Yeah, it was strange that he didn't mention the mental damage, which is my favorite part. It puts the pressure on your opponent to rush you down, even if you created a zoning situation that makes it a bad idea.
@@BMVfilms it did. The 10 seconds was and still is the main issue. Dizzy can kill people (or at least get them low enough for WoL to not contribute afterwards) or die herself before it goes off.
I think that even if it doesn't kill you are still getting your value's worth out of it. It's free outside of a short animation before activation and after a few seconds you bet your ass your opponent is going to try and mash you out of it which you can use against them. Sure you may choose to RC or reversal super rather than let the wings pop, but you still got that pressure to mash on them AND used another better option for the situation. Yeah I wanted to comment the same thing The reward for Wings of Light 90% of the time isn't the damage, it's the mental stack. You're conditioning the opponent to mash and take risks while you give up nothing really of your own aside from better pressure on oki, which, you still have really good pressure and can punish overwager enemies
I think people are rely underestimating how strong it is to force YRC of burst out oof people reminds me of how Romolla kept talking about how half the potential of a move is in it's threat
What I don't understand is why are you evading. The optimal way to use it is to set it up after a hard knockdown and use the wake up pressure to keep the person locked into a blocking stance.
In all of my matches I've never been hit by wings of light. The stupid freeze move though? 500 times? And then the stupid ice field stopping all of my ground movement against a zoner; chef's kiss. You're frozen for so long you may as well get a cup of coffee while Dizzy gets the wall break.
I can’t wait for the general populous of players to figure out she’s more of a setplay mixup character and not a zoner, she’s so much more fun AND effective if you use ice and fish to set up mixups rather than to zone
@@BudewFan_ I call her a zoner, but that's how you play zoners in this game. You can't really kill people with projectiles when everyone two touches you. You have to use the projectiles to get in and start mix.
@@unrighteous8745 that explains a lot of the discussion around her, makes sense but its kind of weird to have a game specific definition of zoner, especially when Axl is a pretty standard normals zoner
I find Wings of Light a fun "Intrinsic Motivation" type of special move where I like challenging myself to land the move. It's fun when it works because it's an alternate way to win that requires a different approach in playstyle and tactics. And Dizzy has enough powerful tools and screen-control that the move doesn't feel necessary, just fun. I find her "Laser Beam" Super to fit the same niche. You'll likely prioritise Tension for RC, but it's hype to land the Super and clutch a win.
Wing of light is, to me, a very ‘rich get richer’ move, in that it takes a situation you are already ahead in (high tension enemy no burst) and makes you go from dangerous to an absolute menace. The big problem is that Guilty Gear is already so lethal that there will be few situations that the damage done by wings of light can’t also be done with a normal combo, especially if you cash out for gamma ray. With that said, this is THE option that will let you live in your enemy’s head rent-free, you can bait an unwise burst or mash losing nothing yourself except a slight reduction to your oki. Under those circumstances it becomes really good.
She doesn't have the ability to spend RC to mix outside of 5D, so her meter usage is already significantly worse than the best characters. Most chars just spend the 50 to unreactable 50/50 you from their block pressure, whereas she can't do that and has to setup a 637 frame move to accomplish something similar.
I figured someone would find a WoL TOD eventually, the best part is you don't even need full meter to start since you can still build meter in the combo before they activate. The biggest issue with WoL IMO is that most of the time you could probably replace them with an RC or Super and get equally good results.
ArcSys bothered to bring this Boss-only, borderline Instant Kill move back, nerfed it by making it extremely situational and nowhere as broken as it was as a Boss-only move in XX, and yet people still doom posted about it. There’s no winning with certain people.
Who ever would have guessed the complex set up tool needed time to be labed out I swear to god every time a new character comes out and people start saying this is broken or this is bad they need to just shut it and wait you don't know what's good until like a month later
The thing that's interesting and valuable about wings isn't the damage, it's the response it provokes from the opponent. It doesn't have that damage potential so that it can actually deal it; the damage potential is only there so that the opponent wants to do something to avoid it. Wings' meta isn't going to be about setups to get it off, it's going to be about ways to exploit the opponent's response.
Kinda feels like wings is, for the most part, a move where you sacrifice oki but get to apply more pressure to your opponent. They'll be more motivated to swing at you or burn resources to get rid of it, which could overall give you advantage throughout the round, even if wings never pops. Overall though, it kind of feels like this tradeoff isn't worth it most of the time, since Dizzy has so many other moves to be using. Sacrificing a dagger, fish, or ice floor doesn't seem worth it most of the time.
Even if it doesn't do much/any damage, it *can* scare your opponent into burning a resource (burst or tension) in order to land some kind of hit on you to prevent otherwise guaranteed damage
I think it’s pretty interesting how certain tools Dizzy have a designed to spend time. Like her gran having a long animation. And her first 50% ult being able to hold the enemy for some time before it does it’s final blow. I wonder how her game plan will develop, because her zoning is pretty much figured out, but the wings are taking some time.
@@amphal4467 If you stay in the air and avoid the hitbox entirely she only uses 50 meter and doesn’t go into the animation. Also gamma ray doesn’t really have any synergy with wings since you use all your tension

Just don't forget WoL not getting damage makes it a wate. If you have it charging and have meter, the opponents now has a new potential threat they should respect. You can beat their options if you expect them to try and stop wings even if they succeed.
I think the meter requirement is the bullet that makes this move one of her worst (still honestly alright). It doesn't do much damage unless you have about 80+ meter, and if you have 100 then you could just fish for Spike > Gamma Ray which actually keeps your competency in the neutral game and keeps your options open for RC or Imperial Ray. If you made wings of light deal more damage per meter I think it would have the better chance of seeing use, though still a really mid special move.
I think it should be weaker, dealing much less damage per second, but activate faster. That would turn it into a "chip your opponent health a bit each time, with more reliability" move, instead of a "the most risky gambit ever, but if you land it, you win the game" move. I'm pretty confident the fact it drains meter and can still be interrupted by hitting Dizzy, both before and after wings "fire", would keep the move in check if it was changed this way. (remember : damage would be much slower, so if you interrupt activated wings quickly, you wouldn't take much damage at all) It would make it much less of a knowledge check for your opponent, and an actually reliable move. One worth sacrificing fish oki for, and that you can actually land on an opponent who knows what he's doing.
The 10 second WoL is much more fun as no one wants to get hit by easy unblockables. Its just enough time for the panic to set in, but not too short where she could use it every time you block anything.
@@sleepfgc 5 to 7 seconds is still pretty dang long in Guilty gear. When i say "faster", I don't mean a time so short you could get it every time either.
