise of both.
I just realized why getting your channel logo tattooed on your inner forearm was genius. He will never have to use a watermark for his slowmow footage, its always there so nobody ever has to wonder "who made this?"

nice video scott, about the gunknife, this is miles away from my field, but for an item thats gonna be used for wacking and shooting, that pin its handling too much strain on its own.
I think a lever action for a drop block would maybe last longer than what we see in the video. (Knife+handle is one with enough hallow for the lever, pin, and dropblock.)
Hi Scott, good video. That hydrogel you used to measure the 38 special penetration can actually be melted and reformed to be reused so your chipper never had to meet its maker!

if I had a nickel for every time Scott had a gun explode in his hand, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice. on another note, at least this time it didn't explode quite so violently this time
Don't worry, Scott can always stick that almighty thumb in it if anything goes by the wayside, I mean he's done it once before, pretty sure he can pull it off again if he needed to. As for the knife-gun, I think it'd be more of a gimmicky weapon, you'd use it much like a knife in a fight, then when you've got a good stab in, you finish with the shot. That seems to be the idea behind this design since it did pretty decent job of digging in deep from up close.
That was very interesting. I'm a fan of combination weapons, but that was both more accurate & more lethal than intended. If it hadn't broken it might have been worth replacing a knife in someone's EDC kit after sharpening
Honestly, I would say it was legitimate, if it didn't break. However, that was because it was casted, not forged. Had the blade been forged along with the other simple parts, I think it could've held together better, but something that could contribute is the type of metal used. Hear me out on this, but although it would make it an expensive knife gun, titanium alloy or titanium in general, would make a great metal to withstand the recoil of .38 special, and would help contribute to the tensile strength of the blade, plus making it out of titanium makes it corrosion resistant, so you could have it around for longer periods of time.
Good to see the Chip-O-Matic is well! And at least the gun fired that last round safely. Someone in that situation would probably have other worries at this moment. You could try some more antique (probably blackpowder) version to make up for giving those eggplants the easy way out.😁
For the Knife Gun, believe it's the tip of the blade in proximity distance from the barrel that gives itself more buck packing more fire. That mini bayonet resembles a mod crafted in a video game.
Scott, just when I think there's nothing that could top the last video, you bring something else out. Your videos are absolutely fantastic. Not only educational, but also hilarious. Keep up the great work sir. Stay safe and God bless
Thought(s) on the knife pistol: Interesting concept, it would be interesting to see a company take idea and innovate a modern version with a longer barrel. Also, very glad there were no injuries when it failed.
If one was made, it would have to be magazine fed or have an internal magazine. I could easily see a lever action doing the job if they added a blade to the bottom of the barrel and allotted reinforcements to it so you wouldnt knock any internal parts loose on a swing.
Concept is old. If you go back into the pioneering days of firearm development, there's more than one weird concept of knife pistols, knuckleduster pistols, belt pistols.... the concept isn't a new one.
idea for a weapon: a motorcyrcle with a minigun on the top and blades on the sides. also has googly eyes for added psychological warfare. there a lots of ideas in this world. some of them are good, some of them are bad, and some are groundbreaking. mine was the latter.
I think we need a special 4 million subscriber episode on how exactly you clean up that range after a day like this. lol and anything else behind the scenes! Especially a range tour!
I'll be honest. Watching the slow-mo footage from the very first shot and seeing how much flex and play there was in the metal and joints of that thing made me certain of the outcome you got right from the get go.
This was my favorite episode. I busted out laughing when the blade broke and totally lost it with your reaction. Too funny, glad you did not blow your hand off.

The knife pistol seemslike a legitimate weapon concept, since from your tests, it does look like it would've been a deadly close-quarters wepon with a few improvements to the materials it's made out of, the length of the blade and barrel and to the caliber of bullets it shoots.
@@spcpitts the *concept* is good but the execution just isn’t. so yeah, the design would be almost entirely changed but it would still be a “knife gun”
Its a novelty concept obviously =P But I think it broke because you shot it embedded, I'm not saying that it shouldn't be "rated" for that. But what I think happens is the blade flex's pretty substantially under recoil (you can see it in the slow mo) When you had the blade in the pineapple or gel it had nowhere to go, which put that stress on that metal piece. I don't think they test fired it with the blade embedded that much. Great video as always!
I loved the gunknife, how do I get one? 😁 I think a smaller caliber, with less recoil, extends the durability of the gunknife. Another excellent video. Thanks Scott, have a good week. 👏🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

As described, this dagger gun seems most effective as a melee weapon with the pistol dealing a killing blow if aimed at a vital spot when fired. Since it can only hold one bullet at a time before reloading and since it's a short barrel it's definitely not built to rely on range combat.
😶,.... Same; .... it's my first watch of any of this,.... And I am NOT disappointed 😁
Also can give you a way to more safely approach a threat
I suppose it can also give you a free hit before getting close.
Like, firing a shot off from what seems to be a knife would probably shock and frighten a foe leaving them open.
Although an obvious gun would probably discourage any physical attacker from coming close at all...
@@XenonPrimeSBSV You would either use it the way the video shows (stab and shoot) or if in a duel, use the blade to move the opponent's blade out of the way and then shoot him in the face up close.
Seeing Scott jab the doctor thunder and it spray everywhere at 6:48 , plus the scream, was absolutely perfect. Had me dying because it happened so fast, and so quick, that i didn’t even see it spray the camera.
Came here to say this. The smash cut to Scott gently blowing the knifegun’s barrel clean after obliterating the camera with an impulsive stab was peak Scott.

I've been watching for almost 3 months now and I got to say I've been obsessed! You mix informative with comedy so well. I hope your injuries from that .50 cal don't affect you much, I know that was years ago but still, and can't wait to see more! 😊
Injuries? 😂 jk
@@chrisduitsman2918 I'd say they spurred him on if nothing else. That's just the sorta guy Scott is.

There was a rn50 cal injury 😁…..to the rn not Scott 😉

There was an unfortunate malfunction with the RN 50 and after several agonizing months the rifle is severely broken.
i love the old folder knife/pistols. my local gun store had a few for sale for ages and no one ever bought them. they are typically single shot and some of them also double as "brass knuckles" because of how the grip works. they are also typically extremely poor quality lol
Look up an apache pistol
I remember those! Ugly as hell but cool idea
I can't remember it it's "My Pal" or "My friend" but it's a single finger knuck and a gun. Something I'd love to have in my collection just to own!
Just double checked, it's called My Friend by James Reid.
the mall ninja weapon of firearms.
7:57 you have one of the best maniacal laughters, its wild how it broke
7:55 I'm a couple months late, but that's why you don't mix guns and swords or knives.
Do a Gun with an Axe, you'll get something way more rugged
I wanted to take the time to say thank you for putting all the time and effort and money into these videos even when things don’t go as planned you always find a way to make it better. I hope that you have a good rest of your week and can’t wait for the next video.
Gaxes?
Only if Ian wears his Gun Jesus costume and Scott wears an eggplant costume during the entire video.
there was a lot of stuff like that but most were made as art or a show of craftsmanship. they regularly used because its the worst of both worlds. you are either gunna have a melee weapon with extra weight and bulkiness that fires not very well or a gun with extra weight and bulkiness that you can sometimes hit someone with. the best we ever came up with was bayonets, cuz it was just a spear, the all round best weapon due to how simple it is.
Scott somehow managed to make a super fun and entering video out of a single shot knife/pistols. What a showmen. Big fan of the wood chipper as well.
I just realized why getting your channel logo tattooed on your inner forearm was genius. He will never have to use a watermark for his slowmow footage, its always there so nobody ever has to wonder "who made this?"
Man this was an episode littered with unfortunate failures. From the table breaking after tossing to the knife gun. Scott it’s clear you’re just too strong for these things to handle 😂
Scott testing stuff till it breaks ...not always when he expects it to ! Just trying to get the next line without cracking up was sheer gold 😁
My favorite part of your videos is how happy you always are. You truly love what you do and it shows. Its like hanging out with a hype man who's always got something fun to do. 10/10, wish I could subscribe twice
This to be the funniest most entertaining channel on UA-cam. My kids and I really enjoy watching the antics. Thanks for making it family friendly
The amount of fun this guy has on a regular basis makes us all extremely jealous
nice video scott, about the gunknife, this is miles away from my field, but for an item thats gonna be used for wacking and shooting, that pin its handling too much strain on its own.
Yea it was designed for hunting pigs, not batoning wood
Wtf are you on about? Nobody said anything about batoning wood.
@@frisc0strangler207 Please use it for neither.
I think a lever action for a drop block would maybe last longer than what we see in the video. (Knife+handle is one with enough hallow for the lever, pin, and dropblock.)
oh really what makes you say that?
The table throwing is now one of my favorite thing i love to see in Sott's videos, it always make me bust a laugh!!
First time here, and I am thoroughly convinced this guy has harnessed the soul (and voice) of Chris Farley.
Hi Scott, good video.
That hydrogel you used to measure the 38 special penetration can actually be melted and reformed to be reused so your chipper never had to meet its maker!

if I had a nickel for every time Scott had a gun explode in his hand, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
on another note, at least this time it didn't explode quite so violently this time
This is a text for a next T-shirt 😂
You forgot about the nitro express 500 pistol
I'm pretty sure this is a Phineas and Ferb quote
Don't worry, Scott can always stick that almighty thumb in it if anything goes by the wayside, I mean he's done it once before, pretty sure he can pull it off again if he needed to.
As for the knife-gun, I think it'd be more of a gimmicky weapon, you'd use it much like a knife in a fight, then when you've got a good stab in, you finish with the shot. That seems to be the idea behind this design since it did pretty decent job of digging in deep from up close.
Wouldn’t really say it exploded
Not only seeing scott wrecking havoc and having fun doing it. Your videos are funny because the intros and awesome for the videos

That was very interesting. I'm a fan of combination weapons, but that was both more accurate & more lethal than intended. If it hadn't broken it might have been worth replacing a knife in someone's EDC kit after sharpening
Agreed. I would have considered getting one had it not self destructed.
Oh man when that blade broke off I died laughing in anticipation of his reaction which did not disappoint.
@@goatgunner8693 there's a reason you don't see many titanium knives, kid.

Good to see the Chip-O-Matic is well!
And at least the gun fired that last round safely. Someone in that situation would probably have other worries at this moment.
You could try some more antique (probably blackpowder) version to make up for giving those eggplants the easy way out.😁
Eggplant shot at point blank with a blunderbuss would be pretty epic.
@@mcwilliams4546 I would go with the eggplant puree can vs the blunderbuss... or perhaps a small cannon, like Brandon Herrera has.
@@mar71n32n0v1lLL0 a couple solid options as well
For the Knife Gun, believe it's the tip of the blade in proximity distance from the barrel that gives itself more buck packing more fire. That mini bayonet resembles a mod crafted in a video game.
Scott, just when I think there's nothing that could top the last video, you bring something else out. Your videos are absolutely fantastic. Not only educational, but also hilarious. Keep up the great work sir. Stay safe and God bless
Scott single handedly keeping the the folding table industry booming, everybody knows the rules!
5:24 Scott definitely regret laughing after he jammed that grinder knowing how strong that gel is. lol
Thought(s) on the knife pistol:
Interesting concept, it would be interesting to see a company take idea and innovate a modern version with a longer barrel.
@@Confused_Master So like.....a rifle with a bayonette you mean?
Concept is old. If you go back into the pioneering days of firearm development, there's more than one weird concept of knife pistols, knuckleduster pistols, belt pistols.... the concept isn't a new one.

I like all of the extra messy/weird/destructive/surprise/funny stuff you do. Keep it up!
The knife pistol seemslike a legitimate weapon concept, since from your tests, it does look like it would've been a deadly close-quarters wepon with a few improvements to the materials it's made out of, the length of the blade and barrel and to the caliber of bullets it shoots.
So it would be good if it was.....completely different?
@@spcpitts the *concept* is good but the execution just isn’t. so yeah, the design would be almost entirely changed but it would still be a “knife gun”

never a dull moment on this channel, love the content guys
Its a novelty concept obviously =P But I think it broke because you shot it embedded, I'm not saying that it shouldn't be "rated" for that. But what I think happens is the blade flex's pretty substantially under recoil (you can see it in the slow mo) When you had the blade in the pineapple or gel it had nowhere to go, which put that stress on that metal piece. I don't think they test fired it with the blade embedded that much. Great video as always!
Scott, your reaction when the blade broke was epic! I haven't laughed that hard in a while! My chest hurts from coughing while laughing!🙃

How do we get nice things? We make'em. I have my own notion of the knife pistol, more like the Elgin "cutlass pistol, that is black powder percussion with a good tempered carbon steel blade. Can do, is in the drawing and collecting parts stage as yet.
