I just found out that the rca splitter i'm using from my amplifier (with 2 sub outs) was the culprit for having ground loop humming sound, then i got a single thicker rca cable plugged it to one of my amplifier's sub outs going to my active sub's LFE port and it solved my problem right away. One of my happiest days ever. 😄
Hey...just wanted to say, excellent info!! I came here for a quick refresher on rca connections,.....and ended up watching the whole video. You would be a very good teacher, if you are not already. Easy laymans terms and great comparisons or analogies for everyone to understand!! Good Job!!
I just used coaxial cable for my active sub and the humming gone. It's a pretty long cable like 45 feet long and it just works fine. Coaxial cable might be a budget solution for those who don't want to buy some expensive subwoofer cables.
Excellent help. Thank you. I only have 2 tower speakers & want to add a sub to my Onkyo TX-NR696 Receiver. Sub (Sony SA-CS9) came with a RCA connector but is very thin. I guess i need a more robust cable for quality sound. I do NOT have a input for a XLR cable.
There was a job 20 year ago. A hotel had a fire alarm and was picking up EMF. From the high power lines going over the building on 3 rd floor. It was a brand new wire to reinstall shielded wire but was o much for them. 2 Nd opinion was to buy rolls and rolls of Tinfoil. 2 on fire alarm wire and only ground 1 side to ground. To bleed the EMF way to ground. The tinfoil is the same stuff that in shielded wire. And again in shielded wire only to ground 1 end to ground if both side grounded it makes antenna I still remember we charge customers tinfoil and it work excellent.
Question, in my case I’m using a LFE output on the back of my preamp and want to add a second sub can I split that or do I need to split RCA’s to do that?
Great info. I have a 2-part question. #1 I have a powered sub. I am connecting it via the speaker input terminals. If I add a pair of speakers to the sub's speaker output terminals, will the subwoofer still operate correctly, (using its internal crossover), and #2, will the added pair of speakers play at full-range frequencies coming from the amplifier?
How can you tell if my sub is susceptible to summing? I have an SVS SB1000 Pro and I have my gain on the sub all the way up, as well as the volume on the AVR for the sub all the way up. I'm using the LFE only hookup for my sub. Should I use the splitter?
This video is EXCELLENT! I'm pretty green at this and a the info you shared as very clear. I just bought a JBL Stage 120 500W sub so I'm trying to find a good cable. I don't believe xlr is an option. I watched a video today on PSAUDIO channel where he suggests not using the pre-amp out to a powered sub. He said connecting it to an active output on the receiver conveys a better sound than by usubg the regular sub out connection. That was very confusing to me so I'm just goung to connect it to the pre out sub.
I agree with Mr McGowan (PSAudio), I have tested both pre outs and speaker (high level) connections to a SVS sub and the speaker connection sounds better (in part because of the subs crossover) in a stereo setup. I think it depends on the speaker wire gauge and isolation. But in multichannel configuration it is better to let the DSP figure out the low frequency signal, so LFE it is.
Great video. I'd like to ask a question. I have powered bookshel speakers (edifiers) and my laptop with a headphone jack. No sub out connection. I just got a Sony SA-CS9 powered subwoofer that has only bare wire connections. Can I connect the following: Headphone to 4 banana plugs into the Sub In (L/R) > Then > 2 Banana to RCA to pass through to the Aux in on the Edifier speakers. I hope this makes sense and thanks for any assistance.
Excellent information, and well presented. Thanks. Question: I'm considering adding a subwoofer output from my Naim Unity Atom streamer. Would using the preamp out or simply connecting to the speaker terminals be a better option? Or is there a better option? Any advice would be appreciated.
I'm a bit late but still...the advice I've been given is to go with speaker terminals for better integration with the other speakers. All speakers get the same signal with better timing.
I have a few RF/EMI filters and filter chokes? I have some expensive RCA cable with Earth connection on RCA cable. I was thinking RF/EMI filter in the 240 volt input in the subwoofer? Any reply appreciated.
I’m hoping you or someone can help answer this question for me: I own a Behringer VQ1500d Powered PA Subwoofer. I also have a Denon AVR-S540BT receiver that I’m going to use for my home theater. Is it possible/safe to connect my Behringer subwoofer with xlr inputs to my receiver’s subwoofer Pre OUT?
Greetings! The amplifier (2.0) does not have a separate Subwoofer output, but does have an "RCA R\L Line Out." Question: whether subwoofers with an input connection are suitable - "RCA R\L In" or "Sub in" (one RCA input plug), as I understand it, I will need to use the "Y" RCA splitter. Did I get it right? Or are BOTH connectivity options suitable?
Sometimes i hear pops from my svs pb2000 and hsu vtf2 mk4 when I pause/ play movie. But those pops are gone when I upgraded to sb16 ultra. Might have to do with the noise filters you talked about
Trying to connect to a wireless active Polk DSB2 subwoofer to a different brand soundbar (Zvox). The only cord that is connected to the subwoofer is the power cord... it has no input or output jacks. My soundbar, ZVox AV155 does have pin plug output jack for it's intended subwoofer. Any ideas on how to connect the soundbar to the wireless Polk DSB2 subwoofer...??
I've seen people recommending speaker wires over rca. Their reasoning was they both pick up noise the same but noise affects the low level signal (rca) much more than the high level signal so signal to noise ratio on the speaker wires would be better. Does that make any sense?
We should be using Fiber optics on everything. Signal from prosser to amp, amp to speaker. Not Toslink but full 2 way fiber optics. Other option is HDMI cabling. 4k or 10k this leads me back to Fiber optics.
Hi There CO Guy Stuff, very helpful video-thank you! I am hoping to purchase a subwoofer to use with my Yamaha NS10 monitors in a small home studio setting. Do you have any recommendations for a good subwoofer that would perhaps compliment them? A lot of subwoofers seem to be geared towards the home theatre setting and therefore tend to only use rca connectors, but I am hoping to find a subwoofer that uses xlr, trs or dual ts. I will be connecting it to a monitor controller that has trs (single) output. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
Plenty use balanced XLR, but you won't find anything good using unbalanced TRS jacks, no. Nothing besides maybe some low end computer stuff. You just have to get over a certain quality/price threshold for XLR to be common. Like speaker level is on most low end, XLR stays on the higher. But, since you are using unbalanced, all you have to use is an RCA adaptor if what you find doesn't have it. No difference.
I have no dedicated sub outlet on my amp, could I connect banana plug to rca converter lead ,to a rca lead ,then the rca to the rca outlet on the sub .The banana plugs to the b speaker outlet ?
One quick question, the wireless connection from emotiva, have you tried that one? I bought some emotiva amps and got a free wireless subwoofer connector. Also is there any difference when using a Y splitter off the wireless to both of the subs inputs, not just the LFE or is it the same as running a wire from the amp to a Y splitter?
I did not try the Emotiva. It depends on the sub, some have a summing input, others don't. The specs may indicate it if so, not always. Sometimes you just have to try and see.
Too funny - I use that same soundbar under a different name, on a couple of my parents old TVs! Unfortunately no, there is no way to use a sub with it.
hmmmm...can one add a component to the x-over, to totally-cut-off below 70Hz...maybe?!! can one use 14-guage normal house wiring, for speaker connections?? tanx!!
@@White_King using an adapter at either end will drop one of the three wires from the xlr and only give two wires to the speaker... thus defeating the purpose. Any noise in the cable would not be polarized out as the balanced third wire information is not given to the speaker to do its thing.
Hello , I ordered a pair of RCA cable for 35 feet for my speakers as well as a single RCA at 20 ft for my sub, I paid around 1000 dollars for these cables as they are hand made with special care, I would like to know what is the best practice for dragging these cables along base board . Can I put them into an sleeve and run both cables across the room ? Is there going to be interference from one to the other ? Or as long as they are not power cables , I should be fine . Thanks
Don't forget to leave the cables I to the freezer for 36 hours b4 putting g them into a sleeve, the sound from this is unbelievably xtal clear..just like having a new pair of ears.
Actually raising the cables off the ground using a 3inch gap between the floor and wire. Throw some Black wire protection/shield over the wire cut 2 15 ft lengths and your getting the best non interference signal you can get. Especially on wood floors.
I leave my subwoofer on BUT with a smart switch that turns them off when they aren't being used. I've been woken up in the middle of the night by failing or wonky subs in the past. Not a pleasant way to wake up.
The SVS Soundpath wireless adapter kit just simply sucks. I have one in my 12ftx12ft bedroom and I wanted to use it to cutout wires and every time I walk by it the signal drops and sometimes it doesn’t pick the signal back up until I move the receiver around ( SVS receiver). This adapter is horrible.

Yep, some splitters are not grounded properly, or in the way the particular sub needs.

Yes..... Not so much on volume but the frequency it helps a lot. Especially with Audio.

Unfortunately not none of that is a match.
So can you tell me do you use a surge protector or plug directly into wall outlet since subs have their own dedicated fuse inside them?
Surge protectors are always a good idea.
So I have a receiver with a SUB out (RCA), but a passive subwoofer. What is the best way to connect it? Buy a small mini amplifier for the subwoofer?
It completely depends on the subwoofer, what it's power requirements and thus required amp, is.
What about coaxial connection?
That is how mine is connected using the RCA adapter tip. The run is 30ft.

Does it cause too much of a load on the receiver or subwoofer?
Y splitters are fine, I use one to power two subs. Some have 2 sub outputs and that's how some are able to have 4 subwoofers.
