    I like the idea of this mod for trying to turn new players on to the game (my wife tried morrowind and couldn't get past the combat), but it would break my new favorite build (unarmed, unarmored; you rely on the enemy missing when you chip down their fatigue, and this would make them just kill you anyway).

    Props to the mod author for doing an amazing job, this will defenitely appeal to new players, i just have a problem with how easily "cheeseable" the fights are.. the insane speed boost and damage boost are kind of a dealbreaker for me, if it was me making the mod i would have definitely reduced damage to compensate for the fact that there is no "miss and dodge" mechanism, and i would definitely not boost speed as it allows players to just dive in, hit, backpedal and dodge...
    Despite that i can see how it would make some fights harder especially for new players

    I play this mod with the speed boost disabled. I love it to bit, and that's how I recommend it.
    Feels just perfect that way, I honestly feel the speed boost shouldn't have been enabled by default because of how it janks up animations and makes kiting such an easy tactic/exploit. When installing this mod I recommend taking the moment to disable the speed tweaks- vanilla movement honestly isn't that bad once you embrace the atmosphere (I'm a newer player) and it truly lets the mod (and by extension much of morrowind's original combat design) really shine once freed from the chance to hit shackles.

      @@HomingAsatoMassok so in other table tops(which is what morrowind and daggerfall are they are just digital) there is usually a combat log which if you miss tells you things like enemy blocked or enemy dodged. You ate supposed to imagine what a realistic fight would look like so in game I'm swinging at a guy with a spear and hitting every 5 times but in my head he's blocking, dashing and dodging. The game doesn't tell you these things you just have to imagine them.
      This gets better as yiu level up. At 100 you will it 95% of your swings this makes you feel like you mastered the weapons you picked or trained up.
      That is also important you need to pick weapons if a dude who had been streetfighting with his fists his whole life picked up a claymore he wouldn't know how to use it.

    • @HomingAsatoMass
      @HomingAsatoMass 3 місяці тому +1

      @jackrabbit7789 I think the difference is that actual tabletop games don't really allow for any alternative to imagination. As an analog medium, there's only so much you can do to represent real-life actions in the game. This is not the case for digital games however. Game developers are able to create mechanics that actually put you in the shoes of your character, ideally making you feel the same way your character would. Things like lack of practice with a certain weapon type can still be represented in a more action-based gameplay system, you'd just alter the attack animation and damage, making it easier for the AI to predict and deal with your attacks. This way, you are the one failing or succeeding at a given task, thus becoming your character.

    • @jackrabbit7789
      @jackrabbit7789 3 місяці тому

      @@HomingAsatoMass true but this was one of the first truly 3d role playing games and was made in 2003 so I don't think that animations and alternatives like that would have been possible for an at the time dieing studio

      @jackrabbit7789 yeah I'm not going to fault Bethesda for it. Morrowind is certainly one of the better games they have made, if not the best, even with its combat not being very good.

    People that have issues with missing attacks and spellcasting, it isn't because the system is too old. It's because the player needs to understand Elder Scrolls isn't Dark Souls. If you swing with a dagger and your character has minimum Short Blade skill, you're not going to successfully hit anything. That isn't because the game needs to be "brought into the modern era," but rather the player needs to rethink what their character skills mean. This isn't better combat, it's artificially destroying the combat balancing of Morrowind.

    I don't recommend Better Balanced Combat because it changes a lot of the mechanics and removes certain spells/effects as well "for balance".
    You don't need Better Balanced Combat if you pick the right weapon skills/attributes to compliment your chosen weapon choices for your build. As long as you actually pay attention to what you are doing and use the class/attribute/skill system the way it's designed, "missing" attacks rarely happens.
    The main complaint I have for the mod is that the "fortify skill" spells and consequently, due to how enchanting requires you know spells with certain effects to use them, "fortify skill" enchantments, are removed by Better Balanced Combat. Morrowind's best feature gets gimped by a mod that essentially only needed to change the way agility works.
    Morrowind was designed around freedom of choice - the point that once you become knowledgeable/powerful enough, you can become Godlike and it makes doing anything in the game easy but it takes a bit of time to get there unless you know exactly how to min/max your character into the perfect build with efficiency, which again, takes a lot of experience and knowledge about the game that you aren't going to have your first time through.

      I played morrowind when it first came out and thoroughly enjoyed it, recently went back to replay and realised just how spoilt we are in terms of combat. The imagination we had to put in not to mention the patience (walking speed and Morrowind's unique directions) is amazing.

      Screw off with this fragile ego bullshit. I played Morrowind on release, and came off with a feeling that the game didn't respect my time even back then. This mod undoes at least some of it.

    ? Why do people keep ignoring SIMPLE game mechanics?
    Just level the ability? Morrowind combat system is really enjoyable, because it simulates how poorly your combat skills are when you're still a NOOB..
    It could be better, yes, but it's nothing that complicated ffs..
    I find the lack of mana reg way more stressful when you're low level! But again, later, with alchemy, and some spell abuse "Cof, cof, Drain intelligence, cof" you won't miss mana reg..
    Just play the game as it is.. learn it.

    The dice-roll combat and spellcasting is perhaps the only bad thing about Morrowind's tabletop mechanics. It has a sense of progression, but it just doesn't work for a real-time game. The 100% hit chance alone massively improves an already excellent game and it doesn't break gameplay.

      On one hand, I'm super used to it so I don't even realize it when im playing anymore. On the other hand, I install this mod or play a modern RPG and am like WHOA - this feels so smooth!
      It's a hard balance to strike since the game wasnt built for this flow, but this is the best mod I have found so far that can bridge the gap between base and modern and still feel like "Morrowind".
      That being said, I'll still play base 99% of the time because the OG combat system allows for so much customization, I rarely mod gameplay, but do think this iis a great alternate experience many people would prefer.

      the same can be said about literally any balance / gameplay mod. the point is to customize your own gameplay experience. as much as I love morrowind, it's an old and clunky game and if people want to modernize it by installing a mod that affects you in no way, let them. not everyone has to have fun your way, that's the great thing about mods.

      @@Axelarden Okay, by your logic, when I play Chess I get to move around the pieces the way I want. So then at that point why play chess. This mod objectively makes it NOT Morrowind. 2) The chess analogy makes sense in the context of you can't not play by the rules of chess and call it chess. This changes morrowind significantly, the leveling changes, the difficulty changes, and the way you go about fighting changes entirely.
      3) Although YES you are free to mod the game and I wont stop anyone from doing so. This kind of mod makes the game NOT Morrowind, new players will not understand why the game is so easy or why leveling doesn't work with this mod.
