I never thought an opinion could be wrong. Then I started watching these tier lists
I lost count of the number of bad takes in this vid
Dusty saying if we agree we'll be done in 20... then I notice it's a 2hr video 😎
Time stamp is spoilers 😜
Lumie: “YOU’RE JUST AN OWL” 😂
Something that might change your opinion on typhlosion neck flames. Typhlosion is based on honey badgers who have some of the thickest necks in nature. Their back is so thick that no predator can penetrate which is why badgers are able to fend of packs of lions. The flames represent that characteristic which I think supports the design… also in what world is dunsparce a better design than typhlosion?? 😂😂
Have been eagerly waiting for this episode, I love these videos. Really looking forward to the Hoenn episode
Johto also is very nostalgic to me. I started in Gen 1(yeah, I know, I'm old) and my first game was Pokemon Blue. I was also part of Pokemania which was incredible. So when Gen 2 was released and we got 100 new Pokemon, a new region to explore and all that good stuff, I was ecstatic. While I love the other gens and the new Pokemon, Gen 1 and Gen 2 will always hold a special place in my heart.
For a while, Gen 3 was the one I liked the least, not because I hated it, but that was when I took a break from Pokemon, as I was a teenager and thought I was too cool for Pokemon. But I eventually returned at the tail end of Gen 7. I decided to familiarize myself with the past Gens, watch the Anime and play the games, as I was getting ready for them to be introduced in Pokemon GO which I played at the time as well as Let's GO.
And while I like Gen 3 as much as I like the other gens now, It'll always be the generation where I left Pokemon for a time.
Spinarak above Crocanaw is a travesty. That caveman look is iconic, and I always thought it fit the evolution line because the pokemon becomes more feral as it evolves. Totodile is a little gentleman, Crocanaw is a caveman, and then we just get a feral beast.
Croconaw always looked weird to me as a kid, like it had a diaper on
I think we should get something like a legit in-game baby pokemon league. Maybe some gyms that only allow baby pokemon in, maybe some battle facilities.
Typhlosion's TCG art alone should put him in A. They go hard.
I LOVE Chinchou because it's the very Johto pokemon. Imagine you sit on the shore of some lake, it's late evening, behind you are a couple beautiful asian houses, it's so warm, you hear the sounds of nature, and than a bunch of Chinchows come from the water. It would be so beautiful and calming! S Tier for shure!
2:20 Skarmory and Gligar aren't actually post-game since can be caught in Route 45 accessible through Dark Cave and Blackthorn so really just late main game
9:35 I always thought Fortress evolved from a Metal Coat as I missed the Johto episode where Brock's Pineco evolved
Would learn later that wasn't the case during a rewatch
I just ADORE Bellossom. Yeah, I dropped it from my playthrough team cos it's got no level-up moves, but as a concept I LOVE this little girlish dancer thing, I think it's hella cute and is another one of those Johto pokemon like Hoppip and Chinchow that are good just as decoration, and don't have to be strong.
Scizor is so cool that they made a whole different Pokemon just from its claws in the immediate next generation - that pokemon being Trapinch.
Valid. Both Pokemon are great.
Even though I joined Pokémon in the late 2015, I still remember how I watching anime did that smooth transition from Gen 1 to Gen 2, and how Umbreon and Espeon felt like new pokemon to me. I was like: What?! This is your vision of a Psychic Eeveelution?! For some reason I never thought much about Eeveelutions, my opinion of them have always been close to what community thinks about the elemental monkeys, like, gimmicky at best, but Espeon and Umbreon had kinda felt "premium" to me... until, of course, I discovered Sylveon. Now they're like 7 plebians and the Snow White.
Another great upload gentlemen, appreciate the content! Best thing to listen to when I’m at work ✔️
Our pleasure! Have a great shift!

Are we not gonna talk about how the dex for Xatu says it's from Mexico??
I know nostalgia plays a major role in it, but Johto is my favorite region. The way the map plays is incredible, I know the major complaints about leveling issues are legit but the way you can back track to find new places and areas where pokemon are hidden. Finding lapras in the cave, searching out the patch of grass that has xatu, it all just felt good to me as a kid and when I replayed it on the 3DS it still felt good to play. I think an updated version closer to gen 8 than gen 9 would be ideal to me. Or let's go Johto but I don't think anyone wants that besides me.
Quadrupedal Feraligator is AMAZING.
I also still believe Chikorita's entire movepool needs big buffs and it would benefit from a regional form giving it fairy(or psychic), changing it to a primarily great defense mon with lower base attack and higher special attack to make it a support mon able to use moves like pollen puff and life dew.
Grass/Psychic is an awful typing for a defensive/support Pokémon like Meganium. It's a big part of why Celebii didn't hold up over the years. Grass/Fairy, on the other hand, would be terrific.
I'm curious now, who else wants a modern Johto remake?
Not with what they did with BDSP.
If they took what they did in HGSS and expanded on that, I'd be more open to it.
I swear lol if they don’t keep him in check Dusty will just straight up disregard what they’re saying and place Pokémon where he wants 😂
😏
Not “Lop-ras” 😂😮💨 that hurt to hear
I’m with dusty 😊 love cyndaquil line. Loved the Gen 2 sprites for them. Typhlosion looked very good. They should’ve let him keep his flames like how charizard/emboar/infernape flames are constantly burning.
When I saw Cyndquil and Typlosion in 3D, I didn't even recognize Typlosion at all because it looks so stupid without flames. It's almost like a fusion of Snorlax and Cyndaquil to me.
Don't you think Forretress kinda resembles Cloyster?
And I agree, I LOVE how it looks in Paldea - so futuristic!
Qwilfisch is probably my second favorite Water type, and it used to be my favorite until I rediscovered Gen 1 Gyarados. It's actually good in plathrough at least in HGSS. Cool design, tasty colors
Togetic looks better than Togekiss. At least it's not fat and has distinct body parts
Houndour has always been one of my favorite Pokémon from Gen 2 and always found it so cute. I always used to say our dogs were Houndours because it felt like we then had one ❤️😁
Can we all appreciate how we got such a complex design as Xatu IN GEN 2! Not even Gen 5 or maybe even 7, where it looks like it belongs to
Yes, Johto literally being conceived as "Kanto 1.5",
means that Johto as a region has never had a chance to show off a distinct fauna, to feel like its own region with its own personality (purely in terms of wild POKEMON, not the lore, cause Johto has plenty of culture/history, it makes Kanto look weak in that department).
It was also the last Pokémon game to come out just before the series became set in the "Pokémon world" (tl;dr version of what I mean by this: pre-gen3, Pokemon was more like a gritty and dark sci-fi universe where Pokemon just happened to also exist in it, whereas starting with gen3, the series has a more specific vision and a more refined world and values of the people in it, even all the artworks were remade in a new style that never left since),
where we now have an "idea" and expectation of what a new generation roster of Pokémon typically has to offer. Those expectations didn't exist for Gen2 yet, so it kind of wasn't meant to be a new generation in the sense that we think of new generations now.
So it basically took the existing fauna that was already available from Gen1, and then heavily used the opportunity of new Pokémon for adding obscure and rare Pokémon that are hidden in the most convoluted places (..on trees, at night, in time-based swarms, in unusual methods, specifc fishing spots, by having to breed pkmn, or literally in the post-game, which isn't even IN Johto).
The role of most of the new Pokémon then was more for them to be like an easter egg hunt AFTER the story, rather than focusing on letting you go on an adventure with tons of fresh faces.
And that "approach" has its merits (I'd argue they even re-tried this with Gen-4 and Gen-6 to different extents, and heck, Legends kind of fits this niche as well),
but it does make the whole generation feel dated in hindsight.
Because those Pokémon aren't playground rumors anymore, they're just regular Pokémon now (which IMO made HGSS feel awkward for being too faithful in trying to imitate the originals as if the series hadn't progressed in the meantime lol...though now BDSP makes even HGSS look like a freaking creative masterpiece of a reimagining, which is bizarre....)
All of this, combined with how Legends gave us an unexpected fresh view of Sinnoh, has me hoping that Johto may actually sooner or later get a real chance of being its own region and have its fauna expanded, whether through regional forms, more evolutions, or straight up a batch of entirely new Johto Pokémon!
Oh lol, but god no, I do not want any of the scrapped/unfinished designs to be even remotely used as inspiration for new Pokémon in a Johto revisit.
They're dead and we were never meant to see them.
I'm already dreading the moment when there's new Johto Pokémon and people will be trying to claim they're somehow totally based on beta sprites and making me roll my eyes over and over :'D
4:18
Yeah, I didn't really care for Johto much until I heard the love of the remakes and wanted a copy.
Imagine a wall all covered with Unown images. Dozens of ROUND EYES staring at you! I think it's a perfect design for nuke victims pokemon. And it's cool that they shaped like letters, kinda like "you learn from the tradegy of those victims like you learn alphabet". And also names are sorted in alphabetical order, so there's stone tablets with just 1 letter, like a whole tablet for B with all the names starting with B, whole tablet for S with names starting with S, etc.
The fishing trainer is looking at a Mew in the sky if you look real closely in that Lanturn fan art. The only reason I know is because someone mentioned it in the comments when I first seen it when it was posted a while back
Ever since I used them in Paldea (btw, it was also my first time to use Azumaril; yes, I played 8 out of 9 generations, only skipped 7, and only last year I first time used Azumarill😅) I absolutely love Hoppip line! But I kinda think Skiploom is kinda too large, it doesn't fit with the rest of the family.
I think doing a top 3 before the starters would be interesting for future videos. Like whats your no.1 has to be in S teir
Sunkern is another design that looks foreign in Gen 2. It looks very 3D to me. Maybe not quite gen 6-9, but at least it looks Gen 4. At some point I genuinely believed Sunkern was a later added pre-evolution to Gen 2 Sunflora.
Johto is full of incredible Pokémon. I absolutely LOVED this episode. Also from a girl’s perspective I still agree with most of your opinions (Espeon is top 2 Pokémon for me). Bellosom is such an odd Pokémon to exist, if it was a stand alone Pokémon I’d get it more, but as a kid it confused me so much how it is literally smaller than gloom. I’m also with Soul.. Quilava is so so good. I feel like typhlosions eyes are too small and it’s too chunky for how little it has going on with it. Chikoritas whole line does have my heart, especially after getting a full odds shiny in soulsilver
Farfetch'd and Dodrio line might be connected. It's not that similar to Doduo, but it's hella similar to Dodrio. And they're next to each other in the dex
In arts and anime there are Unown forms that represent Cyrillic letters too
I disagreed with most Pokemon placements, but I agreed with every food take😂
Realizing how much of a Gen II fanboy i am cause like, every other pokemon this time is an immediate A or S from me 😅🫡
I used to feel the same way about bellosom until I found out it got quiver dance, synthesis and baton pass. It has solid enough stats (close to the same BST of a starter) then I looked at it again and saw this little green Hawaiian inspired tiny dancer is actually awesome! It’s move pool is lacking in the attacking department for coverage but if it comes back with the DLC…. Ya know what that means! It’s still gonna be mid yes, but it’ll have the coverage now to sometimes be great!
Damn I won’t stand for the Ho-Oh slander
So many of these rankings are unbelievably bad
1:08:46 I'm replaying HGSS rn and it's so interesting to me that Xatu and Sunflora have basically the same cry and animation...
Remember Tail Whind Prankster Murkrow from early Gen 9 VGC? Yeah, COOL STUFF!
(Forgot 2 Mention)
If there's One Baby Mon I wanted to see since the Beginning... it's Baby Kangaskhan, the Design just Oozes Pre-Evo
Espeon is alright but I’d have it high A, Jolteon looks better. Teddyursa should be A tier, the whole video is yous liking cute Pokémon but you don’t rate Teddy? How’s the sunflower or shuckle higher?
Ever since I started listening to Mr. Hurley & die Pulveraffen I no longer hate monkeys, so I'd say Aipom is one of the better designs, and, just like Xatu, I appreciate this complex tropical design in Johto. It fits better in Hoenn or something.
Sunflora looks like a Meowth in disguise. I think it's intentional
I cant believe you guys put togepi that low
I hate evolutions like Wigglytuf and Azumaril when the pre-evo just gets stretched. I prefer round over egg-shaped.
Truegreen7 is friends wt MandJtv so u should ask Truegreen7
Great gen (2nd best for me), in my view the one with the least amount of Ds and Fs. Many instant classics and the best package of starters on average. Btw, Blissey is my favorite all time lol.
I would always keep my quilava instead of fully evolving it cause I loved the design so much
This isn't about this pod cast. But dusty always talks about redoing the pixel pokemon games, I had I idea that maybe one day pokemon would do. Start the game in the pixel aspect. After you progress a bit you notice the "bad team" had a new invention that turns everything 3d. Or even possibly the other way around. Start the game in 3d and this evil team turns every thing pixel. That would be the best time to bring the beta pokemon into the game.
Scizor is truly the Gengar of Bug mons
cyndaquill is S
I am filout out my Pokemon Home national dex atm, and I must say Johto Pokemon does feel like a Kanto Sequel, Scizor, Steelix, and baby pokemon but they are solid pokemon.
IMO scizor is more of a metallic form of Scyther instead of an evolution, like they have the same base stat total as well
Chikorita is SO cute, especially Ash's, I'll never understand the dislike for its design. Its like a sweet lil pear😔
Edit: Bellossom is SO cute, and for that alone should be higher than C. Daaaamn y'all are harsh today
I liked Bayleef and Chikorita but Meganium just looks like a plant monster to me.
That C tier needs serious reconsideration 😳
Pichu basically closed the door for a possible Gorochu come back, so I hate it.
Cleffas future use of gravity holding it down to F tier
Scizor is peak 🔥🔥 love listening to yalls podcast great listen 🙏🏻
Appreciate you!!
Yes
You guys did Cyndaquil dirty. It's literally the single best first stage starter
I love Christmas 💁🏼♂️
Here's my Top 12 List for All-Time Fave Gen 2 Pokémon:

3. Typhlosion and Feraligatr
4. Donphan Line, Steelix and Crobat
5. Umbreon and Houndoom Line
6. Wooper (+ Paldean Wooper) and Yanma
7. Kingdra and Magby
8. Meganium Line, and Ampharos Line
9. Piloswine Line, Sudowoodo and Slowking (+ Galarian Slowking)
10. Ursaring Line, Aipom, Gligar and Murkrow
11. Togetic Line and Politoed
12. Magcargo Line and Pichu
Solid list!
@@HiddenPowerPodcast Thx!!!, currently watching the Sinnoh Ranking, still got some lists of mine to go... stay tuned ;3
If it had better stat distribution, Shuckle would be my favorite Bug, not Scizor. Shuckle's BST is 505, imagine it with stat distribution of Gen 1 Snorlax except with like 5 Speed and the remaining points going to its Attack. (160/145/65/65/65/5) That's be SO COOL! A little unrealistic though... Maybe it sould've been a great Special Attacker, like the bug with Dragon power inside. Could be awesome
I just have to say that soul is a beautiful man. Thank you. Have a nice day.
Sudowoodo is WONDERFUL
In HGSS Ariados got freakin Shadow Sneak!
I totally agree with Lumi, I LOVE Sudowoodo! Who said pokemon all should be strong? For playthrough, btw, it's actually solid. I'm not disappointed AT ALL with this "Gen 2 Snorlax"
Umown was probably done in English because English only has 26 letters, whereas there are thousands of kanji
Finally, some good fucking content
Steelix in B?
Tf is going on with this list, feels so wrong ngl
Where would you put Steelix?
@@HiddenPowerPodcast definitely S tier, one of the best johto pokemon
@@harshieatsee I would put it C if anywhere. Steelix is fairly divisive it seems, I really don't like it or onix much.
I COMPLETELY DON'T understand Chikorita, I don't understand what it is supposed to be, it looks like a black dummy you see on Bulbapedia that indicates pokemon's body shape.
As for evolutions, I like Meganium better than Bayleaf. Underrated starter for sure. It's not super effective against gyms, but it's hella strong stall-wise
Lumi: "to me the hardest thing to do is to remember that Girafarig is Gen2, not Gen4"
[shameless plug]
Now I wanna see you do gen2 on pkmnquiz 😏
To me Miltank is a top tier design. I like how everyone hates it😂
Noctowl has Giratina brows
I now have to now put Lumi on my shit list after having the hubris to speak that way about Sneasel. That was criminal behavior
I love Johto games! That nostalgia fix 'dough. ❤️🔥😤 Speaking of it, Shiny Gold Sigma is another romhack that I feel y'all would really enjoy. Mega Typhlosion, Feraligator, and Meganium are a thing. Just saying.. lol
Feraligatr is on all fours on the Electric Delta card, also Skeledirge is him fr
About the Unown and the Latin alphabet: Japanese kids learn those in 4th grade so that would be the perfect opening for Pokémon to be "pseudo educational" with the Unown forms 😉
Typhlosion is great don't get me wrong but in my opinion he kind of digresses in evolution it goes from fire mohawk down its back then quilava keeps that mohawk and gets flames around its tail area then typhlosion just stands up gets bigger and has flames around its neck kinda lame of ya really think about it they did him dirty still a good design and still love em❤
Scizor is the G.O.A.T.
Well done gentleman.👏
Yes
My All-Time Favourite Pokémon of Gen 2 are ---
1st Place: Tyranitar Family, Totodile and Elekid
2nd Place: Typhlosion Family, Scizor and Heracross
3rd Place: Feraligatr
Why is Feraligatr in 3rd Place???, while Feraligatr will always (2 me) be an Amazing Design based on a Crocodile, it was in Fact my First All-Time Fave Pokémon of Gen 2 but some reason since the 3DS Era, they gave Feraligatr these weird pectoral muscles that don't look that great on it (Greymon's chest design from Digimon look superior), and was not needed since the beginning and Feraligatr was fine without them, it looking distracting in the Design IMO, Feraligatr since the Original Games and the Anime never had it and was fine without it, Crocodiles don't have Humanoid looking Pectoral muscles, it's weird to me and it's a Shame that SV still gave it that again even have New Pokémon Snap Removed it Completely,
I know, I know, it's a Strange Reason to now dislike a Pokémon Design on but it's how I feel, was completely now a Needed assist to an already Badass Design, because of this, Tyranitar is now my New Fave and Pre-Evo Totodile is Even more Superior now
#BringBackTheButtFlames
finally a petition we can get behind
I adore Crobat for being an unconventional Fly user. I hate simple boring regional birds like Pidgeot or Staraptor, I always try to use Fly on something cool like Aerodactyl, Crobat or even something like Drifblim (not sure it worked, but I considered giving Fly to Drifblim)
Feraligator’s best form in C tier? The one that actually looks the most realistic. Least you gave second form Meganium respect, should be higher than Espeon which is literally just a purple coloured cat
Lanturn and Ledian need evolutions!
"people wanted Skarmory to evolve because of Gliscor"
WRONG WRONG WRONG. Where were these people? I would've been correcting them 2 decades ago reeee
Skarmory and Mantine were 100% no room for doubt the truest counterparts if we've ever seen any (they were both bulky single stage version exclusive Flying type rares found in a single Johto location that have the EXACT SAME base stats but physical/special swapped).
Which is why I've been waiting for Roosteel since Gen-4, the moment Mantyke happened.
If Gligar was a direct counterpart to anything, it was to Delibird, but even that was always a bit awkward (as Delibird always seemed more gimmicky and stand-alone, something between Farfetch'd and Smeargle), and Gamefreak even agrees, as evident by them making Gligar way more of a counterpart to Sneasel when they gave both of them "sharp held items" that evolve them if leveled up while holding at night.
Yessssirrrr new vidski
thought the guy in the middle was m&j vids
Typhlosion, Tyranitar, Toxtricity and Gholdengo (maybe a couple other pokemon too) have what I call a Toxtricity syndrome (can also be called Tyranitar syndrome, Typhlosion syndrome): when a cool design is ruined by silly short legs. Typhlosion has the lightest case, Tyrannitar - probably the worst one.
42:52 Lumi: "Baby Pokemon is a waste of a dex slot"
I literally just dropped my sandwich, because I cannot believe that I just heard this phrase resurface from arguments I had decades ago and have it be used unironically in the year of our lord and savior Cetoddle 2023.
(Sorry if mentioning own content is undesired, but) I made a video of technically questionable quality defending Baby Pokémon like 5 years ago, where I literally use this phrase as a joke in the first 5 seconds 😂
..I know it wasn't such a serious point, but I still feel like elaborating xD
1. There is no "waste of dex slots". It's not like Gamefreak sit in a room one day being like "aw shit, I guess we can't include this cool pseudo legendary, because we need to have Wynaut but only have 94 slots available for absolutely no reason".
They've literally given 6 pokedex numbers to the elemental monkeys, so clearly they're not afraid of increasing the number with things that could easily be forms. And if that's not a good enough example, we are in generation 9 and they've just introduced multiple entire categories of "look-alikes", who get their own Dex-numbers, after people have been speculating that "regional forms" is their way of trying to not make the number go too high. Clearly, it is not a concern.
2. Baby Pokémon CAN play the role of giving you access to an evolutionary line that you may not add to the team by the time you would naturally encounter the evolved form (Magby and Elekid in BW2 are FANTASTIC examples of this). Even in the example Lumi gives of "it still ends up being Lapras", having a Pokémon GROW into a Lapras as part of your adventure can add a lot to their bond for some players. I personally would probably actually use a Lapras on a playthrough for the first time if it had a pre-evolution in the wild halfway through a game. Which is almost its own point: Baby Pokémon can make existing Pokémon feel more fleshed out, it's almost like it gives them more context.
3. Even when it comes to the Baby Pokémon that are weak, have no unique moves and aren't even encountered in the wild; ie their whole role is for you to using breeding to complete the Pokedex; any argument you can come up with for them being unnecessary, there's no shortage of NON-BABY Pokémon that the same arguments apply to; whether it's literally all middle and/or first stages, sort of gimmicky Pokémon, or even just Pokémon that are too weak to do anything other than leech Exp until they evolve, if they evolve at all.
41:36 While Pichu may be a good design for a baby Pikachu, would u rather have it over Gorochu Lumi? Most will pick the lost evo of Raichu. I feel like they didnt scrap it cuz of "game balance", but cuz they're allergic to evolving Pikachu, so they made a baby for it as an alternative.
Absolutely would take Pichu over Gorochu. Love that cutie 😅
-Lumi
@@HiddenPowerPodcast I didnt expect u to reply to a comment from a video that's months old.
Snubble and Stantler should be in high C. Blissey should also be in C or D. Piloswine and Delibird should also be in C. Natu, Xatu, and Sudowoodo should get D. Ho-Oh gets high A, 100%
SNUBBULL/Granbull IS AN S!! Still Love the Video guys!!
Hoppip is the only S-tier in Gen2 tbh 🧐
To me best mid stage is Rhydon. And if we not count Rhydon as being one of those pokemon that received lame Gen 4 evos, than it's either Dottler or Pikachu. Porygon 2 can also count cos Porygon Z wasn't lame.
I'd move misdreveous, granbull, togepi, chicorita, , and bellossom UP and drop marill, sunflora, the entire hoppip line, wobbeffet and aipom DOWN.
