  • One of my absolute favourite soups, pea and ham is so easy to make!
It's so easy to make and is a meal in a bowl that is great for you too!
This soup is suitable for freezing too.
    Ingredients:
    1 ham / bacon hock between 700g to 1kg / 1.5 to 2lb
1 packet of split peas (approx 500 grams worth / 1 pound)
    1 onion
    2 celery
    2 carrots
    2 cloves garlic
    1 bay leaf
2 litres / 8 cups of water, I used half chicken stock half water
*Don't add any salt as the ham will make it salty enough

Thanks for the tips! I've just bought a slow cooker so I'm experimenting with it at the moment. Leftover gammon is gonna be the star of the show today.
I think I might add less split peas and maybe add some frozen fresh peas right at the end...not sure if it'll work but I thought it might make it look a brighter green? I find that bright colours make me want to eat a bit more (still no sense of smell after Covid - I can taste salt at least, partly why I like ham and pea soup).

      @5610winston 9 місяців тому

Frozen fresh peas at the end, genius, but don't skimp on the split peas.
Fresh color, maybe add some thyme and rosemary, leave the carrots sort of chunky for that bright pop pf color, as well.
Another good addition might be some fresh-ground black and white pepper, maybe some red pepper flakes.
This is a treat for yourself and your family, make it great!

Greggo, there is no telling how many 10s of gallons I've made of this pea and ham soup over the last 40 some odd years, it's the best. My vegetarian daughter still wants me to make it for her. I use water leave out the ham, then add a little liquid smoke and a pinch of thyme. Fairly close and vegan too. Love the videos, keep up the good work!

This is very similar to the classic swedish peasoup (Which have been a culinary thursday tradition since the end of the viking age). The swedes (And finns) use yellow peas though, and they also add majoram. Yours looks great too, and I´d happily slurp down a few liters of your concoction!
Every thursday you will find this on the lunch menu on most restaurants, hospitals and institutions. The swedish military would probably mutiny if they didn´t get this every Thursday, followed by the obligatory swedish pancakes with jam. The only downside to this dish is that it makes me fart like an elephant. :)

Hi Greg Got a recipe for you.
    INGREDIENTS: 300 grams Penne pasta
    4 Slices of bacon
    A whole onion
    500 grams mince meat
Salt, pepper and onion powder to taste
    200-300 grams Tomato sauce/soup
    300-400 grams Grated cheese
Start by cooking Penne pasta until its almost done then set it aside. Fry 4 slices of bacon until they are crispy then set them aside as well. Pour the bacon grease in to the pot and get a whole onion chop it up as well as some mince meat (lean is not recommended) and chuck it in the pot, fry the onions with the meat until they are caramelized and the meat is cooked. Chop the 4 bacon pieces in to bits, then put the bacon and pasta in with the onion and meat. Get tomato sauce or soup in a can and pour it in, fill the can with water twice and pour that in as well. Let all ingredients cook together on a simmer, then add the grated cheese, combine it with all the ingredients then proceed to spread out the remaining cheese on top and put the lid on. 2-3 Minutes should go and it's done.
