I just got a new Pioneer Surround Sound A/V Receiver - VSX-532 for my 66th birthday... I just bought a small white and red male cables to a aux female cable receiver. You put the white and red into a input on your system and it's ready. Unless, of course, it already has an input aux.

@Home Theater Hobbyist So it turns out my bro must have given it a try: both wires (+/-) were twisted together and stuffed into a single connection point 😳 The wires looked like they were pretty thin (18 gauge) so I ended up buying a spool of 99.99% copper 12 gauge. I disconnected everything and I'll give it another go when I get the new wires in the mail.

From what you've said I don't think you need the Yamaha in the chain at all just use the Bose connected to the TV as it is. Then go into the TVs audio menu and select the audio output that the Bose is connected to. Hopefully this helps!
This vid was awesome man!! Just bought a new Onkyo TX-NR686 receiver. Hooking up the speakers to the unit with those Banana Cables would have been so easy. Cheers!
Also, while holding straight button while powering the device on you will get to the advanced options to chose your speakers oms and other hardware options.
Hi man. Have this exact receiver. I don’t have the banana plugs. Do I need to have these to connect it? I heard you’re able to just twist the black and red turn dials and insert the cable and tighten. Is this true? Thanks man I’d appreciate your advise
For anyone troubleshooting surround sound with the actual device here's the steps that I found buried on forums that are not in the instructions. Set Impedance: Look on the back of your speakers and check what Ohm rating they have. With the receiver powered off, hold down the 'Straight' button on the front and power it on. It will take you to the impedance menu automatically. Hit 'Straight' again to select the Ohm rating of your speakers (6 or 8 Ohms) Turn on your HDMI Settings: Hit 'Setup' on your remote to access the HDMI Control menu. Set "HDMI Control " to ON. Set the "TV AUDIO INPUT" to AV2 Set "ARC" to on HDMI control lets you control the Yamaha receiver volume and power with the TV remote. Connect Receiver to Smart TV Plug your HDMI cable into the HDMI ARC port on the back of your TV (Just look for the port that says 'ARC') Plug the other end into the HDMI Out ARC port on the back of the receiver. Go into your smart tv settings and under the sound>Sound Output options select Receiver(HDMI). If you don't have this option then something is not turned on in the HDMI settings steps above. Mine wasn't displaying the receiver option until I turned on 'HDMI Control.' Troubleshooting: While you're watching your program, scroll through the input sources till you hear sound. It could be the TV Audio Input is set to another input. *Keep in mind, if you're streaming, Netflix and Hulu offer different sound options with each show or movie so the surround may be different with literally every show or movie you watch. While watching a program and looking at the receiver input source display you should be able to see the speaker icons for which channel that show or movie is actually using. Netflix's surround sound isn't great. Hulu is better but it doesn't seem to use all speakers. Hope this helps.
A good point to note. Yamaha home theatre in a box, YHT-4950-UBL, includes 385, and 485, receivers, You have to manually set the Ohms to correct setting. (Label on back of Speakers.) The default Ohms setting, is NOT, correct!! It made a huge difference in sound. Some guys don't get into the menu that deep. Just a heads up.
So I’ve had my Yamaha rv-x679 for about three years and it would always go to av3 when I use my ps4 blue ray or fire stick and other things as well. Recently my one year old got her hands on the remote and now the only way I get sound out of everything is if I change it to av4 manually. Usually it would change to av3 by itself when something turned on.. I’m not understanding how to get it back to av3 for sound or change something to where it’s changes to av4 when something is turned on.. any help would be appreciated
That's a hard one and I don't have any great solutions other than factory reset 🙁. Even that is not guaranteed, sorry. Let me know how you solve it when you do. 🙂
Good intro. You could serve big need if you would show how people with hearing problems, for example older people with high frequency hearing losses, can set a modern receiver to add definition and volume at the needed frequencies. Thank you.

Thank You. Good clear basic Information. Great to get a new comer started. Not too much high tec talk with too much detail. People can learn enough detail later if they want.
Thanks for your reply a friend of mine told me to do a hard reset shut the receiver off all the power plug and leave it out for a while I did that and everything works fine now thank you
A great video helped me understand the basics in detail for a novice like me . I would like to check once i have the speaker setup and all running . i would like to find out how will i adjust the sound out put , meaning i dont want to have my surround sound while i am watching general programming like news . Like to know how will i shift between the sound output from surround sound while watching movies , playing games to a general viewing like news etc . Look forward to hear from you
Great video series! I have an older Yamaha HTR 5440 receiver and I want to tweek the Set menu but I'm a bit lost on what the best settings are. Do you have any videos demystifing that? I'd love to learn but can't find anything. Thanks!
I feel the lack of highs in my 5.1 speaker setup. I have onkyo txnr656 av receiver and it supports upto 7.2 setup. I bought a pyle tweeter box which has 4 tweeters in it. Could you please explain me the right way to connect this additional tweeter box to my av receiver so i can listen better highs. Appreciate your help.
If I wanted to connect (2) front bookshelf speakers which which connections on the back would you use? I have the same reciever. What are your speakers of choice?
Where I get hung up is selecting the various options from on the front panel after everything is connected. I have a Marantz stereo with knob selector. Can you explain this for your audience? Thanks.
Watching this at the end of 2018. Is HDMI 2.1 expected to be relevant for the foreseeable future? In the past 16 years or so the HDMI specs have gone through 17 HDMI versions. Anyway, great video! You explained what other audio channels neglect.
I totally understand what you're saying, there have been a lot of HDMI specs! I think 2.1 will be viable for a while since true 8k content is still pretty far out there. Most 4k movies are not 4k all the way through the pipeline. They are shot in 4k, Hollywood works with a 2k digital intermediate, then it's converted back to 4k. The 2k intermediate is due to the fact that not all of the tools used in editing are ready for 4k. I said all that to say, I doubt Hollywood is any where near ready to produce 8k content using a totally 8k pipeline. Not to mention distribution, do we have the bandwidth to stream 8k? Will there be a disc format? What about traditional broadcasting? Their still broadcasting in 1080. Overall there are lots of things that need to be addressed before 8k is any where near mainstream.
Upper left hand corner on back panel is not USB, it is 12 V trigger to operate a relay to turn on power when a specific input or all inputs are operating
Home Theater Hobbyist. No responce except for the same tutorial that will not explain how to get my unit to display true hd or Dd or sorround sound or pcm and so on
I own the TSR-700. It has really good sound, and a 4k picture. I am very pleased with my purchase. The TSR-700 series is the same as the RX-V6A. It is totally special needs adult owned. Always well taken care of. I love Yamaha receivers. Airbus A320's is my hobby. I am a big fan of Dolby Atmos as well.
great video. but i have a question.. i have a modern hisense tv and a older yamaha 6030 the tv have 3 hdmi ports the receiver has no HDMI ports..i have a hdmi to 3 rca jacks cable but i cant get video from my dvd/cd player only sound.. what am i doing wrong? Im pretty sure the tv is set up right , i have it set to HDMI (ARC) 1 i get sound from the dvd player to the receiver but nothing to the tv..
I am connecting a Denon AVR S760H that has 7 hdmi ports on the back. My question is if I connect every item I have through the HDMI ports on the receiver and one HDMI ARC out to the tv do I have to always have my receiver and surround sound on or can I still watch connected items through the tv without receiver on.
I have a very similar receiver and have been trying to get the ARC feature to work with my Samsung UN55MU6290 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV. I have been through all the manuals, configured and re-configured all of the settings and still get no audio out of the tv into the receiver. You've probably heard of this issue before but its makes the SmartTV features basically useless so in our case we are using an older SONY BlueRay player to acccess Amazon and other video services. Any suggestions?
The red and black caps on the terminals unscrew. Once unscrewed there are holes in the terminal and you place the bare speaker wire in the holes and re-screw the caps in place.
I have a LG surround sound system with a blu ray 3d player it requires a hdmi to connect to the tv.. And I have a samsung bar with subwoofer connected to my tv and it requires a optical cord to hear it I play both of them while watching movies.. Is there anyway I can get one of these and hear it with the rest of them by using a hdmi cord or headphone line cord?
Very informative, I am glad UA-cam recommended this video right when I bough my speakers and my amplifier, I just wish someone see this comment and could guide me through the whole process of hooking all up. Please, anyone....
I just bought and connected a new Yamaha RX-V685. I have everything working except I haven't been able to figure out how to assign different activities to a customized Scene. The reason I bought the receiver is I need to have my Netflix and Sat TV audio adjusted specifically for dialogue, i.e. emphasis on higher frequencies, minimal base. Then for DVD and Radio I want full hifi with lots of base and all frequency ranges. Specifically on the RX-V685 how do I set up these Scenes? The owners manual is not very helpful. Thanks!
Hi, I have attached a usb with movies to the front usb port, i get the menu to choose the movies, when i choose a movie i hear the sound but can't get the picture??
How can I hook up speakers that take a 1/4 inputs cables? Set up is 2 DJ speakers and a Turntable I got a split Banana cable to 1/4 male and tried that- nothing. Using primarily a turntable.
I liked this video, good, simple, detailed information to demystify the process. I have a question that I think I know the answer to, but I would like confirmation or NOT: I like my two speaker (Wharfedale towers) + subwoofer (Boston Acoustics) setup, but my receiver needs replacement and I need to know if I can use a multichannel AV Receiver with that setup or do I need to stick with a 2.1 channel stereo receiver?
Hello, I have my computer connect to Yamaha RX-V371 via HDMI and it sounds great ...... what I cannot figure out is how to get output so I can recored to external tape deck / reel to reel. Do I have to use the HDMI out? Is there no amp passthrough to the RCA monitor out from a HDMI input.
If I understand your question I don't think this will work with a receiver because the receiver is not sending audio to your computer only receiving it.
Hi, Tks for uploading the video. Somehow I still can't get my Pioneer VSX-924 to connect with my TV via ARC. The TV's ARC HDMI ARC output works fine with a soundbar so it has to be my Pioneer receiver. Does it matter which input I plug in? I have tried almost all inputs and have turned on the ARC via System settings/HDMI settings. But when I go to my Input Settings and go donw, I don't see ARC on any inputs. Only TV has optical and CD has Coaxial/Optical. So I'm using an optical cable for sound at the moment. Was wondering if you could help me out. Tks
I have the yamaha 2080 and the entire pioneer elite atmos speakers in 5.2.4. Why when I run the YAPO setup do I get wiring errors on 3 of the speakers? Took my time setting this receiver up making sure red to red and black to black twice before moving to the next speaker. I even checked the connections again after YAPO was ran and everything is connected correctly. Could this be due to sound reflections in the room?
They can do similar things but probably not better because they probably only have enough amplification to drive the speakers within the TV not external speakers. An AVR also can decode the latest formats for AV while TVs tend to lack behind.
I think one of the kids has pressed something on one of my remotes by accident,,not sure what’s happened but the sound has gone awful on my tv sound,,,what’s the best setting to have on you Yamaha receiver for tv
We have the same Av receiver. We would like to connect a microphone to sing along with youtube karaoke videos. Any idea to set it up? thanks in advance!
I didn't get much from the video. You hooked up some sort of input device and then the TV, but how do you send the signal from the input to the TV? I want to know how to hook up AND PLAY my VHS, CD/DVD player, turntable, cassette player, etc.
Once everything is connected, use the AV remote and select the source you want to play. That should send the audio to your speakers and the video to the TV
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist Isn't it a little more involved than that? Use the AV remote FROM YOUR RECEIVER to select the source of the signal, (e.g. DVD player, turntable, cassette) then with the TV remote, choose the input device, which would be the Receiver. There is nothing automatic or simple about it.
For the sources (such as a DVD player) that use digital connections (HDMI and Digital Optical) you’ll need to connect your to your TV using a digital cable such as HDMI. We’ll call that TV input 1 for this discussion. For the sources (VCR) that use analog connections (RCA cables, Component video) you’ll need to connect to your TV using component video cables. We’ll call that TV input 6 for this discussion. For your digital inputs, DVD player, select the correct source on your AVR and TV input1, press play on the source then you’ll see video. For your analog inputs, VCR, select the correct source on your AVR, TV input 6, press play on the source then you’ll select the corresponding video. For your audio only sources CD player, turntable, etc. turn the tv off and connect to the AVR with the analog cables. Select the correct source on the AVR, press play on the source and listen.
I have a Yamaha HTR-6130 and I have gotten all the speakers and woofer working. My problem is that even though I can hear sound coming from all the channels, it does not show that all the channel/speaker indicators are working on the display. The only two that are indicating are FL and FR. The only time all the indicators display is when I am testing the channels in the basic setup procedure. The other issue is that the decibel indicator numbers go down as I turn up the volume. Aren't the numbers supposed to rise as the volume rises?
I have almost the same Yamaha receiver only mine is only 5.1 I can get sound from the TV, but when i use the Netflix App from the TV, the sound only comes out the TV speakers??? Any idea on setup.. (tried Optical cable, and also have HDMI going from TV to receiver and ARC is turned on )
That’s weird! I doubt this will work but maybe look at the Netflix settings to see if an adjustment there would work. Sounds like you tried everything else.
What are your views on sonos connect amp? I thought it was versatile but it limits me to the app as I'm unable to connect to all content on my phone especially youtube.....which is a deal breaker for me!
How can I make a 5.2 system with powered studio monitors, particularly 3 jbl mkll 308p’s as L.R.C, 2 jbl mkll 305p’s surround L.R, and 2 LSR310S, I can’t find anything online about setting up a powered monitor sound system
Hi sir, I have a Yamaha 583 receiver hooked up to Boston acoustics a 25 bookshelves and cs 225cll as center. My question is can I run tower speakers with this receiver (5.1 setup) , since there's not much power in the receiver. And should I run the same brand of speakers or could I use klipsch r26 or r28 towers along with Boston bookshelves and center. I appreciate your help. Thanks
Yes you can run the tower speakers but I wouldn't run them at reference level. I recommend running the same brand as much as possible because when you change brands there is the potential for noticeable tonal shifts in the audio. If you plan to purchase the Klipsch center in the future then go ahead with the klipsch fronts but if not stick with the same brand. Enjoy!👍🏾
12 gage cable is waythicker then you need for most aplications 16 is even pushing it. There are online calculators that will give you the actual required thickness.
Great video, clear explanation. Getting my first smart tv. I’m guessing I should dump my 2003 Sony Receiver for one w HDMI connections? It has optical input, I have been using the composite cable system since I bought it, but it may not do what I want. Any input?
Thanks! Yes I’d upgrade the receiver mainly so you can get the benefits of lossless audio (Dolby True HD/DTS Master Audio) and 3D audio (Dolby Atmos/DTS:X) if you have overhead speakers. Not sure on your budget but make sure your new receiver supports 4K UHD, HDR formats (HDR10, Dolby Vision) and 3D Audio formats (Atmos and DTS:X). Hope this helps!
I’ll get a receiver w those attributes, and thanks for that detailed response, I would not have known what to look for. The last one gave me 15(?) years, so spending a little more is worth it.
Since you’re knowledgeable I’ll bet there are advertisers w good products you could recommend and get paid to do so. You’ve got a good, clear presentation style.
I’ve had really good success with Yamaha receivers. Their Aventage line has a higher build quality so I recommend those. The other thing I forgot to mention is HDMI 2.1. That spec was released about 1 year ago and I expect receivers to begin shipping with at least 1 HDMI 2.1 port in 2019, (LG published a press release today stating their 2019 TVs will support 2.1, so it’s coming). I talked about 2.1 features in this video, ua-cam.com/video/9Xbai1uplaY/v-deo.html If you want to be as future proof as possible in 2019 it may be worth picking up a receiver that supports the 2.1 specification. Thanks for the compliments, it means a lot! I’m striving to make things easy and clear so we can all enjoy our systems!
I found out that if you use both speaker channels set a and b the minimum impedance the receiver can handle is doubled meaning if the minimum impedance for the left and right channels is 8 ohms then the minimum impedance becomes 16 ohms because when you wire speakers up to speaker channels set a and b your cutting the impedance in half that's usually why on av receivers it will say 8 ohms set a or b and 16 ohms set a and b.
In most receivers there’s a zone 2 option in the menu system. So you assign a pair of speakers to zone 2 outputs and play in another room. Receivers are also doing wireless systems like Sonos. Denon’s wireless system is called HEOS while Yamaha’s version is called MusicCast
Finally, the one detail I was looking about external connections, explained. I want to buy a receiver to connect from my blu-ray to and older projector (that has HDMI input, but no ARC). So basically, I would connect the BR output to the receiver input (HDMI), get the digital sound through my speakers and video output to my projector? That's what I would think, correct me if I'm wrong. Anyways, awesome video bro. Thanks!
thanks soooo much was struggling for months trying to figure out the speaker wiring and came across your video and within minutes had it working ....you are a lifesaver!!

This vid was awesome man!! Just bought a new Onkyo TX-NR686 receiver. Hooking up the speakers to the unit with those Banana Cables would have been so easy. Cheers!
Thanks for watching! How do you like the Onkyo so far?
I love it! Sounds Great and I haven't even tweaked it out yet. Wish I had those Banana Cables man. I've never heard of them till this. Cheers
Is there a way to connect to receivers together
You have a great voice for presentation.
Thanks!
Also, while holding straight button while powering the device on you will get to the advanced options to chose your speakers oms and other hardware options.
Great video. How do I adjust the brightness on my display for a str dg500
Like the video easy to follow, would like to hear more of similar contact
Thank you!
Hi man. Have this exact receiver. I don’t have the banana plugs. Do I need to have these to connect it? I heard you’re able to just twist the black and red turn dials and insert the cable and tighten. Is this true? Thanks man I’d appreciate your advise
That's true, just put the speaker wire through the terminal holes (make sure they don't touch each other) and twist to lock them in place. 😁
Thank you! You’re awesome man. We appreciate you!
For anyone troubleshooting surround sound with the actual device here's the steps that I found buried on forums that are not in the instructions.
Set Impedance:
Look on the back of your speakers and check what Ohm rating they have. With the receiver powered off, hold down the 'Straight' button on the front and power it on. It will take you to the impedance menu automatically. Hit 'Straight' again to select the Ohm rating of your speakers (6 or 8 Ohms)
Turn on your HDMI Settings:
Hit 'Setup' on your remote to access the HDMI Control menu.
Set "HDMI Control " to ON.
Set the "TV AUDIO INPUT" to AV2
Set "ARC" to on
HDMI control lets you control the Yamaha receiver volume and power with the TV remote.
Connect Receiver to Smart TV
Plug your HDMI cable into the HDMI ARC port on the back of your TV (Just look for the port that says 'ARC')
Plug the other end into the HDMI Out ARC port on the back of the receiver.
Go into your smart tv settings and under the sound>Sound Output options select Receiver(HDMI). If you don't have this option then something is not turned on in the HDMI settings steps above. Mine wasn't displaying the receiver option until I turned on 'HDMI Control.'
Troubleshooting: While you're watching your program, scroll through the input sources till you hear sound.
Hope this helps.
son, that receiver's as big as you!! Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. Enjoyed the video.
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Fantastic Help for setting up a home theater system - Video will help and teach you along the way Thanks So Much - Keep Posting
Thanks for watching and commenting! Enjoy your system!
Thanks
Great video, clear instructions. Thank you.

Good intro. You could serve big need if you would show how people with hearing problems, for example older people with high frequency hearing losses, can set a modern receiver to add definition and volume at the needed frequencies. Thank you.
That's good point! I'll see what I can do to address that need!
Good Job Sir.. Its been a While Scince I Set up a Modern Stereo , in the 70's ( Praise God ).. Thanks Man !🎸 Happy Easter Season.. I Am Partying ..😇 - UncLe MyLes + edm.Ab. Can

Thankyou..nice video. I just bought the Yamaha 271 but through optic I dont see dts confirmed in the AV window? Any advice?
Thank You. Good clear basic Information. Great to get a new comer started. Not too much high tec talk with too much detail. People can learn enough detail later if they want.
Thanks!! Enjoy your new setup! And come back anytime to check out the latest videos!

Excellent video I Have a problem I have a Pioneer Elite SC-81 I hooked up correctly with HDMI cables but only get a blue screen on TV
Try another HDMI cable, that one maybe damaged.
Thanks for your reply a friend of mine told me to do a hard reset shut the receiver off all the power plug and leave it out for a while I did that and everything works fine now thank you
I think it's time you upgrade your TV man!
On another note, great explanation on this topic. Thumbs up!
Thanks! I do have a 4K TV now but I still like my Plasma! ua-cam.com/video/0GIaHRkhvWg/v-deo.html
Nice video. You're a good teacher
Thank you!
Can you show me how to hook up an iPod to a RX620 and what settings the front panel should be set at pleased.
Thanks!
Dude you’re the man!! Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Glad to help!
Very good explanation. I need you to show how to put it on and operate. thanks
Great video. Easy to follow. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Helped me a lot
Happy to help!
Great quick overview. I'd love it if you got into all the speaker connections and the difference between them.
Thanks!
If I wanted to connect (2) front bookshelf speakers which which connections on the back would you use? I have the same reciever.
What are your speakers of choice?
Very nice Tutorial. Great Job..
Thanks!
How do you hook up a second zone and control it from the remote control. I have a pair of speakers outdoors that I would like to play
I appreciate the explanation.
Awesome!
Great video you cleared a lot of things up for me
Thanks for watching!
Where I get hung up is selecting the various options from on the front panel after everything is connected. I have a Marantz stereo with knob selector. Can you explain this for your audience? Thanks.
Nice answer eh?
A very good video you made it so simple great job...Thank you
You’re welcome, happy to help!
Very interesting.
A lot of the new recievers are no longer having a USB input port on the front.
This means that I cannot play my mp3's on them!
Great job. Keep up the good work!
Thanks
Sir , nice Explained..Sir I have request .please give full demo with all connection
That's one huge unit. But you covered the basics very well. Thanks.
+Jet Fan Thanks!
Home Theater Hobbyist. No responce except for the same tutorial that will not explain how to get my unit to display true hd or Dd or sorround sound or pcm and so on
The eco was of so i turned it on is that what i should do ? Thank you for your responce
I was thinking the Eco mode should be off. Maybe Google this issue for your receiver to determine if others have had the same issue
I've seen bigger
I have a Yamaha RX-V350. Where do you put the red and white cables from the TV on to the receiver?
Excellent video.
Thank you very much!
A very helpful video. Thanks, now I know what to do with my speakers I was given!
Awesome!
I see two ports for the subwoofers are they considered two channels? Where of course they play sound independently like stereo does?
No, they’re two outputs for the same signal. Good question. 🙂
I have hooked up my speakers to this same receiver but I get no sound coming out
Same thing happening to me right now, did you sort it out? Could you please help me out?
Thanks for the lesson . Much appreciated.
My pleasure!
Very good video. It was informative and useful. The one question I have is how to you connect the speakers without banana plugs?
The red and black caps on the terminals unscrew. Once unscrewed there are holes in the terminal and you place the bare speaker wire in the holes and re-screw the caps in place.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist ok thank you I'll try it out tonight
THANKS again this worked on my RXV683 also.
Sweet!
Set up is 2 DJ speakers and a Turntable
I got a split Banana cable to 1/4 male and tried that- nothing.
Yes, you can use a multi-channel receiver for a 2.1 setup and it will work great! What are you thinking about purchasing?
Great explanation!
Thanks
Tks
The HDMI arc input should be marked as “ARC” and that’s the only one that will work properly.
Nice. Just a question ive seen TVs that have similar connections to an AV receiver, does that mean that they can do a similar (or even better) job?
They can do similar things but probably not better because they probably only have enough amplification to drive the speakers within the TV not external speakers. An AVR also can decode the latest formats for AV while TVs tend to lack behind.
Tech-Heads, I love them! Great presentation my brother.😊👍
Thank you!
I don’t think that’s possible with this receiver, sorry 😐.
Can you hook up powered speaker such as Rokit 5 KRK?
How do i connect the sonny DVD home theater system DAV-TZ140 to the very Yamaha amplifier you illustrated with?
Thanks, can you send me a link to the calculators?
Great video, clear explanation. Getting my first smart tv. I’m guessing I should dump my 2003 Sony Receiver for one w HDMI connections? It has optical input, I have been using the composite cable system since I bought it, but it may not do what I want. Any input?
And yes, yours was a very clear explanation, thanks.
Any idea how to setup multi room audio? I have wires connected but not sure how to play songs on one and tv output on the 7.2 channel component.
Thanks!
Yes that should work! Thanks for watching!
Would you know how to use Bluetooth headphones with the RX 679 receiver? Can't find what should be basic info. Thanks
I’m not sure, sorry.
