  • Hi folks,
I hope you’re having a great day so far! Welcome back to what’s for tea, and I hope I find you all well!
Today I made this easy & delicious split pea & ham soup :) I made mine in the slow cooker but you can easily make this on the stove top instead…it will take about 3-4 hours on the stove top, just make sure your ham is fall apart tender :)
I’ve listed everything I used below…in case you want to give them a go for yourself.
Thanks for stopping by and until I see you next, take care x
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________
Preheat your slow cooker to High (cook for 5-6 hours) or low (8-10 hours)
    I Used-
Around 1kg Smoked ham hock (ham hough) or ham shank or similar bone in smoked ham joint
300g or 10oz Dried split peas (green on yellow) rinsed
1 Medium onion - finely diced
    2 Medium carrots - diced
2 Ribs celery - finely diced
    1 Medium potato - peeled & diced
2.5 pints or 6 cups chicken stock (I just used Knorks stock cubes)
    Salt & pepper to taste
**Crusty bread or croutons to serve**

My recipe exactly. I boiled the peas for about 5 minutes before removing them to the slow cooker and added only 1/2 tsp of thyme, 1/2 black pepper and a pinch of salt.❤️

I lived on baxters and heinz versions of these soups as a kid growing up in camelon ( next to falkirk)
Fast forward a few decades and being confronted by the possilpatk mafia on new years day a few miles north of San Francisco......no pressure 😱
This was absolutely stellar, even better than the childhood memories of this soup. We can’t thank you enough for taking the time to post this recipie. If anyone in even remotely considering trying this recipie, please go for it, this is absolutely delicious!!!!!!

We are the same way about soup on a hot day. We are in central Texas in 103-ish weather right now but we get in the mood for soup ANY TIME OF THE YEAR. We keep our home at 69 degrees so it's always on the cool side INSIDE OUR HOUSE!!😂😂😂 Thanks for this great video. I am trying all the Scottish recipes that I can and having fun with it. Of course I don't think I will ever get to taste Haggis but I would sure love to. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful recipes with us!!

Hi from Melbourne Australia, I have just put the lid on my slow cooker as I’m making your recipe. We are in the heart of winter and weather is 3C-13C atm which is very cold for us. I sealed all my veggies first in a drop of oil so each veggie tastes like it should, eg carrots taste like carrots etc. I did add a parsnip as I had one to use up. Thank you so much for your recipe and also all your posts which I always enjoy.
Perhaps try a Gazpacho soup to match your summer weather.

My all-time favorite soup growing up. Love this and will be making it tomorrow after emptying the slow cooker of the pork roast I did. With the cooler months the house gets to smell soooo good due to the variety of soups/stews along with the occasional baked goodies. Looking forward to your Iced Gingerbread (another favorite), and hope to make the Apple Crumble soon, too. The seasonal spices are so inviting. Anyway Cheryl, Have yourself a Wonderful week. *LK*

Looks very good, sometimes I do a 'cheats' version of pea & ham soup, if I haven't got split peas I use 2 cans of Batchelors Mushy Pea's instead, and boiled ham ripped into shreds in place of the ham hock or shank, when the shops are shut it's not a bad substitute!
Oh, I made your scotch broth and that's great too, the wife loved it.
Like you I love soup, in fact my friends call me 'the soup dragon'!
As a side note I used to love Heinz Tomato soup, but I don't know if it's me or what but it tastes so BLAND now, if I'm going to have a tin of soup, I prefer those condensed ones (used to be Campbell's but might be Batchelor's now) that way I can substitute stock instead of the water.
    Regards
    Chris

My sear and cook stock pot doesn't bubble like this on high. Might explain why veg takes some doing to soften.
However, I've already slow cooked a small unsmoked gammon on high for 5 hours and a burst in the airfryer to brown.
I've added more stock with a low salt chicken stock and a ham stock along with the suggested ingredients.
I'll add my ham to it in another few hours and see how the soup comes out.
    Thx for the recipe.

I don't know if you can get or have anything that resembles Fiesta style Hidden Valley Ranch dry packets. This seasoning makes it a little spicy and flavorful. I'm sorry I forgot.
