(I'll be doing this with Each Tier for Gen you Guys Rank - I'm gonna simply say my All-Time Favourite Pokémon from their Respective Gen on each Vid): All-Time Favourite Pokémon is Both Slowpoke and Slowbro (+ Their Galarian Forms too because they're Just as Great of Designs)
Slowpoke vs Ponyta is a great example of goofy vs cool and how goofy tends to win. Ponyta is adorable, fast good girl, Slowpoke is a secretly smart slow dude. Slowpoke has become a meme, and Ponyta - not every Pokémon fan will even remember Ponyta line exists! That's why devs make goofy designs: it's risky but it's worth it.
15:50 Younger me would give the Black Glasses to my Blastoise during Leaf Green as an homage to the Squirtle Squad. Would keep Bite on it as well because of this. Would be funny if also ranked the ORAS cosplay Pikachu if so the cap Pikachu 18:24 Next Raid event Steel Terra Blastoise? 19:25 also didn't know about Bulbasaur Poison typing as anime never mentioned it and only started playing with it in Leaf Green
That Poison type is the biggest advantage of Bulbasaur compared to other starters. Like, forget gym match-ups, forget Leech Seed + Toxic combo, this Poison type alone is its's greatest help: you SIMPLY don't get POISONED! In Kanto it happens A LOT: you clear the route, you have enough PP, enough HP on your currently used pokemon - and than some Koffing lands Smoke on it... Yep, you Teleport/Dig to the Pokémon Center... and walk that damn fishing road again and avoid those precious (for Ditto glitch) trainers. With Paralysis you can at least try to brute force through the rest of the route.
My favorite type is Psychic. My original favorite pokemon was Alakazam, even though I always say Mewtwo is my "favorite of all time". Not really all time. Originally Gengar to me was just an "enemy" pokemon, a rival for my precious Alakazam with type advantage, 10 more BST, and just generally a mon that I could not afford to like. But it grew on me a lot in basically every aspect! First, I calculated and concluded that 5 less base Special Attack (back than I wasn't fully into whole SPECIAL thing). Second, I noticed how Gengar's Ghost typing stayed rare and "elite" through Gens 1 and 2. Third, I started low key liking that it managed to be more competitively successful despite having no Special STAB. Fourth, I played competitive Gen 1, and Gengar simply fir in my team better. Alakazam is a beast in playthrough having enough stats to 1-hit destroy everything that doesn't resist and is not Chansey, but in a competitive meta it barely does anything if not cleverly positioned. And, finally, even Gengar's design grew a lot on me. I used to prefer Haunter because it's fierce, but now I appreciate Gengar for being just a guy (btw, Sugimori's favorite design). He's fat just like me (well, not as fat😂) and has a dark black-metal-ish-gothic-esque soul. Even its name is literally Gänger, and I listen to a lot of German music and even made several attempts to learn German (still currently I listen to Italian band Theatres des Vampires - yep, name's in French - a little more than anything German, but that's been for only the last year). At some point I used to like Gengar so much I nearly placed it next to Mewtwo as the only non-legendary pokemon I'd like to have as my ace (not because I'm too good to use "plebian" pokemon, just because Alakazam, the second best thing, is THAT weak, and all those physical pseudo-legs ain't my thing)
Gen 1 Kakuna sprite stopped impressing me right about second Red/Blue playthrough. As for Weedle, I think it's Gen 1's "Monkeydori" or whatever that new DLC mon is called.
What I respect about Gen 1 is each Pokémon felt like it had something in Gen 1. From cards, anime, to tcg and the games themselves like stadium and Snap, I like that everything from niche single stage Pokémon to second stage evolutions felt just as important throughout the Dex. Even though it’s not close to being my favorite, I appreciate that now in retrospect.
I know just one thing about Seaking: when I first saw it in games it did not surprise me. That means I knew about it from the anime. Means it WAS in the anime, maybe just had not much screen time
Since I discovered the podcast a couple weeks ago I have binged through all your episodes and have genuinely loved every one; the connection between you guys is so genuine and it's obvious you are great friends. This one was probably my favourite episodes yet. I love how you judge both objectively and on personal preference/experience. Soul is right.. Ninetales is S tier, absolute stunner. As is Dragonair, if done right I would love a paradox Dragonair type of thing in DLC, although unlikely. Although Lumi was absolutely correct Vaporeon is S TIER. Its HGSS sprite is chefs kiss, fantastic Pokemon.
Thank you so much for watching and even moreso for saying all this. Comments like this definitely boost our love for this show (which is already so great)! You have made my day and week :) hope your week goes great too. Vaporeon fans stay winning!!!
Dugtrio is an example of goofy gen 1 triplet evolution, and because of its absurdness I actually think it's the best of all 3 (it, Magneton, Dodrio), I don't get the hate, and it's also super strong and super usable.
Here's my Top 12 List for All-Time Fave Gen 1 Pokémon: 1. Slowbro Line (+ Galarian Slowpoke and Galarian Slowbro) 2. Charizard Line, Blastoise Line, and Dragonite Line 3. Arcanine Line, Gyarados Line (+ Shiny Gyarados and Shiny Magikarp), Rhydon Line and Snorlax 4. Golem Line, Onix, Electabuzz and Gengar Line 5. Raichu Line (+ Alolan Raichu), Jolteon and Vaporeon 6. Kabutops Line, Nidoking Line, Marowak Line (+ Alolan Marowak) 7. (Honestly) Every Bug-Type Pokémon of Gen 1 8. Mega Aerodactyl, Poliwrath Line, Golduck Line and Magmar 9. Nidoqueen Line and Venusaur Line 10. Golbat Line, Sandslash Line (+ Alolan Sandslash Family) and Alolan Muk Line 11. Alolan Raticate Line, Arbok Line, Galarian Farfetch'd 12. Victreebel Line, Tentacruel Line, Horsea Line and Starmie Line
Rattata is one of the best original pokemon! 1. Early route, you see it a lot, get attached, etc. 2. It's cute 3. It's strong with STAB Normal moves and is relatively speedy 4. In later gens it gives you 1 Speed EV, and Speed is the most valuable, cos you never go wrong with maxing Speed, you may even "outspeed" paralysis 5. Not only it gives you valuable Speed EVs, it doesn't overlevel you much 6. It's a Normal type, means 5 levels above you OHKO it with a move of any type except Ghost As for Raticate it grew a lot on me. But I agree it's a lot worse looking. But also, wasn't it the intent?
1:43:21 Lumiose I’m glad you brought up the Looney Tunes reference, I was afraid someone wouldn’t lol (I’m 23, was a big fan of the Looney Tune reruns) but his name is Gossamer, the heart shaped monster from Looney Tunes
Glad I’m not the only one who sees it! Ahhh. Gossamer! That does sound familiar (unfortunately I only remember the Cartoon Network Looney Tunes show lol. Which I only watched loosely)
Two ideas maybe for the future. 1) have the S tiers you each won't bend on added to the video (maybe by your cameras?) so we can see which Pokémon we're going to get the most passionate debates on. 2) if you're going through every generation... battle of the generations S tiers. Head to head. Tier list of all the S-tiers you've decided on lol. See where they REALLY stand.
I know it's a popular opinion that sprites and artworks are better than 3D models... I ACTUALLY STARTED LIKING SOME POKEMON after seeing them as a 3D model. I almost fell in love with Drowzee when I saw it in SV inhabiting the ruins
Since you were worried about the comments being mad for these Pkmn not being rated high enough, let me just leave this here: I think Charmander looks weirdly bald...
Sometimes the origin is so good it makes the design good, sometimes the design is so bad it makes the origin mean nothing. Anyways, I don't think it's a good idea to judge pokemon solely based on design. Like, stats are not just for competitive players, they are an extention of design. And a design only makes sense in the context of origin of that pokemon.
Weird thing: some pokemon (including all starters except Pikachu) to me are one with their evolutionary forms. Like you won't pick Charmander to let it stay as Charmeleon (even though I too design-wise prefer it over Charizard). But some pokemon, usually the common early route ones, are valuable on their own. Like, Tentacool is a much more significant pokemon than Tentacruel because of all the hate and annoyance. Zubat is also not just Crobat's pre-evo. But some pokemon just NEED to be evolved.
Fun one. Personally far from each of you (Chansey top, followed by Mew and Venusaur, which was designed way earlier than its preevos, while Rapidash, Electabuzz and Magmar are the worst). Overall gen 1 is the 4th in my ranking, after gen 3, 2 and 8. 9th close tough (loved the ruin quartet), it might surpass it with the dlcs.
If you guys really want to do a pod about Pokémon name pronunciations you guys definitely need to get the king of Pokemon name pronunciation, Wolfey Glick
Gen1 is my absolute fav! I grew up with the anime and the movies and it was a ritual watching with my sister as a kid. Ive just recently started playing the games and its made my love for it even better
If you plan on having an episode talking about Arcues, you should ask if Michael from MandJTV want's to join so he can tell you why it's pronounced Arkoos!
I can’t believe Soul would put Gyarados in C tier haha, bro he’s so cool🥹. That is literally my baby, and he looks so great in the Detective Pikachu movie
It’s nice to see my basic butt taste have such a different mindset then you guys. I laughed real hard when Lumio was like “LIKE A DUCK” my only S tier I agree with is Scyther and Mew. Excited to see gen 2
Regional forms are defo not Gen 1…. Generation 1 refers to the first generation of games in particular. Alolan whatever etc is literally not available in the games, what a frankly stupid argument.
Idk, friendshipb evos to me have always been the easiest. I manage to evolve them pretty much immediately after reaching middle stage. I walk a lot, I plan my team in advance so I pick them up early, and I don't let my pokemon faint. Fainting ruins relationships.
“We aren’t basing designs off of their evolutions” “Pidgeotto is just a pidgeot with shorter hair” Also “it’s a Lapras”… what does that even mean???? 😂😂😂
Spearow >>>> Pidgey It has personality! It's screaming rugged mean bird! Like, if you walk into a bird at the start of the game, Spearow is the one that makes you hesitate. ...also it should've been retyped to Dark/Flying in Gen2... but they were too keen on keeping the added types somewhat rare and special....
I find your podcasts addicting to watch, especially these tierlists that Im left saying to myself "It's over already?" by the time I finish viewing the entire video cuz I want it to go on for longer. Can't exactly put my finger on why that is. Maybe it's due to the voices or the personalities being projected here. Even some of your interesting takes r well...interesting to hear I listen to them nonchalantly as I go. (Dialga/Palkia r not the worst box legendaries. That title goes to Zacian/Zamazenta, but that's not to say they're bad. Just relatively unexciting compared to the rest. All of them r good, so it's hard to pick the weakest duo anyway).
Electabuzz is the one that makes me uncomfortable, because it doesn't just looks like a human, it looks like an ugly bald midle-aged man. That's why I have no problem with Jynx but do have problems with Electabuzz and Throh
I was since day 1 too. For me is easy: Kanto pokemons are just the original 150(+1), and using actual generation rules and game stuff. Now, if in gen 3 or other versions there's other regions pokemon IN Kanto, then ok. You could now consider as kantonian pokemon as well. Alolan Ninetales is not kanto if you can't find in kanto. So yes. 151 pokemons, originals.
On Voltorb an Electrode. I think we take Pokémon universe too seriously. It's not like logically interconnected, working UNIVERSE, it's a silly, childish world with silly stories, goofy characters, etc. Pokémon doesn't even has a concrete timeline. Some objectmons are silly and make no sense, and dex entries comtain more b s than any religeous literature out there. Voltorb and Electrode are just pokeballs because it's funny to have an object that acts like a creature, that's what stays behind the idea of mascots - like a talking cereal box or something. It's cool and funny, and if you don't treat Pokémon universe as a potential place to live, you can see the beauty of their designs.
Pokemon wearing clothes is another example of confusing Pokémon world with real working universe. It's not one. Pokemon aren't just animals of their world, they are imaginary creatures with little to no backstory and very little thought behind how they live and have evolved. If you take them as they are without any pre-assumptions, you'll see they actually aren't bad designs. Some pokemon are based on humans, what's wrong with that? Humans are just a species of apes! And humans always use other humans for their personal goals, it's silly that you feel uncomfortable using a slightly human looking pokemon for battles. It's definitely not the worst way of using a human-like pokemon (yes, I'm hinting rule 34)
To me it's actually Zapdos who is the ugly one. It looks like a freakin paper figurin or a kid's drawing. I don't see a rubber chicken in Moltres, I think it's a cool little baby Ho-Oh. I definitely like it a lot!
I've always prefered Hitmonchan's design despite clearly seeing a human in it even back before I started liking human-like pokemon. At least 'chan looks like something. Hitmonlee looks like some shapeless nothing with eyes!
Soul, my manz, I like breast too! 🙏🏾😅 An episode centered around the annunciation of Pokémon and move names would be so much fun to watch. To the top we go.
I've always thought Abra line was partially based on insects. It doesn't look fox to me, it looks mantis And also Kadabra is 100% a "she". Idk about the actual gender ratio, it looks feminine (so as Abra) and its name sound girlish
Never understood the appeal of Pidgey evolutions. Pidgey looks cute, 'otto and 'ot look like fat chiccken that do nothing. They are so UNcool, why everyone likes them?
I'm surprised all three rated Magmar so highly. I always felt like it was the ugliest Pokémon until Gen 8. (Binacle was a very close contender, but Magmar was, in my eyes, the reigning champion of ugly for a long time. Nickit and Boltund put in solid efforts to compete, but I think Toxel is the one to finally dethrone Magmar for the title of ugliest 'mon. Edit: Wait, totally forgot about Baxcalibur. Nope; that sweeps the competition. Baxcalibur wins the title of ugliest Pokémon with no contest. It is not even close.) Regardless, Magmar is still solidly an F-tier for me.
YOU STU PID YOU PUT JYNX IN F TIER, DI 3 YOU MO THERF U KCER!!! Jokes aside, Jynx is a solid design, it's scary, it's mysterious, it's the first "waifu", it's controversial (I love that😂), and it's really strong in Gen 1, I'd say it's the best Mewtwo check cos it resists two of its most common attacking moves and can status it in return. To me it's A+ tier. Right now it's probably my second favorite Gen 1 pokemon after Mewtwo, my only S tier mon.
This episode was so much fun. Johto is next 😈

Black glasses bite was the best combo! Also worked with Sceptile and pursuit in Gen 3

Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Caterpie, Metapod, Butterfree, Clefairy, Clefable, Jigglypuff, Wigglytuff, Poliwrath, Golbat, Hypno, Staryu, Starmi, Diglet, Dugtrio, Tangela, Voltorb, Electrode, Magnemite, Magneton, Grimer, Muk, Zapdos, Moltres
F tier (trash):
Mr. Mime, Jynx
I agree that Kakuna should be in S tier, lol. Such a cool design 🙏🏽😅
Please never have SS tier
It’s nice to see my basic butt taste have such a different mindset then you guys. I laughed real hard when Lumio was like “LIKE A DUCK” my only S tier I agree with is Scyther and Mew. Excited to see gen 2
Regional forms are defo not Gen 1….
Generation 1 refers to the first generation of games in particular. Alolan whatever etc is literally not available in the games, what a frankly stupid argument.
You lost me the second you put Squirtle in B tier
Let the record show I said S tier
Thanks Lumi
Idk, friendshipb evos to me have always been the easiest. I manage to evolve them pretty much immediately after reaching middle stage. I walk a lot, I plan my team in advance so I pick them up early, and I don't let my pokemon faint. Fainting ruins relationships.
“We aren’t basing designs off of their evolutions”
“Pidgeotto is just a pidgeot with shorter hair”
Also “it’s a Lapras”… what does that even mean???? 😂😂😂
Spearow >>>> Pidgey
It has personality! It's screaming rugged mean bird!
Like, if you walk into a bird at the start of the game, Spearow is the one that makes you hesitate.
...also it should've been retyped to Dark/Flying in Gen2... but they were too keen on keeping the added types somewhat rare and special....
this is such a messy tier list 🤣🤣
To me it's actually Poliwhirl the calmer Poliwrath
Electabuzz is the one that makes me uncomfortable, because it doesn't just looks like a human, it looks like an ugly bald midle-aged man. That's why I have no problem with Jynx but do have problems with Electabuzz and Throh
I was since day 1 too.
For me is easy:
Kanto pokemons are just the original 150(+1), and using actual generation rules and game stuff.
Soul is right. Dragonite is straight F tier. Draganair was perfect and they slayed the poor thing for that dope.
1:58:40 I would like that
I've always prefered Hitmonchan's design despite clearly seeing a human in it even back before I started liking human-like pokemon.
It doesn't look fox to me, it looks mantis
And also Kadabra is 100% a "she".
It is not even close.)
Regardless, Magmar is still solidly an F-tier for me.
its all about the original art, its original intent
Soulsilver art ur a smart man Sandslash S tier easy
>Pidgeot in S tier
I have it in F tier, ngl.
You are ridiculous
Ditto is the ultimate waifu
Brown is my favorite color, so 🤷
Fakemon artists might do better goo pokemon designs but they all copy the origonal Grimer and Muk
"Hitmontop should not exist"
Excuse me????
Dusty said what he meant
