I love the gen 7 games. Alola is a beautiful region. These games brought us the concept of regional variants... it's just sad that these games were getting trashed over and over again.
I have no idea why really. They also have objectively the best and most well written characters and the story is top for a pokemon game.
@@brachialplexus100 most of their criticisms begin with the games being "hand-holdy" and that ruins it for them. agree, alola has a lot of good characters and good story as well.

Gen 3 and Gen 4 will always be my favorites and I started with Gen 1.
I agreed with everything except diamond and pearl and platinum. And omega ruby, alpha sapphire. I think BW2 is A tier, DP is A tier and Platinum S tier. I mean it was the first time they introduced deep concepts in Pokémon like time and space and different realities. Capture the flag underground and the distortion world is to this day probably one of my favorite things in Pokémon ever. I did start with diamond and pearl, but then I went back to play emerald and leafgreen. Also, I think ORAS should be S tier. And ultra SM should be S tier. And SWSH should be B or C tier. It’s very interesting the reason why Pokémon probably does things differently All the time is because everyone kind of wants something different. going forward they should just add more options instead of taking them away and they could still do things differently while keeping all the old options.
Not putting emerald in S tier is a crime.

XY were the first games you can change your skin color and outfit as well. XY introduced so many new features.
X and Y introducing Character creation was the best feature along with changing your clothes to.
Diamond and Pearl are my favorite Pokémon main line game. But I also lean on Black and white as the best
34 year old here, and a Pokémon fan unabashedly. A bit “disappointed” that these guys seem fairly skewed by nostalgia or sometimes, comments seem completely unfamiliar with some of the series. Ranking Pokémon Gen 1 higher than a C tier is clearly based off nostalgia, in my opinion. Interesting video nonetheless
I think the issue is that they never really settled on what criteria they were ranking them by. At some point they said it was by the time they came out, at another point they said that that is not a fair way to do it.
Ranking games across time will always be difficult depending on whether you judge by what you want to play today versus the context they were released in. Gen 1 could either be at the top or the bottom depending on that.
true but they are just voting based on how much they like them and nostalgia is an important factor in how you enjoy something you've experienced before that you can't really separate yourself from
It’s not fair to judge these games against each other across several decades when the first games were limited by their hardware at the time
@@MireVale true but if you are ranking them on a tier list you should pit them against eachother. it doesn't matter if it's fair or not, you rank what is best highest and what is worst lowest. if you want to rank things by how good they are for their time then that is a whole other discussion in my opinion

Pretty sad to see the Lets Go games rated so harshly, in a completely unobjective way (bar Dustygogoat!)..
Revisiting them as a 27 year old and playing them with my nephews was a blast. The ease of access, and child-friendly mechanics made it an amazing way for a new generation of kids to fall in love with Pokémon just the way I did.
I feel this is *innovation*, and for what it was designed to do and set out to achieve it was perfect. I'd personally rate it quite highly, in say B or even A tier. Not all games need to be hardcore to be good.
This episode made me feel so good inside and brought back a lot of good memories. Crystal was my first game so Gen 2 will always be S tier for me. Still remember going to buy it second hand after finding an ad in the newspaper for it with the transparent GBC. Time flies 🤧
what i liked about lgpe is that you can make any pokemon op with candies
I started with Yellow so I never had to debate which starter to choose until Crystal. Having all three starters on one team is a great deal.
Argument for let's go Pikachu and Eevee, just as how Red/Blue weren't that good but are still important, they're the same. This game will be a generations Red and Blue
Yo the Tangle livestream was awesome! I totally forgot about that. I love their step towards realism with their marketing in the newer gens
I've only played Gen 8 and 9 so I can't give my options on the other games but I hope I get to play them someday.
I don't understand why everyone likes jerk rivals. I get you feel bad not letting them fulfill their dream of becoming a champion, but I also don't like the very idea of having to deal with aggressive and rude person.
The best rival situation for me was in XY when one of your rivals is actually your girlfriend, the two dudes both do their own thing, and the annoying girl is your actual rival. I think that was perfect! Shauna is the best rival for me!
Gen 3 was my most played game as a kid. I never had a DS, so I picked Pokémon back up after the switch came out
As someone who plays Gen 1 regularly I'd say RB are absolute S Tier games.
1. Respect the classics
2. Completing the Dex is doable
3. Very good and consistant difficulty with some ability to choose between what gyms to do first
4. Glitches are actually an advantage cos there's very few game crashing bugs and a lot of beneficial tricks
5. Mewtwo is great in Gen 1!
Having platinum and emerald not in s tier and in the same tier as ultra sun and moon is crazy the only two games that should be in A tier is black and white everything thing else that’s not already in S tier should be in in tiers below it maybe with the exception of crystal in A tier
Silver/Gold will forever be S-tier in my heart :')
HG/SS are absolutely S-tier.
Pearl/Diamond atrocious slow text speed was HORRIFYING. I down grade it majorly on that alone. I never finished past the 2nd or 3rd gym.
Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald had some great Mons and additions but also added a few of the worst designed mons...like spinda... Emeralds gameplay stood a head above the others overall though.
Emerald is A-tier for sure.
I tried Black/White and finished the first 1 but the mon designs were all over the place and I didn't feel as attached to it. Cryogonal? the elemental monkeys... so many pokemon just killed the vibe at times. Never played Sun/Moon.

you guys should have done two separate tier lists. one for how good they were at the time and another for how they hold up now
BDSP is just a remaster with worse features (friendship, a difficulty spiking, competitive league, nerfed bases). It's the World of Warcraft 3: Reforged of Pokemon.

Weather was actually added in Gen 2. Yes, it wasn't used much, but, believe me! I tried to use Rain Dance + Thunder Porygon in Crystal
Reducing features or Dex size is not necessarilly bad, it actually gives an opportunity to play a more compact meta in which unexpected pokemon might shine. I actually prefer it Let's Go / SwSh way than USUM where you had acces to every possible mon and mechanic.
About SwSh
1. I actually like its more realistic plot: you don't just go to gyms because you can, you participate in a league chasing your dream of becoming a champion, you don't fignt actual criminals until you're ready, Champion doesn't just sit in the building waiting for you, and Chairman Rose's goals were actually understandable, not some philosophic bee ess.
2. It's a small lovely world that feels like one big family because everuone is related to someone, it's very alive, the friendship is very realistic, and also Marnie is hella cute!
3. I actually prefer Team Yell over real villans. I like how they're not actual bad people.
I haven't played much GS, but I played a lot of Crystal. I like it over HGSS for little touches like the space for taking off shoues in houses (Japanese thing), being able to check reflection, and my favorite one - Pokégear doesn't work in caves like a real cell phone wouldn't😍
oras, legends, hgss, platinum are my s tiers I can always play them without getting bored. sv with dlc is a strong contender for s it just feels wrong to put it next to the goats. p.s never played gen 5 but I hear b2w2 is amazing
fire red was first my game pokemon game also got me into pokemon and found my copy outside in the middle the street when i was a kid and lucky it worked 😂

I LOVE SKY BATTLES! The only thing I didn't like is that Psychic pokemon are not allowed, even though in one of the games some NPC asked you to bring something from a top shelf and you had to have either Flying or Psychic pokemon, which confirms all Psychic types can levitate, even though they don't get Levitate ability benefits.
I’ve only played R/B/Y, G/S/C, R/S/E, FR/LG, then absent since GBA era until Switch era with LGPE, BDSP, Sw/Sh, PLA and S/V. I never played any DS or 3DS games, but I’ve watched some play throughs
I believe SM & USUM do suffer from replay ability issues but they both do offer different experiences.
SM is a more story-based game if you are someone who is looking for a great story you would like this one more. The characters get developed significantly more and you get a better introduction to the region. If you prefer more hands-on gameplay then you would prefer USUM. If you played SM then the gameplay of USUM becomes even better. There are a few times when Gamefreak switches some of the Totems because they knew you would prepare ahead of time. Random Trainers also have fully maxed out pokemon and every boss has fully maxed pokemon.
In terms of ranking for me SM & USUM both go in S tier with Emerald.
When I decided to play which Hoenn game, it was super hard to choose between regular RS (don't even remember which specific version) and Emerald. Emerald introduced a couple cool little touches like the Battle Frontier, but I was like "I'm not going to stay long in Gen 3, I'm gonna play Gen 4 next...". And you know what made me settle on Emerald? In RS Latios's IVs are 0 because of the glitch. The thing is I don't like Hoenn pokemon. Gardevoir is probably the only one that I TRULLY like, not just deslike the least. And Latios (specifically) is up there close to Gardevoir. Like, I'm not gonna play this whole game and not get what's like the only decent legendary in it (ok, ok, Groudon is cool too)
I did the same restarting and replaying games over and over but the one i replayed the most was gen 4. Its not my favourite though, i think my fave is 3 or 2 but i love all of them so i cant decide.
I'm always a little baffled by the assertion that Sword and Shield have a weak story compared to other games... I do think there are poor aspects (like Rose's plan not making sense) but there are a good number of character arcs within the main story. Bede has a jerk rival arc culminating in being screwed over by the villain and being redeemed as a gym leader, we have a Champion who is unknowingly working with a villain, your friendly rival is the Champion's brother who undergoes a confidence crisis which manifests in his team changing repeatedly, and you're friends with Sonia who becomes a full-fledged professor. So while the overarching plot leaves a lot to be desired in terms of logic, I'd argue it's one of the best games in the franchise for fleshing out its characters and giving them full narrative arcs. The best aspects of the characters in SV follow on from the pattern set by the SS characters.
Kanto carries Johto way too much. The Pokemon variety is trash, the story is recycled. The games are super easy (well the originals at least). What other reason can people use to say that Johto is the best BESIDES having two regions? And kanto in those games were boring.
Let us all agree....all people will put the gen they start playing in the S tier

Not me. I started from the beginning with Blue and I wouldn't put that in S tier. Gen 3 will always be the GOAT for me followed by Gen 4 .
I started with gen 2 and would put it in D tier.
I'm surprised I say that, but I agree with Dusty of all people! Let's Go was a great game, I agree that it introduced the focus on catching that was later perfected in PLA and (here's where we might disagree) further perfected in SV, and it's a beautiful game visually.

I thought it would be cool to comment my opinion before watching the video to see how it matches up, so I'd like to nominate PLA as the best Pokémon game followed by the gen 2 games because they were some of the first games I played (sadly I've only been able to play them on emulator, also it was a very long time ago when I was a noob so I wasn't able to beat it)
My pokemon game history is close to Souls'.. I've only ever skipped Gen3. Pokemon wasn't cool at the time, and my friends didn't want to play pokemon anymore, so without any of my friends playing and the difficulty of buy things myself because I was a kid, I ended up skipping it out. Picked up pokemon again when Diamond and Pearl came out, and played pretty much everything since.
BW and B2W2 is my fav games amazing story,characters,pokemons its peak
makes me so sad they don't release a combined better version like Emerald anymore. maybe because games have gotten so expensive idk. really wish they would, it would give them the chance to improve from player feedback from the first 2 games.

D & F I 100% agree with. I know people probably won’t agree with me on this but I would put Scarlet & Violet at S. Sun & Moon at A. XY gameplay wise I’m fine with it at B (too easy). PLA I agree with it at A. Theo ther games that weren’t listed I haven’t played.
I think I kinda agree with Dusty that Espathra is not 100% bird. I can see that too.
As someone who almost never plays post-game I don't mind legendaries being given "for free" in a max raid den or something. Get them quick and start a new save file😂
Let’s Go Eevee is a low A for me only because they made my boy Eevee a mascot 😎 also the art and animation is beautiful and it got so many people to hop back on into Pokémon.

Great video and I agree with a lot of your choices! HGSS and BW2 are absolutely S tier and I have fond memories of playing both when they came out. Incredible games that really shine in Pokémon’s history.
I know this is unpopular but my only disagreement is that Legends Arceus is more C or D tier for me, I don’t consider it a mainline game. My favorite part of Pokémon is battle strategy/team building and Legends Arceus was just intense bug collecting with a depressing color palette and bad/absent soundtrack 😬😬😬
Idk, Lumiose, I don't think XY brought the best fossils. To me it's either Galar with cool recombination gimmick and, for the first time in fossilmons, competitive viability, or, surprise, surprise, Kanto with what fossils SHOULD look like. I know prehistoric animals looked no more grey and brown than current ones, but it's a game and grey-brown colors make them feel more COOL and ANCIENT!
My problem with Yellow and why it's like the only non-PLA game (I mean "true main series") that's in my F tier is that they changed Kanto so much. Not only the original pace of the game is ruined, all the in-game trades, and some glitches got "fixed", they even changesld wild encounters, which, in part, lead to the stupid Ditto being a clone of Mew theory with one of the strongest argument being that Ditto can be found in the lab.
Another one is that only Pikachu got this special treatment of being a "buddy" pokemon. I just don't wanna ceter my team around a starter neither regular nor "special". I much prefer what they did in SV when you get Koraidon, but you don't really use it, and when you picnick you take all your pokemon out and they are treated more or less equally.
@Soulsilverart stop whatever you're doing, throw that Alpha Sapphire in the trash and play Emerald ASAP.
The remakes are bizarrely not a more updated definitive way to revisit good old Hoenn, they're a Gen6 game that happens to be set in an alternate history Hoenn where Emerald never got to rearrange the story and flesh out everything so it actually made sense.

Team Magma no longer uses a SUBMARINE to find the LAND legendary UNDERWATER, because the active volcano in the middle of the region now has an interior.
People praise the Battle Frontier (deservedly), but seriously, vanilla RS essentially became outdated versions with incomplete stories when Emerald came out as far as I'm concerned.
Unfortunately, all the GB/GBA and DS cartriges I bought were all black market, but I paid full price😢 I had no idea someone's gonna fake a Nintendo cartridge, I thought nobody plays pokemon, nobody would bother to make fake cartrdges to sell them to like 350 people in the entirety of Russia who might wanna buy Pokémon games

I like Lugia for its stats but I never understood why people like its overly simple design. It's just a fat bird with plain white feathers and some cancer plates on its back. Like how anyone picks that over Ho-Oh?😂
Despite having fixed critical hit rate, no stat experience and modern IV system, as well as separated Sp. A, Sp. D and 3 extra types, Let's Go meta WAS similar to Gen 1: Mewtwo was strong, everything was bulky, you mostly relied on stat stages, not weather, terrain and million other faactors
I was not a fan of SwSh when it first came out, I had a lot of complaints. Since then though, I think it's the most replayable since the first two gens. I have done more themed teams with SwSh than any other game, and I think it's just because of how good the dex was with the DLC and how easy they made it to breed really competitive pokemon.
And a feature I appreciate way more now than I used to is the character customization. I actually dressed my character.

Nah gen 1 isn't a beta gen 2 it's more gen 2 is a glorified DLC for gen 1.
I understand that SwSh could've been a full open world game and all that, but my first steps in a Wild Area were a TRULLY UNFORGETABLE experience! I've never felt as free and "exposed" in my life! It's a FANTASTIC feeling of being "outside", like on your own, like a big world full of life for you to explore! It's like getting to the open sea for the first time, you boat farther and farther from the shore, but you're not scared, you're excited! And the weather was great, it was raining on my first try, I did a picnic, my little oasis, and continued to explore and watch all those pokemon that felt alive. So cool! So free and empowered!
They put gen 9 in the same grade as emerald and platinum that's ridiculous lol
If they released RB today that'd be something like Let's Go, it wouldn't be an instant F game, cos, obviously, they wouldn't use the same 30 y.o. engine and 8 bit graphics. It'd be a good small indi game.

Sometimes Lumiose says such nonsense... Dude, a smartphone is a way of connecting with parents, most kids have smartphones. A Nintendo Switch is game console, a device that distracts a kid from studying, harms their eyesight and "makes them violent", so not all parents will buy that. Everything smartphone is more accessible than everything console, especially considering there's just 2 main kinds of smartphones with most apps and games working with both and at least 3 different game consoles than have very little common software, and Pokémon only comes for Nintendo - that weird indi platform where games cost like an old beaten honda Accord. It's not even Playstation!
I genuinely think that we can't grade the OG kanto games as they are the very games that started everything. Plus... They're nearly 28 years old! 😅

I don't like Fairy type cos everything Fairy was already covered by Psychic (also a magic type), Dragon (a "cooler" magic type), Dark (another "cooler" magic type) and Normal (cute little things). I kind of dislike Dark for the same reason being a weird mix between Normal and Ghost, it's like should've been just a category like sound or powder moves, not a whole new type. Same is Fairy - basically just a variation of Psychic.
Sure, I have that theory that Psychic is also a radiation type, and it kind of takes too many roles, but, like, I'd be ok with Fairy if it wasn't like THE BEST TYPE IN THE GAME COMPETITIVELY🤬

Hot take, gen 3 is actually one of my least liked gens. My favourite is probably generation 5.
Black 2 / White 2 probably the best games overall. Unfortunately I've never liked the monster and game art design, and by that I mean they're bottom tier. Worst either S/V (a bit unfair given there's a DLC coming) or X/Y.
Question now is did soul start alpha?
Great list! A lot different then mine but, I definitely understand the reasons for each and I like that they all value different things. One thing I think that I wish was considered more is Scarlet and Violet is incomplete. I think it was considered a little towards the end but, let's be honest, Sword and Shield would be a C max without the DLC and Scarlet and Violet is so much more replayable and they will more than likely hit homeruns with the DLC with the lore building they have done and new Pokémon and forms. I think when it's all said and done we'll look at scarlet and violet as one of the best mainline pokemon adventures in years and it's bringing a lot of people back into pokemon (myself included)
That's the whole point of Let's Go - it's a great fame for non-Pokémon people. Imagine teaching your normie girlfriend how to use Expanding Force in Psychic terrain. Like, would she even listen? Let's Go teaches a new player its simple mechanics in Gym tests. Perfect! And it's based in Kanto, the most important region for you to know to become a part of community. Like, how would you understand "I like shorts!" meme if you haven't played Kanto?!

but yeah, despite having played gen 2 absurdly many times back in the day, as well as the remakes, all of that nostalgia is not enough to stop me from seeing how flawed (to my subjective preferences) they are in hindsight.
Don't get me wrong though, HGSS was the closest we got to a remake that did the remake thing somewhat right. It's just still held back massively by being too faithful to the originals (with BDSP existing that sounds weird to say, cause those took being a faithfully bad remake to a whole other level),
but essentially,
my main gripe with HGSS is that it felt the need to try and recreate the context of GSC in a post gen3 era, which to me is a huge contradiction.
Because Gen3 is when the series was redefined and laid out in a way that was setting up for the long run (it's there that we start having a notion of what a "new region" should be or have), whereas GSC were conceived as a cherry on top finale to the series.
..because of that, the fauna of HGSS remains mostly frustrating (most "gen2" pkmn being hidden in obscure places as if they're easter eggs to seek out in the post-game, a huge contrast to the post-gen3 era where new pkmn ARE the spotlight of the adventure), and so it results in a missed opportunity of giving Johto a shot at being a fleshed out region (in terms of Pkmn specifically, which strongly carries on into things like gym leaders and E4 battles..).
Frankly, it feels awkward to have a REMAKE stick to a structure that was based on the assumption that the "iconic" Pkmn in it are a mystery.. cause the cat was out of the bag by the end of Gen2 already.
Sada looks good in 3D, but the artwork on the website is horrible!

No, Dusty, dude, FRLG despite being my first games (I mean, don't say I have nostalgia) are the worst Kanto unless maybe if you count Sevii Islands (don't do much for me, but it's understandable if some players like them). FRLG is the same slightly underdeveloped world minus the huge fun factor of Gen 1 mechanics and glitches. Kanto is already a pretty boring region that doesn't provide much when it's not paired with Johto, why making it even more boring?

@@HiddenPowerPodcast have you tried getting 8F? It's actually a lot of fun if you can find a great use for it. For example, you can get any Hidden Power for mons to transfer to Gen 2. Or at least you can make breeding for correct HP type a lot easier: no need to catch high level parents where it's easy to calculate Defense DV (or Attack? Only one of HP DVs is inherited, it's either Atk or Def). And the best part is that it's not even cheating cas all you do is you use legit game control inputs and no other devices or software. What other game gives you that opportunity?
Dude, you don't need Metal Claw to defeat Brock with Charmander. Just Growl his Attack down and wait for Bide to miss and use Ember. It's actually not that hard

The story makes less sense in Ultra Sun and Moon. The original Sun and Moon is better to me...
Not gonna lie you all love gen 5 to much they aren’t a tier they are d tier they are when I fell out of love with pokemon. All the initial reaction gen 5 with hate was correct😂😂
Too high: Sw/Sh X/Y Sun/Moon
Too low: Emerald/ Lets Go
While I do think Kanto is overkill, I enjoyed the different approach to catching and seeing Pokémon in the overworld. I think a high C would be about right. In my opinion SW/Sh, Sun/Moon, and X/Y has no replay value. The maps are boring, the ease in which you level up gives you no challenge, and overall the stories are very forgettable. Pokémon Emerald is definitely S tier. It improved the story from R&S, added the frontier, and the events were great. I enjoy y’all’s content but this tier list felt a little too nostalgia heavy.

Enjoyed the podcast overall, but I didnt like how high SwSh was placed. The DLCs were kinda better, but those doesnt make this crappy game redeemable. It's another big fat F tier for me. BW is also ranked a little too low for my liking. I mean it's lower than SwSh & USUM for crying out loud, c'mon.

Gen 3 is by far the most re-playable games for me with just enjoy story to move you forward and enough type options to feel different each time.
Gen 7 was awful with the hand holding and endless dialog on every bloody route, i tried to replay it and just put it down at one point as i just wanted to play but the dialog WOULD NOT END.
Diamond and Pearl are overrated.
