I like to use wax and grease first then waterborne when doing final cleaning just cause we don’t have a stat gun. Waterborne neutralizes most of the static especially on raw bumpers imo 👍🏼

Do you de nib waterborne base after your first coat? Ive generally had issues doing so as on silvers applying more base to cover the sanded denibs results in mottling or a rough surface as most waterborne base doesnt like being applied over itself once it has dried. ?
Having used PPG Water and BASF Water I never had an issue sanding the base after the first coat. What line are you using ?
@RefinishMedia thanks for the reply, I have not tried ppg but I I'm using spies hecker, also had the same issue with most axalta waterborne. I have briefly tried basf and I do remember it being less of an issue
@@luketruman5153spies, axalta and standox water are pretty much identical products. and that’s a common issues with those lines. can be a major pain to nib and reapply base.
I do. But I’ve had similar issue to you. Always use 2000 now and rub in same direction.
@@luketruman5153 basf waterborne 90-line and up i know for a fact have no issues with sanding base between coats
When I switched to cleaning with microfibers instead of towels it was a huge game changer way cleaner paint jobs

What is the the reason for not removing the headlight?
It’s was loosened up and recessed so we were able to back tape behind the fender

I use nearly identical systems and got a good laugh at “air hockey “ as I used it as well and yes it works and never had any issues.

I'm wondering what grit paper was used in the video re blend area on front guard ?
I've been using matting past and gray scotch pad so scratches don't come up but then I'd be painting over orange peel.
The blend area is 800 grit. Sealer area is 400 and just basecoat area is 600grit

I agree 100% but one more step I take is a solvent clean with a grey scuff pad to remove all the solvent Soluble products like road tar etc. because even the best waterborne cleaners will not eliminate them! Been painting for almost 40 years and I’m still learning because I love what I do!

I always wear gloves for prepping because the first shop I worked at the Painter would say if the preppers don’t wear gloves 🧤 we’re going to contaminate the panels or get fish eyes lol 😂

Trick i learned from another painter: after final wipe down with waterborne lightly wet a fresh towel with anti static cleaner and use it like a tack rag to pick up any leftover particulates. The towel is just damp so it doesn’t wet the panel this time. Then tack with anti static tack cloths and spray

On step 2 for sanding what grit size of sandpaper do you use?
It’s very dependent on what paint you are using and what products. But in our case it is 800 for the blend area. 240 block then 400 for the primer.
HI MATE I HAVE A FORD FOCUS MK3 TITANIUM X THE BONNET OR THR HOOD NEEDS PAINTING AND SO DOES THE WINGS OR FENDERS BUT I CARNT GET A PAINT MATCH AND I NEVER DONE A BLEND BEFORE 😉
What’s the proper way to clean the primer before base coat? I’ve seen many people saying to do not use wax and grease in that step and glass cleaner instead, but mine is colourful and I think it will mess the paint up. Can I use wax and grease safely?
80 percent of the time wax and grease is good. Endless you’re working with a polyester primer. Then you there’s a debate, but if you wax and grease that you have to be cautious to gas it off very well. If you have already used a solvent cleaner before prep then using a waterborne cleaner is okay too.

I don’t tack my final coat of base especially if it’s metallic.

Check out WCC in Ann Arbor and check out the ABR program. All of these steps are gone over in the program. Lots of great tips and tricks that no one else will tell you, plus the right way to paint.

Post your “how to” videos! 😂. R&I’s are a body operation, this is a “how to” around painting. How does it take away from their video? If you knew what you were talking about, you could tell that the headlight was loosen up so they could properly back tape that headlight area. This is a common trick on some vehicles in the collision industry. But yet here you are. 😢

I'm having issues with respirator. Just when clear coating,I feel like I'm extra careful with making sure my mask is sealed,shaved my beard and all. Still getting in my lungs somehow
Yeah i know. We can’t recommend a respirator for products that are 2k. You have to go supplied air to be safe. We want to get it too.
@RefinishMedia thanks for all the tips,been a real big help for this 52 year old rookie. I started working at a restoration shop here in S.Carolina about a year ago. I had no idea how much work was involved in a paint job til now. thanks again for helping a old dog learn new tricks!
Is there a supplied air respirator that you do recommend?
From the experience I have with them the Sata and the 3M full helmet are great choices. But more importantly is the air compressor,filtration, and air monitor. Keeping the air safe to breathe is a priority.

I have 37 years in the booth and still doing collision painting in a 30,000ft MSO. Great video with some great info . I would like to add a couple of old school tricks . Using a chain to ground the vehicle ( can even connect a cable to your ground rod in the shop) This next one is before you spray your glory clear coat , drop your pressure and carefully mist clear on your masking material . This acts like flypaper and locks anything down that you missed . Then hammer on your 2 coats of clear and get out of the booth .
