  • The final stop on our Liverpool tour is Royal Albert Dock. Initially opened in 1846, it was the first structure in the UK to be constructed out of brick, stone and cast iron. It was originally used as a store for valuable cargoes like tea, cotton, silk, sugar and tobacco. From the late 1940s to the late 1970s the area was neglected and in need of major repairs. In 1981 a major renovation project began which opened in 1984. The area was even used as the studio for popular British daytime TV show 'This Morning' from 1988 until 1996. Today the Royal Albert Dock is home to many shops, restaurants and office space, as well as the Tate art gallery which opened in 1988.
