Ride the Lightning and Peace Sells are my top 2 favorite albums of all time. And that's for any genre. Both massively important to me and my metal journey. I don't think Peace Sells gets credit for how dark it is. Everyone hears the title track and thinks the entire album is just politics, but it's actually the opposite. Lyrics about murder, death, black magic, spells and hexes, cheating, and Russian roulette. Lyrically it's almost as dark as an album as Show no Mercy and Hell Awaits but just not quite as explicit and not going for the shock value that Slayer was obviously going for. Lots of great riffs and jazzy groovy moments like on Bad Omen. To me it's perfection in my opinion. Also just wanna shoutout Sacred Reich just saw them a couple nights ago and they put on a great show! The American Way is a classic🤘 love these videos keep it up!
A great thrash band I’d recommend is Demolition Hammer, they only have 3 albums, but their second one, Epidemic of Violence is one of the heaviest thrash albums i’ve ever heard Great list
@@Chicky_Lumpsthe vocals are great. What kind of vocals do you think would work better with this heavy ass album? Heavy instrumentation need menacing vocals.
@@taomahNEGEV South of Heaven is great but the vocal performance is questionable. Hell Awaits is Tom’s vocals and the instrumentation is more Death metaly than others which pertains to my taste.
Survive and Oppressing the Masses are Perfection-level in my opinion; two of my favorite albums that helped broaden my metal horizons beyond just the Big 4 back in high school.
I’m a self professed thrash connoisseur and if you want to hear one of the very best thrash bands going today, check out Angelus Apatrida out of Spain. These guys worship at the altar of the almighty riff.
I was disappointed at your Overkill comparison to Dio there. In Union We Stand I can see why, but most of the songs rage many times harder. I would not be putting Deny the Cross, Overkill II: The Nightmare Continues, Wrecking Crew, or Electro-Violence anywhere close to Dio. Not saying you have to like the album, but that was a massive disservice to the album's intensity and thrash leaning.
Excellent video. Again, not seeing eye to eye on some of your rankings but you make pretty fair comments about why you rank them the way you do! Excellent job!
Ahhh this was a cool refresh on the great ones from my formative years when I first really was getting into music. It was certainly a great time in the mid to late 80s for this stuff. Funny is that I do hold dear a couple of the ones you put in bottom tier but likely for different reasons as I was also big into punk and hardcore at the same time and skateboarding and all that good stuff. Cheers, please keep these going!
Finally someone that likes Pleasures Of The Flesh. I love this album, imo it's Exodus' most underrated album. Seeds Of Hate, the title track and Chemi-Kill are 10/10
Definitely my favorite Exodus album, and also happens to be my first which might influence my opinion of them. Had a low quality cassette copy back in the 80's, and at that point I didn't have a lot of thrash to listen to aside from the big 4, so this one got a lot of listens.
Just recently getting more into thrash and these videos are a great way to discover more! If you like aggressive thrash, I highly recommend Solstice! Their s/t debut and sophomore album Pray are death thrash masterpieces!
@@MetalTrenches Keep it up my man! I forgot to add they have ties with Malevolent Creation and Cannibal Corpse, to give you a little taste of what they're like (still very much thrash though 😇)

I’m a 50yo dude, but full disclosure, I impulse fist-pumped when you put Spreading The Disease at Perfection. I’m a huge can of Taking over. It’s not my favorite Overkill album but it’s up there. They mix thrash and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal perfectly, and tracks like Deny the Cross, Wrecking Crew, Fatal if Swallowed, and Electro- violence are all Killer. Also u got some slower ones like Fear His Name and Use your head are also good as well.
Awesome list. Wish Sacrifice was included. Arguably the most prolific Canadian Thrash band ever. "Forward To Termination" would rank high on my list of sophomore efforts.
You confused producer Lester Claypool, with Les Claypool of Primus. He didn't produce Suicidal Tendencies Join the Army. Lester did. Two different people. Common mistake.
Lol, quite funny that in Lester's Bio in Metallum there is a Trivia note specifically saying "not to be confused with Les Claypool". However, Les was actually part of the scene back then with the band Blind Illusion in parallel with the first Primus' signs of life. He played the bass for the Blind Illusion's record The Sane Asylum which is a hidden gem and a masterpiece in the very congested late 80s thrash scene.
I'm so happy you said you feel mixed about Peace Sells, it seems it's one of those albums that everyone loves, but i just don't feel it, outside of a few songs. I feel like most Megadeth albums are better than Peace Sells, yet a lot of people say it's their best and even compare it to Ride The Lightning, which makes sense because both are their second albums but it's just not on the level of RTL. If RTL is a complete masterpiece, Peace is like a 7 to me. Also, good video to discover some bands i didn't knew
Excellent! One of your best series ever I hope to see a #3 I’d rank Peace Sells, Never Neverland and No Place for Disgrace higher but I know it’s all subjective I was a wee teenager in the mid/late 80s listening to most of these bands
I disagree with Annihilator, it’s good album. It’s Alice in hell part 2 but the singing is better. It’s a hard one between neverland n Alice. But I do lean more to Neverland. Also Peace Sells is a perfect album except the cover song. Why? Great job mask guy!!
After writing and composing 95% of the material for Schizophrenia, lead guitarist Jairo Guedz decided to leave the band before finishing it. Kissers proper debut was Beneath the Remains.
Subjective being subjective, personally Persecution Mania is Fantastic for me and Hell Awaits is frankly just 'okay'. Of the early Slayer stuff from Show No Mercy to Seasons Hell Awaits is by far the worst and I rate it below a lot of their later stuff too. Just feels like its missing something. Love seeing Sadus get love, I love their discography and DiGeorgio is an absolute animal. And New Order is my favorite Testament album, true perfection.
Hell Awaits is the best slayer album and one of the greatest thrash albums of all time. It’s their most progressive effort with lots of technical flair, but what really makes it stand out is the atmosphere. It has more death metal leanings than thrash when it comes to the instrumentation and it served as a template for future extreme metal acts. Its a pivotal release which you just don’t understand the significance of. A noob thrasher you are.
Pleasures of the flesh is definitely my favorite Exodus album, too bad it doesn't get much love. It's in my top 3 favorite albums ever, brain dead is one of the greatest songs of all time.
You missed off English thrashers Xentrix ... again! Otherwise great videos, really enjoy them, and agree with 90% of your opinions, love the dark thrash, like early Kreator and early Sepultura
The New Order all the way. He'll Awaits slams too of course. As Above So Below by Forced Entry is one of my faves, love the big production, riffs, vocals, everything about it. They always remind for some reason if Jason Newsted was lead vocalist (especially with their loud bass tone which I also love). Too underrated band \m/
First of all, thanks for continuing down the thrash alley. I have a ton of disagreements, but needless to say I appreciate To Mega Therion a lot more than you. A lot! Same goes for Persecution Mania. And Never, Neverland. Hell Awaits is criminally slept on and is easily perfection in my book. I could go on but what's the point? LOL. Thanks again for your contribution!
Here would be my ranking of all these thrash metal sophomore albums: S - Sadus - Swallowed in Black, Annihilator - Never Neverland, Kreator - Pleasure to Kill, Dark Angel - Darkness Descends, Destruction - Eternal Devastation, Toxik - Think This, Heathen - Victims of Deception, Slayer - Hell Awaits, Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion, Testament - The New Order, Coroner - Punishment for Decadence, Metallica - Ride the Lightning A - Razor - Evil Invaders, Artillery - Terror Squad, Exodus - Pleasures of the Flesh, Sodom - Persecution Mania, Overkill - Taking Over, Anthrax - Spreading the Disease, Nuclear Assault - Survive, Venom - Black Metal, Forbidden - Twisted into Form, Flotsam & Jetsam - No Place for Disgrace, Megadeth - Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?, Vio-Lence - Oppressing the Masses B - Sacred Reich - The American Way, Sepultura - Schizophrenia, D.R.I. - Dealing with It!, Suicidal Tendencies - Join the Army, Voivod - Rrroooaaarrr, Possessed - Beyond the Gates, Death Angel - Frolic Through the Park C - Tankard - Chemical Invasion
Think This by Toxik has always been one my favorites so it might make perfection for me. I'd put Persecution Mania and Twisted Into Form much higher but other than that great list man!
Interesting choices. Never Neverland, Peace Sells, Persecution Mania, and Victims of Deception are perfection for me with The New Order, Megatherion and Ride the Lightning in fantastic, soo many great albums though also Dreamweaver by Sabbat is pretty monstrous
There's a belgian thrash metal band called evil invaders, named after the razor album, maybe a band you could check out, they got 80s 90s style thrash metal
This was a really cool list. I will say I never realized just how much you disliked heavy metal style vocals till this tier list lol. I have some albums near the bottom of your list near the top of mine. This was a really fun list to do. Plus a lot of the albums were big growers on me, like some I just completely ignored until going through all these albums and some really were great to me. I had Death Angel low too, but I like it more than my initial listen, i appreciate the experimentation even if it didn't work that well. Sacred Reich was another grower on me, I used to dislike the first 2 (haven't relistened to the debut yet, will soon) but after relistening to the sophomore album, it really grew on me, its slower yeah, but I thought it was still a great album. Anyway great list and thanks for sharing it and plus the link too, I really did have a fun time relistening to all the albums and even listening to some for the first time. But I gotta know though, is diabolical better than eternal devastation lol. I'm not sure if it is or isn't, I like both a lot. I think with more convincing I prefer diabolical because that album is just so fun. Eternal devastation has an atmosphere I like that I wish would appear more on destructions albums, but i think if im feeling destruction, ill put on diabolical probably.
Gotta give Death angel credit for trying. They hit a much more "normal" sound in the 2000+ albums. The 3rd album was the borderline theater performance style album if I remember right. I really love their 2009 and 2019 albums though
@@kranberryjones1449 yeah act 3 was the next one, not a big fan of it, but I did like it, was interesting, just that there's way more records i enjoyed more than it. One day wanna go through their discog because last time i checked them out I was on their 5th album
Great ranking!! I can see how tough this must have been. Glad to see Exodus' second so high! Underappreciated IMO, I love that one. Again, the only band missing is Whiplash.
I always find the opinions of younger Metal fans interesting. You seem to look at the music in a different way, obviously comparing it to newer music out today. What you have to understand is when these releases came out the sound was different from anything else. Thrash Metal was an infant in music terms. Brand new, aggressive and far more exciting than any other genre at the time. Bands were still trying to develop the sounds that would define the genre. Which is why we had so many variations in sound. Nowadays there are so many cookie cutter bands it’s ridiculous. (I know there are some great modern bands that kick ass!) I’m talking in general, it’s not like the 80’s. Those were the days of METAL.🤘🏼
I get that and frankly I’m 37 so I’m not THAT young, but obviously I wasn’t right there listening to this stuff when it came out. I can only speak from my own perspective. I deeply respect most music but I still feel like in many ways some albums become dated while others don’t. And yes there are plenty of cookie cutter bands out there, but if you know where to look metal is more wild and fresh than ever.
For me, I dug John Connelly's vocals. They were, to me, if Sam Kinison fronted a speed metal band. Breaks my heart to see so many of my faves (Suicidal, Nuclear Assault, Forbidden) so low! But still love your content!
Great ranking! All the big ones on the top! I would rank Sodom and Destruction at fantastic! Love the German Thrash Metal Bands!! Hope for a third Album ranking round to come!! 💀🤘💀🤘💀🤘
Oh boy, we are fans of the same genre of metal, but still have such a different taste, its hilarious! I wanted to watch the video until the end before complaining, but Nuclear Assault in the lowest tier??? John Connellys Vocals are freakin amazing, to me it sounds like two guys in white cloaks could show up at any minute, put him in a strayjacket and tear him down the stage while he continues to shout into the mic. Absolutely loving it. Also Darkness Descends was 1986, not 1988, and is an obvious S-Tier. Enough with the complaints, I still highly enjoy this video and try to be tolerate to different opinions :D (...even though I am already scared about what you will say about "Opressing the Masses")
Like your list, but I'm on the opposite of the vocals. I tend to lean more to the Metal style. I do have to disagree with ya on Oppressing the Masses album. Not saying it's better than the first. I think they stepped their game up on this album.
You're ranking Black Metal against albums by bands who mostly owe their existence to it, so the judgment is unfair. But i will say you have a great knowledge of thrash.
Over it is a good list, although I'd put Annihilator's Never, Never Land a lot higher. Songs like The Fun Palace, Stone Wall, In Command, Imperilled Eyes are awesome. Also the guitar work is just incredible.
I agree with all of the rankings except Victims of Deception and Twisted Into Form which I think are fantastic albums but to me The New Order I don't know something feels missing it's not as strong as The Legacy when I first heard I was like this is fantastic but after a few more listens it kinda feels weak maybe I need to listen to it more
Never Neverland is perfection and superior to their debut imo. Also Darkness Descends is perfection, other then thay go listen to demolition hammer and atrophy now. Both very underrated D.H. has 3 albums, i believe atrophy only has 2.
I think the only one of your rankings I have a problem with is Sodom, but I see the case for the ones you did. Nice take. I wanted to note “There Stood the Fence” by Toxik is possibly one of the most emotionally engaging power ballads by a Thrash Band.
Mostly agreed on the list but please check again never neverland, that one is perfection no doubt, every note put in the right place Cheers and great video/,,/
Yeah, I agree, but British thrash is never on the list of many Americans on UA-cam, I don't know why, though maybe they weren't marketed well in the US?
@@baldyhead quite probably. I play drums in the reformed Slammer and from what I understand WEA wanted us to be the next tallica and put us on tour with Yingwie Malmsteen and other such bands that we didn’t match up to. Didn’t even bother to get us on any US tours. It’s a very strange one dude. As a fan - I just don’t get why they were never promoted stateside much.

Great list. I reckon anyone complaining needs to appreciate that reviewing 32 albums in one video is quite a lot of work
Thanks and CORRECT
I love Frolic Through The Park
One of my favorite Thrash Hood Classics
You’ve shocked me with Overkill & Nuclear Assault barely beating out that unlistenable DRI tub of shit but hey…do what ya gotta do.
Different strokes...
Agreed, Razor got absolutely feral on evil invaders.
Darkness Descends actually came out in 86’ but this list is solid
Second albums by Sacrifice, Mortal Sin and Englands Sabbat are all brilliant.
You’re good at what you do, I now have the bug to visit/revisit a lot of this stuff.
\m/
I see it isn't listed, but have you heard Forward to Termination by Sacrifice?
Schizophrenia is an absolute masterpiece
Great ranking!! I can see how tough this must have been. Glad to see Exodus' second so high! Underappreciated IMO, I love that one. Again, the only band missing is Whiplash.
This was a really fun one. If this does anywhere as well as the last one, I'll go on to third albums
@@MetalTrenches Hopefully! It's a lot of work, but you can't beat classic thrash!
Top 5 for me:
1. Ride The Lightning
2. Punishment For Decadence
3. Peace Sells
4. Never, Neverland
5. Think This
Honestly, despite your lower placement of the album, this video has sparked my curiosity about Tankard (whom I'd never heard before)
They're fun
Sam Kinison! 😂
Metallica is tough to fuck with in this category
Nice ranking
Bang on with Punishment for Decadence.
Great video. I'm embarrassed by how many of these I've never heard before. Or heard of...
Just gives you more stuff to check out. I wasn't familiar with a bunch of these either.
No Demolition Hammer?
You're ranking Black Metal against albums by bands who mostly owe their existence to it, so the judgment is unfair.
But i will say you have a great knowledge of thrash.
Over it is a good list, although I'd put Annihilator's Never, Never Land a lot higher. Songs like The Fun Palace, Stone Wall, In Command, Imperilled Eyes are awesome. Also the guitar work is just incredible.
I agree with all of the rankings except Victims of Deception and Twisted Into Form which I think are fantastic albums but to me The New Order I don't know something feels missing it's not as strong as The Legacy when I first heard I was like this is fantastic but after a few more listens it kinda feels weak maybe I need to listen to it more
Inquisition Symphony one of the best thrash instrumentals
Never Neverland is perfection and superior to their debut imo. Also Darkness Descends is perfection, other then thay go listen to demolition hammer and atrophy now. Both very underrated D.H. has 3 albums, i believe atrophy only has 2.
I want to get into thrash metal outside of the big four, any album suggestions??
I actually just did a list on that recently
@@MetalTrenches I'll be sure to check it out
Think this, twisted into form, oppressing the masses, peace sells and lightning are my favorites
And survive
I think the only one of your rankings I have a problem with is Sodom, but I see the case for the ones you did. Nice take.
I wanted to note “There Stood the Fence” by Toxik is possibly one of the most emotionally engaging power ballads by a Thrash Band.
Schizophrenia is SOOOO fast I always forget until I relisten to it
You’ve said before that early Sepultura bores you, so what makes you put Schizophrenia at perfection?
Opinions change
Forced Entry - As Above, So Below, needs to be in more peoples ear holes. Wicked album!
Damn wish demo’s album was on here
Mostly agreed on the list but please check again never neverland, that one is perfection no doubt, every note put in the right place
Cheers and great video/,,/
Onslaught - The Force is missing
Indeed. It’s a total riff-fest and their best, easily.
Thoughts on MetalChurch?
I need to dig into them more.
Awesome video. really contributed to my good day :) ty
Some amazing albums on here but missing the second albums by all top 5 UK thrash bands? (Onslaught/Sabbat/Xentrix/Slammer/Acid Reign)
Comon! 🤘
I agree with your overall #1 choice Ride the Lightning!
I love your choices but man Overkill rules bro!
I like their next few albums much more
Stone (Finland) released a monster of a sophomore album with No Anesthesia.
hey man, check out Demolition Hammer sophomore album if you like Morbid Saint
I’m surprised that S.O.D.’s second album (“Bigger Than the Devil”) isn’t on the list, despite being in the debut list. Plus, no Carnivore?
I ruled out anything that was out way after the other stuff
I was just wondering what your opinion of bands like Texas hippie coalition and Jorn was?
Several of these hurt to see where u put them but im very happy you're giving anthrax love but Im salty about where u put Death Angel
It would be dull if we all liked the same stuff
Peace Sells is ... in the middle? But, yeah, Ride the Lightening definitely top shelf.
You need to add Devastation; their sophomore album “Idolatry”, is an absolute classic.
Agree hands down there’s nothing that comes close to RTL, just a perfect album 🤘
MOP?
RTL>>>>MOP
@@Metallicafan.kirkhammet I meant when it comes to the rest of the albums on this list, but yeah RTL & AJFA > MOP
@@Metallicafan.kirkhammet nothing against MOP, I love that album, But those two are just better overall to me
Glad to see anthrax get some respect, they are so underrated 🤘
So true are you into death metal
@@JohnWayne-vf5bs I like some death metal not huge fan, I’m in a band and our bassist that’s his favorite sub genre so I’ve gotten to know more stuff and I’m starting to open up more to it, I use to think all death metal was the same but it’s definitely not haha
@@hank35682 so well what was the band that got you into thrash metal
Monotheist rules! Thanks for mentioning it!
Finally you appreciate Anthrax!!!
Great video Man keep up with the great work do think if you grown up with thrash metal would of you hated nu metal
It's possible, but I can never truly know.
@@MetalTrenches yeah your videos are so awesome what made you want to do UA-cam
I grew up on Thrash and still loved Nu Metal. I really enjoy most metal with the exception of super slow stuff like Drone, Funeral Doom or the raw sound of Raw Black Metal.
@@wadethesladewilson6753 is they metal band that you think should of been more bigger
