The Governor at the time was George Wallace the segregationist, they say boo boo boo after saying in Birmingham they love the Governor. The song was a response to Neil Young's Southern Man saying don't lump in all southern men as being racist. After the this song came out it was thought they hated each other but couldn't be further from the truth, they liked and respected each other and if you look at the final album cover of Skynyrd Van Zant is wearing a Neil Young shirt
Absolutely correct. I first saw them when they still had not released albums in 1972 at a free concert at San Diego State. Great show even then. My friend and I sat behind some Hell's Angels and my friend spilled his beer on one of them. We bought them a round and everything was cool, but at 17 we were scared. The music took attention away from us.
I Remember..!!!
Democrats invented and enforced segregation and forced sterilization laws until Buc vs Bell forced sterilization laws were overturned. Many of these eugenecists still promote the same policies as part of their "great white burden" to manage us, they only switched from overt to subversive from coercive to marketed. I have no love for the government neolib nannymarxists or the warmarxist neocons both want rights and monet for war & "the greater good".
@@sketchtherapy1218 glad you have all the answers and are using your time to post on youtube videos about Sweet Home Alabama on a react channel....... congrats
They put the Governor's name at the bottom of the welcome sign at that time, Georgia too. "Signed, Gov Lester Maddox". After that they'd give you a warning about littering.
Alabama girl here!I know you reacted to Freebird already but you should watch "Freebird" live at the Oakland Colliseum 7/2/77. It starts out slow but by the end of the song its legendary. Since you like guitars I think youll really enjoy this! Also it wasent long after (3 months) that their plane crashed killing three of them.
Agreed. Amazing performance
If they want to see the guitars throughout the solo they should consider the Knebworth performance. Camera stays in the crowd too much in the Oakland performance
Seconded.
This song also talks about Muscle Shoals, a town in northern Alabama that is famous for having a recording studio where a lot of great music was recorded there. Even the Rolling Stones used it.
The swampers were muscle Shoals studio backing band 🎸😃
I didn’t know that but that makes more sense because of Hank Jrs lyrics in “Feeling Better”.. “between Macon and Muscle Shoals”
Aretha Franklin, Wilson Picket, Percy Sledge, The Rolling Stones, Etta James, Paul Simon, Keith Richards, Bob Seger, Willy Nelson, Bob Dylan are just a few of the Artists who recorded in the Shoals.
The studio they recorded at is 5 mins from my house in Sheffield, AL. Great talent has come through the Shoals area. Glad to call it home.
Neil Young wrote a couple of songs about racism in the south, “Southern Man” & “Alabama”, that seemed to paint all southerners as racists. “Sweet Home Alabama” was basically their response that not all southerners agreed with Governor Wallace the same way not all Northerners agreed with watergate. They did later say that they are big fans of Neil Young and they respect him as an artist and Neil Young said the same of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
^
If you guys have watched Forest Gump, the movie references Governor George Wallace who tried to keep schools segregated. Forest accidentally stumbles into this historical event (one of many). Later he says they shot that Governor when he was running for President (he was paralyzed).
Southern Man reaction!
Neil Young is a typical leftist Yankee who thinks he's better than Southerners. Its just a product of the fake civil war story's written by the victor.
@@wandameadows5736 Neil is Canadian.
I haven’t seen anyone recommend Simple Man from them. It’s such a sweet soulful tune.
Tuesday gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd is a must hear,if you haven't heard it
A great documentary is called Muscle Shoals, many bands have went to Muscle Shoals and made hit albums including Aretha Franklin. In New York they wanted to control Aretha and she was just on the edge of being a super star. She recorded in Muscle Shoals Alabama she took off and never looked back.
OUTSTANDING movie!
The portion of the song referring to Governor George Wallace in particular made some believe that Lynyrd Skynyrd disagreed with desegregation, seeing as how the governor stood for "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever".
But others interpreted the lyrics as a reminder to Young that not all Southerners are the same. "We thought Neil was shooting all the ducks in order to kill one or two," Van Zant later said. "We're Southern rebels but, more than that, we know the difference between right and wrong." In fact, those "boos" are thought to imply that the band disagreed with Wallace's politics-and that bit about Watergate seems to be a pointed remark about the hypocrisy of the North, which had its own problems, too.
The song was in response to the Neil Young song Southern Man. You can hear him mentioned in the lyrics.
The Neil Young reference is about his song 'Southern Man', the song seems to paint a wider picture that all Southerners are racist, but the members of Skynyrd said there are no hard feelings between Neil Young and Skynyrd.
Yep - Neil used to get death threats when he played in Alabama after this song came out, but he and the boys from Skynyrd were actually good friends. In fact, Neil offered his song 'Powderfinger' to Lynyrd Skynyrd but they passed, saying they felt he would do it better. Hell, Neil was an honourary pallbearer at Ronnie Van Zandt's funeral.
"Alabama" was a Neil Young song on Harvest.
Skynyrd always, in their short life, was eye opening. Check out “the ballad of Curtis Loew “. It’s a great song!
Ballad of Curtis Loew is a good one you should react to.
I’m an Alabamian. Trust me there is nothing better than a summer day blasting this song with the windows down!
This song a classic one. Another classic y'all need to check out is Dilbar by Nora. It was played everywhere in Europe when it came out. You might of heard it before, not sure.
Not just Europe. Australia too. I remember when it dropped
Please do the Ballad of Curtis Loew next 🙏
I think the song Simple Man by them is the best inspirational song ever. It completely cuts through the bullshit....
You would enjoy The Steve Miller Band - The Joker
My FAVORITE Band!! Forever
You guys should react to Free Bird another great song by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Some people thought that Skynyrd was from Alabama but their actually from Jacksonville Florida. Another great song from the muscle shoals sessions is lend a helping hand. The song means sooo much then as it does now!
Skynyrd was a weird, but great ensemble. Made up of southern conservatives, LA liberals, peace and love hippies… and what they made was timeless music.
Not really conservative. They were anti gun and even this song is I think is being sarcastic since the Governor was both racist and dishonest
@@dannyworten5876 Well there are interviews of Van Zant saying that this song was tongue in cheek. And that he not only respect a Neil Young, but liked him an awful lot. And also is seeing wearing Neil Young shirts in Many band photos.
@@dannyworten5876 And you are correct aside from guitarist Gary Rossington and of course new singer Johnny Van Zandt. Both were pretty conservative.
Wow... young couple listen to a very great Rock Song from the 70s. I was a teenager at that time
Greatest Southern Rock song ever written!
They were my very first live concert experience. Mobile born.
I didn’t understand the references when I was a kid when I got older finding out what they meant made me like the song even more
They were referring to George Wallace, the Governor that stood in the door to block court ordered desegregation of the University of Alabama.
One of my favorite songs for the great music and vibe..not sure how I feel about some of the references contained within
Well you need to listen to Neil Young’s song Southern Man since its referenced on this song
You got to watch Freebird live. 1977. Incredible to see them live.
This is also the first song to have “Goddamn” in it. If you listen towards the end of the song you can hear it.
Listen to *Lynyrd Skynyrd -Ed and Gary talk Sweet Home Alabama Sweet Home Alabama (LIVE 1973)* on Ytube. Gary explains the Boo, Boo, Boo part of song
you may recognize the riff from Kid Rock's "All Summer Long"
Hey! From ALABAMA here. Love you guys. ROLL TIDE!!!!
Love this! Grew up in Bham, AL! ❤❤❤
I’m country and I’ve heard this song 1000s of time
Nice catch on the governor booing, took me years to pay enough attention to catch that.
I love lynyrd skynyrd they done this song at fame radio station in in muscle shoals Alabama that’s were I’m from, thanks for doing this song great reaction
When I was in college, I got tickets to see Lynyrd Skynyrd. Just before the concert, they were involved in a plane crash. Three members of the group were killed: Frontman Ronnie Van Sant, Guitarist Steve Gaines, and back up singer Cassie Gaines. The concert was canceled, of course. Still have my tickets to this day.
Freebird 1977 Oakland coliseum ,a day at on the green . Master full guitarist man . They r lit trust
Merry Clayton (Gimme Shelter) on backing vocals 🎶🤩🙌👍
If you like this you'll probably also mess with something like "Don't Fear (the Reaper)" by Blue Oyster Cult 😉
Netflix has a documentary on the band and its excellent. Gary Rossington is the only original surviving member.
AYE.....You gotta react to That Smell .
This was also on the movie Con air
BAMA girl here and proud and they sing this at all Alabama Crimson tide games.
In Birmingham we wrote the governor, boo boo boo, now we all did what we could do. The Governor was a racist and they , the band, and most people didn't agree with him. You need to listen to The Ballad of Curtis Loew, it's about a black blues player 3 band members loved when they were children in the late 50's and early 60's.
More great variety!
Another great Southern rock song you should check out is Flirtin' with Disaster by Molly Hatchett. It's a nonstop banger, just be careful if you listen to it while driving 😉.
it played in con air with nicolas cage movie my top 10 movie
Georgia boy here and I love sweet home Alabama
Check out "call me the breeze"
You should check out "Gimme Three Steps" it is a fun song about a serious situation.
Aloha, I was bastitized in a stock tank in Northern Alabama...Jr high p.e. teecha...
She would get along great with my wife as another Horror fanatic. Nothing scares her. Try Led Zeppelin- Kashmir live at Celebration Day performance. Maybe you have , I dunno.
They had this song I believe on the movie called Con Air with Nicholas Cage
🔥
React to Free - Alright Now ( vevo ) ( Note : This is at a massive outdoor concert , just so you'll know you have the right video that your reacting too )
It says in Birmingham they love the governor. That's what the song says. I live in Huntsville Alabama

This song is in reference to Neil Young's song Alabama. You need to listen to that.

👋🏻♥️
No emotion from her. Doesn't blink much
She's right, the First Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the best one, but it was made in 1974 🤣👌Much higher rated than all of the others. Really, really freaky.
Lyrics,. In Birmingham they love the governor (boo-hoo-hoo),. They did not agree with Governor Wallace.
They also say the governor is true
There are two types of people in world who think this is a good song: Those that were born and raised in Alabama, and those that have never been to Alabama...
Isn't it they loved a Governor?
Neil youngs song southernman has alot to do with this song.
Bob Riley was not Governor back then Gorge Wallace was and he was true blue!
My brother. Alabama's govenor was George Wallace. The song came out in 1974. Wallace in the 1960s was a presidential candidate as well. His stance was Segregation today. Segregation tomorrow. Segregation forever. In 1970 he was elected Governor of Alabama. In 1972 a guy, last name started with a B, tried to assassinate him. He shot 4 people Wallace being the target. It severed his spine and paralyzed him from the waist down. Wallace was beloved by Alabama. His acceptance speech for Governor in 1970 was written by a leader of the Ku Klux Klan. I remember him standing in front of a school with a baseball bat saying no Black person is going to white schools in his run. After his assassination attempt he mellowed and got nicer. But it was a little too little, a little too late.
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 wow. That I did not know.
Something went down with Neil Young & Skynyrd ... Neil Young calling out Skynyrd as racist that's why you hear Neil Young in the song they were at it for years! But Neil came out saying he was wrong and they all made up LOL

Great song. Southern rock's quinticential classic. Alabama is a beautiful state by east of the Rockies standard. The majority of the people are super nice. But unfortunately the vein of racism which still exists taxes it.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is not from Alabama. They actually call Florida home
He’s say in Birmingham “they” love the governor.. he’s booing governor George Wallace which wanted segregation now and forever. The “they” in the lyrics are talking about the people that supported Wallace. Songs like this helped stop racism and more than people know. People see the rebel flag Skynyrd used and go straight to racism, and in fact it’s the opposite. It was heritage that’s it
They were referring to George Wallace the segregationist. Boo, Boo, Boo. These boys were from the South but they were not racists like some will portray them.
The Govenor was George Wallace. This was in the era of civil rights movements, and vietnam. Look up Selma Alabama riots if you're intersted
