I feel like in some cases it makes the image feel a lot blurrier (doesn't actually make it blurry tho, it's just a side effect of colour bleeding into other things thanks to Bungie's amazing implementation of bloom) but it also adds a bunch of character and warmth to the scenes so I'll keep it on.
And actually it feels like it color corrects some of these levels. The greenness of the foliage on Reach did feel a little muted on PC (among other things) even though I didn't realize why. It turns out it was due to the lack of bloom, which shifts the color of the entire scene. The comparisons at 2:00 show this off the best in my opinion.

@@YigitCanAydinSS I agree but you can already alter graphics settings on PC. The bloom effect counts as graphics and should be able to turned off. I can see some people finding the bloom a bit distracting.
I think the bloom really improves the darker scenes, like the corvette interior. Other than that, it makes things look a bit blurry and makes me feel a bit uncomfortable like I'm losing my sight. Though it could be the swapping back and forth for the comparison
No, it's definitely like that in-game. I liked not having bloom, actually, because it's much less blurry and makes my eyes hurt a lot less. They need to at least add a toggle in the settings for it.
Glad to see this addressed, but wow, it's really an intense change. I knew the lighting bloom was reduced in MCC, but I didn't think it was that huge a difference. I guess part of what I was chalking up to the lower resolution on 360 was actually color bleeding from bloom? That, or they made it more intense then it was even on 360. If this really is correct then honestly I wouldn't mind some sort of in between option.... in any case, is there any other visual fixes you've noticed, or just this so far? Really wish they listed this stuff in the patchnotes.
I explained this in another video, but the reason bloom was reduced in MCC was not because anything was changed in the bloom calculation, but because the resolution increase resulted in the bloom covering less screen space but effecting the same number of adjacent pixels
They made Halo Reach look worse with the new bloom, it's so dumb cause the reason Bloom was present in HR and H4 was to hide the jagged edges on X360, before this update HALO Reach looked more contrasty and clear
Now the only thing I want is for mcc to give you the option to activate film grain and motion blur. Sure I know most people won't like it but it's how the game originally looked.
Nah, there are other visual issues with reach beyond the bloom, like some missing shadows and ambient occulsion and such. Though maybe they fixed that too?
I really hope we get a graphical setting down the line at some point to turn it back off again. It was really nice to not have the bloom, we all play on much ceisper higher resolution screens than back in the 360 fays of plasma tv's. Bloom makes so many things look worse by just adding a layer of blur that does my eyes in.
It looks like the bloom effect itself is rendering at a lower than native resolution and since almost everything has an intense bloom the whole image suffers from blurring. The bloom is gorgeous in some scenes but that blur it causes is ridiculous
Agree. With the exception of ONI sword base which I think looks better in the after image, all of them look more blurry and low resolution and.. more orange for some reason. Granted most of the comments here see it and go "it adds character and depth (???)" But yeah I hope there's a way to turn it off cause I liked the before image for almost every single one of these.
Oof yeah I liked the before in this place. That bloom is aggressive and was probably done to help with the 360's struggle to keep that game looking good and running smooth.
Its incredible how much of an impact this does to my nostalgic memories. It feels WAY MORE like the halo reach i played and yet the change might be nothing that a non-fan might notice.
