OK... I'm sorry but I have to disagree with several topics in this video. I am a designer of compression equipment like the turbocharger on the Type R. What is described in the video is not correct. The Type R already has a blow off valve. It is located right next to the inlet pipe connection to the turbo (it is actually the actuator for the BOV which is located in the turbocharger). It is black plastic covered. If you look there is a rod that extends from that to the exhaust side of the turbocharger. That rod is connected to a flapper that sits between the compressor discharge and the expander (the exhaust side of the turbo) discharge. When you get off the throttle and the engine can not take all the pressurized air between the compressor and the intake valves, the BOV opens to send pressurized air from the discharge side of the compressor to the exhaust system. No air gets recycled back into the inlet side of the compressor it is dumped to the exhaust. What is dangerous with the aftermarket BOVs is they are located so far from the compressor, so when you're off the throttle some of that air that is closer to the compressor can not make it to the BOV, so it could travel backwards to the compressor and cause a reverse flow into the compressor. This is called surge (not stall, stall is when you don't have enough air into the inlet of the compressor). This reverse flow is what is damaging to the compressor which makes this the real issue, not the ECU not knowing about the recycled air flow. Can the aftermarket BOV located in the charge pipe work without risking damage to the compressor? Sure, but they have to be engineered correctly (which means account for the volume of air in the system and the pressure gradient and other things) and without me looking at the calculations, I would not trust my turbo's health to one. I love Gato's channel, but I'm afraid the technical reasons are not correct.

It's amusing. I actually disagree with your statements. The valve on the civic type r is a "recirculation valve" it takes the air from the pressurised side of the compressor and recirculates it back into the intake side of the compressor, so instead of discharging the air to atmosphere, it flows round the turbo compressor. You can see this recirculation valve at 6:11 on the engine that's on the dyno. It's quite a flat disc with a pipe coming out of the middle (vacuum control line)
The rod you speak of, now that connects to an electronic actuator that is simply mounted on the outside of the compressor and has absolutely nothing to do with the compression side of the turbo. That rod goes from the actuator to the turbine side (exhaust) and is an electronically controlled waste gate.
What this guy in the video is saying about the MAF sensor and air leaving the system with a BOV is absolutely true.
I'm not sure what compression equipment you design but it is most certainly not turbos.

If you recirculate your bov back into your intake manifold. AND REPLACE your recirculating valve, you should be ok, you’re now basically using the the bov to do the job the oem recirculating valve used to do. At least it was this way with turbo Nissans.
Also, if you don’t run a recirculating valve or bov, you actually spool faster between gears. Mainly because the turbo doesn’t have to start from scratch.

Guys, I ran an hks on my 17 civic SI for 4 years. No issues. Talked to 3 tuners and they all said the same thing. It causes you to run rich which just runs the cylinders cooler which is a good thing. I have one on my 21 type R. I removed the stock BPV and put a block off plate on it. no issues to report other than with my injen intercooler, hks charge pipes, msd blaster coils, prl CAI with race MAF and a flash pro I have a bit more torque than I need in a fwd. Some of his terminology was off. The hot side of the intercooler is the air before it's charged with the intercooler and the cold side is after the air is charged. I think he was using the exhaust side of the impeller wheel to describe the hot side which is true when you are discussing the exhaust vs intake. Too much misinformation. However, I would not put one on without a tuner. This will help reflash the ecu to get a better calculation. My next upgrade will be the hondata MAF 500. The stock MAF will not read high enough for upgraded air flow. Which is what really causes the issues because the factory MAF is limited.

Talked with HKS, talked with Honda dealer, asked them questions about the BOV and pipe... Both said that it does NOT affect the engine in any bad way.... as long as you replace the pipe with the valve... which HKS does in the whole package 🤔 The whole HKS kit comes with the valve, withe the pipe and a small filter that you install on the air lines. My friend runs the Mishimoto Air Intake with the BOV valve on his FK8 since over a year now - not a single issue. My FK8 is stock and I am still confused if to get a BOV or not. After watching your video and writing the previous comment, I took my keys and went to my buddy. He was changing fluids on his FK8, I told him about your point of view and forced him to make a test :p We took off the whole BOV with the pipe and pipings... The first thing we have noticed after just taking off one of the rubber lines was... a striking and almost choking smell of gas! It was ridiculous, seriously! It was almost like you were sniffing gas from the gas tank lol We took everything off and checked the spark plugs... full of grease and sh*t on them. We checked mine and they were of course crystal clear. I have pushed him a little bit more and my buddy confessed that... numerous times the car simply stalled, especially when he had the clutch pedal depressed and was reving gently the car, like on a parking lot or entering his garage. We have reinstalled the stock pipe and connected everything as original. He took the car for a spin, returned and said... I would kiss FlyinGato if I could, that Dude is a genious! It's single turbo.. and there are only 5 turbo options on this car.. 4 requiring extensive aftermarket fitting and 1 (soon to be 2) direct drop ins.. both would require a tune... But if you read the forums...
E85 fuel conversion (E30 specific) with a tune on stock everything will net you 380ish WHP... Direct injection systems are the limit so unless you want a 6k MOTEC system.. or hondatas fueling solution. 3k.. your stuck.. and anything after 400lb torque would recommend porting the heads building rods and a clutch.... Honda know engine design but I wonder why they didn't put in dual injection to prevent carbon build up? Toyota does this and their not even turbo charging their cars yet.

from listening the bov is not open properly, you got surge back in your engine, my hks is way louder vent to atmosphere and you got a type r ,its quite ,my sport hatchback is way louder, problem not enough air in to open the bov so you definitely got turbo surge, once throttle closed went back into the engine and all that pressure ruined your turbo, air had no where to go ,did your turbo break off fins ? ???

BOV running on a MAF tuned car stupid? You bet. Is it causing engines to fail? Nah... anti-lag, bad tuning, and methanol injection systems failing are the biggest culprits on this. I wouldn't run one because I think they are stupid even on MAP tuned cars, but i've yet to see an engine die due to one.

  • @diecaprisonne643

This explanation is not entirely correct ... If you installed the BOV, lambda falls below 0.97. i'm mechanic master in germany at BBZ and we had this so much proven at dnyo it will more gain, because of fat air / gasoline mixture

100% not true.., there are no evidence that blow-off valve damage the engine..,
Plus.. my friend has a BOV on a typeR from brand new.., now 3 years leater, whit 90.000km.., still runing strong...no problems..
And in all GDI engines, you can smell gas in engine oil!!..

Such horrible misinformation in this video. This guy doesn’t know what hes talking about, Bisimoto debunked all the mis-information regarding bov’s and the civic si/type r. The issue of a bov causing issues with maf cars doesn’t apply to these cars because they have both maf and map, its impossible for a bov to effect afr’s of a honda period.

    • @FlyinGato
      @FlyinGato  Місяць тому

Even if it can compensate, there’s no reason to add a BOV, it adds nothing to performance, and I’ve seen it first hand causing issues
