Not needed whatsoever. 😄 There is nothing wrong with the original, it’s a beloved classic for good reason. That said, I get why they’re doing it, and I’m glad they aren’t ruining it (moderning it up) too much
I remember listening to this album in Junior High always loved Arise so much better but this is definitely a thrash classic glad the Max and Igor are finally getting to re-record their old material
Sepultura was the first band I heard that really got me drawn into the genre when I was 12 years old. I bought Chaos A.D with my savings and a CD player, after that Roots. In the meantime I discovered Pantera, Fear Factory, Machine Head, Slayer and Biohazard. But Sepultura I remembered really being heartbroken when they split. Still to this day those bands and the bands that came just after up until beginning of 2000's are really near and dear to me.
They did an AMAZING job with the Morbid/Devastation duo. They also sounded great with their Morbid Devastation tour! Saw them in Tilburg 🤘🏻Can't wait for this 3rd re-recording
Yeah I have always thought those drums sounded interesting as well Rob! Love Max and Igor but I love Sepultura 2.0 as well. Andreas, Paulo, and Derek have done well carrying the torch. New cover art is a bad ass upgrade!

Hell yeah, Rob! Been hoping and waiting for this one ever since I heard they re-did Bestial and Morbid. Never cared for those two records much, bar the couple of songs they include in their live sets. But Schizophrenia I love all the way through. Solid material but man... the recording lol. Not as bad as the previous two which sounded like they were recorded in a garbage can but yeah, those toms.. to me I can only describe them as sounding "pock-y" Anyway, so glad they're re-recording it. Can't wait to hear it! Beneath was for sure a big step up in production but still not as slick as Arise. I wouldn't be mad with a re-do of Beneath tbh. It had this subtle airy-ness or reverby-ness that can be a little fatiguing on the ears during a full album playthrough. It could benefit from slightly more in-your-face-ness imo. Arise, defo does not need to be touched. That album is perfection!
Blown away by the rerecordings and my Quadra guitar. Love your Sepultura related videos because I'm a huge fan of Sep. Maybe try to recreate their guitar sounds or show us your favorite riffs. Max is always open for an online interview...
You're so right about splitted Metallica comparison, that's exactly it. Btw, about the strange sound of toms which you mentioned - look at their new clip for "Escape To The Void" and pay attention to Igor's drum kit. He uses so called "roto toms" and I'm sure that he used them back in 1987 as well.
Thanks for talking about this! I had no idea the Cavalera brothers were doing this. I'm really looking forward to it. This album has lots of sick riffs, but I never listened to it much because of the crappy production.
Am looking forward to the release of the re-recording of "Schizophrenia" too. Favorite song from that album is "Troops of Doom". Would love to hear Metallica re-record "St Anger".
Inquisition symphony must be the greatest song in metal if sounds like the 2 previous Cavalera albums. And yes, I agree with u bout the drummer stuff, I actually emulated as a teenager when I first hear it, the sound with a couple of shoe boxes hahahaha
Actually the Tom Tom sound is identical to recordings from cogumelo record bands in the mid 80s. Albums from bands like holocausto, Vulcano, chakal, mutilator, sarcofago in the mid 80s also has the same sound. Kudos to cavalera brothers for retaining that sound for their rerecording of Schizophrenia materials. I am actually waiting for Inquisition Symphony. Greetings from Malaysia.
Spot on analogy in the beginning regarding Metallica and sepultura. Loved the review and all the fan interaction here on YT, recently got into chimaira 🤘
It’s ALWAYS awesome when Rob puts out a video 👍 I’m not the biggest Sep fan but I really dig Max’s guitar ESP LTD Max-200 RPR Max Cavalera Guitar So many points. So metal. So cooooool. ❤❤❤
Agree 100% Pumped for this one. My fave Sep album - so aggressive and so many chunky riffs. Can't wait to hear To The Wall. Then there's Inquisitoin Symphony, Rest In Pain etc. It's gonna be jacked. First 2 tracks already released have delivered. If I could have chosen ANY of their albums to get this trearment, it would have been this one.
I saw them a few years ago playing stuff off Beneath and Arise at my local metal bar and it was fantastic. Max seems so happy when he’s playing and it makes the vibe of the show so good. Under a Pale Grey Sky is still one of the best live albums ever too.
Songwriting/recording is an organic process. At times tunes are committed to master tapes while not fully matured or developed. There could be limitations in technology, production budget, technical abilities of a young group and in hindsight it becomes more obvious how an album should have been done differently- knowing what they know now. I can understand if they wish to get it right and I'm sure it'll sound great.
Yes the toms have a really distinct sound to them & I have no idea how anyone never noticed it. That’s always been part of the appeal of the original recording. Another element that was a lot less noticeable was the echoing of Max’s vocals (sorry I don’t know the technical term). I noticed that effect mostly through headphones. On the re-recorded tracks that echoing is a lot more noticeable & Igor’s toms still have that same sound just a little more subtle. Schizophrenia has always been my favorite Sepultura album & Beneath The Remains a close 2nd. I’ve always been curious what Schizophrenia would sound like if the production was cleaned up a bit… I can’t wait to sit and listen to a new yet an old classic.
great video Rob, agree 100% on everything. i think the re-record is almost perfect, maybe a little too much reverb on the vox ? I'm trying to learn escape to void on guitar, the main riff is killing my hand, haha.
Touching Beneath is just wrong f that same with Arise ...leave it alone it's classic didn't even need to do Schizophrenia either but touching Beneath The Remains is sacrosanct...
I first heard Escape to the void from under siege live in Barcelona back in the 90s and it has become one of my favourite Sepultura songs and this new version is even better
Oh! We were so close to finally solving the mystery of the Marimba Tom fills that we’ve been hearing for the past 34 years. Yeah, that’s how long I’ve been wondering about those Tom fills. They are unique and cool sounding for sure. It’s definitely a signature sound of Igor’s on that album, at least to me. Much like those signature REMO ROTO TOMS on Possessed albums. Might have to hear it from the horses mouth and get the info from Igor himself. It would be sweet if you could interview Igor C. Killer video Rob. Can’t wait to hear this album.
Hi Rob, love your videos, and the incredible passion for so many awesome metal albums. Looking forward to this also, but I’m in the opinion of that as music fans we are lucky to have both the original and new versions of Sepultura. The last 4 new Sepultura albums are absolutely amazing, of course hard to compete with the original and nostalgic original albums but grateful to have them both. Machine Messiah is so so good. You are right about the old drum sounds being so unique and original, love em all! Cheers from Australia, hope to see Chimaira down under 🤘
I can talk about Sepultura all day, any day. Well at least the Cavalera brothers version. No disrespect to the Andreas and the boys. Max and Igor are pioneers. Legends. Beneath the Remains was my introduction many moons ago. I was hooked. I guess I never really heard those chimey drums on Schizophrenia. Igor was and is such a beast of a player. Great content Professor. Nice hoodie by the way. HMOE!!!
Interested to hear your take Rob. I think it's fucking great because in all honestly i never really gave anything before Beneath The Remains much of a chance because they sounded so shitty lol but now getting to hear them like this makes me appreciate the tunes. So basically they are new albums for me. So rad.
Hey Rob have you had a chance to listen to it now that it's out and if so what did you think? I always thought of this as the first Sepultura album since Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions were basically unlistenable in my opinion and know exactly what you mean about Igor's drums. Maybe they're roto toms? Side note I'm happy for you and the Chimaira crew and hope you guys can make it to Florida again someday
Yo dude! So I think it rocks! I love it! I totally agree with you about BD and MV. And about the drums, while I guess they could be roto toms, what I'm hearing sounds different. As I said, it's more of a xylophone or marimba sound in my opinion. If you read through the comments, TONS of guys have commented saying they're roto toms, as if they're aficionados on the subject... And I have to wonder, "how many of these guys saying this, have actually been in a room with roto toms?"🤔 I have, and they don't sound like what I'm hearing on this album! I hope to eventually make it back down to rock some Florida stages again one day! 🤘
I was so hung up on the hight pitch sound from the toms back in the day, and still nowadays it´s like I wait till those fills come. so cool you also have the same experience with it! I don´t know if you ever noticed that it´s the same on beneath the remains, only way further back in the mix. for instance on stronger than hate, on the fill around 3:10 mark, you can hear it quite well.
honestly can't tell if I prefer the original or the new one, which is exceptional since I've listened to the original all my life. Also you're right about the toms indeed, they always caught my attention with that unique resonance or wtf you'd call it.
Morbid and Beastial definitely needed a retouching. According to Max they didn't even know how to tune their guitars when they made those records lol, they were like 15-16 at the time making them.
Haha, yeah, it’s weird. I think of both iterations of sepultura as legitimate, but completely different bands. I guess I more prominently think of Max as being from Soulfly. That’s one of my favorite concert memories was being front center at the second stage at Ozfest STL for Soulfly. I’m stoked to hear the re-recording.
Oh dude, the amount of times I tried to explain the high pitch coming from the Toms on that album to people. I recall eventually getting through to someone when I said to them "you hear that echo? that sounds like the echo when a basketball bounces?". They turned and said "oh yeah I can hear that, that's the high pitch you're talking about?". "YES!!!... that's what I'm talking about" 😂
It always reminded me a little more of a kickball, but more people probably understand the sound a basketball makes, so your way probably has more explanatory power.
Wasn't the cleveland boy, the voice of sepultura for longer than max? TBF it is going down morbid angel/I am Morbid territory at this stage or new order/peter hook and the light. Some of the duel line ups work some of them dont.
The drums you talk about are called roto toms. Just the drum heads without a shell below it. Not having the shells gives it a higher pitch. Possessed used them too. Hell, many bands in the 80's used roto toms. I found you by accident under my recommendations. Subscribed.
Hard agree. The best metal bands have always evolved over the albums. None of them sound the same. I look at Max as a god among men. I saw Soulfly a few years back in a small club and he is just a force
It’s funny because I am the same way, sepultura to me is the band with max and Igor. My buddy got into them recently and he likes them with Andreas and his crew. It may depend on when you get into them
The marimba sound is phase issues when the tom mics gate in and out, the whistle or marimba sound is weird resonances that are introduced when the tom channels are opened. IMO
The Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions re-recordings were pretty cool. I wasn't expecting to hear that they're re-recording Schizophrenia. I wonder if they're going to re-record all the Max era albums.
As you asked around the 7:00 mark I noticed exactly what you're talking about. For instance on Escape to Void I heard it start in right about the 50 second mark of the track. While Igor was doing a tomb roll. My only guess is because of their limited budget and recording quality back in 1987 that's just how it turned out (being my best guess). When you Said "Sepultura is rerecording Schizophrenia" I instantly thought you meant Andreas and Paulo, Derek Green and Eloy's Sepultura which I never loved until Kairos and I have to say they been killing it the past 14 years with the past 4 albums. Ntm great job with Quadra where they rerecorded Sepultura classics. That being said I grew up with Sepultura as you did. First and final time seeing Sepultura was Ozzfest 1996 a month before Max said ✌️ anyway my Heavy Metal Brethren I'm stoked for the Max and Igor releasing this bad boy..it's gonna be sick.
Has Chimaira ever considered re-recording Pass Out of Existence with Ben Schigel to get a more raw sounding album? I know I saw comments in the past where it was noted the album had a very “polished” sound. Or maybe it’s one of those things where that was done at a point in time and there is no reason to go back and re-visit that time period.
It's interesting to hear you're not so much a fan of pre "Schizophrenia" material. I would have to agree with you - they definitly took things to a new level once Andreas joined the band and started writing with them from "Schizophrenia" onwards. I'm such a fan of the tom roll sound on this album too - I had never heard anything like that before and had always wondered how intentional it was or if it was a happy accident like recording "Morbid Visions" without the knowledge of tuning their guitars haha.
With Sepultura's demise on the other side, perhaps they're anticipating a potential battle for copyright. Re-recording the albums is probably the only way for the Cavalera brothers to get their rights back? Will they continue with “Beneath the remains”, “Arise”? What do you think?
This was a fairly big album for me. Not quite Beneath the Remains. The drums to me sounded like a cheap set with heads warn and strips of duct tape. It added to the rawness. I remember reading years ago that he started on a home made kit. They came from literally nothing. I was a massive Igor fan. I am blown away at how well they captured the essence of that album in this re-recording. Very happy they have done this. It brings me back and reignites my excitement that first time hearing it as a kid.
Your a true Seps fan Rob, i seen them twice on the Arise tour when I was 16, the second time Andrea's was recovering from a broken arm and came on stage with a steell pin in his right arm, bad ass, I know what you mean about the tom drums, that's a good example of how a great album can surpass bad production, Morbid Visions re re- record was killer, Schizo will sound the same I have no doubt, loved the instrumental Inquistion symphony, I could talk all day about seps, what's the Jackson like to play, I see it has just the humbucker, you like it?
Right on! I could talk Sep all day too! The Andreas Kisser Soloist is fantastic man! Feels, plays, and looks great. The single 81 design is right up my alley. Check out my unboxing video if you'd like to hear and see more! ua-cam.com/video/cXgYYeFV72I/v-deo.html
I will say i recommend listening to quadra, their ladt album is seen as very progressive and alot of new and old fans lovs it. Their new drummerr eloy song writin helped shape the band
It sounds excellent, mostly. I listened to it yesterday. The effects went too far on Max’s vocals for my taste. Overall, they certainly did it some major justice.
I remember when I first this album I was like this is much better than Morbid visions. That was to Death metal for me and I could of been better. The drums on Schizoprenia albums does sound a little weird. I seen the video to escape to void and Max's voice sounds a lot different . But you can hear that drums and the guitar solo is much different from what Andreas did. One song that I hope that stays the same is Troops of doom.
The reason that Metallica exemple (heard many times) does not work is that Igor did record 4 albums under the Sepultura moniker without Max, plus Max's guitar playing is not tight enough to redo the Schizophrenia material vs Jaymz who could probably redo everything properly, in the studio. I've been a Max-fan for over 30 years and this new re-recording is the first time that I am actually not stoked about a new musical release from him. You can already the hear in the singles that some riffs that should be muted are not etc.... It was great to hear Morbid Visions and Bestial Devastation played properly with a great sound but this is pushing it too far because Andreas was a big part of the upgraded songwriting on that album and this new version just won't cut it, guitar-playing wise. These new cover artworks are pretty killer indeed though!!
Great perspective Rob, personally I completely agree that the brothers established the blueprint and vision for the band and were the heartbeat. Quality material has followed with great musicians. But on balance it also should be put on the record that Max and Iggor are scenesters. I remember the red hair and jumping up and down in baggy shorts (jumpdafuckup) with guitars tuned to B when Max became obsessed with Korn and Kisser at the time stated he didn't want to tune that low and didn't like the change in musical direction. Now they have decided to put on the spikes and bullet belts again and appeal to the black/death metal crowd. Inconsistency and scene/trend jumping is the worst form of poserism. History and the fullness of time will allow the metal world to judge them accordingly.
The funny thing is that Chimaira had achieved perfection in sound for Impossibility of Reason and (thankfully) never evolved in production or sound. Atleast i can't hear any differences other than when Talley was on drums vs Andols on em... mind you i haven't really heard the album that had only Mark on it.
Glad they re-recorded the stuff before Schizophrenia because I did not like the production of the original material. On Schizophrenia I really like the production so I will not care much for the re-recording
Couldnt get behind "Sepultura" when Max left, because the new singer didnt have the same agression and guttural voice and do not fit the old songs at all. Always like Soulfly, Nailbomb, Killer be Killed, Go Ahead and Die is really good to but the albums that the Cavalera's did when they got back together, are simply great!

A true Sepultura reunion tour would be YUUUUUUGE! Make it a Pantera/Sepultura arena tour and it's gonna be a giant money maker.
No Pantera, thanks. Pantera died when Dime died.
Sir your optimism is out of control!

100% bro! And cheers to Stockholm! I'd love to make it back one day! 🍻
Been waiting for this re recording of it since the last 2 records.
As far as I know, they are high pitch tones from rototoms, inspired by Kreator, Sodom and Possessed at that time.

Thanks for talking about this! I had no idea the Cavalera brothers were doing this. I'm really looking forward to it. This album has lots of sick riffs, but I never listened to it much because of the crappy production.
They have already done Morbid Visions and Bestial Devastation and they sound sick bro check them out. This one completes the trilogy.
New artwork is intense! 👌🏻
New Escape to the Void sounds killer, exciting times!
I get what you're saying about the marimba sound. Puzzling for sure
This album taught me how to heavy. Can't wait for the remake.
I remembered they played this live during Morbid Devastation Tour and I said they gonna rerecord the Schizophrenia album. Now its manifested. :)
Am looking forward to the release of the re-recording of "Schizophrenia" too. Favorite song from that album is "Troops of Doom". Would love to hear Metallica re-record "St Anger".
St. Anger is definitely an album worthy of a re-recording!
Inquisition symphony must be the greatest song in metal if sounds like the 2 previous Cavalera albums. And yes, I agree with u bout the drummer stuff, I actually emulated as a teenager when I first hear it, the sound with a couple of shoe boxes hahahaha
I agree 110%....on all your points.
Greetings to Malaysia! Been there a handful of times, but never outside the airport! 🤘🤣
@@RobArnoldWorld lol for transit ? BTW I released my thoughts on the re-recording too, feel free to drop by.
Max and Igor are Sepultura !! Like the last Chimaira album wasn’t Chimaira. Yes I went there 😂
Spot on analogy in the beginning regarding Metallica and sepultura. Loved the review and all the fan interaction here on YT, recently got into chimaira 🤘
Hey welcome aboard bro!🤘
It’s ALWAYS awesome when Rob puts out a video 👍
I’m not the biggest Sep fan but I really dig Max’s guitar
ESP LTD Max-200 RPR Max Cavalera Guitar
So many points. So metal. So cooooool.
❤❤❤
I’m so excited!!!
Agree 100%
Pumped for this one.
7:09 I also noticed on kreator’s pleasure to kill song with the toms having the similar unique sounds to it.
He used rototoms
👊
I hear it on the tom's, as well. Marimba-type or gated effect. Thanks for the video, Rob. I'm jazzed, as well. I always appreciate your positive vibe.
Really looking forward to the re-recordings of Beneath the Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D., and Roots.
lol they aren't going to touch those ones.
@@Shawner1000 Just you wait. Get your JNCOs ready for when Roots (Re-recorded) drops!
🤘🤣 @Voorhees_Metal_Productions
Man, I'd love to sit down and chat with Igor! He's definitely one of my all time favorite drummers!
Cheers from Australia, hope to see Chimaira down under 🤘
I hear you bro! I'm glad the band continued on as well, rather than ceasing to exist completely.
Thanks for tuning in, and cheers to Australia!🤘
I can talk about Sepultura all day, any day. Well at least the Cavalera brothers version. No disrespect to the Andreas and the boys. Max and Igor are pioneers. Legends. Beneath the Remains was my introduction many moons ago. I was hooked. I guess I never really heard those chimey drums on Schizophrenia. Igor was and is such a beast of a player. Great content Professor. Nice hoodie by the way. HMOE!!!
Same bro, and agreed 100%! HMOE!🤘
Yup I could also hear the "marimba" drums in that record for ages, I thought it was just Sepultura being latinos and using some latin drums 🤣
Well brazilians are not exactly latinos if you go deep into that
The very first album to feature andreas
Interested to hear your take Rob. I think it's fucking great because in all honestly i never really gave anything before Beneath The Remains much of a chance because they sounded so shitty lol but now getting to hear them like this makes me appreciate the tunes. So basically they are new albums for me. So rad.
No doubt!
And I have to wonder, "how many of these guys saying this, have actually been in a room with roto toms?"🤔
I have, and they don't sound like what I'm hearing on this album!
Dude TOTALLY! I just listened to that section of Stronger Than Hate, and you're right! 💯
honestly can't tell if I prefer the original or the new one, which is exceptional since I've listened to the original all my life. Also you're right about the toms indeed, they always caught my attention with that unique resonance or wtf you'd call it.
Morbid and Beastial definitely needed a retouching. According to Max they didn't even know how to tune their guitars when they made those records lol, they were like 15-16 at the time making them.
Stoked on the Cavaleras re-doing this. Igor uses roto-toms or did, I think thats what we are hearing.
Oh yeah, marimba toms))) Always heard it and loved it. Sounds very fitting, imho. It gives that sinister tribal vibe, i think.
Max is definitely Sepultura. I haven't listened to them since he left.
The quality definitely tanked but Kairos and Quadra are really good albums.
Last 4 albums really worth listening to, just think of it as a different band which it is, but really awesome metal nonetheless
That's your loss my friend
@@Greg-rv5vm Saw them live post-Max, wasn’t the same energy.
@@rolandjuhasz3405 Indeed..the mediator has some also death metal vibes
It's cool to hear your opinion about this great album.🤘
🤘
Cant wait to hear From the Past Comes the Storms and The Wall
100%!
The Cavalera brothers are on fire with these re-recordings! Can’t wait 🤘🏻
The drums you talk about are called roto toms. Just the drum heads without a shell below it. Not having the shells gives it a higher pitch.
Possessed used them too. Hell, many bands in the 80's used roto toms.
I found you by accident under my recommendations.
Subscribed.
Hey welcome aboard!🤘
Hard agree. The best metal bands have always evolved over the albums. None of them sound the same. I look at Max as a god among men. I saw Soulfly a few years back in a small club and he is just a force
I loved the new versions but I wish if they have kept the fast guitar picks instead simplifying it
It’s funny because I am the same way, sepultura to me is the band with max and Igor. My buddy got into them recently and he likes them with Andreas and his crew. It may depend on when you get into them
🤘🏻💀hope they throw it on vinyl 👊🏻
It didnt needed to BE done
I totally agree with you 👍
I called it last year when they released Bestial Devastation & Morbid Visions.
Caught Max and Igor in Sydney a few years back. It was an amazing show. Shame they had a falling out with Marc Rizzo as he is a monster on lead.
I agree!
We've certainly toyed with the idea here and there, but I doubt it will ever actually happen.
Ha! I didn't know that about Morbid Visions/tuning! 🎸
With Sepultura's demise on the other side, perhaps they're anticipating a potential battle for copyright. Re-recording the albums is probably the only way for the Cavalera brothers to get their rights back? Will they continue with “Beneath the remains”, “Arise”? What do you think?
That could be! My guess is that they will not continue to re-record any of the albums that followed Schizophrenia. But I guess only time will tell!
HELL YEAH
The biggest evolution in extreme metal was the impact you had on Six Feet Under. Unbelievable when I first heard it.
👊
Awesome will do, your guitar collection is off the planet bro👌

The last three Sepultura albums are fire!!! Eloy on drums killing it
Thanks!
I appreciate you brother! 👊🙏🎸🤘
Ive seen somewhere someone saying the toms were roto toms.
I will say i recommend listening to quadra, their ladt album is seen as very progressive and alot of new and old fans lovs it. Their new drummerr eloy song writin helped shape the band
Damn. I forgot RR used to be Roadracer Records \m/
My only complaint is that my guy Mike Leon isn't part of the rerecording project. 😕
I def can hear how the 87 version toms sound pitched but i can't hear that Marimba thing.
It sounds excellent, mostly. I listened to it yesterday. The effects went too far on Max’s vocals for my taste. Overall, they certainly did it some major justice.
Totally hear something weird going on with those toms.
Psyched that they re-recorded this album.
Where it is troops of doom?
I’ve always felt the same, Max and Igor are the sound of Sepultura.
Sounded like wood blocks to me over those toms.. but ya there's something there for sure
Rob, it’s the ROTO TOMS!!!! Just like Kreator “Pleasure To Kill” and pretty much all 80s trash, especially German and South American death/thrash.
I liked it too man, at least for what it was. But now, at least in my opinion, it sounds so much better! I recommend giving it a chance!
Maximum knowledge dispelled, listen to this video for great perspectives on the legends Max and Igor by the contemporary mastermind Rob Arnold.
👊
Couldnt get behind "Sepultura" when Max left, because the new singer didnt have the same agression and guttural voice and do not fit the old songs at all. Always like Soulfly, Nailbomb, Killer be Killed, Go Ahead and Die is really good to but the albums that the Cavalera's did when they got back together, are simply great!
