Okay! I'm doing this today. Looked at a lot of videos but I like yours best. Someone left a peach pit in front of my door and instead of taking it as an insult I'm going to take it and make a tree.😏🌳
Fantastic! I hope it grows well for you and that you send a picture when it’s in the pot! Here’s part two of this series! ua-cam.com/video/VfAqMcFpisA/v-deo.html
Thank you for getting right to it and making everything slow enough to follow along and crystal clear on what's to be done. I wish everyone made videos like this! Cheers! I'm going to germinate some peach seeds right now! : )
Thank you so much for showing us how to do this! Last summer I got two cases of amazing peaches from a farm here in the DFW area and canned most of them. I had so many pits left over that I had to save some of them to see if I can figure out how to grow a few of them into trees. Now I know what to do and will start the process today!
I can confirm that this works for apricots as well. It seems the cold stratification is only necessary if you don't remove the hull and skin of the seed. My apricot seedling germinated within a week and has now been transplanted.
May be the stratification has allready been done in transit. Also it's a little sketchy that a mediterreinian plant that grows naturally in north africa would need an extended period of stratification at all.
This is such a great way to germinate peach seeds. In ten days I had a seedling that is two inches tall and ready to sprout leaves. Thank You! I’ll keep you posted. It’s an ice Princess white peach!
Fantastic! I’m glad it helped and l look forward to reading about your peach seedling progress! Here’s part 2 and 3 of this video series on my new channel! ua-cam.com/video/VfAqMcFpisA/v-deo.html
This method works… and very well, might I add. I have three different strains of peaches that have germinated. The Ice Princess Peaches are doing very well. To those who are trying this…. Remember, this is a tree and once these take… there’s a root system. Keep the base of the pots well drained to prevent root rot.
Thank you for this video! My grandmother had peach trees and I been wanting to grow them. I know my grandmother didn't do that whole 3 months in the fridge thing. This is what I was looking for
Lol my grandma too. When I was asking her for advice she was like “do you think when Johnny Appleseed brought apple trees to the US that he did the fridge step?” -> wisdom.
@@TheTexasGardener Hey .. yes I am. I’m attempting peach and apricot .. I’ve got some tomatoes going from seeds out of store bought tomatoes. I was inspired by my son, who has raised some muscadine grape for 2 years (we just put them in the ground), and he’s got some pomegranates going now.
@@SteveShoemake Hey - the peach didn’t make it but the apricot is thriving - about 4 foot tall now. Unfortunately, I discovered apricots don’t thrive in my location (south GA), so .. I may try planting it next to my tall fence anyway
Ooh man thank you so much! My daughter loves nectarines and this trick worked! She just planted our first attempt (14 exact days) and is thriving in soil 🤙🏼! Thanks for the trick!!
@@TheTexasGardener aye yes! Haha thank you for checking in. I actually picked up a heat mat and light for the winter, so far so great she is growing like a fast and healthy and my daughter has been doing well with care.
Tried it and it pretty much works with any stone fruit seed. Tried it so far both on apricots, peaches/nectarines, plums both greengage, prune plums ie Prunus Domestica and japanese plums ie Prunus Salicina and it all seems to work well! I would say I have near 100% germination rate with this trick! Works well even with old dried out seeds like raw shelled sweet apricot kernels that you can buy for eating in the same way as almonds lol. Weird how we are told to cold stratify and wait months and even years for the pits to sprout by themselves when you seemingly can do just this and save time and possibly guarantee that more seeds end up sprouting. Have you tried using this trick on other fruit seeds like apples and pears? I guess these are much harder to do with due to their small size but it wouldn't surprise me if this tricks works on many more Rose family(Rosaceae) plants. I am going to keep trying this trick with more plums and cherry plums which I assume all will work well and then also pear and apple seeds just to see if it works with them too.
Works with apple seeds and lemon seeds. I do this same process with avocado seeds but it takes a little longer for avocado seeds. They start sprouting 2-4 weeks. Thanks for watching!
I haven't had the same success with the dried-out seeds. Something else for those watching today - start several seeds at the same time if you can. Then you can select and use the strongest of the group to transplant. Thanks for watching!
Can now say this absolutely works. Im right on track with the updates shown here (my ten days looks like his, etc). But I did soak the seeds for three days because I forgot about them. That said, the skin fell off in two pieces. Unfortunately, that was because the seed split in two. I matched them back up, put them in the paper towels anyway, and today I have a one inch peach tree after about 15 days from nutcracking. 😄
Great video. I would have planted at 10 days. But the idea of skipping cold stratification is a good way to skip a year. If you sprout them in summer by spring you can graft the seedlings onto a mature tree and probably get fruit from it the following year. If you are hybridizing that is quick results for a fruit tree. Thanks
@@ThànhTrần-333 You can do it either way depending on what your goal is. It you have a good variety you want to propagate you can take scions from it and graft them onto rootstock, that can be seedlings, mature trees or just a pice of root. If you are developing a new variety, usually by hybridization, then you can use the method I described above. Some trees can take several years to mature but if you graft a seedling on a mature tree you will likely reduce the time to maturity and know if it's a keeper or not.
Haha! Thanks! Here's part 2 follow up for this peach tree! ua-cam.com/video/VfAqMcFpisA/v-deo.html The first two pits opened more easily that I was expecting. The 3rd one the seed flew out on the table!
@@TheTexasGardener What I used is a garlic compresser, so no projectiles fly out. If you position the seed to where the seam is sticking out and press, it should create a crack along the seams, which allows you to open it up and pull out an untouched seed. It worked for me at least.
Put it in a cloth and hold it on its edge over a hard surface. Then hit the edge with a hammer or another hard object. Hit it gently until it cracks. It'll make a pop sound. Turn it over and hit the opposite side a couple of times until you hear a similar pop. Gently pry the hull halves apart and you've got the seed.
I found one that already had a root and shoot, in my compost making bin. I am nurturing it in my greenhouse. It has grown quite big. I will need to pot it on into a bigger pot very soon. I love a volunteer! 😂❤👍👍👍
Thanks so much for this video! Been saving my pits from two different kind of peaches, a plouot, and a nectarine. Just broke my pits and put my seeds to soak. Praying they all start here in north Louisiana!

I used your method after watching this video. It worked. I'm in South Africa, Cape Town. It's the end of summer down here and I did it on nectarines. Thank you so much for the great video.
@@SteveShoemake they are doing fine. Only two survived and they are thriving. I should up pot them now. I did it again for my mom. And we planted them in the ground and we had about 8 in the ground. She lives in another state or province so I can't really give feedback on their growth but it does work indeed.
I was so impressed when I saw this one and successfully germinated a couple of seeds. But after two years of taking care and doing everything to protect the seedlings, this winter, I lost the only surviving seedling. Besides this, I sowed 7/8 seeds outside and left them to stay in the ground. I am very happy to see the new 5 seedlings popped and growing strong and healthy. I tried for apple and observed that growing and germinating seedlings naturally is better and more reliable. I got almost 150 apple seedlings and am still growing naturally and satisfied with the progress of the help of nature!

It may be because they've been in cold storage from the farm to the fridge so chill hour requirements may have been satisfied. I planted a couple of apricots seeds a few days ago and I'm waiting for them to germinate now.
Trying this. BIL brought me some peaches and they're so ripe a few of the pits split open just cutting them in half, best peaches I've tasted in a long time. Found this in search and I'm soaking them right now.

@@SteveShoemake No, but thanks for reminding me. I live in S.W. Georgia and have 3 adult peach trees and several juvenile peach trees around the property. I got some really nice peaches this past Spring and enjoyed eating them on a daily basis. I would then throw the pits in various places I thought a tree might like to grow. Nice 1. 1st I've seen on actual sprouting. I've been buying peaches, plums & apricots etc for months now (in coastal NSW Australia) & saving seeds. I always wanted to grow Apricots / pips, from seed for medicinal purposes & I love eating all stone fruits. It's almost winter here now though. Doesn't freeze. Hoping to get some going before spring. Thanks!

Thanks for this, one question. After watching this I got a couple nectarine pits but did not crack open for a week or so. The seeds came out dry and pretty flat are they worth planting or do I need to extract that seed right after eating the fruit. Thanks again!
Ya can’t leave them too long in my experience they tend to dry out too much and go flat and don’t sprout. I also had heaps to mushy and yuck too cos I kept them too long in a moist container with the she’ll still on them. I was trying to germinate them with the shell on and see what happened but they all died.
Last year I did it to a lemon seed. A few of them sprouted and one survived for this year as I live in a cold climate. This year I did again and I got 2 more little lemon trees. My last year’s lemon tree is about 15 inches tall . I can’t load a pic here. It works folks. It works for everything. I did to a mango seed, it worked well, but didn’t survive the cold winter here. If you live down south, you have lots of options and variety of tree seeds to germinate yourself, fast and easy. Nothing is like to see success result , it’s so satisfying.

This is the method I have found works best too. My trees are 2 years old now. I have in 5 gal buckets with drain holes and bring in during winter. I live in Western NY. So far so good trees are about 3 feet out of bucket. Truck is still about thickness of pencil.
I have mine in 5 gal containers with holes drilled . They are above 4.5 feet tall. I need to prune but I'm not sure how to do it. I live in zone 5, gonna wait til spring to plant. I just can't decide where to plant my babies

I bought a flat of “canning” peaches about a month ago and saved the seeds. Cracked the shells and put the seeds not touching each other, on damp paper towels sprinkled with cinnamon in a sealed container in my fridge. Today, I found six had roots so planted those. The others I peeled off the seed coats, rinsed in cinnamon and put back into the fridge as before. In a day or so, I’ll pull them out and try sprouting them in soil inside a tray. just a little info about sprouting i sprout pecan nuts the same way do it in jan i use about a dozen pecans lay on its side about 1 inch deep in good potting soil damppen place in indirect sun light dont let it freeze in about 6-8 weeks you should see tiny pink shoot growing then two leaves as weather warms let them have about 1 hr sun shine the bring back in as they grow add a little more sun time ive had about 80% success do ing this use a deep bucket for these so the tap root will have room to grow i made the mistake one time the tap root grew in coil like a spring ( too small bucket) use 5 gal bucket with drain holes if you can if grows leaves it has a tap root it comes out first but you dont see it let it grow to 12in tall before moving to its own bucket P S dont do anything to the pecans except put in soil
I did this! I soaked and peeled 5 pits/seeds 2 weeks ago! Today, 3 of those had teeny tiny roots started. The other 2 looked like they had mildewed. So I potted the 3 into 3 small pots. 🤞 we get growth! Is there any way to post pics of the past 2 weeks progression on here?
Fantastic! You should get growth! I’m not sure about the picture posting in here. Did you see part 2 and part 3 of the peach tree series follow up to this one? Thanks for watching!
@SteveShoemake I started them in potting soil in 6" pots the first year then gallon pots the second year and into the ground the 3rd year. 4th year they are about 3' tall and doing well. Just don't overwater them or let them get too dry . A light fertilizer or top dress slow release fertilizer helps. I kept them in my greenhouse the first couple of Winters until I got them into the ground. I trim the lower branches off and put trunk guards on them to protect them from rabbits. I'm thinking in a couple of more years I'll have peaches on them around year 5 hopefully. I've read it takes 2-4 years to get peaches, probably faster if they are put into the ground sooner than later.

Thing I have found with growing peach trees from pits or seed is the fruit from the new tree will not have a cling free pit which makes canning them a pain in the butt.
A tree grown from a pit is like a child from two parents. It will not be a clone of either one but a mixture of the two, could be better tasting or worse, just different than both. You will need to grow a new tree from any seed and the graft from the existing tree you want to clone. That is the only way to continue that exact fruit you want.
I haven’t tried plum seeds yet but I imagine it will. I have used this with Peaches and nectarines and also used it with lemon, apple and avocado seeds making them germinate faster. Give it a try and let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching!

@SteveShoemake no not yet Steve. I've been traveling a lot over the past 2 years. But when that stops I plan to plant an orchard!
Thank you so much for showing us how to do this! Last summer I got two cases of amazing peaches from a farm here in the DFW area and canned most of them. I had so many pits left over that I had to save some of them to see if I can figure out how to grow a few of them into trees. Now I know what to do and will start the process today!
Fantastic! I hope you get a lot of peach trees! Please let me know how they are doing and thanks for watching!
any update? they didn't germinate did they?
I can confirm that this works for apricots as well. It seems the cold stratification is only necessary if you don't remove the hull and skin of the seed. My apricot seedling germinated within a week and has now been transplanted.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing
Wait do you have to damp it with water once a week or just leave it there like that for 14 days 🤔
May be the stratification has allready been done in transit. Also it's a little sketchy that a mediterreinian plant that grows naturally in north africa would need an extended period of stratification at all.
Going to try plums too
This is such a great way to germinate peach seeds. In ten days I had a seedling that is two inches tall and ready to sprout leaves.
Thank You!
I’ll keep you posted.

This method works… and very well, might I add.
I have three different strains of peaches that have germinated.
The Ice Princess Peaches are doing very well. To those who are trying this…. Remember, this is a tree and once these take… there’s a root system. Keep the base of the pots well drained to prevent root rot.

Fantastic! How are they doing today? Are they in the ground or large containers?!
Fantastic - thanks for watching!
Nice! Thanks for sharing your experience. How are peach trees doing today?! Did you put them in the ground or large containers?
Great video. I would have planted at 10 days. But the idea of skipping cold stratification is a good way to skip a year. If you sprout them in summer by spring you can graft the seedlings onto a mature tree and probably get fruit from it the following year. If you are hybridizing that is quick results for a fruit tree. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Grafting a peach seedling (the scion) onto another mature peach tree (the rootstock)? I thought the seedling is the rootstock in grafting

Haha! Thanks! Here's part 2 follow up for this peach tree! ua-cam.com/video/VfAqMcFpisA/v-deo.html
The first two pits opened more easily that I was expecting. The 3rd one the seed flew out on the table!
Same! 😄 I will try doing it with the help of a large bath towel next time. More containment for the projectiles.
@@therealitinerantgardener594 That will help. That’s what I will use next time!
My seed was evenly split vertically and I thought it wouldn't sprout but decided to try anyways and after 2 weeks it still came to life!
Fantastic! Hope you get a lot of fruit and thanks for watching!

God willing, I’ll have a small peach orchard by spring!
I hope they all grow well for you and let me know how they do!

Fantastic!
just a little info about sprouting i sprout pecan nuts the same way do it in jan i use about a dozen pecans lay on its side about 1 inch deep in good potting soil damppen place in indirect sun light dont let it freeze in about 6-8 weeks you should see tiny pink shoot growing then two leaves as weather warms let them have about 1 hr sun shine the bring back in as they grow add a little more sun time ive had about 80% success do ing this use a deep bucket for these so the tap root will have room to grow i made the mistake one time the tap root grew in coil like a spring ( too small bucket) use 5 gal bucket with drain holes if you can if grows leaves it has a tap root it comes out first but you dont see it let it grow to 12in tall before moving to its own bucket P S dont do anything to the pecans except put in soil

@@TheTexasGardener do you have fruit tree grafting videos?
How are your seeds doing? Are you planting in ground or large containers?

Would it be easier to put that seed in potting soil from the beginning ? And what’s the temperature for this prosses ,looks like outside .
You could put it in the soil however if the seed doesn’t take or isn’t viable then you loose a month or longer before you realize it’s not coming up. With the process in the video you will know in 7-10 days if the seed is starting and then it’s an easy transfer to the soil. I kept it indoors at the start as it was cold outside. Thanks for watching!
Yes you can start in the soil. I like this process because you can see if the seed is going to germinate much quicker. I start several seeds at the same time and then use the strongest of the group. Thanks for watching!
Are you only growing from grafts? Thanks for watching!
Does this method work with plum seeds as well (allowing you to bypass cold stratification)?
