The song is talking to Neil Young, who wrote "Southern Man" smearing the entire South. Neil attacked the entire South, so this song asks Neil if he feels guilty for the Watergate scandal in the North. The message of this song is: don't smear everyone for the actions of a few. Great tune, glad you enjoyed it.
Neil was a Canadian so he wouldn't feel guilty about Watergate at all. As far as he was concerned, Southern Man, encompassed any American man. Much like the Guess Who's American Woman.
They are not talking to Neil about Watergate; they are talking to everyone. If the other southerners don't seem to care about what the few are doing then I think it's fair to call them out on it. I think people lynching others because of the color of their skin is a lot worse than someone spying on their political enemies, but that could just be me.
"the actions of a few". It would have been nice if there had only been so few.
No, they’re from Jacksonville, FL, but they recorded at Muscle Shoals Sounds Studio in Alabama. So, Alabama was like a second home for them.
Muscle or Mussel?
@@dizastro5437, “Muscle”, for sure.
@dizastro5437 It's Muscle, but it is in reference to mussels. When the city was named, mussels hadn't yet broadly established it's distinct spelling from muscle.
I’m born and raised in Alabama and I seen Lynyrd Skynyrd three times before the plane crash in 77. On July 4, 1974 my first ever concert was Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top and they touring together again in 2024 and I already got my tickets. I’ll be 70 years old this year and I still attend several concerts every year! Let’s Rock..
This was a response to Neil's dis-track called "Southern Man," where he sings, very critically, about the racial history of the South. Might be the original dis-tracks.
@@vandalayindustries3057 THANKS! What do I win? Why is it cringey, BTW? It's straight factual, explaining why Neil Young's name is in the song. Why is it pandering, and to whom? There was no editorial in my words. Neil WAS very critical of the South in his song, and they responded.
Gotta check out their song “Simple Man.” I think parents should play this song for their children when they’re old enough to understand. It’s another CLASSIC!!!
Being from Alabama this song is so bittersweet for me because it takes me home in my mind, but it makes me homesick at the same time. 🥲💗 My uncle was a studio musician at Muscle Shoals back in the day and played on studio tracks for all these folks from the 60s and 70s. He has so many stories!
"Sweet Home Chicago" is your song! A blues song from 1936, done by many artists. Check out Blues Brothers version - And see the movie The Blues Brothers from 1980, it's full of iconic artists like James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles. An epic movie full of madness and coolness, filmed in Chicago.
There are like a dozen songs about Chicago. Sweet Home Chicago, My KInd of Town, Take Me Back to Chicago, Dear Chicago, Chicago at Night, Meet Me in Chicago, etc.
Take Me Back to Chicago is my fave and I've only been to Chicago once!
Skynyrd is from Jacksonville, FL. They recorded this in Muscle Shoals, AL. We bump this tune in Bryant Denny Stadium errrry Saturday and all week and errrr day!! ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!
Also, you have SWEET HOME CHICAGO!!!! Eric Clapton's version is my fave.
That’s The Honkettes singing backing vocals.
Yes, there's a great live version of this! Their 1977 Oakland concert which also has the great live performance of "Free Bird" - to me, their most famous song. Check it out!
My boys from Skynyrd arefrom Jacksonville Florida. ALABAMA,MUSVLE SHOALS IS WHERE THEY RECORDED RECORDS!
They’re from Jacksonville Florida Dawg. “That Smell.” “Ballad of Curtis Leow” will change your life
5:09 This song is DEFINITELY iconic here in Bama. This and Dixieland Delight by the group Alabama. Definitely need to react to it if you haven’t ever heard it.
Alabama Crimson Tide…every game! We love our football 🏈
Any cover band at a bar…every. single. time.
Loved your reaction man. That wasn't just bringing in some piano at the end,, that was Billy Powell on piano. A fundamental in longtime member of Lynyrd skynyrd. He drove that whole track man. And yeah he totally shows out and dominates near the end there. Imagine playing that yourself, on a real old school piano which is what he always did. Man he had multiple grand pianos and they would fly them around in their crappy twin inch and turboprop that finally crashed in 1977 and killed enough people that the band was effectively over.
Chicago has "The Night Chicago Died" by Paper Lace. Another 1970s tune.
I always loved Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama. There are a couple of songs I can think of for Chicago. Frank Sinatra doing "My Kind of Town (Chicago is)" is iconic. My other favorite is the Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah song "Lake Shore Drive". Even though I live in the suburbs now, I still consider myself a Chicago girl at heart. I grew up there during the 1960's & 70's.
They are from Jacksonville Florida. All buried here too.
ive been listening to this song for decades, and its the first time i have ever actually SEEN some of the lyrics. i always heard the line "they been known to pick a song or two" as "they been known to be somber too"...
Ditto:Their 1977 Oakland concert which also has the great live performance of "Free Bird" - to me, their most famous song. Check it out!
I had to add my second comments first the back up singers are 3 women Ronnie Van Zant named " the Honkettes" and Skynyrd had 3 lead guitars and Ronnie would whistle and say "bring all mules out here" and here they came Gary Rossington leading a crew of bad ass guitar player and their beloved bass player and his hats 😂😂love them!
You absolutely see the live version. Because Ronnie Van Zandt was lovely.
I wish I had seen him before he died
It definitely still bumps here😂😂
Everybody's from Alabama when this song plays. Universal banger.
So true!
You have to listen to Meet me in Chicago by Buddy Guy. Total Chicago anthem!
Yes and Chicago Chicago that toddling town Frank Sinatra. 😊
Right on, I absolutely love those stacked Harmony backing vocals on this. I love it to death.
When you cross into the state of Alabama, the sign says, “Welcome To SWEET HOME ALABAMA.”
Indeed it does.. i have lived in Memphis since i was very young. My husband is from Bama he inherited a house in Bama he wants to move into the house but i do not want to leave Memphis and i will not. So we compromised we will live in Bama half the year and in Memphis half the yr. I don't want to but i will.
Driving into Alabama on any major road, instead of a wekcone sign....the giant sign says "Sweet Home Alabama ".....truth!!!
Lynard Skynard Awesome! Great reaction! Thanks ❤️ Much Love! #Hangovergang
Lynyrd Skynyrd are from Jacksonville, FL.
This is a CLASSIC!!!
When Ronnie says Turn it up, I turn it up!❤
Love this reaction I’m from Florence Alabama live in Indiana now but will be moving back when we retire in 5 years, The answer to your question yes we still rock out with this song ,Thanks so much for this one much love ❤
I LOVE Lynyrd Skynyrd! Try 38 Special, "Hold on Loosely". That's another golden oldie I think you'd like. Also, try Lynyrd's "Free Bird".
THEY ARE NOT FROM ALA.!!!!!!!THEY ARE FROM MY HOMETOWN, JACKSONVILLE, FL., AND PROUD OF IT!!!!!! ONE OF THE VERY BEST SOUTHERN ROCK BANDS!!! LOVE THEM WAY BACK WHEN, STILL LOVE THEM TODAY!!!!!
They're actually from Jacksonville. Florida, where free bird live is on first street in jacksonville beach
Lynyrd Skynyrd is from Jacksonville Florida
I never could understand why they are singing a song called Sweet Home Alabama when Skynyrd is from Jacksonville Florida! If youre gunna do Skynyrd you have to hear "The Ballad of Curtis Loew". As for Chicago, theres a Band named Chicago, now thats a tribute. And Chicago is one of the best Rock Bands of all time. They had one of the best Guitarists that has ever been, Terry Kath. Shon, you HAVE to see Chicago, "25 or 6 to 4" Live at Tanglewood!!!
Great reaction Shon(as usual), gotta check out Ballad of Curtis Loew, Simple Man, That smell. Really they are all good, just 3 of my favs
Yeah we do have good food down here in the South and hospitality too
It's funny that you mentioned Chicago needs a song while reacting to this. Check out Sweet Home Chicago. (Not joking. It's a real song)
You would love “Call me the Breeze” by the kings of southern rock !!
I lived in Birmingham Alabama working for Foot Locker in 1992. They played this song ON THE BLACK STATIONS TOO my man. You are the GOAT 🐐
You must do " Mr banker", "cheatin woman" and " Mississippi kid ".🔥🔥🔥🔥🙏🙏🙏🙏
Skynerd rocks!
Ok now you got to hear Neil Young's Southern Man which inspired this dis track.
Just went to Alabama for vacation loved it.I was ready to pack up and move there for real.lol
I saw them in concert a few months ago. Hearing this song live was so fun. I videoed the whole thing and listen to it often
Love this song... maybe bc i live in Alabama... 😆
Interesting side note ... you heard him say something at the end of the song about his donuts.... well, as the story goes, during the recording session for this song he looked up and the people outside the recording area where all eating his donuts that he had brought in special for himself. So the remark during the recording. They decided to leave it in. But it has nothing to do with the song lyrics...😅 damn my donuts....
As someone who grew up as Southern Baptist, our church camp changed the words to "sweet home up in heaven...." 😂
We just sang the chorus!
The Ballad of Curtis Loew is a great Skynard song to react to.
Now listen to “All Summer Long”, by Kid Rock. It takes from this song. 👍
Shon, you MUST listen to Freebird live in Oakland ! It will blow you away!
The teacher that they named the band after, Leonard Skinner, taught at my alma mater, Glynn Academy before teaching them in Jacksonville. That being said, their crash was before I was born...but I was raised on Lynyrd Skynyrd. 😊
BANGER 🔥 🔥🔥❤❤❤💕
Such a jam
Skynyrd is from Jacksonville Florida.
"Freebird" is a must-listen.
Everyone in the south bumps this weekly. Keep going with the great reactions. Need to expand into movies
Southerner who listens to this WAY less. Because we have radio stations who treat this as if it were the national anthem. I’m way over this song and Skynyrd has better ones.
Definitely NOT a shout out to Neil Young! Neil Young had a song trashing the Southern Man and their response was that they didn’t need him around.
Skynyrd MISTAKINGLY thought that Neil was trashing southern men.
Little known fact. When Ronnie sings “I heard Neil Young sing about her,” you can hear in the left speaker, the producer Al Cooper, sing the words “Southern Man” in a Neil Young like voice.
@@Gordy63I’ve heard this song all my life and even played it with a cover band I was in in my younger days and have never noticed that until now. Thanks for sharing this fun fact!
@@Gordy63wow just heard it. Thanks
Cool video, never saw that..Awesome Shon!!
Jacksonville Florida
Do a video of this live from anywhere, the crowd goes crazy. Knebworth was a great concert, best live version of Freebird, in my opinion.
Unity🇺🇸Sweet Home
Gimme Three Steps, That Smell, Saturday Night Special, Gimme Back My Bullets, Simple Man, Ballad of Curtis Lowe, and sooo many more......Too many bangers to list lol
From Jacksonville Florida
Sweet home Chicago is a song check it out.
The background singers are called the honkettes these 3 og the and one of them was killed in the plane crash as was he🎉r brother who was one of the lead guitarists
Awesome reaction 😮😮😮
Great song. I rarely suggest the Live version but I do here! 'Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird - 7/2/1977 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium (Official)'. This is the best version hands down of this tune IMHO. Recorded just 3 months before the plane crash. Look for the one that is 11:48 in length not the 7 min versions. Cheers.
Since the Honkettes weren't at the Oakland Coliseum performance, I recommend Live at Knebworth. See my posts above for this song and Free Bird performed at Knebworth. That's my favorite live Free Bird rendition just because Ronnie ticked off Mick Jagger and The Stones so bad, they refused to come out for hours due to Ronnie putting his guitar army on the Stone's custom built tongue shaped catwalk.
This is played before Alabama home football games and when they say Sweet Home Alabama, everyone yells Roll Tide Roll!
They are from Jacksonville Florida
Lol Chicago has an anthem, SWEET HOME CHICAGO. blues classic.
It’s actually a big middle finger to Neil who’s from Canada-
Funky white people music hits hard to me sometime
You should check out Foghat's Sweet Home Chicago and ZZ Top's Jesus Just Left Chicago.
A song about Chicago...
Foghat - "Sweet Home Chicago"🤘😎
Shon, check out The Blues Brothers’ cover of “Sweet Home Chicago”!!
their song-you got that right, would be a good one for you to listen to.
That's not a choir. That's three women. They were so talented.
ok this is good thank you
Background singers are the Honkettes
You should check out 38 Special
They were from Jacksonville FL
Time to react to Neil’s song…Southern Man…
Dude you need to react to double trouble. Cry for the bad man and gimme back my bullets. And the band is from Jacksonville Florida
They are from Florida.
My daughter saw me watching your reaction and she wants your hair! But then she asked why I don't have muscles too 😞
If you want Chicago, you should check out the band Chicago. You won't be disappointed.
❤🔥
I have a love/hate relationship with this song… as a Tennesseean, Alabama is the bane of my existence. But as a Southerner, songs about the Southland warm my heart. To simplify how it is… we are rivals (southern states) when it’s just us, but if any outsiders (North, West) put any of us down, we will stand together to defend the south
SERIOUSLY !!
Check out "Wild Thing" by Sam Kinison! One of the craziest songs/videos you will ever see!
ua-cam.com/video/0DbDI32y9tU/v-deo.html

Hello my wonderful and musical friend 🎉, hey Shon how ya doing? I've requested several songs over the last 8 months, and i know you get swamped with requests, I haven't heard any FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE music as of yet, so I hope you will finally do a reaction to this amazing Artist!!
Please do a reaction to her song, video reaction to: "THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER" Thank you for bringing us such great tunes friends!!😮❤🎉
Trooper does a song called (raise a little hell)
Please react to Free Bird live in Oakland and also live version of Call Me The Breeze ❤
No honey their from Jax FL where I'm from 😊❤
Born and raised Alabamian. It’s a state anthem!
The band was from Jacksonville, Florida. This song was a reply to Neil Young’s Southern Man, where he insulted southerners. The band did spend time in Alabama at the world famous Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. The Swampers were the studio musicians.
React to Once You Understand by the band Think
I know this is a different thing to ask, but are you still in Chicago? I’m an Illinoisan myself, but in Central Illinois.
You really need to do some Jackyl. Start with The Chainsaw song. You won't be disappointed..😁
