Man after you finish the led zeppelin journey YOU HAVE TO listen to jeff buckley only album, “grace” because he was like one of the biggest fan on them (his first vinyl was a led zepp. Album and moment before his death he was singing a led zepp. Song) and it shows, it’s a really great album
i’ve listened to every album Darius has reviewed more than 100 times, but I still watch all 40 minutes of all his videos because I love watching people listen to these masterpieces for the first time. I would give everything to go back in time and listen to these albums for the first time again
I was pleasantly surprised to see you NOT bash The Crunge, it's infamous as one of Zep's "worst songs" but I have always loved it. The song is inspired by James Brown, especially that ending "Has anybody seen the bridge?" part.
Amen to that and was glad to read that post. I always read and hear that about 'The Crunge' and always wonder what they're talking about. It may be a song that just kind of popped up when they were jamming but so what ? It's funky as hell ! It takes us to the bridge !
They knew James Brown & admired him, Page knew him better, I like the Crunge. There’s only 2 songs I don’t care for, Hats Off To Roy Harper, & Candy Store. Not caring for 2 songs out of all their songs, that says so much about this amazing band.
The holy trinity of Great Britain: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, all releasing amazing music at the same time. 65-75 might be the peak of music. There was also another pretty good band from overseas in 4th place, the Stones. Great reaction, as always.
A little bit of context behind the song "No Quarter"- No quarter is an old military term meaning no mercy. If a commanding officer gave that order you showed no mercy to the enemy. The lyrics of the song are about viking warriors traveling throughout Scandinavia in dangerous (snowy) conditions. Norse mythology was a huge influence on the bands lyrics. There's a joke that every Led Zeppelin song is about vikings, sex, or citrus.
Talk about a diverse musical experience. Interestingly the Beatles were my favorite group growing up, at least until I was introduced to Led Zeppelin as a 14 year old.
The orchestral sounds in "The Rain Song" is JPJ on the Mellotron; that song is so beautiful. In "The Ocean" Robert is referring to his 3-year-old daughter.
Which became "four" in the live version a year after the album was released, lol. Then again, the COVER of this album is kinda like "WTF?..." The 1970's were a different time, LOL.
The Rain Song, to me, holds up as one of their greatest things. It's a masterpiece. Probably my favorite Led song and I seem to like it more and more over time. Edit...If Robert Plant had heard what you just said, that he sounded black, he probably would've wanted to kiss you. That would've been the highest compliment possible.
If you liked No Quarter you're going to love Pink Floyd. That song always reminds me of Echoes off of Pink Floyd's Meddle a couple years earlier, probably my favorite album of theirs along with Animals and Dark Side of the Moon. But most of their albums are amazing. Just like with Led Zep and The Beatles
Houses of the Holy is the album on which Led Zeppelin defined itself apart from the heavy blues influences on their earlier albums. And that sound lasted throughout the seventies and beyond. "The Song Remains the Same", "The Ocean", "Dancing Days", "Over the Hills and Far Away", "D'yer Mak'er" -- Heavy rotation on FM rock radio stations for decades. I remember playing around with skateboards and listening to the radio on the boom box and hearing "The Song Remains the Same" coming over the airwaves followed by "Dancing Days" or some other on a "two for tuesday" or somesuch. That was over forty years ago. "The Rain Song" is really great to listen to when its raining. Seriously good. And "No Quarter" -- check out the live version from MSG from the soundtrack album to the Led Zeppelin concert film The Song Remains The Same. That is a real treat. Seriously. Jimmy Page tears it up. "The Crunge" is James Brown funk with a name drop of the song "Mr. Pitiful" written by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper in 1965. "D'yer Mak'er" -- we called it "Dire Maker" but the phrase is the verbal compaction of "Did you make her?" in such a way that it sounds like Jamaica.
Prince definitely liked and admired Zeppelin. Not surprisingly, he valued them for being musically adventurous and trying (and nailing!) new styles, as of course he himself did. He played "Whole Lotta Love" at least 50 times in concert.(Tina Turner's got a badass cover of it as well). I think he saw Bonham as their MVP. Robert Plant is a gigantic Prince fan, once calling him basically the most impressive guy in the world, and said he was one of the very few musicians he might have been intimidated by if they had ever worked together, lol.
You are correct, "only 3 years old" is referring to his daughter. When playing live, he'd change it to her current age ("only 4 years old...." etc). But, the look on your face. LOL
I am so happy new generations can enjoy them. I saw them live in 75 and that was my day and my time....I just cry thinking about this.....best time of my life.
I think if you have time & would like to, you could now watch their movie, The Song Remains The Same. Their live performances are really amazing, & the movie is from their Madison Square Gardens 3 concerts in (1973). I know you could buy rent or watch free with short ads, I’m not sure it’s still available on UA-cam, check & see. Each genius is the GOAT of their crafts, together they are The GODS Of MUSIC, you can’t say of rock because they do everything. You need to watch Bonham’s 20 minute live solo Moby Dick, it’s amazing to watch & hear.
I'm not just here for The music Man, I'm here for you cuz you are just so real. I'm sure you will find out as you continue this journey that you will have a favorite album from led Zeppelin for different things therefore all of their albums will wind up being a favorite. Also, I got to say your editing is top-notch.
You wanna go on a journey? A musical journey? Listen to Rush. From beginning (1974) to end (2012). Musicianship, vocals, lyrics. They got everything, and more. They didn't sell as much as The Beatles or Led Zep. But the passion of their fans remains unmatched. That's what made them what they are (and will always be) A Family. A Community.
That reaction was awesome!!! I've been waiting a long time to see it, and you didn't disappoint! Next up, my favorite Zeppelin album (and tied for my favorite album of all time, alongside the Beatles White Album), PHYSICAL GRAFFITI! Can't Wait!!!! Peace
"The Crunge" started as a jam session. Them just fukkin around. Bonham began the beat, then JPJ came in on bass, and Jimmy picked up on it with his funky guitar part, and Robert just started ad-libbing. This is roughly true, at least, others may have greater details. But Bonham and Plant (and likely the other two) loved James Brown, whose style, as you noticed, this song pays homage to. JPJ and Bonham were also enormous fans of Motown, I think Bonzo had a jukebox at home filled with nothing but Motown and James Brown!
I know he did have a jukebox at home, friends from different bands would come over & they’d party. Plant talks about them getting together like that, Bonham would have Jason play the drums for them. Jason said, he thought it was normal having rock stars come to his house, John sometimes woke him to play for friends. John was so proud of him.
@@sicotshit7068 Very cool to know! Bonham was of course also very proud of his band. I recall a "Get the Led out" segment talking about how he and Carmine Apiece (sp?) from V. Fudge stayed up late into the night as Bonham played and raved about an advance copy of the Fourth album for his fellow drummer! Or it might have been Simon Kirk of then Free and soon to be Bad Co. But u get the picture!
@@joescott8877 yes it was a band he could really play, & not get kicked out of for being to loud LOL. It was a band they all had every reason to be proud, they all got to do their best work, & thankfully we benefited.
@@sicotshit7068 Agreed. Whenever I see Bonzo smiling while he's playing Achilles, Kashmir, etc at Knebworth, I like to think he was just so happy to be in a band that is worthy of him. That or really good heroin, lol. But seriously, the thing about Zeppelin is that EACH member could justifiably have such a thought.
@@joescott8877 I had heard In Though The Outdoor was a direction Bonham & Page didn’t really want to go, they wanted more the rock blues, then 80’s type music. That album was more Plant & JPJ, you can tell more of a difference, I like a few songs on it but it’s not a killer like the others. Bonham is a drummer, you know he’s in the band, many are more in the background but not Bonham. I love each of them so much, love all the interviews, & watching live performances.
Hell yeah… was really hoping you would give this a shot. I confess, I did not really love this album the first time. Took a few listens for its brilliance to resonate. The Rain Song and No Quarter are eternal!
Song remains the song was never a song I cared for but could tolerate … “over the hills and far away “ was the rock song I discovered in my early 20’s and proceeded to not listen to hip hop much but have a 2 yr zeppelin phase which led me into a lifetime of being a huge Beatles fan
I’d like to see a reaction to the song “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. Also the album Band on the Run by Wings and a more modern album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel.
I would highly recommend listening to the Song Remains The Same movie soundtrack at this point before moving onwards. The black double album, just to go deeper into how they sounded live during this time in 1973. That was my first LZ album before any of the studio albums. Could they replicate that stuff live?! Yes they did! Physical Graffiti will blow your mind away. It’s very eclectic, like Houses of the Holy was but with elements of blues added back in. It’s my favorite of theirs, and that’s saying a lot because I love all of their albums. I’m a drummer and Bonham was and is my compass on drum kit. Keep up the great work!
I can't wait until you get to "Physical Graffiti". It's been my favorite LZ album for nearly 50 years and I will continue to return to it on a regular basis as long as I live. LED ZEPPELIN LIVES
You should definitely listen to that Buffalo Springfield song that started playing after The Ocean! “For What It’s Worth” - a classic iconic song of the 60s. Loving your reactions!
D’yer Mak’er is pronounced “Jamaica” its a play on the Jamaican influence on the song and also a reference to an old British joke where two friends are talking: 1: My wife’s gone to the West Indies? 2: Jamaica? (Sounds like “did you make her?” in a British accent) 1: no she wanted to go
The Rain Song is my favourite song, not just from Zeppelin. It is beautiful, majestic and profound, it is everything I love about a musical experience ❤
When Dyer myker came on i got the goofest smile on my face, And yes, it is “led Zepps reggae song” I can’t wait for you to hear the next one, PG is the peak, honestly the peak, they are the greatest innovators in guitar music of all fucking time
The story is that George Harrison told Bonham that Zep did not have enough ballads. "The Rain Song" came out of that...borrowing from the "Something" intro...
Yes George went to one of their concerts, afterwards talking to Bonham backstage, said their problem was no ballads. I believe Bonham told Jimmy, & Jimmy said hold my beer. A beautiful ballad about the phases of a relationship, & one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Love Led Zeppelin - One of my Fav Albums! Robert Plant was also Great on his own after Zeppelin! Check out Robert Plant ..... - Tall Cool One - Ship of Fools - Heaven Knows - 29 Palms - Big Log - Sea of Love
35:18 this instrument is rather an effect pedal, called a phaser. Most phasers, like the Phase 90, have a single knob that controls the rate of speed/depth. John Paul Jones is playing a Fender Rhodes electric piano with a phaser set to very high, thus giving it that fast, wobbly-throbby sound.
It's funny you mentioned if they shrank Robert Plant! No, but they sped up his vocals a little which is why he sounds a little bit chipmonk-y! P.S. yeah I've had the Beatles vs. Zep thing for decades myself! And yes there's been a zillion imitations of both bands.
Jimmy’s production is a huge star in all of their albums. Good ears man’s. Cheers I love your reactions and taste. The Zeppelin catalog was my drum and guitar lessons. All the records. I worshipped Zeppelin in the mid 80’s.
Houses of the Holy is easily my favorite Zep album. They are more refined and wildly versatile. We hear them reaching and expanding into other genres more than any other album. String arrangements, jazz and folk influences, a wink to James Brown funk with The Crunge, and most surprising is D yer Maker, Zeppelin tributes the Island reggae sound almost a decade before anyone else dared. I adore this album, they were really a progressive rock group that fooled us into thinking they were just roots rock, Lol...
This album is one of Led Zeppelin's masterpieces, along with Physical Graffiti and Presence in my opinion. I love the other albums, but these three are untouchable.
Presence side one can probably be a stand alone album! Side 2 had weak tracks, and a failed attempt at remaking the magic of Since Ive Been Loving You, still love that album tho!😊
(Dude, u just became my 4th Patreon join in six months--I need me some full Darius reactions, lol!) Actually, Physical Graffiti is their greatest album, lol! I think so, anyhow, tho it's kind of cheating, bein a double and all. BUT: The 1st album has some of the bone-crunchingest, ass-kickingest, coolest rock music ever offered human ears, and the 2nd album is kind of another "Houses," featuring some "weird," "not standard Zeppelin" (stereotypically speaking), but much of it is brilliant, and shows their amazing range and creativity.
@@lifeofdariius Right on. I'm already resenting joining, not really, but what with your apparently more productive output we got coming up, lol. Too much to keep up with, ha! But I can lean on/crutch it with the YT abbreviated versions, and delve deeper with Patreon when occasion demands it, lol. Gonna be a great journey for all!

Love Led Zeppelin - One of my Fav Albums!
Robert Plant was also Great on his own after Zeppelin! Check out Robert Plant ..... - Tall Cool One - Ship of Fools - Heaven Knows - 29 Palms - Big Log - Sea of Love
The ‘ocean’ was the audience, the crowd.
Get the Led out Yieeeeee Haaaaaaa! Ridem Cowboy! 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Darlin 'Darlin' Darlin' ,lol dude that is Robert doing an Irish impression ..
Id love to see you react to some Jimi Hendrix, maybe Are You Experienced
It's funny you mentioned if they shrank Robert Plant! No, but they sped up his vocals a little which is why he sounds a little bit chipmonk-y! P.S. yeah I've had the Beatles vs. Zep thing for decades myself! And yes there's been a zillion imitations of both bands.
Zeppelin is a super group. Super heroes of rock!
Jimmy’s production is a huge star in all of their albums. Good ears man’s. Cheers I love your reactions and taste. The Zeppelin catalog was my drum and guitar lessons. All the records. I worshipped Zeppelin in the mid 80’s.
"The Crunge" was a shout out to James Brown and the lyric take me to the bridge. Also, there's no bridge in this song.
Yep a tribute to James Brown!
“Where’s that confounded bridge?!”
I distinctly remember the 1st time I heard this on the radio, on my way to Newport Beach with my best friend. Just made the whole day better. ❤😊
The Crudge was there attempt or tribute to James Brown.
Yes,,,we love the music,,,,,,but seeing the younger generations enjoy it also,,,is icing on the cake. 💥💥💥👍😎 LZ = GOAT'S
It's Robert's daughter. When she used to here her daddy's voice on the radio, she used to jump up and down dancing to the music.
Do yourself a favor and listen to the MSG 1973 live set and the 1972 HTWWW live album
When you go to listen to Dark Side, keep in mind the songs flow into each other, might be a bit jarring stopping in between most of them
This has always been my favorite Zep album. With 2 being my second favorite. I think this was the peak, but Physical Graffiti is also fantastic.
Having a hard time not checking 4 and coming back to this one, sounds like you had a good time lol.
I gotta blow it up for this one 😂
Houses of the Holy is easily my favorite Zep album. They are more refined and wildly versatile. We hear them reaching and expanding into other genres more than any other album. String arrangements, jazz and folk influences, a wink to James Brown funk with The Crunge,
and most surprising is D yer Maker, Zeppelin tributes the Island reggae sound almost a decade before anyone else dared. I adore this album, they were really a progressive rock group that fooled us into thinking they were just roots rock, Lol...
Your reaction to the rain song said it all 🔥🔥🔥
This album has always been one of my top soundtrack choices for a "space cruise" type road trip, if your pickin' up what I'm puttin' down. :P
The Rain Song was inspired by Something by George and the Beatles
❤❤❤...and yes the next Double Album , yes Double Album, " Physical Graffiti" ..is the best...LOL..GREAT REACTION MY FRIEND!
This album is one of Led Zeppelin's masterpieces, along with Physical Graffiti and Presence in my opinion. I love the other albums, but these three are untouchable.
Presence side one can probably be a stand alone album! Side 2 had weak tracks, and a failed attempt at remaking the magic of Since Ive Been Loving You, still love that album tho!😊
when the levee breaks... goat 4 moi
Rain Song maybe the greatest ever written...
(Dude, u just became my 4th Patreon join in six months--I need me some full Darius reactions, lol!) Actually, Physical Graffiti is their greatest album, lol! I think so, anyhow, tho it's kind of cheating, bein a double and all. BUT: The 1st album has some of the bone-crunchingest, ass-kickingest, coolest rock music ever offered human ears, and the 2nd album is kind of another "Houses," featuring some "weird," "not standard Zeppelin" (stereotypically speaking), but much of it is brilliant, and shows their amazing range and creativity.
i can't fathom how it goes up from here, but i'm so excited 😂 welcome to the Patreon as well!
Are you still thinking about reacting to a video on the creation of ‘Pet Sounds’. I’d like to see what you think about it. Loving this reaction by the way!
yes! probably gonna drop along with Smile Session
Not a big fan of Roberts voice but I do like Led and he comes with it. So I’m happy 😊
OMG YAY **MyBelovedOtherWorldlyLedZeppelin** & course **MyBeautifulJimmyPageMagicalGeniusWizardBabe** They are such an amazing incredible magical **Gift** to this crazy planet & YAY **Luv** that YOU used the word **Wizards** heh YAY **Luvit** **PixieHugz&LuvzALL**
Looking forward to this.
Zep didn't make a bad album but IX just might be my fav.
Haven't heard this in awhile so this will refresh me..
Much love..
God bless! 🕊️
Page took the blues and turned it into hard rock and blended psychedelic into it. I'm hoping you'll explore the Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix
The weird instrument in No Quarter seems like a Rhodes or other electric piano with some kind of tremolo effect.
Crunge would have been a great Rod Stewart song
Robert does it very well
WOOOOOO ive been waiting for this one!!! cant wait to see your reaction to physical graffiti, in my opinion, led zeppelin’s best album 🫶
Funny how so many ppl have a different Fave Zep album. Shows how evenly distributed their brilliance was. How consistent they were. But ur right PH is in fact the best, lol!
@@joescott8877 absolutely!
@@m.lillith Yup! And I just noticed my typo of "PH" instead of "PG" lmao!
Well how bout this then: The PH content ("Perfectly Heavy" ) of Physical Graffiti is very high, especially on Sides 1&2 ! 🤣
