I made this soup! I simmered the hock for 4 hours on the stove. Removed the hock and stripped it down. Fried the garlic, onion and carrots in the same pot on the stove. I then strained the stock into the slow cooker. Once the fried veggies were done I also put them in the slow cooker, along with the split pea and cooked ham. Added white pepper and herbs. Left it to slow cook for 8 hours over night and woke up to the smell of fresh pea and ham soup on a cold Autumn window in Western 🇦🇺 🥰🥰🥰 DELICIOUS!! Thank you Sheryl 🥰
I just bought a beautiful large ham hock from a specialty butcher and have some yellow split peas, I’ll start the stock this morning! I’m going to add neeps because I found two small ones at the market, orange sized.
Oooh one of my favourites. With a chunk of buttered bread or plain scones to dip into it. I could taste it though the screen & it was making my mouth water. 🤤 I was going to make mushroom soup this weekend but I'm thinking a huge pot of split pea & ham bone to see me through the week would be better. Thank you Cheryl. [Nice to see someone else still using a proper soup spoon too rather than a dessert soon!] ATB, James.
I´m a bit late to the party, but I like the looks of this recipe and I´m using what´s left of my Christmas ham and bone to make this today! Simple ingredients and simple recipe; I´m here for it, and Cheryl hasn´t let me down yet! ❤
Well, I just brought home red lentils and I will be making soup real soon. Thanks! BTW, I just love to hear you speak, so for me you can ramble on all you want.
this is absolutely my favorite soup to make. It is quite customizable. I always add tons of extra veggies. No one else in my household likes it so I experiment with what I add. Also I make the largest amount possible with the ingredients I have because it freezes quite well. I always thank myself later when I can have a serving of this delicious soup for dinner another day!
Cheryl, love your posts. Brings back memories of my Scottish mothers cooking. Especially the soups. I remember her putting the long ribs from the bacon into the soup and when it was cooked piling the ribs on a plate for us children to eat the bacon off them. She used to make a peas and barley soup using those hard green peas she soaked overnight. Anyone have that receipt. I would be very grateful.
One of my favourite soups that i like to make with a chunk of ham, or a ham bone. Very similar except for chopped celery & seasonings... i use salt & pepper, 4 bay leaves & parsley. I love the bay leaf flavour so much, lots of bay. And either yellow or green split peas.
I made your split pea soup recipe tonight. Turned out perfect! My husband loved it so much he ate 2 big bowls of it. I agree, white pepper is better than black in this recipe!! 😋😊
Greetings from Alaska! I just made a close version of this wonderful split pea and ham soup, without the white pepper. I can see many comments raving about it, so I will have to see where I can find some. Thank you Cheryl :)
I've not seen a split pea soup recipe before. It looks yummy! We (my family) usually have a canned version (horrors, lol). I just may have to try this recipe. Thanks Cheryl :)
Looks lovely! If I may, I found through trial and error, if you add a diced parsnip it really improves the flavor. There used to be a product called Soup Starter in the States, and split pea was the bomb! After trying to replicate it many times, the parsnip flavor was the key. Thanks for sharing. 😘
That was interesting. We make an nearly identical soup (ärtsoppa for those that want to google it) here in Sweden and residues of that soup have been found on Bronze Age pottery. I wonder if that is yet another dish the Vikings brought over to your shores?
I made this soup!

DELICIOUS!!
Thank you Sheryl 🥰
Thank you for sharing this recipe, my mom used to make this when I was a girl (I am 71now). It was always lovely.

You too! :)

made this today was a big hit with my family and will be making it again
Ham hocks here, almost always appear in the shops ‘smoked.’ They are delicious and add a lot of flavor to soups!🙋♀️🇺🇸🤗🥰
Looked delicious; definitely going to be making this soup 👍😊
Looks great. I’ll be making it for my Scottish themed dinner party! I grew up on the same recipe
Great comfort food, one of my favorite soups
We love Split Pea w Ham soup. I no longer eat pork so I use smoked turkey leg or wing. TY for your recipe. Love ya.

The Mrs and I make this all the time, a good winter time soup. 👍🎅🏻
Great recipe!

Beautiful place
Absolutely gorgeous! Just like my great auntie Grace, from Sterling, used to make! I can taste it through the screen!
Well, I just brought home red lentils and I will be making soup real soon. Thanks! BTW, I just love to hear you speak, so for me you can ramble on all you want.
My mom used to make this from time to time, but I never have. Perhaps I should. Thanks, Cheryl!
I enjoy split pea soup.
Ohhh aye ,defo a favourite, thanks Cheryl 😊 👍🏻
I have been looking for a good hambone pea soup! Thanks for this, I'll have to make it soon! Hambone soup is so good on rainy spring days.
I made and canned 15 jars this week. Such a handy meal to have sitting on the shelf.
Mmm, my favorite soup.
Scotland make the best homemade soup. 👌
Got one in the freezer, time to make more, going to try your way one Saturday . Thanks Cheryl 😊
Another "ribsticker soup". Lovely 😋

That soup looks lovely, ❤️
Looks great! Love that you pronounce stock and seasoning as schtock and sheasoning
Looks delicious Cheryl. Thanks for sharing. 🙂❤
I'll be giving this a go Cheryl, I make your lentil & ham regularly it's delicious 😋
That’s exactly how it’s done. Looking forward to winter in Australia so I can cook this again.
Instead of herbs I ad a couple big pinches of ground cloves and serve with croutons.
Looks wonderful, thanks Cheryl.
This looks delicious. I love a good soup even in summer. I will have to put this in my homemade soup rotation. Great video always!
My favourite soup of all time. I usually use bacon bones, but I will try a ham hock. Looks absolutely delicious.
This looks really yummy not tried split pea soup before will definitely be giving this a go
Hi everyone from Australia 🇦🇺 👋
One of my favourite soups that i like to make with a chunk of ham, or a ham bone. Very similar except for chopped celery & seasonings... i use salt & pepper, 4 bay leaves & parsley. I love the bay leaf flavour so much, lots of bay. And either yellow or green split peas.

That looks super yummy. My grandma made this one time, I thought I was going to hate it because I'm not a fan of regular peas but it was awesome.
So lovely! I love split pea soup. I add rutabaga and carrots to mine, but that looks so simple and delicious! Thank you for sharing
I agree, white pepper is much nicer for most soups than black pepper
Totally agree James :)
@@WhatsForTea I also add a little celery salt
I've not seen a split pea soup recipe before. It looks yummy! We (my family) usually have a canned version (horrors, lol). I just may have to try this recipe. Thanks Cheryl :)
Looks delicious!
No ham but I will make it because it looks so good.
My favourite
Looks delicious as usual thankyou x
Making this now!
I cooked a split pea soup two days ago ❤️ I am vegetarian so no ham for me, but I added celery and turmeric to it and it was a m a z i n g!!
Some crusty bread with the soup 😋
Delicious and easy recipe! Thank you *so much*!
I’m making that soup for sure
Looks so yummy! I think I like your recipe better than mine! 😉
I make mine in the Instant Pot and it takes 18 minutes! And I make it quite often and must have a bay leaf in it!
Even better the next day!
Yum! Since the weather is turning cool you cab bet I will try your recipe. Your recipes look fantastic. Thank you for sharing them with us 😊 ❤️
Thank you!
Yes thanks for the recipe question though do you soak the peas overnight
I love white pepper it goes better with fish as well as ham :)
Hi great vid looks gorgeous, could I do this exact recipe in a slow cooker ? Many thanks
I usually find some ham bones/hocks can be salty so I simmer them for 1 hour then change the water.
That was interesting. We make an nearly identical soup (ärtsoppa for those that want to google it) here in Sweden and residues of that soup have been found on Bronze Age pottery.
I wonder if that is yet another dish the Vikings brought over to your shores?
You’ve forgot the tiger loaf, to dip in it 😉
Oh aye, or a slice of plain bread ;)
@@WhatsForTea aye mothers pride would do the job 😁
In the ham hock not already super salty?
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, I should love this soup but the initial cooking of the ham makes the stock really greasy?
ah harty an cheap i do like a wee bit a mint sause in it tho to sever maybe some cream
Split pea I will try….but do you have easy recipe for lentil soup
Delicious and wholesome but is there a factory somewhere where the workers split peas all day
👍👍
Can you make spainch curry please
Oh I don't think I've tried that :)
Great show. Yuck meats. Ciao.
I come here for the accent....and the recipes... lol
You shouldn’t worry about it one of the happiest points is listening to you “rambling” take care.
Trad soup will soon be a thing of the past given the energy costs as no one will be able to afford the cost of cooking it.
