  • The New L15B7 Turbo from Honda: We take a close look a the L15B7 that comes in the new Civic EX Turbo.
    By Brian Gillespie
    We got our hands on a turbo 1.5 liter from a 2017 Civic and it's radically different from Honda's engines of the past. It's compact, powerful and can out perform the last generation's K24 powered Civic Si. Imagine if you put that engine in a car that's lighter than the corpulent 2016 Civic.
    It's chock full of high tech goodness too. Honda tuners are already getting horse power numbers of 230+ using Hondata and KTuner modified computers. What will be possible when the new Si L15B7 comes with a starting point of 200HP?
    Honda has already sold over 100,000 of the new turbo Civics and guess what? They're already stacking up in salvage yards around the US. With numbers like that, it's only a matter of time before the price on used engines drops low enough to make them a viable swap choice. Right now, engines with just a few thousand mile can be had for under $1500.
    We're not wasting any time. We're going to try this engine on for size in everything we can get our hands on. And as soon as we figure out what car it's going to go in, you will be the first to know.
    Here's what we discovered when taking a closer look at the little bundle of Honda hotness...

    so happy to see an OG in the game enthusiastic and premoting inovation instead of bitching and moaning like most the honda fan boys who don't wannna leave the K's behind.
    i can only imagine what they would have done back in 01 when folks started tinkering with the Ks and everyone thought it would never be able to stand up against the B series. eager to see wha
    t comes of this for good or bad.

      ANDRE BRODIE That is bc this turbo mini motor barely makes what a NA K does. When everyone is going big 4 banger like Subaru with the 2.5 and Mazda with the 2.3 turbo...Honda does this??? IMO and many other people who see reality...see this as a step backwards vs "innovation". Honda should have just made a newer turbo K instead of this crap

      Honda has their big power 4cyl in the type r. this is their base motor that they want to hypermile. its reasonable and with proper bolt ons which is what honda is best known for. it's gonna be a bulk (d series esq motor that's in alot of hondas. these are good things. if you want set on kill go get the type r.

    • @MikeyMike923
      @MikeyMike923 7 років тому +1

      This isn't a fair statement as the Type R won't be mass produced, it will be limited availability. They need a detuned k20c for the masses imo.

    • @VTECAcademy
      @VTECAcademy  4 роки тому

      Apparently that is a problem in colder climates with short trips where the engine doesn't reach operating temp. Honda says it's rare. There is a software fix for the problem and Honda has extended the warranty on those engines. I hadn't heard about before your post.

    • @timbraun3716

      @@VTECAcademy I appreciate the fact you responded to my comments. However I am disappointed that you "VTEC academy" are not more knowledgeable on the Honda Oil Dilution issue. Just a little bit of homework would reveal that the oil dilution problem is significant on the Honda 1.5L turbo motor. It is not just a short trips and cold weather problem either. Additionally, it is global in scope too. The "software" fix does not work. It just keeps it from being stupid obvious. The worst part of this story ... Honda has everyone, like yourself, convinced this is normal and a nonissue. All the dealers here in the greater Minneapolis area were willing to deny this issue even exists until they were presented with the facts. Then they just treated like an illegal alien with STD's instead of an ignorant consumer. I only ask that you do your homework and report the facts. I actual did the math and the calculations and they don't add up.

      Tim Braun Hi! How did you notice it? I drive a 2018 civic hatch in Europe, but here as far as i know there is no oil dilution problem. (Or maybe not that serious). I drove my car the whole winter (-8 to 5 deg c in the morning) every workday for 8 to 20 km trips daily and a few longer drives in the winter. I read something about fast rising oil levels, but I didnt notice it, maybe 2mm increase or so, but I‘m not sure. However all engines here are L15BA engines with 182 hp, as far as I know there is a minor difference in the piston design/rings between the two, but I‘m not entirely sure. What I find worrying is the 20.000km oil change interval here in Europe. Still better than the 30.000km of some other european manufacturers tho.

    so many fanboys complaining about the looks of the engine, gentleman its an engine. its under the bonnet (hood) for a reason!!! this engine is far more advanced than the k, f, and b series!! that's why its so groundbreaking, shoot im getting 45-50 mpg in our ext sedan. i would recommend drive one since you wont buy one and you will see where us actual civic x gen owners are coming from. its just a matter of time before someone starts developing parts and starts making these motors go far beyond their potential, just like it has happened with every new honda engine that has been released through the years , the E, PO7a, A series man i can go on,one thing i can advise learn to adjust to change , have an open mind, because Honda is Honda and who knows what they are planning next

    Great video, but it is so sad to see that Honda is using so much plastic in the design of an engine. This engine is guaranteed to have so many problems after 5 or 6 years because half of the engine is plastic. Being exposed to heat from a turbo motor and then cooling off is going to make it brittle, weak, and it will start cracking causing unneeded issues that older Hondas will never suffer from

    Although these motors cannot be swapped into eg/ek/dc, maybe the turbo system will be a good swap over for d-series guys; since the turbo system is designed for a smaller displacement engine already.
    I'm imagining a rod and piston, coil on plug d16z6 eg with one of these turbo system, retaining ac/and power steering. Quick spool, w/ low hp, high torque -- wll make for a great dd and clean sleeperish underhood setup.

    My 1997 Honda Del Sol Si is a 1600 sohc vtec. It has no turbo. It has multi point fuel Injection.
    I have heard direct Injection and the problems it has with turbo charged engine. My car has
    215,000 miles. I am the original owner. I am not convinced that these engines will be as good
    As my engine. My car has hardly any plastic in the engine . New BMW have a lot of plastic and with time the plastic failes. The engine area heat makes the plastic brittle and it fails. If Honda is
    Following BMW so safe money their cars will fall apart. Five years on a BMW is about it and Mercedes is the the same. The S class Mercedes is not a good car. My Del Sol has double
    wishbone suspension front and rear with sway bars front and rear. I don’t think Honda is the
    Car it was. All this horsepower in new cars is unneeded. My car will do 100 miles per hour and
    more. My car only has 127 horsepower but it is a quick well handling car. In my option the
    Turbo charging with plastic engine parts is only making a unreliable car!

I also need 2c a scroll type electric AC compressor. Computer controlled minor burn cycle enhancements, increased use of high strength metals, increased of FRP& sodium filled valves r all expected minor advancements that r 20 years overdue.

    Notice he emphasized the extensive use of plastic. Heat and plastic don't get along, just ask the guys over at BMW/VW/Audi etc what happens to their plastic parts ie coolant tanks, plastic thermostat housings, cracks in plastic piping. That heat shield won't do much to protect that charge pipe with the increased heat generated with the turbocharger. Wish honda stuck with using metal components because I believe long term reliability will be affected. I realize plastic parts are cheaper to make to keep costs down but as a consumer I'm willing to pay that difference for better reliabilty. But who knows, maybe Honda will prove me wrong.

      I am not sure what your particular circumstances are, but the problem you are having seems to be bad with cold climates and cars that take a lot of short trips. When the engine doesn't get hot enough fuel sticks to the cylinder walls and gets by the rings to dilute the oil. Honda is offering a service campaign that they think will mitigate the problem. They've even extended the engine warranty on over 1 million vehicles. I would check with your dealer if you haven't had the service and maybe inquire about the extended warranty. If the dealer isn't cooperative then go directly to Honda.

    I have an issue with my very first Honda I bought .(2017Civic Si), love the car but I was concerned when my oil level was unusually high before my first 10k mile oil change . I mentioned it to the dealer service manager and he told me everything is A Ok..So, I did the oil change myself on the next interval..but when i ck the oil level after 3k mi...it is again waaaaay too high and it smells gas!! Again, the dealer sez everything is normal.There's no way Honda can convince me that there will be no long term effect on the engine's reliability since the oil's viscosity is compromised and changing the oil every 3k mi is unacceptable . I live in sunny California btw and i drive long distance and no traffic since i work the swing shift. I can sense a big class action lawsuit on this since i found out just now that Im not the only one with this problem

      Oil dilution problems were common on the L15B7. Fuel sprayed at high pressure blew past the piston rings and into the crankcase. Then caused the oil reak of fuel. Was a common problem but I think it has been corrected as of 2022.

    • @KevinMO91
      @KevinMO91 7 років тому

      How? With just a tune it's gotten all the way up to 255whp and 301wtq, it's already turbo so a turbo upgrade is as simple as bolting a new turbo up, it's direct injection so you dont need to buy new injectors a new fuel pump to run e85, all you need is a tune and e85..... The real questions you need to be asking are
      How much HP can the engine hold stock?
      how much HP can the tranny hold stock?
      how much HP can the axles hold stock?
      How much HP can stock Turbo hold? (not as big of a deal since turbo swaps will def be happening nice to know for basic bolt on builds though.)
      The clutch already slips at 255whp and 301tq, so we know you have to upgrade clutch...

    • @Arctice36
      @Arctice36 7 років тому

      Kevin Osorio I guess you don't know much about engines but once you max out direct injectors you need to upgrade them as well as the fuel pump, no one makes direct injectors because they are expensive to make and buy, so you'll need a port injection kit to run both direct and port injection

    No space in the engine bay. I dont understand what honda is thinking engineering this engine for civic and crv. Is going to become an nightmare to work on later and for an engine just make over 200 hp. The reliability is out the door for this one. Look at all those plastic pieces jesus and gas could enter the crankcase from low temp, high boost , and high load this happen to all turbocharged gas engine. Just engineered are directed injected 2.0l that make power and fuel economy.
