Where can I find the videos of you making the wires your using on here. I’m new to stereo equipment and I have a Pioneer 9.2 channel SC-1522-K AV Receiver and I just got it but it was used on eBay and it is flashing UE22 and I think it’s done working but I couldn’t get the system hooked up right I guess because it wouldn’t let me calibrate my speakers so if you have any tips for me on anything I would greatly appreciate the help
Hi Alan! Great video! I stumbled onto your channel while doing an electrical upgrade on my office. The hook-up to your Yamaha receiver was a bonus. I have an RX-A2000 which I love. I was able to use your info to tweak my system. I am now going to check out more of your videos on receiver setups to fine tune my system even more. Thank you very much.
@@sarasartori6859 Yes. You should check the firmware often. Go into the setup menu and you should be able to find the update option under the system settings or network settings (I think).
I wish you woud live close by me. You are right, the ARC has been a total pain, I got the surround speakers to work except the sub. I am going to do what you said: delete ARC or not use it and see what do I get. Thank you for such an educational video. I am going to look up how to connect an amp to my AV receiver. I hope you have a video as good as this on the topic I need.
I don't have a video for that. Sorry! I don't think adjusting the ARC setting will help your subwoofer though. Is it not showing up on the initial speaker setup?
@@TheJosa007 Hmmmmmm... that would tell me that it isn't connected to the receiver correctly, isn't turned up, isn't turned on, or has been disabled in the receiver speaker menu somewhere.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV Thank you for checking. I have checked everything I know how. Even re-setting the tv couple of times to see if the TV software can find it. Once I run the Pioneer set up, I can "tell" the TV I have a sub, but even with that when I am done with the set up the Pioneer software returns a "no sub" I agree with you that most likely the ARC feature is doing this. Next thing I will try is to remove the ARC and see if I can assign it to any other HDMI input. Thank you for taking the time to look into this. I hope my pain can help other users.
Can you tell me if I have a part of my Onkyo AVX HT R560 receiver shot? We came home from a vacation during which there was a power outage. Some of the settings were not as they were when we left but upon returning I could get no sound from the receiver in TV/CABLE mode. DVD and FM radio comes through. DVD is connected by Component cables and the TV/cable and Roku stick with HDMI. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Hi Alan. Excelent video,as always. I have a Yamaha avr and love it, but i have to agree with you on the HDMI (ARC) piece. It is the devils spawn! I spent two days trying to sort this out and to no joy, then i read what youi said about HDMI control. Turned that off on both Amp and tv, amazing,no switching when not needed,no hassle. Thank you.
Does component video have better Quality than composite video? I’m making a home theater that is a 7.1.2 sound system and I want to know what’s better.
Hi I have a question. I have a denon avr 4800. Could you please show me or give me some pointers on the best way to hook it up and get the most out of it? Thank you
Every system is unique to the home owner's situation so it's impossible to make a one-size-fits-all installation guide. This is why my video series teaches you the ins and outs of a home theater system. This way, you can take the information and run with it, hopefully tweaking your system as you grow and technology changes.
Hey bro great video!, i have the Yamaha RX-A3060, almost the same setup but only amp to 'main', no additional zones, I also have the 'one connect box' for my Samsung and the 4K firestick. I watched Part 1 to Part 4 to be sure i was right on my connections and all the setups, excellent guide and info, thx.
Do you want to try to listen to 2 different things using the same fire stick? That is not possible. If you want to use the Fire Stick in zone 2, you'll need to get an "HDMI to analog convertor." HDMI will work for zone 1 but zone 2 will need the analog connection. In this way, you can listen to the same thing from the Fire Stick in both zones or one zone while you do something different on a separate device in a different zone. Example, Fire Stick zone 2 and cable box in zone 1.
This is a great video. To the point and very helpful, especially if one has a newer model receiver. I have a Yamaha RX-V630 receiver that I have had for a long time. It has excellent sound and I hate to give it up. It does great surround sound and does not have any HDMI, internet or a couple other of the newer ports, some of which have since been deleted. I moved and forgot how I had it set up to play the great surround sound I had. It was great! One of my favorite videos to watch while running the surround sound on it is, Forrest Gump and especially the scene where Forrest is carrying Bubba out of the jungle and the jets do a low fly over dropping napalm. Hearing those jets actually fly over my head was incredible! Do you have a video that explains how to hook up the surround sound on that receiver? It does have optical in and the majority of the speakers need banana clips / plugs. I would love to keep that sound system for as long as it continues to work great. I hope to hear from you one of these days. Thanks!!
I do not have a video showing that specific receiver. It would be tough to do a video for every receiver which is why I tried to make this one as informative as possible. Hopefully, the viewers would be armed with enough info to figure it all out. Best of luck!
trying to hook up my dvd c920 to my rx v1300 i hook up the 6 channel mode but i can floyd (or other quad music to play in all speakers independently anymore can not get money from pink floyd to play in all 4 different speakers the change falling used to drop in all different speakers can't get it to work anymore

Hey im confused. You said in your 3rd part not to use ARC output its bad bad bad, but in this video, you had used it. Lol idk am i missing something. Because i got my HDMI cable coming from the ARC OUTPUT from my YAMAHA reciever into my ARC on my tv, then i have all my ACCESSORIES, DVD player, ROKU ect going into the HDMI inputs on my reciever. So is this correct? Works fine. Im just confused of your statement and dont wana hook it up wrong. Thank.

you have on min 22:14 ...audio ON on tv wen receiver is OFF this option is for video? too? to have receiver on standby and the video signal to go on tv?
Isn’t that a pretty cool feature?! I think it’s called “passive audio pass-through.” When the receiver is off, the video AND audio go to the TV. This is nice for people that want to watch TV without the surround sound speakers on.
Yes. Is cool. I whant go with signal from PC in receiver to TV. When the receiver is OFF i whant to have signal in my TV. When the receiver is on, i whant to have the sound of the PC in the receiver. I buy the Yamaha RX-V685. In 4 days is comming. I dont know is having this option
Hey Alan, I only have two plug ins available on my cable box, the HDMI cable and the power cable. So I can only run the HDMI cable to the receiver. Does this impact my abilities to do different zones? For example, I want to listen to a football game outside (zone 2).
Unfortunately yes. Oh,,the signal resolution UHD its pretty dark ...don't matter how I adjust the tv, have you heard that problem? Thanks
It sounds like you have it right. The only recommendation I would make is to stream content through a device such as a Roku or Appletv. This makes it so you don’t have to worry about pulling audio from the TV which should improve speed and audio/video quality since most streaming devices stream better than TVs.

have you got a video or other resource on how to connect the receiver Zone 2 pre-out to a speaker selector like the niles ss-4? I am looking to do this to have music in rooms separate from my living room.
I don’t have a video for that but it’s easy. Go out of the Zone 2 speaker posts (not RCA preout) straight into the speaker selector “speaker in.” Then use the outputs on the speaker selector to go out to each speaker location.
Thank you for the useful video I’m an apprentice, I work for a low voltage company and this video’s help me a lot to understand things that were confusing for me
If I understand correctly some old AVR like my Denon 1910 would probably not support 4K.I have my old OPPO BDP 93 Blu-Ray player and I just bought my new Panasonic DP-UB 9000 4K player. In this case should I just plug in both my Hdmi audio only out cable connections of both my Blu-Ray players to the HDMI IN connections of my Denon Avr, and the Video OUT only HDMI connections of my Blu-Ray players to the HDMI IN connections of my LG-G2 Television.Second question. If I bought the latest Denon AVR-X700 series, which should be 4K compatible with Dolby Vision and Dolby audio capable, would I then be able to use the HDMI OUT Connection instead of connecting the Video OUT connections of my Blu-Ray players to the HDMI IN connection to the TV,or did I misunderstand your tutorial.Anyone out there can help me?
If understand you correctly, essentially you're asking if you should send audio to the receiver then bypass the receiver with a second HDMI cable from the BluRay players to the TV. To maximize quality, yes. Using your existing receiver, you should hook it up as you explained. If you upgrade the receiver, just run one HDMI from each Bluray player to the receiver. Then connect the receiver to the TV with one HDMI and you will maximize performance in all of your equipment.
How you connect the main direct tv dvr in the main receiver and the genie mini in zone 2. But when turn it on just power on the zone 2 in the receiver?
Well is an universal remote control, the av is an Sony receiver, but even with the original remote when I turned on the power it will turn on both zones. I know is confusing, I will try to get program it from my laptop and see if that resolve the issue. I’ll let you know
This is a great video. We're cutting the cord, so actually doing away with the TiVo / cable box. In this case we're using an LG smart TV, connected to our home network via wifi and streaming UA-cam TV, HBO, Pandora, etc. So, my question is, how to connect the TV to the AVR so we can get full sound and send that sound to multiple zones.
I get this question a lot. Your best bet is to use a streaming device such as a Roku, AppleTv, or Firestick. Connect that device to the receiver and you’ll get surround sound. Otherwise, you’ll have to activate ARC (which I hate) or use the audio out on the TV (which is usually a fiber optic connection). If you want to send that to multiple zones, you’ll need a device with analog audio outputs (for the zone connections) and an HDMI for the main zone. Typically, new receivers have their own network music streams which can be controlled via smart phone and can be sent to any or all of the zones. This is a must have feature in my opinion.
Ok Iam just starting to learn so bear with have a Yamaha Rx really almost same one in video anyway I only run 2.1 stereo I have by amp it. @@AlanCleggYouDoAV Thanks for responding. What I decided to do is to treat the other receiver as a completely separate system. I got a deal on an old yamaha rx-v367 and i had order a new remote. now question the sub out is not working and I've turned it on in the menu sp.config is there something im missing
It could be that it doesn’t work. What sound field are you using? Did you set the crossover frequency on the receiver? Make sure the sub is plugged in, connected correctly, and turned on (I know these are dumb but important).
2 ? Help Please. #1 I have a Yamaha receiver also but I don't see the on screen menu. What setting do I need to change on my element tv. #2 Do I connect my firestick into HDMI on receiver or leave it hooked up to tv. I love the 4 part setup receiver videos
1. You have to make sure your receiver has an onscreen menu. If so, you should only have to push the “on screen” or “menu” button to bring it up. Make sure the receiver is connected to your TV and the TV is on the corresponding input. 2. Connect the Firestick into the HDMI on your receiver so you can get surround sound while you’re streaming. Thanks for watching!
Alan. Great channels but as a complete novice I'm struggling with the basics. I have a fairly new TV which as far as I can see has stereo headphone output and a digital audio output, then tbere are wuite a few HDMIs. I also have an old school Marantz surround sound system which has only red/yellow and white RCA plugs. How do I hook them together?
Hmmmmm... the only thing I can think to do is to buy a 3.5 mm mini to RCA connector. Plug the mini into the TV headphone jack and the RCAs into the receiver. It’s not ideal but it will work. The TV volume will have to be up high and should stay there. Both the receiver and TV will have the power to control the volume and it can make it messy when you’re switching inputs on the receiver. www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-3-5mm-2-Male-Adapter-Stereo/dp/B01D5H8KO2?th=1&psc=1
Awesome video as always, Alan! Thanks again. I am trying to connect presence speakers (front) into my Yamaha RX V677 Receiver. I gather that I need to enable them. Does that mean I need to move speaker setup from Auto to Manual?
I have SPEAKER WIRE speakers only on my Denon 689, and when I try to clip them in like you do, I still get nothing from my receiver to the speaker. I'm only trying 1 speaker (center) to produce a sound, but I get nothing on A or B.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV ok. So I guess I need a refresher course on this. How do I get something out of the center speaker? And then the subwoofer and the rear surround? What options do I have to enable for that?
Also, you can choose a sound field that uses all speakers. Depending on the receiver, this mode can be called “all channel” or “7 channel stereo” or something like that.
As a custom installer, we want to have very specific and exact control over everything. When we allow other devices to make decisions for us, like is seen with the ARC, the systems get screwy and our customers call us requiring a service call. Although it usually works correctly, the few times it doesn’t will make angry customers. Most of them hire us because technology isn’t their strong suit so they can’t get the system back on track without our help.
Alan, I'm trying to set my zone 2 up and use analog audio. My direct TV genie only has a single connection that says digital audio. Besides the hdmi. How do I work around this problem to get analog to zone 2?
You can get a digital to analog converter on Amazon. Do you have a digital coax (RCA style plug) or optical audio (fiber optic plug)? There is an adaptor for either one.
That is called digital coax. I can’t speak for the quality of this product but this is something that could work: www.amazon.com/Musou-Digital-Optical-Converter-Adapter/dp/B01AWBA8U8

Thanks, Allan! Great stuff! I learnt a lot. I have a question: if all things on my receiver were connected similar to what you showed, Should I connect my Apple TV HDMI to my TV directly or should it go through the receiver?
Definitely through the receiver. If you don't, you won't get surround sound from your AppleTV unless you use ARC (which I do NOT recommend) or you use the TV audio output. It's way easier and performs better if you just go straight to the receiver.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV ! Thanks a lot. Got that. Would you recommend the Apple TV go directly to the receiver even if my TV Audio comes out via an optic cable and goes into the receiver?
Among F&D T400X and T60X which is better in bass and clarity? Is there any model of F&D speaker System having Dolby sarround sound or any update on the upcoming model having Dolby sarround sound? Regards Jitendra
You can’t connect the Blu-ray player to the Ano with an HDMI? If not, you’ll have to get an HDMI to whatever-connection-you-need convertor. They make almost everything you can think of.
Okay all the connections made sense up until HDMI out from the receiver to HDMI in to the TV. Why is the signal going to the TV at this point? What is the TV going to do with the signal? The television gets its signal from either satellite or Fiber Optics or in some very rare cases over the air through an antenna and goes directly into the TV. The TV does not require anything else and yet there it is going in again. Why?
Good question! The receiver needs to be directly connected to the devices for the best audio quality (don't connect the device to the TV then come out of the "audio out" on the TV into the receiver). This is best done via HDMI directly from the device to the receiver. This is VERY important for high quality audio. Your TV won't even send out multi-channel audio. It only sends out stereo (left and right). I know that's not your question but I want to make sure that point is clear. Now why does the receiver connect to the TV? 1. If everything is connected to the receiver first, you need to get video from the receiver to the TV. Since HDMI is carrying audio and video, the receiver will keep the audio signals from the devices and pass the the video to the TV through the "HDMI out" on the receiver. 2. Convenience of video switching. I don't need to change inputs on my TV if I use this method. Essentially, my TV is just a monitor that requires On/Off. I never have to change TV inputs because all the video comes through the single HDMI from the receiver. I only have to make the switch on the RECEIVER and it will change the audio AND video for me.
My question would be when you connect the Ethernet for the network cable how does this replace the IR if you were in a different room the canals would switch through wifi?
You have to have a remote control processor that is capable of sending remote commands via network. These are typically for custom installers but if you can get your hands on one and the programming software, I definitely recommend using this type of system. Your remote could be connected to the WiFi network speaking to the base station or the remote could be using RF. Then the base station (which needs to be connected to the network) sends commands over the network to any device anywhere in the house.
In the app musiccast wen is plaing a song from samm source, Spotify/deezer/bluetooth/digital in.hi tells you whay quality (ex: flac-44.1khz). What best quality you see there?
I am using a Denon AVR-X1400H. I am getting crackling through my paradigm subwoofer. Do you know why it crackles at certain decibels because it does not crackle all the time. If I don't want to use my surround sound with my 4k tv do I still have to hook up digital optical wire?
The sub can be a few things. I'd check the wiring first. Let the sub do its thing then wiggle both ends of the plug (and the wire) and see if it crackles. If that seems ok, it may be that your sub amp is going bad. When there are loud sounds, there is a lot of power demand on that amp (built inside your sub). Try messing with the settings, like bringing the sub volume down (also called "level"). Also mess with the power on/off/auto setting. I know it sounds weird, but switching the power to "on" instead of "auto" can also help that problem sometimes. If that doesn't do it, you may be looking at getting a new sub.
In response to your TV question, you ONLY need to use a fiber optic is you are streaming content using the apps in your TV and you want that to play through the speakers. I prefer you don't do that. A better option is to use your DVD player to stream or even better yet, buy an AppleTV or Roku to stream. They're cheap and awesome for streaming. I use the Roku in my house and I love it.

Hi Alan, Your videos are really helpful. I'm trying connect my TV to Yamaha AV Receiver HTR-5890 7.1 Channel. This is an old AV Receiver model, thus it doesn't have HDMI input/output. My main purpose is merely to watch movies on Netflix (built-in my smart TV). From your videos, I know how to hook up AV Receiver to my speakers, but I don't know how to connect TV to AV Receiver. Could you please briefly show me how? I highly appreciate your help. Best regards. V
Getting audio OUT of your TV is a little but tricky but it's possible. 1. Use RCA cables to go from the audio OUT on the TV to an input on the receiver. Then go through your TV menus to make sure you're sending audio to the receiver. Usually this is done by turning the speakers off or setting the volume setting to "fixed" instead of "variable." 2. Use an optical audio cable to go from the TV to the receiver. You'll still need to make sure the menus are set up properly on the TV. 3. Don't stream through the TV. Stream using a Blu-ray player or AppleTV or Roku, etc.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV Great! Thanks Alan. I am using optical audio cable. I am playing Infinity War on Netflix streaming from my Roku. However, I can only hear the sound from my Front Left and Front Right speakers only. I can't hear the Center, Back, and Surround Speakers. Do you think I that I need to do further setting for the AV receiver (ie. switch from 2 channels to 7 channels,... ) or it's just simply because my AV receiver is broken? I checked and I am 100% sure that all of my speakers are working well. Thanks.
@@chauviet5111989 You need to change the audio soundfield. I think Yamaha calls it "Program" on the receiver. Scroll through the "programs" until you find 5 Ch or 7Ch. Also "Surr Decode." If those don't play all your speakers, you may have a wiring problem or speaker setup issue.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV my question is that im buying a receiver for my tv, just wanted you to see if this receiver is ok with my tv. Im actually choosing from this two receiver, i will show u the model number.... thank u much...
Gregg, I am sure this is a pretty dumb question but I do not understand so I must ask. If all devices are connected to the HDMI "in" ports on the AVR and the ARC port is Audio Return from the TV then how does, say for example how does the BlueRay Player get its Video to the TV? If also I must use the Optical Cable from Receiver to TV which makes the signal less quality because optical does not give the best of transfer. I guess my 2nd question would be if I do not use the Optical what can I do to get highest quality for Video and Audio "to and from" Receiver and TV? To be honest with you I would be glad to pay you (if I knew how) for this information because it is that important to me. Thank You!
The ARC is a special feature built into the output on the the receiver that sends video TO the TV and receives audio FROM the TV. Very important: ARC is a feature built into the output NOT the output itself. That means you can turn the ARC feature off an use it as a normal output. All video connected to the receiver will go to the TV through the ARC output without a problem. The problem exists when you try to activate the ARC feature because you have to activate HDMI control which can make your system go screwy. Neither ARC nor optical audio will provide you with HD audio. To make your life easier, don't bother getting audio from your TV. Get a streaming device like a ROKU or AppleTV. They are faster, offer better quality audio, and you don't need to use the ARC to use them. If you have an Apple phone, get an AppleTV. It will open up some cool features for you. Streaming through a separate device makes everyone happy. Does that answer your questions?
Zone 1 is your main zone. Zone 2 or 3 can be any other room or location. In a 2/3 zone system, you can watch whatever you want in zone 1 while listening to something completely different in zone 2 or 3.
It allows your devices to talk to each other and send each other commands. That sounds like a good idea except for when it doesn't do what you want. Example: you're watching satellite TV. Your young toddler accidentally turns the DVD player on. Your DVD player tells your TV to change inputs which you don't want so you jump up to turn the DVD player off and the DVD player tells your TV to turn off too. Now your TV is on the wrong input and powered off. For some people that isn't too hard to fix but for others it's a nightmare- especially if you have a universal remote or a TV that doesn't understand ON/OFF power controls. It's easier to turn it off and let a nice universal remote handle all the switching. There are LOT of examples of this confusion that I've seen and it makes a nightmare.
Alan Clegg how would you wire up a 12 ceiling apeakers and 4 outdoor ground speakers. This is mainly going to be used for music. I have the av receiver and seperate amp. Just want to know the best way to wire everything
First you need a way to control volume at each location. Volume controls in each room are cheap and convenient. That's a lot of speakers so I hope your amp is powerful. Get an 8 zone speaker selector (that connects 8 pairs of speakers- i'm assuming you have 2 speakers in each room). The speaker selector balances the impedance so you don't blow the amp. Connect the speaker selector to the receiver and the speakers to the speaker selector.
Hi Alan or any one that can help me out. I have a Yamaha RX-A2030 for many years ( bought new when it came out) I got this with first speaker set up to be able to grow my speakers but not have to buy a new am every time I upgrade to eventually get my dream speakers. I'm 5.1 for now with high end speakers ( B&W 803D , Wharfedale diamond 220 book shelf (got a really good deal on them) and 700W dynamo Martin Logan sub. I will be adding 2.1 down the road. My question is do you have a video on how to set up the receiver to be able to optimize this kind of set up I love gaming movies and music but I don't have the knowledge to set up sound hertz and other stuff of that nature I don't understand so I basically set up my stuff by ear as I like it better then using the Ypao. I'm having problems making the Wharfedale sound present it feels like everything else cancels them out and this shouldn't be as the Wharfedale 220's are a high end bookshelf speakers. When I bought them they sounded very good in the store but at home it feels like I don't have the right options selected on the yamaha amp. I did not bridge the speakers I'm using banana plugs for everything. Not sure if bridging them will change anything so I'm not tempting it. thanks for the help
I don’t know if I’m the right guy to answer this. My ears are above average but not pro level by any means. My strengths are installation. The YPAO mic should get you really close. Set your subwoofer to LFE at 80 hz. I hope to make a video using a hand held sound level meter later. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
thanks for the answer. The sub is on LFE but don't know how to put it to 80hz the amp doesn't allow to do this I don't think. What I did is watch Martin Logan's tutorial on subs and did what they said and I think it sounds good...lol. Like I said I don't know what HZ do so what I did is set up fronts to large centre to small default 40hz and rears are at small 40hz default again. Everything sound amazing but I'm sure that a pro would come here and set everything up it would sound so much better. I'm just not very good with setting up amps as the technical stuff eludes me I should watch more videos regarding this to help me understand better. May I suggest you to make a full video on all the options of your Yamaha because there is nothing on YT about yamaha trust me been looking for years...lol. I don't remember but I think I have the model right above the one you have so I'm guessing you got yours about the same year I did ( 2010 ish) another thing have been trying to update my amp's firmware for years now with the usb drive and it doesn't want to update and to be honest I have never connected it to the internet as mine didn't come with the wifi antenna and it is to far for a cable hookup do you have a suggestion for this? Yes I watched clips on how to do it and it won't work at all so my 2030 is still on version 1.87 and should be at 1.93. another thing Yamaha has apps for theses amps and can't make them work so I'm guessing I need to either connect it to my router or get the wifi antenna what is your take on this? Sorry for the long questions but your the first to actually answer back to any questions an you seem to know your shit and have almost the exact same amp I do. thanks!
@@taxi615 You can change the setting I'm almost positive. All your speakers should be set to "small" and 80 hz. You want them to handle all your mids and highs while the sub handles the lows. Without seeing the menus, I can't tell you to do it exactly. You have to download the update, then unzip it I think. After following the bootup protocal on the receiver, it should see the file. Otherwise, get a long network cable and run it on the floor to the router and do it over the network. Then roll up the wire and store it away. OR you can unplug all the cables into the receiver and take it to the router.
yeah I'll try setting up to 80hz and watch a movie or music to see how I feel about it. as for the firmware I just tried with a long cable over the network and I get a DEVICE ERROR after it does the verification. I'm shit outta luck I guess I'll go on my friend PC to do the usb thing as I only have a MAC and don't think that will work as I tried it many times before. man I wish I was better tech savvy.
hey never mind I had to put my DHC option to ON for the network to work now it's updating can't wait and see what new things will be available on my Amp.
There isn’t much magic about landing wires where they go. Just connect them according to their position in the room. If you need more power, you’ll have to get a bigger amp.

I think you just contradict yourself, I believe in part 3 of this series you said that ARC is bad, bad, BAD! So I’v been wondering what would have you done differently instead of using ARC?
My fault. I didnt do a good job of making that clear. Yes you can use the ARC output but you need to disable the feature. You can do that by disabling HDMI control in your receiver and your TV. Sometimes they call it HDMI CEC. You can find it in the setup menus. Thanks for watching and thanks for the question!
Alan Clegg hi, damn auto correct. Did you find out if the 1st channel can take analog and hdmi ( when you swapped to the third channel in the video), is it the same channel or different ( just labeled the same).
They were the same channel so it was a good thing that I swapped them. It would work on HDMI OR analog video- not both. It's pretty much always that way- same label=same input. Thanks for watching!
I connected the seekers up to the amp a Sony km 7000 and there distorted and when I auto cal it goes through each speaker good but at the end says error 12 can anyone gis a point in right direction
My guess is that the calibration mic is not connected properly. That would account for the Error 12. Distortion on the radio input is possible due to bad antenna signal?
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV how do you adjust the calibration mike. I plugged headphones into the auto calibration mic but nothing happens and the antenna is new and worked good on the other sony
@@jamiebyfield7474 Your receiver should have come with the calibration microphone. It won't work with standard head phones. Just plug it in then set the mic in your favorite listening position then hit start.
Bad advice for folks that have 30ft ceilings. If you have large speakers and subs let the microphone calibrate your system. Don’t mess with the calibration in environments where you have high ceilings. You will go in circles for months.
Quick question to anyone in the comments that can help or is willing to help I’ve been having a hard time trying to connect my Laptop to my TV and have the sound play out of my surround sound system. My fault. I didnt do a good job of making that clear. Yes you can use the ARC output but you need to disable the feature. You can do that by disabling HDMI control in your receiver and your TV. Alan, you are spot on how you present yourself and we do not have to wait for information, you speak quickly and do not put UM between each sentence you give us a lot of information in a short time. You know what you are going to say and keep things going, you keep our interest throughout. Thank You alot!
Actually on most modern 4K tv once you plug your tv in to the Reciever it automatically disables your TV volume and everything is ran thru your Reciever
This requires activating the HDMI control feature which I recommend NOT doing. It’s much better to use a nice universal remote to handle the volume control.
If you have equipment that uses hdmi control the way it is intended it's a piece of cake I use one button to on whatever I would like to use to watch from, then the AVR turns on, sets itself to the right inputs the tv goes on and with the same remote I control everything on my tv , avr and control playback on whatever I am watching. You just set the CEC control on whatever you connect to the avr the right way READ it should not turn off anything or set to standby anything the moment you turn it off only on avr/tv end you should set that option to on.So when you turn off avr or tv everything else turns off too.
Thanks for the comment. When pro remote programmers touch a system, the first thing we do is shut off HDMI CEC. It creates more problems than it's worth. Example: You're watching cable and your daughter wants a movie out of the DVD player so she hits "eject" which turns on the DVD player. This triggers the AVR to switch to that input. You tell her to turn off the DVD player, which in turn, shuts off the whole system. Your cable box doesn't have HDMI CEC so it's still on. Now you have to manually turn the system back on and set the right inputs. Sounds easy for some people, but customers struggle with that, ESPECIALLY when they have guests over that don't know how to use their system. It's way easier and reliable to setup a remote control to control every action that occurs. Any guest can pick up a remote and hit the button that says "Watch TV." Thanks for watching and thanks again or the comment.
I'm assuming you want to connect everything to the TV then go from the TV to the receiver via optical audio or HDMI audio return channel (ARC)? GREAT question and thanks for asking it. Neither the ARC nor optical audio carry the high def surround sound formats such as dolby digital True-HD and such. Those high quality sound formats are just as important as good video quality. Also, connecting to the receiver makes maintenance and adding/subtracting equipment easier. Receivers have video processors in them that can enhance the picture or be bypassed if you wish as well. ARC also creates a nightmare on the custom control side too.
So i just got an older 5.1 surround system. (ADCOM GTP-830 processor and GFA-7400 power amp) I have no previous experience with high end speaker systems. The processor doesn't have Hdmi or anything special for the video side. It does however have digital audio input (optical). So i would like to connect it to my Home theater Pc's optical output and then have the pc run video straight to the Tv without going through the processor unit. Is it as simple as just plugging the Pc's optical out into the processors optical input and just ignoring video input's and outputs of the processor? If anyone is interested the speakers in question are Kef Q95, 2x Kef Q65's, 2x Kef Q 15's. Also got a ADCOM ACE-315 surge protector. (didn't get a subwoofer yet, im not sure if i need one as i'm a noob in the high end audio world) Got the whole system for free from my father because he upgraded. Might as well also ask, What is the point of the surge protector? Is it necessary? What exactly does it do?
Oops! Sorry for the delay. This comment just appeared. Yes, optical from your PC goes into the receiver and don't run video through the receiver. Run it straight to the TV. Good surge protectors do more than protect our equipment from electrical surges. They can also disconnect your system in a LOW power situation which is also dangerous to equipment. They should be made of high quality components that OPEN the electrical circuit when they get hit instead of fusing the circuit CLOSED (which can happen in cheap units). Nice units will also provide different levels of power filtering which helps to wash out phase fluctuations and other power nonsense that makes its way into your system. Power filters help your system sound and look better.
Very good point! There are auto on/off amps out there too that work great so they aren't ON all the time. That's what we use when the whole house is setup on the same zone, and the receiver can't handle the power demands.

Every system is unique to the home owner's situation so it's impossible to make a one-size-fits-all installation guide. This is why my video series teaches you the ins and outs of a home theater system. This way, you can take the information and run with it, hopefully tweaking your system as you grow and technology changes.

It can be connected directly to the receiver or with a connector. Either will work.
Hey thanks!!! I made the video with people like you in mind. Glad to help!
What if you don't have a satellite box just a fire box and want to run 2 zones. how you do a connection to control them separately ? Thanks
Thanks!!

Alan I got no sound and a Yamaha Receiver No hdmi on back and Firestick. Can u help
Awesome video as always, Alan! Thanks again.
I am trying to connect presence speakers (front) into my Yamaha RX V677 Receiver. I gather that I need to enable them. Does that mean I need to move speaker setup from Auto to Manual?
Most likely yes. The receiver needs to know if those speakers are presence or zone 2.
I have SPEAKER WIRE speakers only on my Denon 689, and when I try to clip them in like you do, I still get nothing from my receiver to the speaker. I'm only trying 1 speaker (center) to produce a sound, but I get nothing on A or B.
A and B speakers are only for front left and right speakers so if you’re connected to the center, you shouldn’t get any sound.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV ok.
So I guess I need a refresher course on this. How do I get something out of the center speaker? And then the subwoofer and the rear surround? What options do I have to enable for that?
You can send the speakers test tones. This can be done in the speaker setup menu. Almost all receivers I’ve seen have some type of speaker setup menu.
Also, you can choose a sound field that uses all speakers. Depending on the receiver, this mode can be called “all channel” or “7 channel stereo” or something like that.

Hi Adam
Awesome video!
Just wondering why you are adamant about not using ARC HDMI?
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV the genie has just a coax single port.
That is called digital coax. I can’t speak for the quality of this product but this is something that could work:

Sir I have denon blue ray player in that I have only one HEMI connection how to connect audio through amplifier
I don't get into that type of audio classification. I usually can't tell the difference. Sorry!
Where should I connect my Fire Stick on the TV or the receiver ?
If you want your sound to go through your speakers, connect it to the receiver.

Getting audio OUT of your TV is a little but tricky but it's possible.
1. Use RCA cables to go from the audio OUT on the TV to an input on the receiver. Then go through your TV menus to make sure you're sending audio to the receiver. Usually this is done by turning the speakers off or setting the volume setting to "fixed" instead of "variable."
Thanks.

Does that answer your questions?
what determines a 1 zone vs 2 zone vs 3 zone system?
Zone 1 is your main zone. Zone 2 or 3 can be any other room or location. In a 2/3 zone system, you can watch whatever you want in zone 1 while listening to something completely different in zone 2 or 3.
What does hdmi control do when is on?

OR you can unplug all the cables into the receiver and take it to the router.

when the avr is on, can i control the volume of the movie playing by just turning up the tv volume?
Nope. The volume has to be controlled with the receiver remote or a universal remote that controls the receiver.
Actually on most modern 4K tv once you plug your tv in to the Reciever it automatically disables your TV volume and everything is ran thru your Reciever
This requires activating the HDMI control feature which I recommend NOT doing. It’s much better to use a nice universal remote to handle the volume control.

Great vid ?...amazing job
Cec never works properly, especially when a avr is in the mix, pass... great idea, but implemented poorly!
Why not use the avr hdmi out and plug the devices into the TV? I assume one less connection would be better picture.
Power filters help your system sound and look better.

messing is not the word a nightmare would be a better word
You have to make sure you listen very good and sure that all you connection all connected properly. To get the most quality sound
I wish my wife would let me put a rack in the living room. Nice wiring job. Too many f’ing wires to deal with without a rack.
i WOULD NOT GIVE UP MY WORLD FOR A WIFE
Don’t forget that different zones can have their own amps. The receiver can be, basically a controller.
Very good point! There are auto on/off amps out there too that work great so they aren't ON all the time. That's what we use when the whole house is setup on the same zone, and the receiver can't handle the power demands.
Very simple undstd me thank u
Thank you for watching!
You said to avoid ARC, then literally pligged your tv into ARC. Im so confused now
I did a bad job explaining it. ARC is a feature built into that output. You can use the output just fine but you have to disable the ARC features.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV thx for replying. Do u need to disable arc in every single thing. I will only have projector, avr, maybe bluray, and 4k firestick
@@kdglock4491 THe key feature that needs to be disabled is usually called "HDMI Control." I try to disable it in all devices so there are no rogue devices messing with my system.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV is that in avr or tv, or firestick, or disabled in all
Definitely the TV and Receiver. If you can find it in other devices, turn it off there too.
DUDE RG6 FOR SUB , THAT IS A NO NO. RG59 SHIELDING AND CORE ARE COOPER BUD
I have heard this before and I’ve heard the opposite for long distance. I don’t think anyone could tell the difference with the naked ear one way or another. Thanks for watching though and thanks for the comment.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV Sounds like a challenge to me.. I am able to hear a larger portion of the audio spectrum. I found that, a guy has to start with a 20 amp fues beaker for each amp . Thus 7.1 one needs #10 plus 20 amp beaker .#1. pre-amp, #2 blue ray #3. T.V., #4.center channel amp #5. SUB. channel amp. #6 front speak amp. #7 back speaker amp. #8. mid back speaker amp. #9.computer. #10. play station. #11.reel to reel #12. phono. etc . I added #20. 20 amp beakers to my system amd it changed my life.
do not use youtubes video stabilizer....makes the video look worst.....make me think im drunk in a video game
Here's the problem. I don't even know what that is. I am such a video creating moron. I appreciate the tip and I'll look for it when I post my next video. Thanks for watching and stop drinking while you're in a video game.
happens in GTA V in story mode...its horrible
You lost me when you didn’t put banana plugs for the second zone. Why not?
Thanks for watching! I prefer banana plugs too but a lot of people don’t use them so I wanted to be sure to show people how to use bare speaker wire too.
I can use fibre optic cable for my zone 2 and 3 for tv and Xbox in differnt rooms thats on denon x4200
That's amazing! I was told by a major brand rep that they would never make that possible because it was too expensive and could be solved by having the end-user double connect the devices for zone play. I looked into your receiver and it looks like you're right. Thanks for that info!
Few years late .I do not think it is a good idea to make such tight bends in you'r power cord not good at all. Personally I roll my cords to make a 4 to 6 inch circle then zip tie to a hook on inside of cabinet.
Thanks for the advice!
I got no sound help lol
Did you follow the video? Which device gives no sound?
