    Hi buddy hope your well.
    Yes i feel guilty for trading the roselli to alex didnt know it was going to crack so easy.
    Yes alex from easy going outdoors is superb he definitely knows wot makes a good blade & knows his stuff.
    & his tracker knife designs with orgin knives are amazing.
    Anyway if you got the picture i sent you of the roselli blank its very weird in design.
    I would not have made one with a round bar 2/3rds along the tang as that to me is a major weak spot.
    Most leukus as you know tend to be rectangle in shape along the tang the tapered nicely towards the end to pin it in place.
    But roselli doesnt do this he instead rounds off nearly half the tang in the handle which is going to cause major vibrations in the handle like a tuning fork hence why cracks appear on the handle under heavy use.
    & that handle is way too big & like i said before the reason i think he did that was to try & limit the vibrations in the handle & to hide the fact thst it was a major problem
    The design of the tang would make handle fitting alot faster as its mostly round bar stock towards the end.
    But its flawed in that it takes away alot of strength & encourages more vibrations in the handle which in time will cause the handle to crack.
    I think if you was to sand the handle thinner it woukd make the handle alot worse & vibrate even more.
    Great review bud keep it up 😊 😊

      That all makes a lot more sense now. I did get your picture. A rectangle shape is obviously stronger, it didn't occur to me that it could affect the vibrations. I kind of blamed that on the shape of the handle. Guess I was wrong, it does make more sense
      Thanks for watching Lee

    Think I would add a big moose antler knob on the end of the handle to make it easier to control while chopping. Roselli blades makes great big game tools for processing the critter into meat. I like a thinner, lighter Leuku for general camp use. Like a big knob on the ent to keep it secure in the hand while in use & easier to pull from sheath while wearing thick gloves or mittens.

    Great honest review as always mate! I’m a big believer in that any tool should be used within its design capabilities and we only usually have problems when we abuse or use tools that aren’t suitable for the task, so whilst it’s fun to put tools through their paces it is not always a true reflection of its capabilities and performance. Thanks buddy, I should take up reindeer herding rather than dog sledding to use it properly though 😂. I actually think something we all use tools like this for up here is clearing birch from the tracks in front of the snowmobiles. The snow weight brings then down. Maybe I should have mentioned that in at least one of my leuku videos. To be honest I use the Terava Skrama more than any leuku. Hang on didn't you break one of those too? Was it a stainless one. Great video, Tim. I’ve always admired the Roselli’s thick forged blade but haven’t considered the issue with the pommel-less handle for chopping. I’ve got a Purnovarsi bladed leukku with a 20 cm forged blade, but it suffers from a similar handle issue. My Erapuu with a thinner Laurin Metalli blade and a traditional pommeled handle feels much better. That said, like you, I use my Terava Skrama more…

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  Місяць тому

      The Skrama is just such a versatile tool. I feel kind of ashamed to use it instead of a leuku being here in Lapland. Seems wrong not to use a leuku so much. I think the cheaper Laurin metalli bladed leukus are really hard to beat (like the Eräpuu). I certainly prefer them over Stromeng. I have a bigger puronvarsi leuku, but it's too heavy. Also too pretty and expensive to really treat it as a tool😂.

    A lot of those "full tang" bushcraft knives are actually skeletonised, aka shit-tang.
    I like your take on the relative strength of the stick tang. They can be very strong indeed. It depends on how it's done. The ones with right angles are surely more problematic.
    Also interesting to hear that the older leuku knives tend to be thinner. I was just wondering about that consideration a minute before you mentioned that.
    I've been forging a blade in 52100 that might prove to be a good starting point for a leuku type of thing. My starting idea was a small machete type blade - but machetes are almost defined by being made from thin, soft, cheap steel. So a forged machete in 52100 is either stepping into long knife or short sword territory.
    The old leuku, with thin stock and a good handle for chopping, seems to bridge the gap between knife and machete quite neatly.
    Another notion I had was to make a competition chopper knife. Perhaps I can make a competition chopper leuku with robust stick tang!
    Your knife is about ready now.

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  Місяць тому

      Right angles on stick tangs are potential fracture points. The shoulders should be rounded, even if it does make it harder to fit a bolster. As for skelitonised tangs, I have seen some that look bloody dangerous. If you are battoning and the top of the tang breaks from the downward force on the blade, it's going to go straight into your hand.
      Look forward to putting the knife to the test.

      @dongkhamet1351 Місяць тому

      @@KuukkeliBushcraftAgreed re. stick tang. I hadn't considered the potential dangers of a fractured skeleton tang asides from knife incapacitation. I'm getting nasty mental images of a hand with a half skeleton tang nailed through, as seen by the light of a remote woods late night camp fire.

    The Leuku should be one fo the worlds great general purchase large outdoor blades except...the handle shape has always been bloody ridiculous.
    I was just up in Lapland and there are handmade Leuku for sale in every shop and from every garage, I handled about 50 different Leukus in the last few days but the handle shape was just so wrong for the human hand on all of them. I feel Mora knives made a huge error when they made the Pathfinder knife (I love mine by the way) when that they got an American to design a big knife for them (it never won any acclaim either in Europe or in America as it's alien in both markets) instead of trying to give the Mora treatment (strong, functional and cheap) to the traditional Leuku (imagine the Garberg blade inlarged with the rubberized handle of a 2000 or a Kansbol if you can).
