How To Grow Lychee Plant from Seed - Germinate Lychee Seed Successfully Every Time!

- Today I’ll be showing you how to grow lychee plants from seed, its super easy and a lot of fun. There are a few tricks to growing lychees that make cultivating them more successful and I share some of these in this video.
Lychee is the name of a fruiting tree native to parts of more tropical China (the latin name is Litchi chinensis) and apparently, they have been cultivated since way back in the 11th century. Lychee fruit is very popular in South-east Asia and in more recent years has become more readily available in western countries as well. Germinating lychees from seed is generally very reliable, but you need to be patient as they can take a few years before you start harvesting fruit from them. Growing lychees in pots is an effective way to start cultivating them and this can be particularly practical for those who have a garden with limited space or even just a balcony to grow a few plants on.

It is so useful to know how to germinate the seeds. My problem is I am not sure how to balance watering
until they get established they'll appreciate a daily watering, well drained soil.

Hi there, just a question regarding the paper towel and foil, do you regularly moisten the paper towel or do you just do that once when you place the seeds in side it?
i did with some and some didn't need it. Just check on it from time to time and if you see it getting a little dry just re-dampen it.

No he is correct, Western people pronounce it wrong using their phonetics. Lychee the LY sound is like a hard "i", but also a slight down tone. It's a Chinese fruit and that how we say it. 100% it's not LEE.
Mine started to mildew and rot?? Anyone have advice? How do you keep them damp without mildew
normally they sprout with in the week and i dont get any mildew. a bit of cinnamon, or just plant direct.

What happens if they are kept longer in the moist towel and foliage? Will it start rotting? if so, about how long after?
The thing is that I live in Sweden, and it's quite snowy during winter season from january to mars, and rarely any sun when it's snowy. But in some weeks it does get sunny at noon for a while, and the snow is melted for a few days. It's still a cold weather, but not so bad. Will it be fine if I grow my seeds at the beginning of febuary?

hey Linnea, you would have to keep it warm in winter, Lychee will not survive snow or frost, you'll need to find a way to shelter it, maybe in a heated greenhouse or bright spot in the house. It should be ok in the moist towel and you should see some growth with in 2 weeks at most. If nothing is growing after 3 weeks then maybe the seed is bad, keep them warm also.
@@GreenthumbsGarden ok, we will see how it goes. Right now I put the seeds to root in a drawer like you did, but in the back of my room. And in two weeks I’ll give an update. If there is no greenhouse, could I maybe try a terrarium if I have a sunlight lamp for plants..?😅 Cause after all, I was planning to plant it in a pot and not in the garden👍🏻
Hi Linnea, sorry for the late response. For some reason UA-cam is flagging many comments and putting them in the spam section and I only just seen this 🙄 I think it probably will out grow the terrarium pretty fast, maybe just find a nice bright spot in the house, and on warm sunny days when the temps are not too low you could leave it outside.

keep an eye on them and if you see if getting a little dry give it a squirt of water

Lychee wont grow true to seed, so its a gamble what you'll get, it could be poor fruit or it could be good. To guarantee good fruit that's why people graft. If you can find a tree that produces well then you can try grafting on your seed-grown rootstock. We will do grafting in future videos which will be fun... the hard part will be finding a good tree to take a graft from. Not much Lychee grown here 🙄

yes sure!
How come you didn't put cinnamon on those seeds?
they germinate fairly quickly so I didn't bother. However I think cinnamon would have been worth using.

not likely, it wont be in the towel that long, they germinate fairly fast within the week sometimes a little longer

water your lychee freely, they like a lot of water. don't let them get dry. I learnt this the hard way.

Can you actually grow these in the U.K. ?
would need to be placed in a heated greenhouse or inside for winter as they are a tropical tree and can not stand any frost
u can easily grow them, will it flower and fruits is another story. They want extreme cold (night) and hot (day) weather.

Sorry, several usually means 3-5 hours. It don't need to be exact, a few hours more won't hurt, just make sure the seed is well plump and hydrated 🙂
Noticed that your tissue was moist when you removed the seeds after 23 days.. surely the tissue is going to dry up, even if it’s in the foil. So do you have to keep the tissue moist for the 2 weeks?
yes keep the tissue moist, it it dries just add a bit more water and re-dampen it.
