      Brad is a good guy and this is great for people on a budget, myself included. Most (not all) of my musical gear is vintage 70's and 80's, (a few MIJ Fenders) Marshalls, Peaveys, Carvin, vintage and boutique pedals, some Chinese, and I also have have a ton of overseas-made things that I Iove and cherish, figures, models, electric trains, collectables, ect... but many of us strongly feel that we've all been feeding into a much bigger problem. This new normal is not a good thing at all and I don't see an easy fix other that we all just get by on less stuff, even if it means paying more for US-made or used, and this price-gouging pre-owned and OOP products is another problem that has to be stopped. When our generation is gone, it will all be worthless. Greed.

      @TheGuitologist maybe 1-2 years ago on a tube amp repair video. You were talking about components, and you tell us not to buy Chinese products. You mentioned lower quality but mostly how it props up the Chinese communist government and slights US manufacturers

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  5 місяців тому

      Sure, if you have an option to buy either a USA made Silverface Fender from the 70s that's hand wired for under $1000, and you're spending more than that on some modern SMD PCB Chinese POS, then you're foolish. I still believe that. But tell me where I said "never buy anything Chinese made". Pretty sure I didn't. We're talking about a mixer here. you cannot buy an equivalent USA made mixer, dude. They don't make hand made mixers anywhere NEAR this price point, and the ones that are made are exceptionally rare and aren't a viable production option for 99.99% of people with project studios. The mics...sure there are options which are not Chinese made, and I'm not discouraging anyone from going that route. Just saying my experience with this set of mics is a good experience. I think the demo proves that they're worth the $74. @@contrabandjoe7974

    I bought some stuff, including two gig bags that were advertised as having 1/2" padding. The thing was barely 1/2" thick overall, folded twice in its envelope. Basically it was a garbage bag with a strap. (Not the two backpack straps promised, but hey, it's hard to bond stuff to a garbage bag.) Literally not one thing in the ad was correct, unless one counts that technically they never claimed it wouldn't stink. They did return my money though. (Weird that they didn't even want the "gig bags" back.) Haven't tried the pedal power supply or tuner pedal buck both were incredibly light and flimsy. What I get for violating my own rule about buying stuff made in China, but at least I was buying from Chinese sellers, not American sellers that betrayed their American workers. I'll not be trying Temu again.

    Not bad for a basic drum mic setup.
    Brad, for how small your space is, you could try using something like ORTF or X/Y for the overheads. It will help fill in the center image of the drums a bit more. You should also put a towel or something in the kick drum up against the reso head. The decay on that thing was killing me. 😅
    This was definitely interesting to watch though. Cheers.

    • @stunix_uk
      @stunix_uk 5 місяців тому

      @TheGuitologist : Well, with the substituted '102050' 1000mAh cells the price is about $5 each. The primary benefit is that i can now walk around the house like Michael Jackson in the Billy Jean video without touching light switches. i think it is undoubtedly cheaper than using mains lighting from a consumption perspective, less conversion losses for a start, but i will have to do further research, measurement & math. in the future i may link some up to some small solar cells to charge via some enamelled wire or fairy lights. Maybe these "Chinglish" stores are probably a strategy to purposefully fill the west with useless tat before the battle ahead. ;)
      Thankyou for the entertaining content over the years with hopefully many more to come. @TheGuitologist

    Bass drum tone sounds good, could snare be a little crisper? and after you record, you can add a touch of echo to the snare. There is still a little ring to the toms that may need another peice of tape? Sometimes condenser Mics work great on snares.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  5 місяців тому +1

      I've been continuing to dial them in since recording the demo. Added a bit of EQ in the upper mids for the snare and tweaked the positions of the overheads a bit. But essentially, this is a good starting point.

It's basically like Ali Express, lot's of good stuff if you know how to sift through the garbage. If you put David Lee Roth's face on the microphone chick, it would look just like a kickass airbrush my buddy did of him back in the 80's, gave me a good memories chuckle!

    A share of the money we pay for chinese goods, goes to the chinese military. China is not a democratic state, the same way we are in the EU and US of A. So we do not know if China will use their militaire against us! Like China has taken over Hong Kong, they used to have democracy, but Chinese authorities removed people who wanted to continue democracy the western way. Buy Chinese goods and close factories in US of A, and in EU! China has a big surplus in trade with the EU, and I believe also in trade with US of A. AFAIK nice stuff like Apples products are made in China. So if you believe in living in a democratic world, you should place your orders in the democratic world - when possible. And tell the producers to produce in free contries.

    I had a Shure bass drum instrument mic in the 90s that cost 160. I traded a DW double bass pedal to a music store for it, some cables, and 30 pairs of sticks. Of course it was stolen like all my Shure mics. We played an event for Jerry`s Kids and even set up the huge stage and a church group stole all my mics on Sunday morning the next day. We camped at the outdoor show to break down the stage.

    I am glad you have returned to making guitar (somewhat) videos. As a review video the soft focus green screen processed video did little to help the viewer evaluate the products. Cables are down to the connectors, the quality of wire used, and how the wire is attached, so some detail there would be appreciated. Are they a use until fail product, a consumable? The rest of the video was a drum video. Nothing against drums, but came for the guitars, a separate channel, perhaps.
    Temu, though is interesting, I have used several Chinese apps for purchasing guitars, & guitar related goods. These companies are not about goods, but banking. The intent is to hold your money as long as possible. Keep it from you and the seller. They escrow the money in their bank. You pay, Ali-booby keeps your money. You receive a fake tracking number. Ali-booby holds the money despite the fraud, until "delivered." You made them aware of the fraud a month ago. You file a claim, they still have the money in their bank, and investigate for another month. After 3 months, you are told you will get a refund in a few weeks. 3 months without your money or product. Worse if the seller advises, there will be a delay in shipping. At one time I had $2000 in limbo at Ali-booby, with absolute proof of nondelivery, but they play the game to keep the money in their bank. They make their money on slow delivery or nondelivery, thats where the big bucks are. So Temu might be OK for a bunch of cheap stuff to resell on eBay, but it's not worth the other hassles. And to wait months just to start over on the same site with a different vendor. I did find Ali-boobys search by photo very helpful. A feature that Amazon should incorporate.

North American guitars. Their are Chinese microbrand automatic watches that participate on forums asking watch buyers' preferences and adjusting their various models from gleaned feedback. The more I return positive feedback (where earned) the more they appreciate freemarket capitalism .... hence losing their taste for the state.

    Hey bro unrelated but I thought I'd tell u. I worked on a Joyo Mjolnir a while back, did a few tweaks but kinda just peeled out in reverse. Then I watched an old video of yours about an EL84 amp hoping for basically anything. At some point u mentioned increasing input resistance from like 1 to 3 meg (I think) and the resulting tonal change. Well I tried the same. 1 to 2meg made me "ohh" 2 to 3 made me "wow!" then 3 to 4 made my fuckin jaw drop! This "metal" marketed amp was ok but needed something to slam the front end and even then it was so so. After this resistance mod it became a fire breathing chainsaw that was legit worthy of being labeled a real metal amp. I'm talking night and day. The reason for this long boring story is to ask your opinion. Why didn't they do this off the bat? I realize it may appeal to a wider scope just like a stock jcm800 might but this things specifically aimed at the metal crowd. It's actually a good head, no SMT crap and truly decent components, like metal films and Wima caps (crap soldering as expected though) I'm confident in saying this amps better than ANYTHING similarly priced with said mod. Whatta u say? And if u think I'm talking out my ass (talks cheaper than onions right?)then get your hands on one. The result may shock u

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for the tip, Dale. Many companies design amps for long term stability of the circuit to prevent problems with certain tubes. That’s my guess why they might not design in the resistance you mentioned.

    im a sound tech and those drum mics sounded killer, amy winehouses drummer only recorded back to black with one mic pointed at the kick and snare etc, so a couple of mics can sound good, but once you got kick, snare top and bottom, tom 1, tom 2, floor tom and overheads you cant go wrong for really any price TBH

    • @BluesSky
      @BluesSky 5 місяців тому

      Bruce Swedien technique, one ribbon pointed at the kit in front, used on a lot of Michael Jackson recordings. Sometimes he used an overhead pointed at the kit from the drummers perspective. RCA or Royer ribbons usually. LDC or even a 58 works though.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  5 місяців тому +1

      I did get some successful recording tones with a single Shure 565 pointed at the snare from just above the bass drum. And then I mixed in a little bit of my AT4040 in the room about 4 feet in front of the kit, capturing more crispness in the cymbals and top end attack...not bad at all. But it was missing a bit of punch in the bass and missing some of the balance I wanted in the toms, not to mention stereo ability with the tom mics and overheads.
