Chaos AD is actually my favorite album. It is so special and not just Thrash
Chaos AD is a groovy banger bro.
Beneath The Remains will always be my favourite with Arise and Chaos A.D close behind
Yeah Arise was my favourite for a long time then I started listening to beneath the remains recently and it's become my No 1 all of the sudden lol
Lobotomy is such an underrated track
Beneath is so good.
Progressing in learning guitar on these 3 albums, such a fun to play (even if challenging)
Against gets so much undeserved hate
Man I really thought that album was bad. Against and Nation and Roorback just barely had a few good songs btwn them. Idk I guess different strokes eh? I didn’t mind A-Lex and beyond though
Against is real bad imo
I agree, Against I think it's one of Derrick's best. Nation doesn't move the game on at all it's a poor album.
It's mostly that Against and Nation are pure mess
I’m not into that album personally, but It’s still a very interesting album.
I picked up a copy of Beneath the Remains for $1 in a bargain bin around 94, and this decision started my love for metal as a whole. I definitely have bias toward that album, as I consider it one of the greatest metal albums ever
Based bro. I used to think it was alright, but that album’s grown on me a ton and now I love it.
Beneath The Remains is my favourite Sepultura album. Classic.
Sepultura are just legends in thrash metal and in the Brazilian metal scene. One of the first metal bands I got into. Their early stuff with Max Cavalera is downright legendary. I’m bummed out that they are retiring still but they had a great legacy and influence on metal. Here would be my ranking:
S - Beneath the Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D.
A - Morbid Visions, Schizophrenia, Roots
B - Machine Messiah, Quadra
C - Against, Dante XXI, A-Lex, The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart
D - Nation, Roorback, Kairos
Yeah, that my ranking too
Based ranking
I love both Max and Derrick eras Sepultura
Based. I personally enjoy Max more, but Derrick has some great albums I think get overlooked.
Cool ranking. Nice to know that sepultura’s been growing on you too. I remember first getting into Death Metal, hearing sepultura, and thinking they were just alright. Since then though I’ve casually relistened to some of their material, but they still didn’t click with me fully UNTIL this year. Thanks to chatting with some of the discord users as well as my tastes changes a ton this year I did a deep dive on their discography and they grew on me a ton. I used to treat them like they were a C or even D tier band tbh, but nowadays I enjoy them more and regard them as a B when judging their whole discography. If I was judging the Max era albums id say they’re an Easy A or a Tentative S since while I respect and enjoy Derrick Green’s albums, I just enjoy Max’s albums more. Schizophrenia and Roots are my favorite 2 albums from them since I enjoy their atmospheres a ton. Think after watching this video Schizophrenia would probably be my pick for favorite Sepultura album. I adore the atmosphere and how it conjures imagery of an asylum or being lost in a gothic woods, least to me lol. Roots is my second favorite, but I more so judge it as a soulfly album than a sepultura record. Still one of my favorites and I wish people would give the record a chance. The atmosphere is phenomenal on that record and it’s so sweet hearing their cultural inspirations in the forefront. Cool video and keep up the great content.
Beneath the remains is Goat. Its their reign in blood. Speed is key here, all the songs are ruthless. I never get tired of the bass guitar ending to stronger than hate.
Roots is a pretty good change - up from the norm. One of those times where changing up from the original style is executed perfectly.
Yep agreed.
I disagree. I listened to Roots a week ago and it also aged like fermented shit..
I like Roots, I just think it’s a bit bloated and long. Some of the ideas also haven’t aged very well
Nah it stinks
Yeah a good change to cringe
I'm actually revising their catalogue right now, and Dante is such a great record
Ah yeah Dante is really good
Beneath the Remains at Perfections warms up my soul
The band that changed metal forever! There would be no death, black, new metal without them.
Greetings from Brazil! \m/
P.S.: Brazilians tend to reject "roots" because the songs are heavily influenced by local rhythms that headbangers hate.
Possessed created death metal and Venom created black metal
@@TobikunOuO 😂
Yeah, and then you woke up.
@@Vdoom777 you are a ignorant about this. Shut up!
lol what is this comment for real
“Roots” is, for me, the GOAT metal vocal performance; for my money, no one has ever sounded more brutal, more raw. In his prime (in the studio) Max was the beast to end all beasts
As a 90's metal kid who religiously had either 'Beneath the Remains' or 'Arise' taking turns in his Sony Walkman for literally years(Chaos A.D. didn't exist yet), these two albums are premium Sepultura to me. The definitive soundtrack of my first few years in highschool. I remained a massive fan during the 'Chaos A.D.' era, but that album never managed to spark the same levels of excitement to me due to the lack of breakneck speed and ferocious agression. Still a good album though. I remember getting tickets for Paradise Lost and Sepultura when i was sixteen, it was supposed to be my first 'real' concert experience but i had to let it slip because i cought a nasty case of the flu and had a high fever. I was completely gutted that i wasn't able to see my favorite band, and in hindsight in their best years on top of that. Bummer. Still.☹️ When 'Roots' came out it was a massive dissapointment for me, my angry, frustrated teenage-brain wanted nothing but aggressive and violent music. I was heavily into grind, death-and blackmetal and the slower, groovy and more accessible style didn't cut it for me. It wasn't the same Sepultura and i lost interest alltogether. I learned to appreciate 'Roots' later on when i became more open-minded musically, and leaned to appreciatle different styles and genres in music. I heaven't heard the majority of Derrick-era Sepultura as a result of that, but a friend made me aware of 'Machine Messiah' a couple of years ago and i enjoyed that album. Also gave 'Quadra' a spin and that one was even better! Oh yeah, rankings..
1. Beneath the Remains
2. Arise
3. Schizophrenia
4. Chaos A.D.
....And Roots, Quadra and Machine Messiah are a good listen too! No particular order.
I gotta say, I love the memes and pop culture clips that are used as transitions and interjections for your statements. I often find them overused and obnoxious on other channels. But they feel very pleasant on your videos.
Thank you, I love comments like these.
I will never forget the day I was in my room listening to music, probably Metallica or something and my dad opens my door and goes, “Jake, listen to this shit” and put territory on, changed my perception of drumming
Also thank you from a fellow Roots apologist, and you list the exact reason why, this album has such a cool story to it and they got as in touch as they could with their “roots”
That’s a Based dad bro. Nice
Glad to see A-Lex so high. But I'm disagree about picking Roots above Chaos A.D.
Agreed, and what is wrong with the vocal delivery on Refuse/Resist? I’m not hearing what the issue is. Chaos A.D. probably my #1. Also like Roots a lot though.
Old School Sepultura Fan here. Pretty good ranking. But Arise and Chaos AD are my favorites
I personally never understood the hate for Roots, the album goes so hard and is objectively sick. If people have a problem with the length I totally understand and agree with that but other than that it’s a solid album that makes you wanna headbang
It's really slow but has its moments. We don't hate it but it isn't vicious like the older albums.
Totally agree about Roots. As a Brazilian, it was so crazy to hear the Brazilian music influences together with the downtuned, chugging riffage, which was very new at the time. Before this album, they were already the biggest band here but they didn't really have that special thing to differentiate them from other bands. Roots delivered that perfectly
I would put the "Mediator" album on Fantastic myself, almost "Perfection". Sounds like the most cared for album post Max, mixing quality aside.
Quadra is a top 3 album from me just below Chaos & Beneath
Totally agree, only I would put ARISE in Perfection, Arise has good riffs, fantastic solos, brutal drums, uuuuuffffffff 🤤
Saludos, 🇲🇽
Arise is so good
Beneath the remains and arise and schizophrenia are my favorites 🤟 a short havok tier list would be awesome
Probably gonna have to wait until the next album for that list
As a Brazilian, the amount of disrespect Roots gets is fucking unbelievable. IMO the best metal Brazilian metal album along with Holy Land by Angra.
1. Beneath the Remains
2. Arise
3. Chaos AD
4. Quadra
5. Machine Messiah
6. Schizophrenia
7. Dante XXI
8. Nation
9. Roots
10. Roorback
11. Kiaros
12. Morbid Visions
13. The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart
14. A-Lex
15. Against
1. Arise
2. Beneath The Remains
3. Chaos AD
4. Schizophrenia
5. The Mediator
6. Quadra
7. Machine Messiah
8. Kairos
9. Morbid Visions
10. Roots
11. A-lex
12. Dante
13. Against
14. Roorback
15. Nation
Both of your guy’s lists are based
I was curious as to where Dante XXI would land. It’s easily my favorite Derek-era album. It gets written off a lot but I’m glad to see it get some love :)
Fair ranking. As Sepultura is like a family member for me, and knowing how idiots the Cavaleras are, I`d probably put at least Quadra before some Cavaleras albums. That could be a matter of taste too. But overall, great. Thanks!
So glad to see Roots get some love! I always get lambasted by my friends for hyping this album up but it's actually perfection!
We call those people uncultured. Jk we all got different opinions. I also love Roots too and it’s cool to see people enjoy it as well.
Roots created a new metal genre because of the album Roots. And Axé (Tradition Brazilian Genre) is used in this Album.
I agree with you in some choices, disagree in some others... but most importantly, I would not take Sepultura's first few records (other than MV, of course) as influenced by others. That is, to me, taking them lightly; they were already established enough to be the influencers and not the influenced by then.
Anyway, my rank would go:
PERF: Arise, Quadra, Roots,
Fantastic: Chaos AD, Beneath TR, Schizo.
GREAT: Roorback, Against, A-lex, The mediator....
GOOD : Dante XXI, Machine M, Kairos
OK: Nation
Best albums for me are Roorback and Quadra. Ive always genuinely preferred Derrick to Max. Do love the early albums though
Chaos A.D. was the first extreme metal album I bought after graduating from WC Thrash and hearing Individual Thought Patterns at a friend's house. So that album is special to me. I would have moved several albums up or down a spot, but I mostly agree with you. Overall, I am less into their earliest stuff. So Beneath, Arise, Chaos would have been my top row and Roots, Quadra and Schizophrenia would have been my second.
Great video! I was a broken teenager when Max left. I bought the 'against'-album when it was released and was so disappointed! Sepultura wasn't sepultura anymore.
I just rebought 3 sepulturas CDs.i love seeing Max live to this day.
To me, it would be:
S Tier - Schizophrenia, Beneath The Remains, Arise and Chaos A.D.
A Tier - Quadra, Machine Messiah and A-Lex
B Tier - Morbid Visions(the re-recording by Cavalera Conspiracy would put into A Tier or even S, for sure), Roots, Mediator
C Tier - Dante XXI, Roorback(this one I need to re-listen, actually) and Kairos
D Tier - Against, Nation
Cool ranking man
Good to see all the Max Cavalera era albums in the top 2 tiers. Right where they belong.
I feel conflicted on which era of Sepultura I love more. The og Max era was amazing of course, but to me the Green era is more my style as I have been into more groovy metal as of lately. Against was an interesting start and Nation was a better version of what they were trying to do with Against. Everything after that I love, the vocals are great and Andreas Kisser is super underrated like why doesn’t anyone have him on their top guitarist list?
Good ranking. I would agree with everything except the Kairos Album. That was is amazing in my opinion. They still do a lot of the songs off of that album in general shows.
A-Lex was my intro to the band. Cavalera stuff is obviously the best, but A-Lex is their best album without them hands down. It’s amazing.
Beneath the Remains was one of the albums that helped shap my guitar playing, and Mass Hypnosis was actually my introduction to Sepultura, and the first song of theirs I learned how to play. Nice list, though I think both Machine Messiah and Quadra should've gone on the Fantastic tier. I really enjoyed the Derrick years and the music that the band put out after Max left, despite some people saying "nO cAvAlErA nO sEpUlTuRa"
Mass Hypnosis is such a good song man
Arise is perfection man!
I think i like the green era a bit more than the max era, nation being one of my favs.
Same i discovered them thru Roots then listened to my favorite max era Chaos AD , i bought Revolusongs EP on 2004 Find out that max was no longer the vocalist. The Hate on derrick green is real even my friends do hate him because they didnt listen to green era of Sepultura.
Based man. I enjoy Max more, but Green has some underrated material
With the exception of Roots, i completely agree with this tier list. And that is extremely rare, well done.
100% agree with Roots perfection man I love that album and I love everything before !
With all the respect to Cavalera-era undisputed classic, I found myself listening to Mediator, Kairos, Dante and Isolation way more often
All respect as well, but I’m with you
Nice one! Admittedly, I checked out on them after Max split and I am not familiar with very much after roots. Young me was fortunate to see them live here in Philly when the toured for every record remains thru roots, and good lawd, those memories still put them at the top of all live shows I’ve experienced. Schizophrenia is so criminally underrated. Cheers!
ABSOLUTELY. Schizophrenia is so freaking good man. I go back between that and Roots personally
Arise was my introduction. It will ALWAYS be number one. As will the Under Siege Live In Barcelona video.
Quadra def is in thier top 5. It has ledt my rotation since released
I feel that roots is an essential metal album
Schizophrenia is my favourite from Sepultura - totally agree on the "perfection" level.
Roots and Chaos AD are my favorite albums. And yes, love the Soulfly sound of course
Soulfly are so cool
Today! The top positions constantly change depending on the year. I've been listening to Sepultura since I was a teenager and the first tour I attended was the Schizophrenia tour, in Brazil.
Arise (1991)
Chaos A.D. (1993)
Beneath the Remains (1989)
Schizophrenia (1987)
Quadra (2020)
Machine Messiah (2017)
Morbid Visions (1986)
The Mediator Between something something something (2013)
Kairos (2011)
Roots (1996)
Dante XXI (2006)
A-Lex (2009)
Against (1998)
Nation (2001)
Roorback (2003)
Nice ranking man
I was actively ignoring roots when I was a teen because it was poser and sell out and shit lol. I missed so many cool albums and bands that I'm rediscovering now because of that silly attitude. Might be the best Sepultura album for me right now and the most interesting and successful transition/style change ever made by old-school thrash band
I haven't listened to all their stuff by any means. One thing I don't like about the band is their fanbase. Yes my favourite tracks and albums are from the Max era. But goddam so many fans just shit all over the Derrick era.
Nice video x
seems like sepultura were mostly struggling for their identity and song writing for quite a long time since max left but i would say kairos and quadra are my 2 favorite with quadra clearly being the pinnacle of all their efforts and its great they can do a farewell tour closing out on a high knowing everyone loves their final release
Chaos A.D.
Disorder unleashed
Starting to burn
Starting to lynch
Silence means death
Stand on your feet
Inner fear
Your worst enemy
Always hit's the spot of me
Right homie over here saying its corny but these dudes are from a 3rd world country that sees wars and large cartels and death often and have come so far this song is cool and the beat and change of pace for them was really nice especially in refuse/resist its truly one of their best songs. A true song of war!
This could be the wildest and most controversial ranking you've ever done haha. I'm only halfway through the video lol. But as always, I've gotta respect your honesty. You like what you like. Btw I love Roots too!!! Not as much as you but I support your decision haha. I can't really support that it's above BTR, Arise or Chaos AD mind.
Made me wanna go back through them from the start at the gym come new year. What a legacy they’re leaving behind but I think they called it at the right time and are going out on a strong note
Always better to go out with a bang
I agree. At first I got bummed since I felt they finally found a good sound with Derrick, but I think it’s great they’re calling it on a high note.
@@doomguyrox1156 definitely a good time. They’re going out while the world still loves them
@@braggingrightsmusic indeed
Was just flummoxed by the Morbid A placement on the death metal band ranking video.....and then you put roots in the perfection zone and TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!!! 😉😂
Chaos A.D., Arise, and Roots are absolute legends for me. Things were never the same without Max
True, but Derrick has some underrated material imo.
roots e um disco muito unico, quadra é um disco extremamente maduro, os ultimos discos de cada vocalistas são perfeitos. o Brasil sente muito orgulho do sepultura. Refuse Resist
no spanish please
@@vierxa989 ?????
@@vierxa989 why?
@@baiao6038 zuera kkkkkk, aqui é BR tbm. Abraço irmão, feliz ano novo
I love Sepultura, The new album Quadra is great. It's going to be really sad if Eloy goes to Slipknot. This might be the last album I enjoy from him on drums.
Personally think Roots is their best work..riff after riff!
YES
It’s either that or Scizophrenia for me. Either way I agree that it’s freaking awesome
Quadra is perfection to me. And i would definitely change beneath the remains with arise
I actually got into Sepultura earlier this year and was going through all their albums up to Roots. Roots was my first ever nu metal album and it's still my favorite in the genre, and my favorite Sepultura album. Arise is a close second for me though. Based tier list tbh.
Out of the Derek Green era, I've only heard Against and I really, really didn't like it. I plan on checking out more of it and I hope I'll enjoy at least one of the Derek Green albums.
Against isn’t a good album to judge or kick off the Derrick green era on imo. I feel A-Lex and Quadra represent that era a lot better.
Edit: also I got into Sepultura this year as well. Used to think they were eh, but I really enjoy the Max albums a lot now. Based that Roots was your first Nu Metal album mate
G'day from the land downunder. Cheers for the vid and the opinions put forward. Love ya work and a band for the ages no doubt. But can ya rate the songs lad?
For instance...
1) Born Stubborn.
2) Born Stubborn.
3) All the others.
Long live Spatutulia (it's what me missus calls 'em for some reason)!!!
Hey fun fact I re-listened those Sepultura albums last week and I have enjoy roots also especially when I first heard those songs from roots I thought it was good I don't find to be great but I think it's good I know you weren't a sepultura fan to begin with but you enjoying roots sense you like Nu metal wish I personally love Nu metal and Alternative metal.
Roots is so good. Glad you enjoy it man.
Sad dramatic events led up to Max leaving the band so I can't blame the fandom for being polarized. I picked up Beneath the Renains before Arise I am that old. Realistically it was the first and only record yet available to us. My only criticism of lists like this is they lack context of what was going on at the time. These early records were the breath of fresh air I needed in a stale scene. Long Live Cavalera Conspiracy and Soulfly!
To me, Sepultura perfected their initial sound and peaked with 'Arise'; one of the best metal albums of all time. While I still really like 'Chaos A.D.', the watering down of their original sound with groove metal and hardcore influences was the beginning of end of my relationship with Sepultura. I actually initially liked 'Roots' when it came out, but time has been cruel to it in my ears, and now I just cannot listen to it without cringing... My interest in Sepultura died completely after 'Roots'...
1. 'Arise'
2. 'Beneath the Remains'
3. 'Schizophrenia'
4. 'Chaos A.D.'
5. 'Morbid Visions'
I prefer the Max albums personally, but love roots. Derrick Green has some underrated material too, but I view that era of the band as its own thing.
I feel some type of way about Roots. I haven't decided if it's genius or fucking horrible, I know that statement doesn't make sense, but that's how i feel. Also I was super hype to see Schizophrenia as your top pick. This album is CRIMINALLY underrated. It kinda just seems like it hasn't gotten a lot of exposure. People's go to for early Sepultura is Beneath and people who are just fans in general tend to pick Roots or Chaos AD
Schizophrenia is a banger album
Against is criminally underrated record..
Great list even though I pretty much stopped listening to Sepultura after Roots. Yes, I'm one of those guys who just doesn't care for that album, but I respect what Max was trying to do at the time. I still think Beneath the Remains is still my favorite but I was introduced to them back in the 80's when I bought Morbid Visions on vinyl just because I loved the album cover 😎🤘🍻
I reckon Roots is the best followed by Beneath the Remains. The first 6 with Max are definitely the best.
The Max albums are definitely my favorite too, but Derrick has some gems with his tenure in the band.
@@doomguyrox1156 That's true. Dante is a great album.
Here's something controversial: I stopped after Chaos A.D. but I like a couple tracks on Roots and Arise is my favorite. I tried later to see what they sound like but naaah, not for me.
I can't argue with your rankings, mine would be similar. I lost interest after Nation. Quadra was a great return to form. Be interested to see you throw Max and Iggor's Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions re-records in here...unofficially.
They'd be pretty high
I know you meant that for Trenches, but I’d personally have them A. It’s tied with the OG version imo.
Except for the roots, which I find extremely bad, I hear everything from the top 2, Perfection and Fantastic. Good choice made.
Beneath the Remains is their best album. Against and Nation are underrated, and I wasn't a big fan of Dante and never listened to anything after that album.
Very interesting ranking. I have to hard-disagree with Morbid Visions. The Re-recorded Cavalera version does it justice, but man, there's a point where atmosphere and "energy" can't justify bad production and sloppy playing.
Let's compare Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions. Both have pretty raw production and sloppy playing, but I think Bestial utilizes raw production to its advantage and makes the band sound hungry (in a good sense). On the other hand, Visions' production overshadows the "atmosphere" of it. I'd draw similar parallels between Transylvanian Hunger (good raw) and Under A Funeral Moon (bad raw).
I respect your opinion, though and still love these types of tier lists!
I should think I've listened to Beneath The Remains through 200 times.
Yes to the Schizophrenia love! My fav Sepultura album for sure.
Schizophrenia is so dang good man
I own everything up to roots. Then I started listening to soulfly. I HATE how the death and black metal scene HATES Nu-metal. There was so much gold throughout the 2000s. Definitely annoying to be considered less of a fan of the more extreme metal, just because I enjoy Nu metal. But hey 🤷♂️
I clicked on this right away to say ARISE is the best Sepultura record by far.
Roots is the album I listen to least from Sepultura. For me everything else they've done is WAY above it. Derrick era Sepultura may be the most underrated shit ever.
Glad we can finally agree on something. ROOTS IS GOATED!!!!! 😎🤘🖤☠️💯🔥🎸
My ranking would probably be:
1. Arise
2. Beneath the Remains
3. Chaos A.D.
4. Quadra
5. Schizophrenia
6. Machine Messiah
7. Mediator
8. Roots
9. Dante
10. Morbid Visions
11. Kairos
12. Roorback
13. A-Lex
14. Nation
15. Against
Great list. I really appreciate the love for Schizophrenia, one of the most underrated thrash records of all time.
S: Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains, Morbid Visions, Arise
A: Chaos A.D.
B: Quadra, Machine Messiah
C: Kairos, Dante XXI
D: A-Lex, The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart
E: Roorback
F: Roots, Against, Nation
Roots f tier might actually be racist 😭😭😭
@@ithaanmuhammad7908or, you know, its an opinion
Roots is my favorite album, I went towards soulfly and never went back. 😂
As a Brazillian, I obviously love and respect Sepultura - they are a national treasure. But I don't think I've cared for more than 3 or 4 songs from the "Derek era". Sepultura was Max's baby, his vision. He was the songwriter, the creative genius. After he left, Andreas decided to lead the band and, well, even though he's become a much more proficient guitarrist through the years (from a technical perspective), he's always been a mediocre songwriter. "A-Lex", to me, is an aberration. "Quadra" has, indeed, a few good riffs, but I'd rather hear Soulfly or Cavalera Conspiracy any day of the week.
Morbid Visions was NOT their first album. Their first album was Bestial Devastation, released in 1985.
That was an EP
Finally someone who appreciates the first two albums. People are way too dismissive of them just cuz theyre rough recordings but that's a huge part of the charm. You can hear how hungry they were right out the gate.
Can't stand roots tho lol
Schizophrenia is my favorite, but roots is dang close
I think you need to listen to Quadra some more. its in top 3 for me together with roots and beneath the remains.
Maybe
I think Nation should be higher on this list. It has some great riffs and grooves.
Arise always be my favorite album from Sepultura it's like the peak of they music
Never got interested in Sepultura until their last album Quadra released. Can't believe I got interested in Sepultura to late.. I mean I've listened to them beforehand but didn't really care. Roots blood roots for example but Quadra made me more interested
I've tried but really can't get into anything after Arise.
I can't praise you enough putting Schizophrenia at the top. It's been a favorite for a longggg time
I never got in to the Derrick stuff . But to be fair I never listened to an album all the way through , just 2 or 3 tracks off each and it just didn't compel me to dive deeper . Nothing against Derrick his vocals are good . The songs I heard just didnt grab me .
My top 3
1 Arise
2 Chaos A.D.
3 Beneath The Remains
4 is Roots of course
