    I am 77. We only have what is the present. My wife died ten years ago next month after a very long illness. She is always with me, just a little more faded each year. I choose to smile at her being away... I understand the hard parts and cherish the happy parts and wait for my own passing. It was good to get to touch the end of this series. It will always be the best fiction ever written and acted out. One more door door softly closed. Thank you for sharing. Adieu.

      Lots left to do.
      I am 44. I lost my third child to cancer almost 4 years ago at barely 12 years old. We respect the many years he missed out on and go out and do those things we wish he had a chance to do.
      77 isn't the end fora lot of people. I had 3 great-grandparents growing up. A couple lived past 100. Both my grandfather's lived into their 90s. One of my grandmother's is in her 90s and the other is in her 90s. Yesterday my older grandmother was dancing with our 2 yo twins. She loves to walk along the river with the dogs every day. She plays the piano. She has a place in our lives and helped me through the loss of my son. My grandmother's are a reservoir of wisdom and I absorb as much as I can from them. Just like my grandfather's when they were around and my great-grandparents when they babysat me as a child. They knew which relationships to salvage and which to cut my losses. They explained the sunk cost fallacy back in the 1980s and saved me sticking it out in a sport that I wasn't enjoying anymore but didn't want to disappoint my parents.
      Unlike most species on the planet, humans live past reproductive usefulness because we have more intrinsic value to younger generations than just manual labor and childbirth.
      Try not to throw in the towel prematurely.

    My late wife and I loved this series of BSG. We were together about 20 years. She got cancer in 2020 at the age of 39, died 5 months later in my arms. I've been going back and forth over Adama's decision to just go off on his own trying to make sense of it. On one hand, it sort of makes sense because if he stayed with any group, he would end up being the leader by default whether he wanted to or not and he was tired of leading - many people lost their lives under his leadership, and whether or not it was his fault, he carried that guilt.
    Regarding him going off to be alone - he wasn't trying to start some new life by himself. That would be absolutely foolish and borderline suicidal, going to live alone in an unknown land with potential enemies and possibly dangerous wildlife, with nothing to defend or feed himself, only the clothes on his back and his bare hands. He was going off alone to wait to die.
    But what made no sense to me was him being willing to wash his hands and walk away from his son, along with Kara - whom he viewed as a daughter - and Tigh, his best friend of 40 years.

    • @usul573
      @usul573 4 роки тому +33

      I've gone over it a thousand times, and the only kind of compromise I have is viewing it as a symbolic death. Kara vanishes. Roslin dies. Adama flies off to the rest of his life, to live on that hill alone in their cabin that is "Almost heavenly" besides her grave. Lee goes off to explore the planet. Everyone else left alive settles on earth and Lee could potentially see them again. They stood there, on earth together, they achieved their goal, but there is still death and sadness. Somehow it's ok though. That's the main message. Kara promised him that it would be ok and that Lee would love it. He had to let her go. Full circle

    • @BDaMonkey
      @BDaMonkey 4 роки тому +35

      He didn't have nothing though. He obviously has tools, because he talks about constructing the cabin in his final scene. And he has a Raptor. More importantly he has the experience and intelligence to survive. He's a decorated officer of the colonial fleet, and worked his way up from being a grunt.
      There's a sub theme in the show about children not reaching their full potential while their parents are around. I think him leaving might have to do with that. Lee was always in his shadow. But the finale is so vague that it is anyone's guess.
      The one thing that truly pissed me off about the finale was that there was no Tigh/Adama farewell scene. That was needed. Those guys went through hell together.
      We need to see the extended cut of the ending some day. It exists.

      Sometimes even Angels do not realize what they have become until a certain point. I think for Kara it was when she managed to translate an old song into a path for Galactica to find New Earth. It took a bit of time from there for her to accept that she would have to leave Lee.
      But that doesn't mean she couldn't come back when he was ready to move on. Just for now, as she said, it was the first day of the rest of his life. Better he lived it while she lived her new life discovering the universe.
      When you think about it, she gained what Cavil always wanted. To be able to perceive Everything. To see Gamma Rays and hear X-Rays. If he hadn't been so impatient and needy, he could have realized that himself and learned how in time. But then, of course, Tyrol ultimately took that away from him as well.

    I always did have one question, and this is more real speculation than anything. When Adama deboarded the Raptor, and he said "I don't have much time". Was he really referring to just Laura? We were led to believe that in his haste, he was wanting to give Laura a look at the world she had helped find before she died. But what if that truly wasn't the whole picture?
    When William embraced his son Lee, it's like Lee knew it wasn't just Laura that was approaching the end, it was also his father as well. Lee and Kara knew that William (Admiral Adama) after his heart attack years before, would eventually come up again as they no longer had access to advanced medicine. So this was even more heartbreaking than just Lee not seeing his father for awhile. He knew he would never see him alive again. This was truly the end. And what made it so much worse, was that Lee knew there would be no dad, no Kara ever again. They were ALL saying goodbye at that moment. God what a sad ending!

Moore said there’s a deeper figurative meaning but never explain it. Fans got the basic gist/feeling of it w/o any explanation.
      The first time it’s said is NOT the Viper battle scene from the pilot. It’s just Adama & Starbucks walking in a halfway before the Cylon attack.

Jamie Bamber deserved much better than he got after S2 and he still deserves better. I get where they were going, Lee’s finally his own man and he’s going to do what makes him happy but ultimately they left him alone. Adama basically abandons him forever and cements himself as a crappy father forever. Cool.

    • @dalethelander3781
      @dalethelander3781 4 роки тому +2

      @xellossaxon Part of that can be attributed to Syfy VP in charge of programming, Mark Stern, who took over after NBC/Universal kicked Bonnie Hammer upstairs. Stern directed Moore and Eick to write more stand-alone episodes in Season 3 and less episodes having to do with the "we gotta find Earth" overall story arc. (i.e. "The Woman King") Season 4 was Moore and Eick playing catch-up after Stern informed them that S4 would be the last.

    • @beta_cygni1950
      @beta_cygni1950 4 роки тому

      @xellossaxon I sort of agree with you. The plot was at times ridiculous. The characters were mostly horrible people (even the humans): Laura Rosslyn was a petty dictator and a terrible person, Adama was a tyrant, Kara was horrible. The love angst between Apollo and Starbuck was ridiculously overdone and not believable. About the only decent character was Helio.
      He actors themselves were good, though. And the final reveal ending was, I thought, very good (the end was NOT the Apollo Starbuck goodbye scene).
      The reveal that Hera was the mother of all modern humans, and that all modern humans are part cylon, was good. And that was "God's" entire plan. It orchestrated everything that happened in the series just for the specific purpose of getting Hera to that particular place, at that particular time. So she could be the progenitor of the humans of the "new Earth". Everyone and everything else (human & cylon alike) were only pawns to accomplish that goal.

      An almost all Canadian unknown cast (Olmos), a reasonable budget, good special effects but not great, I think the writing and acting pulled it off.
      My biggest complaint is there's no difference between our world and the long ago far away one of the Colonies. All the way down to their suits, and the name of their cigars(Cubans).

      Just finished the series and I'm empty I'm so disappointed at the finale. I always interpreted the different characters making families with others they didn't truly love, out of convenience or lust, a result of their cylon/human programming, which Saul personified the most of all imo, whether it be by a first or former creator civilisation, and Kara and Lee's final getting together would represent the glitch in the proverbial matrix from which they as an unconventional, emergent Adam and Eve would represent true, emergent free will in their physical unification of humans and cylons against the first creator's paradoxical, artifical idea of cyclical, deterministic 'free will', which was to be repeated ad infinitum, as per the first humanoid civilisation's will. All could be a gigantic metaphor for people's struggle against their biological human programming, orthodoxy, and what makes them truly fulfilled.

    I loved the original Battlestar Galactica, this updated version took me a while to warm up to. But even from the beginning I realized that this was a darker and gritty re-telling of the story and frankly, more realistic in many ways. Its production standards were higher, much higher,.... and we got to see the journey all the way through.
    The original was fun,... but the re-do was better. Both through are wonderful story telling.

But to answer the question, I think Kara was an angel, and here's why: at about :20 into the clip, right after Lee leaves the command ten, Kara follows, and looks almost pleadingly up at the sky, as if to say, "Please, God, just give me a few more minutes, OK?"
      So yes, I think she was what Leoben said she was: an Angel of God with a desire to lead her people home.

    • @dreamer2260
      @dreamer2260 4 роки тому +4

      @Vern Ripley they could have been good for each other of Kara had found a way to heal and get past her self destructiveness and Lee had worked through his self-esteem and insecurity issues. They should have been written in such a way that they helped each other with that because that’s the kind of thing that brings lovers together in real life. Anders was just an unfortunate distraction; he didn’t challenge Kara as a person, didn’t help her grow. Lee and Kara’s relationship and love was deeper and it was a tragedy (and imo a writing mistake) how it turned out.

    A perfect ending-in the end, everyone goes away. No one gets out of life alive. All you can hope for is to leave some part of yourself with someone who will cherish it, until it’s their time to go. Parents have to let go of their children, and in this last goodbye, Adama finally do that with his son- and children have to let go as well, as Lee did here. As for Kara, she finally was at peace- the long and strange trip that was her life finally at an end, with all questions answered and all obligations fulfilled. She got to say farewell to her true soul mate and then just slipped away. There are far worse epitaphs. Bear’s music makes you feel every word, every gesture with your own heartstrings. A great ending to a magnificent and under appreciated ( by the lack of Emmys) show.

      About to die? Jeez, Adama's not THAT old. The character can't have been older than mid-60s at this point, especially since they went to a lot of trouble to make Edward James Olmos look younger in the miniseries and first season. Wouldn't he have like, 15-20 good years left (at a minimum)? I mean, I don't know what life expectancy is like in BSG, but medical science seems about on par with today's technology.

    I know this finale is a bit polarizing and I'll admit there are some flaws with it, but I always liked this scene, both from how the characters get to say goodbye to it also going back to Ronald Moore's past work on Star Trek. For as much as Battlestar tried to go in the opposite direction as Trek, from being a grim and gritty military war story compared to a new age space utopia (Minus STD and STP), in the end it has Lee embracing it's most basic and optimistic ideals in wanting to explore and seek out new things.
