They are pretty much the definition of Southern Rock. Hard drinking, bar fighting, ass kicking, All American band. Legendary band! They wrote some of the most famous songs in music period.
This is a southern American rock classic masterpiece!
These boys could never be duplicated ever!!
Lynyrd Skynyrd's "SIMPLE MAN" and "The "Ballad of Curtis Loew".
Ah yes, The Ballad of Curtis Loew... the ubiquitous recommendation meant to counter an accusation that was never made.
@@Hexon66 Wow! I had to really think about your comment to unravel it's meaning and intent. It didn't take long though for me to realize that it is an accusation constructed from it's own racist source. It required an element of mental gymnastics, false assumptions, and unhinged bias from which it eminated.
Simple Man and Tuesdays Gone are beautiful.
" That Smell " or " Call Me the Breeze " you won't be disappointed ✌️♥️
I absolutely 100% agree , both crackin songs
Pick any skynyrd song and you won't be disappointed.
You need to hear ,"gimme three steps" great song
I agree Bill, one of my favorites!
Alabama's highway sign now says Welcome to Sweet Home Alabama
Gimme Three Steps 🔥🤘🏽☮️♥️
So many Skynyrd classics: 'Gimme Back My Bullets', 'That Smell', 'Call Me the Breeze', 'Curtis Lowe'--and my person favourite, 'All I Can Do Is Write About It'.
I have asked several people to react to" All I Can do is Write About it" no one has so far "Call Me the Breeze" is a great, great song
On the Hunt, T for Texas, Travellin Man, I Need You. Underrated but Amazing!!

Lynyrd Skynyrd is without a doubt one of the greatest American rock bands of all time. Ronnie, Steve and Cassie have been gone over 40 years and you still hear about 6 or 8 of their songs in rotation on classic rock radio. There's only about 5 years of music with Ronnie, almost every song is great.
"Gimme Three Steps" is one of my favs, as others have mentioned. It is yet another vibe; not like Freebird or Sweet Home Alabama!
Ronnie Van Zant - lead vocals
Ed King - lead guitar, backing vocals (first "woo" at the end of the last chorus)
Leon Wilkeson - bass guitar, backing vocals (second "woo" at the end of the last chorus)
Bob Burns - drums
Billy Powell - piano
Allen Collins - rhythm guitar (left channel)
Gary Rossington - rhythm guitar (right channel), acoustic guitar (left channel)
Al Kooper - backing vocals (left channel) - *Al was the band's producer.
Clydie King - background vocals
Merry Clayton - background vocals
(The actual LP credits "*Clydie King" and "**Merry Clayton and Friends" [*Courtesy of Chelsea Records, ** Courtesy of Ode Records] )
Clydie King was a session singer who recorded as "Brown Sugar" in the 70's and had a single, "Loneliness (Will Bring Us Together Again)"
Merry Clayton was a soul and gospel singer. She sang the duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones' "Gimmie Shelter".
Clydie and Merry frequency sang together.
*Some fun facts - Ed King is the guy you hear counting "1,2,3" at the beginning of the track. Ed said all the notes to the guitar solos came to him in a dream? "I always sleep with a guitar next to the bed. There are two solos in that song. Both of them came to me note-for-note in a dream." Ed also said, in later years it was impossible to sit in with other musicians to play the song because "You've got to play a tad behind the beat". Bob Burns the original drummer could do it! When Ed and Bob joined in again to play at the group's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, it all came back.
And on ‘Inspiration’....Neil Young
Harri, in the last verse, Ronnie mentions "Muscle Shoals". That name is referring to a famous recording studio in Sheffield, Alabama where many great artists recorded over the years including, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, George Michael, Wilson Pickett, Willie Nelson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joe Cocker, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart and many more. The studio was originally an old concrete building built in the 1940s that was used as a coffin showroom. In 1969 a group of musicians called the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section decided to start their own operation and converted the building to a recording studio. In 2006 it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places!
The studio band was called “The Swampers” hence the line “Muscle Shoals has got The Swampers. And They’ve been known to pick a song or two. Lord they get me off so much, pick me up when I’m feeling blue.” The Swampers played with Paul Simon on Kodachrome, Loves Me Like a Rock, and Still Crazy.
@@amyk9175 Yes, "The Swampers" was the nickname for the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. Great players! The nickname was coined by producer Denny Cordell during recording sessions for Leon Russell. The original group hired by Rick Hall of FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals in the early 1960s, was Norbert Putnam, David Briggs, and Jerry Carrigan, who created hit records that brought recognition and stature to the studio. This group was lured to Nashville studios for independent careers. The replacement musicians were Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, David Hood and Jimmy Johnson, initially called "the Second FAME Gang", but widely known by the nickname "The Swampers"
There is a good documentary on UA-cam about the recording industry in Muscle Shoals!
Muscle Shoals Shoals guitarist Wayne Perkins helped launch Reggae
as he played all the guitar parts on Bob Marley's , Catch a Fire..
That's our Anthem here in Alabama!!!!! When they turn it,we turn it up!!!!
Lionel Richy and the group The Commodores (for which he sang the lead) are from Montgomery, Alabama the state capital.
One of the awesome backing singers obviously having a ball was Merry Clayton, who sang on The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter". Two legendary performances for a start!
I know you’ll dig Call Me The Breeze, Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man, That Smell…just the tip of the iceberg.
Back in the days bands were signed for their music. Not because they looked pretty. Lynard Skynard looked like they were getting ready to go feed the livestock. But sounded amazing.
The confederate flag didn't help either.
@@JB-yb4wn It helped with their base, much in the way the Allman Brothers having Jaimoe in their band lessened their popularity in the South.
@@Hexon66
Well an unscheduled airplane crash ended these "good ol' boys" career.
@@JB-yb4wn Leave Old Dixie alone....it's about heritage, not hate...
The Ballad of Curtis Loew is a great song along with Tuesday's gone and Simple Man. I grew up listening to them and loved them!! I was 11 when their plane crashed and killed the lead singer, Ronnie Van Zandt, guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister, backup singer Cassie Gaines. Such a shame because Ronnie had a lot more songs in him that the world never got to hear. Sadly, the last surviving member of the original Skynyrd is Gary Rossington and he just underwent emergency heart surgery two days ago.
Without music who are we? Music is soul and spirit.
'Gimme three steps' is one from them you need to check out
Great song !
"Simple Man" and "That Smell" are excellent songs by Skynrd, Mr. Saturday Night Special" is also very good.
Ah! American southern rock. Rockin out in the back yard. So stinkin good
They are one of the greats. I was lucky enough to have seem them at the Oakland Coliseum in July, 1977 with Santana, the Outlaws and Peter Frampton. One of the best concerts I've ever been to...they KILLED it on Free Bird that day! Sadly Ronnie, Steven and his sister Cassie died about 3 months later.
What an amazing experience and memory!
There are clips from that gig on youtube, and, you're right, they are amazing!
I was there too. Such a fantastic Day on the Green I will never forget #rockon #classof77
I was supposed to see Skynyrd in Philly the weekend after they died. Saw Outlaws 4 times , they were very underrated.
Sweet Home Alabama- the one song that makes me smile every single time I hear it. 😊
One of the greatest hits of all times!! Turn it up!!!! 🎶🎶❤️
With Ronnies little brother Johnny taking over lead vocals, Lynyrd Synyrd is still touring! A friend saw them in NY last summer!
Gimme Three Steps is another good one!
The song is basically a response to Neil Young's "Southern Man".Neil didn't take it personally,he loved it and thought he probably deserved it!
I always wanted to know what Neil Young thought of this song.
@@carloscortez3777 Neil and Ronnie remained friends after it.
Legend has it that Ronnie was buried in a Neil Young tshirt.
Also Neil's song "Alabama" from the album "Harvest"
@@carloscortez3777 Neil Young used to cover that song after the plane crash. He said it was a great song
Ballad of Curtis Lowe and Give me Three Steps. I think if you had a day to spend on it you should react to all their greatest hits. I'd hang in there and watch it. We southerners are a proud bunch.
So glad you enjoy LS's music. These guys were true musicians and created so many CLASSIC classic rock songs-whether it's called Southern Rock or Classic Rock-these tunes are classic masterpieces.
If your from here (Alabama) and this song comes on in any little bar, just hearing the beginning guitar, you get a lot of whoops and hollers lol. Such a classic and anthem for our state.
One of their greatest hits was Simple Man and I love Gimme Three Steps!
My absolute all time favorite band ever. This band had more talent than any other band ever . They do this in London and that's the best rendition I've ever seen cause Stevie Gaines and Allen Collins both plays to
Hello from Sweet Home Alabama!
Hello from Alabama. Turn it up.
CCR -Born on the Bayou!!!
There is a song by Johnny van zant called brickyard road that he did for his brother( the lead singer of Skynyrd) in honor and memory. It was my uncle's favorite song before he passed.
RIP Ed King. No one could play the lead on this like him.
Their plane crash and the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley a year later (Allman Brothers Band) killed such a great genre...Southern Rock. It has its own down home vibe with alot of soul and excellent musicianship
Many of their songs was originally wrote in Muscle shoals Alabama. If you have never watched the movie " Muscle Shoals " it's a must watch. You will love it. They mention " the swampers " in this song that is the rhythm section at FAME music studio back in the day.
My absolute all time favorite band ever !
Told u the king of music! Best band ever!
That Smell , Gimme 3 steps or the Ballad of Curtis Loew and many more! This is the earliest Rock song I remember I was 9 in 1978 and heard it on a Jukebox in a arcade.
This song is in response to Neil Young’s songs Southern Man and Alabama Ronnie didn’t like the fact that Neil bunched all southern in one group because not all Southern people are alike .
Ronnie was a Jacksonville, Fl man. LS recorded in Alabama and they drove through a small town in Alabama called Sweet Home on the way to the recordings.
@@diamondwchamp That's an interesting bit of info, thanks.
Very true. Van Zandt's come back line unfortunately just sounds insecure. But all song lyrics tend to oversimplify - there just isn't time to get into the necessary details. A songwriter is lucky if she/he can manage to create a memorable phrase. ;)
But they actually became good friends. In some concerts, they wore each other’s band shirts! 👍💕
Hi Harri, sending thanks for enjoying Lynard Skynyrd, I'm from Sweet Home Alabama.
Gimme 3 Steps, Call Me the Breeze, You Got that Right, I Know a little, Simple Man, Tuesday’s Gone, Saturday Night Special, That Smell, those are all the big ones. Every one a good song. You have your homework now. This will be on the test.
Can’t go wrong with any of those.
The "Ballad of Curtis Loew" "Working for MCA" just a few of Many Great Hits,Their Catalogue is Huge. (All Skynyrds music is Excellent) from an "Old Geezer Who was Teenager back Then.)
This song rocks out, you can't sit still with this song.
This is Lynyrd Skynyrd's reaction to Neil Young's anti-South songs Southern Man and Alabama.
GREAT> Next: The Marshall Tucker Band, another excellent Southern Rock band. Try, "Can't You See", live if possible. Great flute playing along with the rest.
That's awesome! Honky-tonk music! They have a catalog of soulful Southern rock bangers.
Muscle Shoals is a legendary recording center, rock, blues, country was recorded there. You mentioned Lionel Richie. He and the Commodores are from Alabama.
Ronnie wrote this song in response to some very negative songs about Alabama and the South by Neil Young.
The Commodores recorded their first hit in Muscle Shoals, Wishbone Studios. The Funky song, MACHINE GUN DID WELL in the charts, produced by Terry woodford and Clayton Ivey in this puzzy country we are now stuck in, Machine gun would be termed, subversive and banned.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD "ON THE HUNT",, "GIMME 3 STEPS" & "I KNOW A LITTLE"
Ah yes. SWA one of my favorite Skynyrd songs. There are so many. BTW, that Lionel Ritchie tune you were trying to remember is called Deep River Woman and he sings it with the iconic country group Alabama. ♪♫
Skynyrd’s T for Texas. It won’t disappoint. OMG and so many others
Please, please, please react to Lynyrd Skynyrd LIVE. I recommend Free Bird from 1976 at Knebworth. So much is missed with the studio versions.
Live version of T for Texas.... skynyrd!
Sweet LOVE Lionel Ritchie and the Commodores
Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Gimme Three Steps (the bass line just grabs me). Love watching you enjoy the music!
Free bird live is a must
Merry Clayton doing backing vocals.....nuff said 🎶🤯🤩👍
If I hear this song I gotta dance...no matter where I am...in the mall...in a movie theatre...anywhere.
Lionel Richie is from Alabama, so he probably mentioned the state in one of his songs. Would love to have you visit our wonderful state! 😊
Just right down the road in TN - Love the state of Alabama except when it comes to football ❤🎵✌🏈
@@giarogers Hi neighbor!
Just on your free time check out the live version of "Free Bird" live in Oakland 1977..its AMAZING.....
100. The band was formed in 1964 in Jacksonville FL as Backyard and became Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1969. Notably, that same year in Jacksonville The Allman Brothers Band was formed. Also that year, a man walked on the moon and a little rock festival known as Woodstock was held. It was a heck if a year - and I was out of town.
They used to record in Alabama at Musal Shoes !
Simple man great song. Gimme three step.
Simple Man will blow you away. Call me the Breeze is great.
Call me the breeze and ballad of curtis lowe are my favorites.
Definitely try They Call Me The Breeze!!!

Here is some more great songs they did Simple man, Saturday night special, Mississippi Kid , on the hunt, was I Right or wrong, the ballad of Curtis Lowe , mister banker. There is so many great songs to choice from I could keep going but I don’t want to overwhelm you
Good music lives on no matter what genre. (I live about 8 minutes from Ricky Medlocke, a current member).
We will see them for the third or fourth time in August...Johnnie Van Zant does his brother justice ❤
Turn it up! Hometown boys ❤️🔥❤️
When this song comes on in Alabama...we stand and put our hand over our heart!
So happy for you! Well after their passing, voted my High School graduating class song, Free Bird, Class of 81 😁
One of my favorites!! For at least 5 years this was a ringtone of my phone. Great group, great tune 🎶❤️🎼
Harri I love you man! You have the same passion for good music of all genres as I do. I was once in a band in the 90's . First as the drummer then the lead singer...miss those days.
Thank you it brings back great memories !!
I first heard this in the car radio while in Florida at age 18. I remember thinking this is a hit.
All great. Simple Man my fav.
You really should be doing the live versions from the 1977 concert in Oakland.
A "related" act is .38 Special with Donnie Van Zant who is the brother of their lead singer Ronnie Van Zant.
Check out I Need You, Gimme Three Steps, Working for the MCA, Call Me the Breeze, Double Trouble, Gimme Back my Bullets, Saturday night Special. The list goes on and on. Great Band. I had the pleasure of seeing them three times in small venues The Beacon Theatre, C W Post and the Calderon,You should also check out Marshall Tucker. They are a unique band that blends country with jazz.
gimme me 3 steps another one of their good songs makes me forget i dont have my legs any longer . i just wanna get up and dance
Harri...."Give Me Three Steps"...it will make you smile ;)
Alabama is a state that is approximately 365 miles long and stretches from the Gulf of Mexico well into the Smokey Mountains. It is about 200 miles wide. Huntsville is the NASA rocket development center where many of the moon rockets were built and astronauts were trained. Muscle Shoals was a recording studio where many country and blues singers honed their skills. Birmingham has a huge medical research center as part of the University of Alabama at Birmingham UAB. It is also the home of Tuskegee University started by Booker T. Washington. The engineering department works closely with NASA scientists. It is one of the first Historically Black universities in the United States.
You really short changed Muscle Shoals and Sheffield. So many of the GREATS traveled from around the .world to come here to record and come up with new songs. That was crappy .to skip that.
They lost the heart of the band in Ronnie Van Zant, they lost a great young guitarist in Stevie Gaines and his sister one of the back up singers Cassie Gaines. I t was almost as devastating to me as the death of Duane Allman of the Allman Bros. Band.
simple man is another great song. 👍
Reminds me of my high school days at Robert E Lee high in Montgomery, Alabama.
Call Me The Breeze and Gimme Three Steps
