      If you plan to completely remove the finish on the back of the neck, and if the wood isn't treated like some sort of "roasted maple", then you need to apply a finish which is more "natural" to your taste, but leaving the neck unfinished could result in compromising the neck in the long run (cycles of sucking moisture then drying, and again).
      Now if you're really a fan of unfinished maple necks, then have them built out of roasted maple, and you won't have to worry about finishes ever again.
      I have a "part Strat" with a roasted maple neck from Warmoth, and after years of intensive use I can pretty much say that it's "bullet-proof".

      @moonboogien8908 6 місяців тому

      @@TheWorstManOnEarthhe explained this..... and as someone who builds, repairs and loves guitars, you can absolutely leave raw maple unfinished.
      He's right that hand oils will be absorbed over time, making the wood more moisture proof, even though wood will expand and contract even with a poly (or even nitro!) Finish.
      Personally though, I like teak oil on necks.... feels raw, and still protects the wood.

    I have used BLO (boiled linseed oil) on my guitar necks for 25 years. We used it mixed with mineral spirits to seal tile grout years ago. It works great on wood as well. It has darkened the wood slightly over the years. It make the grain really pop, and water runs off it like it's waxed.

    If you don’t like a sticky clear finish, as some call it, before you remove all of the finish and expose the neck to moisture possibly, use ultra fine sand paper, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit and take the gloss off the clear coat, try it first before more extreme steps. Feels better to me than raw wood.

    Since I owned an Ovation Breadwinner in the 80's I've been a fan of rough textured finishes on a body. Unless I have an amazing wood with crazy grain, I refinish most guitars with pickup bed liner. Later found a product sold by Parts Express used to finish amp and speaker cabs that works equally well.

    You can avoid those stress cracks by just picking the guitar up at the neck heel instead of the neck itself. I have 4 Ibanez RGs that are also prone to those types of stress cracks, since they all have basswood bodies, but none of them have it because I pick them up at the heel. You are totally right, though. These cracks are usually just finish cracks and not relevant in terms of structural integrity of the instrument.
    I like what Zio guitars did with the skunk stripe design. Looks pretty cool. And the maple just looks *chefs kiss*

    Brilliant. Some of those bell tones, whistles, not quite sure how to refer to them but reminding me of Rory Gallaghers Strat sound. The Epiphone amp sounds a perfect pairing. I like what you did to the neck to get rid of the sticky feel. Could you also use that technique on the fret board? Carvin Allen Holdsworth model, bare Alder (including top) to my spec, (97?) un finished ….no finish at all on neck or body, neck feels like a guitar with satin finish neck. It’s sold with Tung oil finish, & every few years I re apply it to the whole guitar, Single PU, with the Wilkerson trem. Wish I hadn’t been into that look, back then, because now I mostly play neck PU
    I recently put a Seymour Duncan Parallel Axis, with the switch’s like yours into that guitar.
    So at least it has 3 sounds now, mostly I use series, but I like coils in parallel too, same sustain, just a tiny bit lower output, and a little brighter🙂. Glad your not precious with it…🤣clank, you are the same with the amps! We like it!!!, but you got skills😳. I’ll do my own wiring, sure, but no sandpaper or router for me, although I did once …my first electric guitar I bought it in pieces from a HS friend a Fender Musicmaster he put the neck on a different body! I sanded the neck….& never did refinish it, painted the body white, because I was into Jimi then

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  6 місяців тому +1

      From simple humidity in the air...not likely at all. What might be more likely to happen would be it drying out too fast in arid environments. But pretty much any oil will help hold moisture in, including your hand oils, beeswax, etc. Some people suggest tung oil, tru-oil, gun oil, etc.

    I think what you want is a satin finish. Satin finishes help keep the wood stable. Bare wood goes through changes in humidity. If it was me, I would not do dusty jobs on my electronic bench even though you’re vacuuming later.

    I recommend buying several toy Slinky's and put them in a hydraulic press to squeeze the oil out of the metal.
    This oil applied to a bare guitar neck makes them Slinky smooth.

      Theoretically, cheeseburger grease is a good guitar neck finish.

    I'm the same with finish on necks! I bought a brand new Gibson SG today, and the first thing I did was set up, strings, and wet sand the finish to more of a satin feel! It was cringe when you went after the wood grain the wrong direction on the body cavity! You should have used your drimel!

    I would’ve done the dremel. But removing the finish neck with a light 400 grit sanding, medium 800 grit, and light 2000 grit sanding was the best decision of my life.

    The sticky guitar neck thing has never been a problem for me, as I have extremely dry skin, I think it is probably more of a problem if you have oily skin or sweaty hands. I've known guitar players who have used talcum power, or something similar to avoid the sticky neck problem.

    How do you get 9-42's to stay in tune, especially if you are playing hard? or do they go out of tune and you have to tune up often?

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  6 місяців тому +1

      Stretch them good when you first put them on. They stay in tune pretty good for me. Depends on other factors like the slippage over your nut and saddle, scale length, number of windings around your tuning post, how orderly your windings are around that post, neck stability, tailpiece stability, etc. All this before you even get into the quality of the tuners. If you're using a scale length that's too short for these strings, they might tend to flop out of tune more often because they're slipping microscopically back and forth across the nut and saddles. I only use 9s on Fender scale lengths, not Gibson.

    What radius is the neck? That will determine what bridge radius you should use.

People don't get it but I usually tell them to shut the f---k up ! I love my guitars but I want them a certain way that works for me . If it's good enough for Eddy Van Halen than its good enough for me . 12:58 Brad , I use Howard's feed and wax on mine to help the wood .

    You werent serious about the animal fat, were you? I had used an organic based oil on a cutting board once and it began developing spores and became rancid. Lesson learned, do not use animal products on wood. Use a food grade oil or boiled linseed oil(BLO), but very sparingly. Hope that helps someone.

      I have used BLO on my guitar necks for 25 years. We used it mixed with mineral spirits to seal tile grout years ago. It works great on wood. It has darkened the wood slightly over the years. It make the grain really pop, and water runs off it like it's waxed.

    • @Jethlin2020
      @Jethlin2020 6 місяців тому

      @cantyouhearmeknocking1961 yes, I use it on rifle stocks and over time BLO does darken when exposed to sunlight or even on its own. I think the key is to pick the amount you think you need and then use 10x less. Just my opinion.

    • @Jethlin2020
      @Jethlin2020 6 місяців тому

      @@Jethlin2020 Man, I love the way it darkened it, and it's so slick & smooth! It was jet black anyway before I sanded the paint off, so the slightly darkened Mahogany looks awesome. I actually mix a tiny bit of mineral spirits to thin it a little. I do it maybe once a year.
