Hi Patricia! I am planning on doing some Greece Island hoping in August 2021. I’m from Riverside Cali. Can you recommend some places in Chania to eat and to hotels. Also maybe some Greece travel tips... thanks !
socallawrence Hi! Lucky you to be going to Greece! Seriously, any taverna you eat at will be delicious. My favorite taverna was Blue Restaurant in Chania. Depending on whether you want easy access to the beach or city center, would determine where you would want to stay. In the city center, there are many great restaurants and local shops. You also have the harbor near the city center of Chania. All within walking distance. There are many great villages. There’s Rethymno, Heraklion and lots of smaller villages. I would suggest staying in an Air BnB vs a hotel. While in Europe, I always stayed in Air BnB’s and never had one problem. If in Crete and you have time, look up in Google- Andronikis Cretan House in the village of Loutra. Niki does greek cooking lessons in her home and it’s the best most authentic Greek food ever!! Her food is phenomenal. I promise you will not be disappointed! Your money will go a long way in Greece. Food is very, very affordable. We lived like millionaires in Greece with American salaries. Now back to my humble living in California 😥! Safe travels!
Love Crete.. went to the party central Malia when I was in my 20s and visited again in my late 30s, staying in a lovely little harbour village..a must is the sunset off road safari tour up into the mountains.. great place

Greek cuisine is heaven. From the 36 countries I have visited in the world, I absolutely fell in love with Greece, for many things including it's cuisine. It's incredibly fresh/diverse but most of all, the flavours I had, was better than I have ever tasted anywhere else. From Turkey with it's massive hygiene problems and often enough mediocre food with even half rotten tomatoes that I have tasted, to Italy where 90% is pasta pizza with almost every "instalata" costing 8-11 euro's while it only consists of just some salad leaves or shaved carrot. I was so surprised, or their bakeries where 2 desserts costs 10 euro's and being pretty good, they where not heavenly. The point is. Ingredients in Greece are of the highest quality and taste, and their dishes are sublime, varying from very simple to very complex. It's the combination of all factors combined that makes Greek cuisine so great

I really admire how you were able to remain so calm, professional, positive and respectful even after biting into "entrail remains". Most people would freak out. Some would even make a huge drama over something much less unpleasant than this. You, Mark Wiens, have earned my utmost respect! Don't ever change. :)
I’m so glad to see someone who’s happy to travel for not only great food but better companionship with his wife and son. I wish Mr. Wiens all the best and good luck with all of your foodie adventures!
Anna Tamparow you judgemental globalist. Because applying for a visa for a country in which tourism pretty much props up its economy is really hard isn’t it😂
I experienced a thunderstorm in Adelianos Kampos (if I remember the town name right) which is like a suburb of Rethymno on Crete. Was quite a sight especially as it was still thundering when taking off from Chania airport at night some hours after the thunderstorm at the hotel. Crete is definitely a place I’d like to visit again someday, loved the weather and relaxed atmosphere there
@@dimitrakapa4887 I could well imagine going on vacation to Greece again sometime in the future when it’s safe to travel again. Loved the warm summer weather of Crete when I was there in August 2015! The roughly 4-4,5h flight time from Sweden was somewhat manageable for me as well (severe chronic pain) so Greek islands are a lot more accessible travel time wise compared to say Canary Islands (which takes about 6h or so I think) all while both having wonderful weather and scenery
Greek food id to kill for. Amazing places to visit. When Mark takes a bite of food its like opening up a tunnel. When he is describing what he is about to eat, he is like a symphony conductor.
Not even saying this because I am greek, but greek people along with our food are truly amazing.. i loved watching this, made me so happy and also emotional as i feel so connected to the people, and obviously seeing you love our food and culture is so great, glad that you appreciated the amazing beautiful foods that greeks offer, there is much more to taste..
I really enjoyed my 4 days stay in Crete especially with the locals. They have wonderful local foods and the best olive oil and pickled olives I think in the whole Greece. I purchased so many household items that are locally made by the folks there like handwoven bed sheets, table runner and placemats plus of course their superb olive oils in cans and various organic honey. For sure I will go back there once the pandemic is over.
Wish I knew about this gyro place when my son and I where in Chania early October. Btw the ligthouse was once part of the mosque on the other side of the harbour (the dome shaped building).
Finally I had the time to watch your Crete videos, and I'm stunned. You bring me back to the island where I was some summers ago, and had my best time because of all the heartwarming people. We visited Chania, and Rethymnon, but stayed more outside on the countryside, away from the main cities and the crazy amount of people. But they both were beautiful of course ^^ Ohh and luckely we met a super taxidriver, such a gorgeous olderly man, didn's spoke any english but we had so much fun try to communicate with hand and feet, and I had a translation book with me and tried to speak with it haha. So at the end of the holidays (we always called him to ask if he drives us to gorges or monastrys, outside in the country side) we landed at a small tavern next the ocean, run by a familymember of him, and he invited us(!what!) Had such tasty Gavros(small grilled fish, eaten the whole) Raki, and a incredible time, laughing, talking to the people. He gave us a sight on the hospitality and friendlyness I've never imagined, if someone visit Crete try to get in touch with locals, it will incrase the experience 1000times because they will overwhelm you ... and you bring me back all those feelings. Thank you. Would love to go back as soon as I can ^^ lovely greetings to you, your family and everyone from Crete
@plejade4125 Apparently you are a lovely and hospitable person yourself. Greek people were always egger to learn new things, meet new people and make friends. You said it yourself, you didn't speak the same language! Making a friend is because you are a friendly person too. What some visitors of Greece misunderstand is that hospitality and friendliness does not come with the vacation package they have bought. We are very tolerant and kind with rude people that visit us and believe me they are a lot. But i believe it is in our dna to help. Even me as a very introverted and not so friendly person when i see some foreigner who needs directions or help i try to help because i immediately think, oh he is away from home. So do not mistake the Greek spirit with subservience. People who visit the same destinations in Greece again and again can tell you why they do it.
Haha yeah that was lamb intestines wrapped/stuffed with other chopped organs. They are called "gardoumpakia". Sometimes they have nothing inside, they are like mini kokoretsi. Depends on the dish. And they always made by hand. I really hope you ate sea urchin "salad" in Crete. Basically fresh urchin drenched in olive oil and a little lemon juice. You dip bread in it and its like tasting a butter made from the Aegean sea! Also the authentic cretian gyro pita(aka "souvlaki") is different from Athens. They are double the size, lots of fries in it and they put thick greek yogurt instead of tzatziki. What you ate is the more of the athenian version. You are right about the green lemons, they are like a big lime. Sharper taste. Last, i also hope you ate wedding pilaf (aka "gamopilafo"). Goat cooked for hours in a pot with rice. The rice is flavored from the meat and the meat melts in you mouth. Served traditionally in weddings thus its name. Love from Athens, Sofia 💙🙋
Keetu's Diary hahaha yeah it could be a great idea for a dish to serve in Halloween 😂 ! Greeks don't eat dishes with organs very often, too much work to make or they don't like the taste. The ones that are most consumed are kokoretsi and mageritsa (we eat it at a specific Easter day) .Its lamp chops, chopped organs and gardoumpakia with lettuce, dill, green onions and a couple other things cooked in a pot. The sause of the dish called augolemono, which means egg and lemon. Whipped egg whites with lemon juice and put in the magerista while still warm, so the egg cooks a little.
Hey Mark, my husband and are right now in chania and we did all the restaurants you recmended, they were all very good, my most favourite was the one in the mountains called dounia. The owners were very nice people. I loved bougatsa as well.
Having eaten Gyros on many occasions around the Greek islands I would say it was the best value snack you can have anywhere in the world...the rest of the food in this video looked spectacular so thanks for sharing...
*_Entrail remains_* 😳😂😂 The *bougatsa* looked very tasty; my neighbor is Greek and she makes it regularly. Really loving this Greece series. I realize that Mark and Ying bring out the best in the people they meet but all the locals have been genuinely delightful. 👍

I just left Chania 10 days ago crying after living here for 2 and half years. I have fallen in love with Chania, Crete and Greece as a whole. Beautiful Island with beautiful Greek people, few malakias though, hahaha. But seriously, I love Chania with beautiful beaches in Stavros, Kalathas, Agios Apostoli, Niachora, American Alley, Kournas,, Fallasana, Kissamous, Rhythmno, Omalos Mountains, Platanias, etc etc etc. It's always a vibrante city with endless things to do. I will definitely marry a Greek woman one day and retire there one day.
Just want to say a big thank you for your amazing enthusiasm and up-beat way of showing off the amazing ways and portraying the lovely hospitality of Crete and its amazing food and people. You do seem to be the real deal!

My favorite food on earth is Greek. I was salivating watching you eat the pork gyro! Greeks use fresh, delicious ingredients---lots of wonderful vegetables that are so fresh, I love the homemade pitas, the pork, spanakopita, moussaka, pastichio, souvlaki, baba ganoush........I had some Greek men in my family by marriage, and there is nothing on earth that makes them happier, than to feed family! Superior. OH MARK.....kudos to you, for you to not vomit after eating that colon and the undigested remains.......you have a STRONG stomach!
Hello, I'm a Greek woman truck driver in America. Thank you for loving Greece and Greek food. Babba ganush is Turkish. It's the eggplant dip, "melitzano- salata", easy to make: bake a whole eggplant in the oven (better wrapped in aluminum foil) then let it cool, peel it and throw the peel away (it has... nicotine in it) then smash the interior with a fork, add salt pepper, olive oil, vinegar, garlic. It goes well with tzatziki dip and grilled bread. Good luck 😋😀
Another nicely done video. I appreciate your contributions to my knowledge of other cultures. Greek music and Greek food have been amongst my favorites for a long time.
As a greek i ve been waiting for a greek tour for sone time now and boy,you didnt dissapoint!!My opinion might be a bit subjective, but i think you wont find that sense of hospitality and friendlines in many places around the world.I think we can cook meat very well too, especially lamb :p.... Cant wait for the next videos...
I did a search of Greek food -- and found your series. Glad I did. The best way I can describe you...you're like the Bob Ross of food tourism. Love it!
Mizithra is a favorite of mine since I was introduced many years ago in the Old Spaghetti Factory's popular spaghetti dish. It has an amazing flavor you can't get anywhere else. Salty, sour, chalky. Yum.
Just try to find something you really enjoy Jai that makes you happy...and keep doing it. Food is actually one of the greatest things..that you can fully enjoy every single day. Get busy living or get busy dying. Good motto!!
I have been traveling to Chania for over 15 years, my parents have been living in Kissamos for that length of time. really great video with great tips, thanks! I love Greek culture and its hospitable always helpful people 🫶🏻🇬🇷
@@TheSunUpInTheSky They put potatoes in Chania too, just not at Oasis. Oasis has a very unique pita gyro, not found in other souvlaki places in Chania. All pita gyro places in Chania use yoghurt instead of tzatziki by default. If you want tzatziki, most places will give you the option on request (not at Oasis though).
Mark, I have to say that I am really excited to see you in Chania, not so much cause its my city but because you are really going out of your way to discover the authentic food of Crete that represents the culture, the people and the island itself not like most tourists who usually go for the ubiquitous paste-like mousaka, frozen pizzas, fries and lousy souvlaki before binge - drinking. If I had seen you anywhere you would had come for dinner to my place. Next time!

I really admire how you were able to remain so calm, professional, positive and respectful even after biting into "entrail remains". Most people would freak out. Some would even make a huge drama over something much less unpleasant than this. You, Mark Wiens, have earned my utmost respect! Don't ever change. :)
I too am extremely impressed!
I’m so glad to see someone who’s happy to travel for not only great food but better companionship with his wife and son. I wish Mr. Wiens all the best and good luck with all of your foodie adventures!

Too late! After December 31st 2020, you will need a visa, just as the EU citizens will need! Next time, consider how you'll vote in a plebiscite!
Anna Tamparow you judgemental globalist. Because applying for a visa for a country in which tourism pretty much props up its economy is really hard isn’t it😂

Never a cloud in the sky in beautiful greece

Right now I’m standing outside oasis eating the best pita gyros I have ever had, thanks for the tip.
With tzatiki sauce right with garlic!
Oooh so lucky! Gyros are my absolute favorite!!!
Wish I knew about this gyro place when my son and I where in Chania early October. Btw the ligthouse was once part of the mosque on the other side of the harbour (the dome shaped building).

Greek food is so good can't wait to visit Greece again 🇬🇷 Thanks Mark another great Vlog
Thank you!
@@antimimoniakos I don't understand what you mean by that, but thanks and have a nice day😄
@plejade4125 Apparently you are a lovely and hospitable person yourself.
Love from Athens, Sofia 💙🙋
that is awesome explanation... :)
Greetings from Nepal!!!
Food Nepal Aww Nepal, what is the best dish there in your opinion? If i am able to travel there in the future i will make sure to try it ☺
Keetu's Diary hahaha yeah it could be a great idea for a dish to serve in Halloween 😂 !
Wonderful piece of information. Greetings from Kenya.

Oh Debbie thank you so much for your kind words about my country!! 👍💗🇬🇷You are welcome here anytime 😊

Mark, in Chania they dont eat souvlaki with Tzatziki but with Greek Yogurt and thats what u ate at Oasis! :D Your vlog is amazing! peace!
He was eating a gyro with tzatiki
@Simulation World 2020 It's true. Every place does it different. In Kalamata, they put potato chips in with the gyro.
Spiros Zaharakis nnnnnnnn
oasis, the place he was eating, does not put tzatziki at all so he was eating it with yogurt
