I loved Katee Sackhoff's Starbuck. She took it to a whole new level. As someone who loved the original series, her Starbuck was phenomenal. She went above and beyond and made the character her own. Bravo.
Same here I grew up in the time of the original, loved the original.. didn't watch the new one until years after it came out.. I honestly didn't think I was going like it.. I don't think I have ever been so wrong about anything.. I Loved the new BSG.. and I LOVED Starbuck.. she totally laid all my fears to rest and she was so dam cute and bad ass.
@kobeno1: that's interesting to hear. I know ur comment is 2 years old..... I never saw the original but the remake was probably IMO the greatest series of all time. It was a sci-fi but it also had great characters, storyline n drama. I'm a sci-fi fan, but there isn't too many decent sci-fi series IMO. Katie was great as Starbuck especially bc she made it her own - as I am led to believe - but I still think James Callis as Gauis Balter was better. His character was such a kniving, pathetic, wimpy, weasel at times. Almost every scene he did was brilliant.
To be honest, I wasn't skeptical. I'd grown up on the original series, it debuted not too long before my baby sister was born. When reruns were on we'd watch them as often as possible. The big thing was really watching Starbuck, Apollo, Boomer, and Muffit because, well, they were starfighter pilots, which I thought was cool, and a robot dog (also cool). Adama was a lesser extent for me, I really wanted to see the pilots and the robot dog. When they announced the miniseries I was interested to see what it was going to be like. It didn't bug me that they'd changed some character's genders (not to mention race as well in the case of Boomer), I wanted to see if it could feel like what I'd enjoyed as a kid and a teenager. The re-imagined series is, for me, a rare instance of being as good as the original. Not better than, but as good as. And I have the complete series for both the original and the re-imagined.
No disrespect for the actor, but this is why I never could get into the reimagining. Starbuck was really the star of the original, and they should have stayed as close to the original with that character as possible. It's like if they reimagined Star Wars, but this time Han Solo wasn't a swashbuckling ladies man, but an alcoholic lesbian with PTSD.
The reimagined BSG. In my humble opinion, as a whole, Miniseries + show - for me, personally, the best piece of television ever made. Call me an ignorant, but this is how I feel.
Loving something and enjoying something, is different to making an objective statement regarding quality. The final 3 episodes invalidate most of what made Battlestar the best show ever made. You still have those great episodes and morality plays. bit the nonsensical contradictory content of the final episode invalidated the shows intelligence. Just about every plot point doesn't make sense thanks to the final episode. It was a great ride. But whether or not you enjoy the show is not the same as its quality. One random example: Hera displayed clear overt Cylon projection powers. So? By the final episode that is irrelevant - we don't display that ability, it's meaningless and so THE ENTIRE ABILITY OF CYLONS TO PROJECT IS MEANINGLESS. What was the point? That is one of hundreds of threads the final eps could have dealt with. It's a great episode but it also makes the entire series poor.
Markus Galt I for one applaud Battlestar for having the balls of actually implementing some sort of mysticism, higher power/God and prophecies as a viable, functioning forces that drive people fates and sticking with them to the very end. I like the idea that God of some sorts is very present in that universe. It just makes the whole thing more special. As for Hera and the question of projection - I have my own explanation for that. For me it is safe to say that this trait got "diluted" during the 15000 years between Colonial survivors arriving to Earth and current times, and as such it is now reduced to not much more than vivid imagination, imagination that is perhaps more profound that imagination of average human from the "12 Colonies era". And for some people this trait manifests itself more visibly, in form of the eidetic memory. But overally I agree - this explanation may be viewed as far-fetched, and whole aspect of Hera being able to project is a weak point. Like I said - I wrote what I feel, and one rather cannot force himself or herself to feel different, don't you think?
You've put it very accurately. She seemed to enjoy seeing the model and playing with it from all three perspectives, and it helped her to reminisce a little about hoe they shot the viper battle scenes.
I luv it when women are into model ships from sci fi and stuff, its like become a stereo type that its only guys who into starship models but girls can be too.

Mr. Olmos, Miss Sackoff, the two of you helped re-define SciFi with the reimagined BSG series in a way no one else has ever done. Real Characters, Realistic situations, Moral dillemas & crises that mirrored our Country's state at the time, Polytheism vs. monotheism, etc. Absolutely stunning and mesmerizing in every way. I felt the same when I heard they made the character a woman. Man was I so wrong! She ended up being one of, if not the best sci-fi characters of all time!
Yes, but they haven't learned their lesson about letting Adama touch a model. Look into the behind the scenes regarding the sailing vessel Aurora. The smashing the ship to bits in a fit of anger and loss at Kara's death, was improvised. What Edward James Olmos did not know was that the ship was not a set prop, but a priceless model on loan from a museum. Ooops.
Katie Sackhoff is one of my all time favourite action stars. I've seen her in a number of roles and always admire her ability to live in the moment - making it so extremely real. I am so glad I bought the entire BSG series including the mini-series. I love all you guys!
Katee Sackoff is so down to earth and awesome. I've loved her in BSG, Longmire, Star Wars, pretty much anything she's in I've loved. It's great to hear these stories from her.
2022 and again watching this because I remembered for some reason how Katee struggled with "We've got violent decompression irradiating from port flight pod" What wonderful works of art these models are. As a fan I would love to have one of these things. Well done.
All the money that went into production and nobody could buy a $500 portable AC unit for the cockpit and placed some vents on the bottom? It would almost always be out of frame. That model of the Viper is absolutely awesome! I wish I had one. Very cool. Also her version of Starbuck is my favorite character. I was left feeling a bit sad for how her path came to an end. I felt she deserved more. I suppose perhaps that is what they wanted the audience to feel.
I'm a fan of the original BSG and Dirk Benedict...But absolutely Loved Katee Sackhoff in the remake.... She's also in quite a lot of Sci-Fi movies too.."The last Sentinel" is a darn good one..
My first Viper was made of snow, Yep Snow. I am old enough for the original shows when I was a kid. and we had the Blizzard of 1978. so I dug out a launch pad and in doing so made a viper out of the snow. I didn't have anything for the canopy but I had a cheap helmet I used cardboard to make look like the original helmets. and spent over a month playing in it every day until the snow actually started to melt.
Overheating in a pressure suit was an actual problem for astronauts. The solution was to develop a garment that was worn like long underwear and had a network of tubes that circulated coolant. You can buy shirts with the same technology today if you're working in a hot environment and need to wear protective clothing
Personally Dirk Benedict still made Starbuck....Katee is OK but she made a different Starbuck that was totally different than Dirk's version. I would never compare the two as they are not the same and comparing them is apple to onion.
She fully owned this character and made Starbuck a Legend in her own right, full stop. Hard to believe there was some backlash initially when the casting was announced.
@@tonebonetones i do agree that to make the character a woman was agenda manipulation at its best but to not recognize the effort she put into it is just as negative in my opinion. The new Batwoman series for example is when this agenda is rammed down your throat so to speak ( not to mention some of the worst acting ever seen just from a trailer). In short brother give credit where credit is due. Peace.
Just watched some Galactica episodes on DVD this evening - still one of my favourite sci-fi shows. I believe Katee Sackhoff was the "right girl" to be Starbuck - a great character played by a great actrice.
I passed out on horseback due to heat prostration. Literary fell off the horse. We were filming a military riding scene in field over and over and over in the PM heat. There were no water breaks but fortunately some of the others riders came to my aid and had canteens full of water. I feel for Sackoff.
Mr. Olmos, I LOVED you in Battlestar, and Katee. I especially loved all the intimate scenes of Adama and Rosalyn, especially the book reading and the joint smoking when no one was looking. I think I related more to that romance than any other romance I've ever seen on TV or in a movie. Your characters were so real, and you played them so well. I MISS BATTLESTAR SO MUCH! I wish it had gone on longer. THANK YOU GUYS FOR ALL THE MEMORIES AND ALL THE GREAT WORK! You'll always be a major inspiration.
Battlestar lasted longer than its original series, and had 20 eps per season post season 1. Plus we have caprica and the blood and chrome web series. And the new series is supposed to be connected the 03 series
My Mom called her '68 Chevelle SS ' Gertrude'. Katee for all your discomfort you made one incredibly believeable and lovable character. My favorite character in my favorite scifi show of my life. I hope you continue to land awesome parts in awesome shows. And hope I can stream those shows in the future. Thank you for inspiration to fight back during some of my worst times.
I was an original BSG fan, so Starbucks being a girl was a huge disappointment until I actually watched the show and completely fell in love with it, and her. I had the good fortune of messaging with katee once on facebook. We exchanged a few quips about Starbuck and my crush on her Starbuck character and had a couple of laughs. Katee is a wonderful, human being very genuine and along with Edward James the reason why BSG was such a huge success.
I revisited BSG on Peacock and now have more appreciation for the show. It was great in it's time and I was happy to see it go out on a high note and run its course. So say we all.
That awkward moment when you were originally upset that they were rebooting a character you loved as a child as a woman, and then that woman becomes your favourite character in BSG... Katee, Jamie and Ed were perfect for those iconic roles, but hats off to the whole squad for taking a much loved, if cheesy, late 70's show and turning it into such an awesome series.
I love seeing they are just people, suffering for their art and enthused to see toys that replicate their experiences, but just regulars. Hearing about her sitting in the cockpit for hours for seconds of film was cool too. I don't know how much suffering goes into each episode, but it has to be twenty to a hundred times what most people would think is enough. This just popped up on my feed, and I got to say Katee was excellent in BSG, and I am eager to see her in Mando or her Mando accepted spin off. I bet there are even more stories about the behind the scenes!
This clip is therapeutic in its wholesomeness. I will always remember Katee as a human and professional treasure even if Hollywood prefers spam bolognese like Brie Larson and her ilk.
I like Prince Xizor's Virago best as a standalone Starfighter. But the Babylon 5 Aurora Starfury is also really cool. Vipers are really nice too though for sure.
I've always felt that way too. I loved Star Wars as a kid but the X-Wing couldn't hold a candle to the Viper. The Viper is like a sleek work of art. The original Cylon Raider ships are pretty badass too.
In the original series, when most of the men were unable to fly and they started training women, Apollo said, "The Viper is the most advanced flying machine ever built by man...." It was awesome but I think the 2003 Viper out all other movie space craft to shame.
I’m so excited and impressed to hear her talk about that model kit with details and not as a toy. After watching this I sure would love to build mine very soon with lights and sounds.
It's sad to hear the straight up abuse they go through. Seriously, they couldn't rig a ventilation system for those people? She hates even thinking about it. I feel bad for her.
This is true beauty. Notice that she is either not wearing any makeup, or if she is wearing makeup, it is very little makeup. This is just her natural face and she looks so gorgeous.
Love the direction Edward James Olmos gives Katee Sackhoff at the end of this video. Great actor, director, producer, who mentored a lot of these young actors really gives back to the acting community, fun video love the behind the scenes.
I loved this version of Battlestar Galactica - and the performances of Katee Sackoff & Edward James Olmos were the main reasons I did. The show was legendary ,and ummissable!
Calo Q. - wasn’t sure when I heard of the swapped gender... but Katee made the role her own, she was well written as a complicated screwup and by the end we were sorry to see her go. And so say we all.
Noise and "just one more thing to go wrong" are the practical reasons. Then there's politics where if one person gets AC then everybody has to have AC for everything. Then there's just the pressure to keep production costs down. An AC unit isn't just a box that blows cold air for $300, it's also the guy that hauls it around, the two guys responsible for it working at all times, ect ect. If Tom Cruise has to sweat his ass off in full kit, inside a plywood box painted like a spaceship then what hope does poor little Katee have?
I'm so touched by this video. Aww you guys. Thank you so much for everything. Battlestar has become a family favorite, the richness of each character apart of our journey through life now and always. So grateful, and this was an amazing treat for all. Blessings be upon the brave crew of the Battlestar Galactica!
Wow! Katee Sackhoff isn't nearly as intimidating as Starbuck! Starbuck would beat me up, but all Katee Sackhoff would do is accidentally break my toys.
Some time ago we had our house painted in an LA summer. Every half hour the foreman yelled "Hydrate!" He had been a squad leader in Iraq. Minor sprains and strains are expected. But what Katee describes is life-threatening hyperthermia. Hot sound stage. hot space suit, in a hot Viper. Don't drink water or have to pee. In the end Katee couldn't say lines. Experienced actor can't say lines? Director was angry but not worried that she was on verge of permanent brain or other injuries. Wouldn't it be great if actors were as well cared-for as house painters? Long hours, unwanted sex scenes, okay. But needless danger to health? Not okay. SAG, wake up and take care of your members. Tremendous work and detail. Thank you for sharing this video! So Say We All!
Hmmmm The way she is talking, the flight suit bordered on being “real.” (This is possibly why the show was so good: much of the tech looked like it could be genuine.) Would it have been a problem to have cold air blown into the suit?
This is the 3 wing tri version that replaced the 1st design mockup in 1978. That original design is a flat wing with two lower fins what was used instead on Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century.

Also her version of Starbuck is my favorite character. I was left feeling a bit sad for how her path came to an end. I felt she deserved more. I suppose perhaps that is what they wanted the audience to feel.
I think (and she said something like that) that "discomfort" was part of their role and they were much more authentic.
In an episode of Longmire, this was on the shelf in the background of her house.
Yes, please which episode?
Really?
Like to see that 👍
No way. Which ep?
Really? I watched that whole series. Didn't see that.
I completely missed that and loved that show
Oh my, how carefully and lovingly she picks the model viper up. This is incredible.
Katee is a living proof that you can make Changes to an established universe WITHOUT ruining it or attacking the fans
She was incredible and was absolutely the right call for the role, but fans were *livid* at the casting at the time
@@DaemonEX0 she truly was incredible, and the fans were really angry at first but I think that people just learned to accept her
Crazy...... Edward J Olmos from Stand and Deliver, moves into Sci-Fi....it was truly excellent casting, for an excellent series.
I love her so much. Even while not in character, Starbuck shines through her.
Overheating in a pressure suit was an actual problem for astronauts. The solution was to develop a garment that was worn like long underwear and had a network of tubes that circulated coolant. You can buy shirts with the same technology today if you're working in a hot environment and need to wear protective clothing
Always loved how Dirk Benedict made that character unforgettable until i watched Katee make it her own!
@Maxim Ghost another badass !
Peace.
@@shawnclyne1904 Fair dues, my man. As I say she did a good job, nothing against her per se, just the politics.
Thx UA-cam for recommending this 8 years late >_
Eduardo B. R., more than 9 years later for me. Today is June 4, 2020. I’m glad to have seen it.
Very honest evaluation of her situation! I LOVE hearing her tell her story!
Ok. I'm re-watching all of it ... right frakking now.
Wow... they even got the Dradis working... That's bad ass...
Katee rocked as Starbuck! BSG was one of the best mini series l've ever enjoyed. Thanks to all who brought this show into our lives 😎.
Rewatching BSG now. Katie is amazing in that show.
I revisited BSG on Peacock and now have more appreciation for the show. It was great in it's time and I was happy to see it go out on a high note and run its course.
So say we all.
She was great on Longmire.
Katie seems like such a sweet, normal person. Not full of herself like many actors.
I just love the people involved in this show. Olmos is my favorite. He reminds me of my dad.
We've got violent awesomness irradiating from the starboard Mr. Eddie Olmos...
10 years, 1 week and 1 day later I fall in love with Katee Sackoff. The way she nerds out on this model is adorable.
There are girls way prettier then her, but when she starts talking and smiling I am so falling in love with her.
Same here! (raises hand)
She's soulful
She's a good looking gal, no doubt about it, but when I saw Carl in the latrine with Boomer, that did it for me.
So say we all. Her eyes and smile are rather unique and desirable indeed. Not, she never wears make up. That's unheard of.
I was thinking the same. A nice smile is a girls best accoutrement
Love that you do these with no makeup just like a regular dull normal. Thank you. You are a real person.
The Colonial Viper is my favorite Sci Fi fighter craft. Sorry to all Star Wars and Star Trek fans.
B5 Star Fury
Defiant first
Virago next
Then Vipers
In the original series, when most of the men were unable to fly and they started training women, Apollo said, "The Viper is the most advanced flying machine ever built by man...." It was awesome but I think the 2003 Viper out all other movie space craft to shame.
I’m so excited and impressed to hear her talk about that model kit with details and not as a toy. After watching this I sure would love to build mine very soon with lights and sounds.
Angel in the show and an angel in RL. shes great.
katee is so wonderful. glad to see edward james olmos. he is a very wonderful and nice actor. got to meet him at alamo city comic con last year.
It's sad to hear the straight up abuse they go through. Seriously, they couldn't rig a ventilation system for those people? She hates even thinking about it. I feel bad for her.
+EAGLE that's why she gets paid the big bucks I guess
You're right, I'm sure..I'm just more kind than that. I would want my actors to be comfortable.
+EAGLE It would make noise, which is bad for sound, and it would be too much of a time hassle.
Ahh.. Makes sense..thanks.
I loved this!!! And, James Olmos jumping in. NICE!!!
Sorry Katee, for not hearing/understanding one word you said about that Viper.. Your just so cute ;-)
Werrrrrrrd!
This is cringe
The Viper Mark II was such a cool fighter. And the special effects of them flying in space were fantastic.
Maybe the fact she could not say her text was due to being hyperthermic
Katee is the nicest, honest and most sincere actor I have ever met or seen. And a really good egg! My absolute favorite!
Katee Sackoff......Wowzer!!! 💖😍👀
I loved this version of Battlestar Galactica - and the performances of Katee Sackoff & Edward James Olmos were the main reasons I did.
The show was legendary ,and ummissable!
I loved the devil might care atitude you portrayed just as good as Dirk benedikt. Starbuck. You were great.
Calo Q. - wasn’t sure when I heard of the swapped gender... but Katee made the role her own, she was well written as a complicated screwup and by the end we were sorry to see her go.
And so say we all.
@@mikereger1186 and so say we all
I ADORE Katee. Thank you all for bringing her in and making these pieces! They are AMAZING
Why the hell didn't they pipe in AC inside the vipers? Portable units are cheap and compact these days. _"Make it happen, Chief!"_
@@Dream0AsylumThat's what unions are for, god damnit [and agents] ! ☺ The squeaky wheel gets the grease...
Namolo Kaman the squeaky wheel is also the one that gets replaced once you grow tired of greasing it..
I love you, Katee! Thank you for playing all of your characters!
Well, if only Edward was as gentle with his pirate ship on BSG that he is with this model.
I'm so touched by this video. Aww you guys. Thank you so much for everything. Battlestar has become a family favorite, the richness of each character apart of our journey through life now and always. So grateful, and this was an amazing treat for all. Blessings be upon the brave crew of the Battlestar Galactica!
"We have violent decompression radiating from the port side pod"... quite the tongue twister.
Well done. Thanks for the nice interview Katee!
Wow! Katee Sackhoff isn't nearly as intimidating as Starbuck! Starbuck would beat me up, but all Katee Sackhoff would do is accidentally break my toys.
Guess what, she's an actor.
pyr0pete Thank you, Captain.
ILoooooveCamels You, Number One, are welcome!
Bunch of Beta-males in here. Typical modern media making females ass kicking males. But since most males today are nancy boys it must be true.
@@UkrainianPaulie so, desperate to tie badass to gender? That's pretty pathetic.
Watching this while currently on Season 2.
"I'm not sure what rank I was, I think I was a captain when I died..."
Oh, I should not have heard that.
but she came back alive
Gunzmith Dragonkind Sure, she did.
Well, yeah, if you want to avoid spoilers you should probably avoid watching interviews, or just about anything else to do with a show, when you are watching seasons that originally aired years ago.
...as i reply to a comment that originally posted years ago...
Joe Blow don't worry, I too often post on things years old.
@@joeblow9661 idk why but I felt sad reading the last part lol. Yet it gave me a little bit of happiness knowing this show has brought us all together even after so many years :)
I love you both!
Thank you so much for your labor of love on BSG! "Nothin but the rain, sir."
Olmos is always so amazing that every time he speaks i listen like hes my commanding officer
So say we all. Did you see him in "Stand And Deliver"?
I've loved the Viper design since I was a little kid. Once of my favorites designs of all time.

2020 for me :)
2020
As a kid growing up with the show I have to say I miss you guy's....
Thank you for letting this brother dream that there are no limits in the world apart from those we put on ourselves...
She strikes me as a real person. she's not "glammed up" or anything. She seems really approachable and down to earth. Cool, man. :-)
I'm liking the cameo by Edward James Olmos at the end. Frakkin' great!
She's describing what it's like to be an actual pilot. I got my flight training in Florida, so yeah, the cockpit is hot.
I hear ya' brother. I fly out of Deer Valley (KDVT) in Phoenix, Arizona. As uncomfortable as it can be flying in a hot cockpit I prefer it to the cold.
Peace.
Thank you, Ma'am, for all the hardships you endured to entertain us.
I loved and hated the show at the same time. It reminded me of the cold war nightmares. It really reminded me of growing up in the 60's.
Sorry this reply is about 8 years too late, but this is the first time this video has popped across my DRADIS. I love Katee Sackoff! The characters I've seen her play, from Kara "Starbuck Thrace, to her roles I've seen her in Riddick, 24, Bionic Woman, and Longmire...she's rocked every role! Great to see you too, Mr. Olmos! Same compliments to you, sir! Every role I've ever seen you in, you smoked it! Your take on Adama was monstrously great! (Was glad to see you briefly reprise your role as Gaff in Blade Runner 2049!)
I was also one who loved the classic Battlestar Galactica, and found a new love in the reimagined show! Both were great for different reasons.
Kudos to the modeler of that Viper! Tremendous work and detail.
Thank you for sharing this video! So Say We All!
Hmmmm
The way she is talking, the flight suit bordered on being “real.” (This is possibly why the show was so good: much of the tech looked like it could be genuine.)
Would it have been a problem to have cold air blown into the suit?
This is the 3 wing tri version that replaced the 1st design mockup in 1978.
That original design is a flat wing with two lower fins what was used instead on Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century.
What do you hear, starbuck?
Ain't nothing but the rain, sir
Well..grab your gun and bring the cat in.
Coolest dialogue ever.
Still don't know what it means but it does sound cool.
