Why sausage grease? Why not lemon oil or boiled linseed oil? Is animal grease supposed to be superior for guitar necks or is that a Louisville thing?
I feel like lard has gotten a bad rap. Reparations. @@skullheadwater9839
If you plan to completely remove the finish on the back of the neck, and if the wood isn't treated like some sort of "roasted maple", then you need to apply a finish which is more "natural" to your taste, but leaving the neck unfinished could result in compromising the neck in the long run (cycles of sucking moisture then drying, and again).
Now if you're really a fan of unfinished maple necks, then have them built out of roasted maple, and you won't have to worry about finishes ever again.
I have a "part Strat" with a roasted maple neck from Warmoth, and after years of intensive use I can pretty much say that it's "bullet-proof".
@@TheWorstManOnEarthhe explained this..... and as someone who builds, repairs and loves guitars, you can absolutely leave raw maple unfinished.
He's right that hand oils will be absorbed over time, making the wood more moisture proof, even though wood will expand and contract even with a poly (or even nitro!) Finish.
Personally though, I like teak oil on necks.... feels raw, and still protects the wood.

Well, it's only valid if it's your main guitar and you play it all the time (and you have greasy hands).
its been a minute since i've seen some vintage guitologist content! i've missed it! thank you very much for posting this brad!
thanks for watching!
Hey man. I remember you had 124,000 Subs before the issue and many dropped out. Now you are surging beyond. Awesome.
..you put animal fat on that, you better keep it outa reach of your Dog. 🤷 🐕
Ok...sausage grease to seal the neck...that's a new one on me......therefore I dubb it the 'Sausagecaster'....now I need me some breakfast. Happy Holidays Brad..Cheers!
You gotta say something controversial in all these youTube vids these days for the kids in the Gear forums.
I just took the finish off my nexk last week (shecter) i used scotchbrite cranberry colored and thats all i needed came out perfect for me. Also love the green screen without anything layered just green lol
man you got that valve jr dialed in sounding great .
"Every little scar...I'll be proud of it", good man.
Great looking Guitar, love the sound and look of those pick-ups, and the tremolo sounds smooth as butter
You can even get Floyd type flutter with this vibrato.
Hey man, couldn’t agree with you more about what you did with the neck. I’ve done that trick myself a few times and I have to tell you I love to watch you play I could watch you all day long. Love your style.
Thanks Dean.
@@TheGuitologist you’re welcome my man you’re a pleasure to watch, and I tried to learn as much as I can from you about amplification I would love to jam with you. Any time you’re in New Jersey look me up 😎
My favorite guitar, my 06 white gibson flying v, has cigarette burns, chips, finish cracks, all of it. Thats cause i USED IT HARD. Dragged that thing to so many gigs, across the country a couple times. But it still has the mojo.
I had a "unfinished" strat neck for 30 years and I love it. Got an PRS with satin finished neck - also great (and protected). I did a satin finished treat to my Epiphone dot 335 with wet sandpaper grit 1000.
A green 3M scrubbing pad works for me, makes it feel satin like with ease...no sticky gloss...thanks Brad
Good job Brad, may order one of those one of these days. I really dig the shape
The office clip was perfect. Thats how it feels tho when you have to do some surgery. But sometimes ya just gotta jump in there.
I have used BLO (boiled linseed oil) on my guitar necks for 25 years. We used it mixed with mineral spirits to seal tile grout years ago. It works great on wood as well. It has darkened the wood slightly over the years. It make the grain really pop, and water runs off it like it's waxed.
That's a badass guitar Brad! I'm a builder too (like the other 50,000 on UA-cam) so I dig checking out other guy's builds, he did a great job on that one! I think my favorite thing he did is the maple skunks tripe inside the walnut or rosewood skunks tripe, that U shape at the end of the darker stripe is sick! That guitar definitely suits you no doubt! Hope you and your family have a great Christmas, keep up the great work!
The Appalachian feel to the music in this video is very kino! Thank you Brad 👍
I sanded the back of my 79' LP Custom neck. It was still pretty gloss black when I got it. Sweat a little, and it was sticky as crap. I did the same thing, but I of course couldn't remove the neck. Lots of taping and extremely careful sanding. It plays like a dream ever since.
Beautiful guitar and sound, great playing as well!
Dig the trem dude. Nice. Cleans are beautiful
Great video! Wish Erine Ball had their strings like that in bulk.
I saw this guy take a fresh onion cut it in half and rubbed it all over a unfinished neck and watch grain pop out in a way ive never seen before i was told it was a chemical reaction ..its effects were clear and quick..
im getting my amp out,, and the sandpaper. nice one Brad sounding amazing as per.
I cant believe it stayed in tuune you thashed it man! What a beaute!
That's pretty unique tone, Brad !
I love those pickups! I had a Godin with one in the neck but I would really like to find a guitar to put a couple in.
It's on the bench... I hope he brings it up slowly on the Variac ! LoL. But seriously, a very nice guitar. We can hear your pride when you talk about it and when you play it. ROCK-ON. 🤘
Because you play a lot those ideas will seep into the mind,
the compulsion to make necessary changes until it
sits right has so many rewards, even if it means using
a mallet and chisel, albeit very skilfully, heck i bought a
Vintage statesboro parlour ,just to mod the headstock
into a slotted (martin type) and its beautiful now 😇
really enjoyed this brad, thanx
In my experience, the chisel works better the flipped around other way, you are able to control it more.
If you don’t like a sticky clear finish, as some call it, before you remove all of the finish and expose the neck to moisture possibly, use ultra fine sand paper, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit and take the gloss off the clear coat, try it first before more extreme steps. Feels better to me than raw wood.
Good to see you Brad.
Saw you!🙂 That’s cool, because you can chose which coil you hear all by itself. Or put them in series or parallel with each other 4 sounds actually per PU
It actually IS a soap bar!
60 cycle & all. That trem is also very cool, you can use it like finger vibrato 😀
It's been awhile seeing you I hope everything is going good for you and have good Christmas God bless you
the cut when you dropped the vacuum "GOD#$%^%$!!!" had me rolling for some reason.. I can relate to the feeling.
the Universe enjoys goading me for some reason. It's an ongoing dispute.
Way to go Brad! Whatever works for the best. Somehow, in order to transcend the instrument, you need first to de-mystify it ! Great neck!
Take care!
Yep thats the sound 👍
Sounds killer man
Awesome
Thanks dude!
You might want to try a few coats of shellac, on that neck. I put some on a mahogany neck and hit it with 1200 grit sandpaper after and it feels great too.
Man, ..that's one Baad Jag! 🔥👍
God Damn its good to see ya Brad!... I knew it was gonna be great as soon as the chisel came out!
A fellow Brad here , its freaking sick looking , great video
Hey, thanks!
Nice Descendent bridge and vibrato. All I use now but that vibrato type is known to break strings right at the ball end
Yep. Already had some experience with that.
That is a beautiful guitar! LOL while I watched I was strumming my Fender Strat, I have a see thru sapphire blue strait with the Gilmour mod! Well it's a push button but it does the same thing David Gilmour had on his guitar! Either way I haven't commented in a while Brad always fun watching you do this stuff! I watched that Fender twin thing! I did get mine repaired finally there is a good based guy here in Detroit area I took it too! It was just a known issue with the reissues. Either way that guitar still sounds sick!
Oh damn I didn't record any video but I fixed one of those Epi Jr cabs! My friend gave me, he kicked it out on stage, I took the broken speaker out and put a Celestion g12h 70th anniversary in and put oxblood grill cloth on!
Awe man. Quit it Brad. Making me laugh. "Sausage on your neck". Lol Just funny . Always enjoy watching. I needed that. Thanks
Love that guitar! You rock 🤟
the way he did the skunk stripes are very cool
awesome Guitar and awesome Video
Thanks!
Welcome!
Very cool!
Great playing man that’s the best sounding valve jr I ever 👂
Glad you like it! This one isn't even modded yet!
the tone is in the hands
Ole sausage fingers.
Who knows, they might end up developing a cult following, just because of how many people have used them at some point
Aha! STICKY neck huh? I was wondering wtf you were sanding it for? Now I get it! Diggin out for the trem bar I understood! 😃👍
Since I owned an Ovation Breadwinner in the 80's I've been a fan of rough textured finishes on a body. Unless I have an amazing wood with crazy grain, I refinish most guitars with pickup bed liner. Later found a product sold by Parts Express used to finish amp and speaker cabs that works equally well.
You can avoid those stress cracks by just picking the guitar up at the neck heel instead of the neck itself. I have 4 Ibanez RGs that are also prone to those types of stress cracks, since they all have basswood bodies, but none of them have it because I pick them up at the heel. You are totally right, though. These cracks are usually just finish cracks and not relevant in terms of structural integrity of the instrument.
I like what Zio guitars did with the skunk stripe design. Looks pretty cool. And the maple just looks *chefs kiss*
Brilliant. Some of those bell tones, whistles, not quite sure how to refer to them but reminding me of Rory Gallaghers Strat sound. The Epiphone amp sounds a perfect pairing. I like what you did to the neck to get rid of the sticky feel. Could you also use that technique on the fret board? I have a Cort Srat with a lacquered neck and fret/finger board, which needs a re-fret. Would it be ok to remove the lacquer from both sides? your thoughts please.
Now would be the time to do it while you're refretting anyway. It's now or never.
That is an Awesome guitar. Niece chisel work.
Wow that guitar sounds great, but when you went to the cleaner sound
23:40 it just leaped out of my speaker. Nice video thanks for sharing.
Sausage grease lol ok I've never heard of that before. Well not on purpose anyways but whatever works for you.
Meaty tones and a solid repair video
Nobody: Hey Brad, how's the play on that neck?
Brad: Like greased lightning.
That's a fkng cool axe. I'm going to do a guitar based around those P-Rails soon.
My bucket list guitar
I’m gonna put my signature onto all my guitars and I’ll have about 30 signature guitars . Might as well do my pedals and amps and picks while I’m at it!
Hi Brad!
Is the Amp and the speaker stock?
Killer sound btw,
Cheers!
Love your name on there. Wish i could afford it
Sure do miss you videos.
That little Epi amp sounds good.
I have been moding and painting some of my guitars lately too
Make it yours, man.
Blows my mind that Fender hasn’t released a Meteora with this bridge. I’m in the process of building two a LOT like this one for my daughter (in shell pink with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and tempered pine body and a reverse jaguar headstock) and another that is more akin to a jazzmaster for me.
18:00 - does the descendent bridge "rock" like a fender jazzmaster/jaguar type?
"I was playing exceptionally hard"...dude really?...nobody likes a braggart bro! OH! BOOM!
Man I dig that axe!! I'ma check them out!
Jack ~'()'~
Carvin Allen Holdsworth model, bare Alder (including top) to my spec, (97?) un finished ….no finish at all on neck or body, neck feels like a guitar with satin finish neck. It’s sold with Tung oil finish, & every few years I re apply it to the whole guitar, Single PU, with the Wilkerson trem. Wish I hadn’t been into that look, back then, because now I mostly play neck PU
I recently put a Seymour Duncan Parallel Axis, with the switch’s like yours into that guitar.
So at least it has 3 sounds now, mostly I use series, but I like coils in parallel too, same sustain, just a tiny bit lower output, and a little brighter🙂. Glad your not precious with it…🤣clank, you are the same with the amps! We like it!!!, but you got skills😳. I’ll do my own wiring, sure, but no sandpaper or router for me, although I did once …my first electric guitar I bought it in pieces from a HS friend a Fender Musicmaster he put the neck on a different body! I sanded the neck….& never did refinish it, painted the body white, because I was into Jimi then
going for the "natural oil" finish eh? LOL If you want a smooth friction free neck without animal oil, which will degrade and become rancid with time, a better choice would be Renaissance Wax ;)
Quick question. Does this make your neck more susceptible to warping over time based on moisture absorption?
From simple humidity in the air...not likely at all. What might be more likely to happen would be it drying out too fast in arid environments. But pretty much any oil will help hold moisture in, including your hand oils, beeswax, etc. Some people suggest tung oil, tru-oil, gun oil, etc.
Dude this is pretty nice guitar! there I think a Dremel would have been a little easier though... and hey what's with the purple fingers?!?! You pull a fire alarm? 😅
Okay i love the amp videos but this has my attention
I've found that Neese's Sausage is the best tone sausage available.
Neese's Sausage will bring out prominent high frequencies as well as haunting mids in your guitar's tone.
Neese's Sausage for all your guitar tone needs.
Could you use pure lanolin oil on necks ???
I think what you want is a satin finish. Satin finishes help keep the wood stable. Bare wood goes through changes in humidity. If it was me, I would not do dusty jobs on my electronic bench even though you’re vacuuming later.
Here in Chicaago, we use saaausage grease. Lolz
way to go!!!!!!!!!!!
I recommend buying several toy Slinky's and put them in a hydraulic press to squeeze the oil out of the metal.
This oil applied to a bare guitar neck makes them Slinky smooth.
I hope this comment is serious.
Theoretically, cheeseburger grease is a good guitar neck finish.
bacon fat.....nothing else
I'm the same with finish on necks! I bought a brand new Gibson SG today, and the first thing I did was set up, strings, and wet sand the finish to more of a satin feel! It was cringe when you went after the wood grain the wrong direction on the body cavity! You should have used your drimel!
Started the play back at 1.5 speed, when watching the guitar jam I forgot it was at 1.5 speed. Man I thought your where on coke. Played back At normal speed, man that was awesome, tasty
I would’ve done the dremel. But removing the finish neck with a light 400 grit sanding, medium 800 grit, and light 2000 grit sanding was the best decision of my life.
The sticky guitar neck thing has never been a problem for me, as I have extremely dry skin, I think it is probably more of a problem if you have oily skin or sweaty hands. I've known guitar players who have used talcum power, or something similar to avoid the sticky neck problem.
Thats good gitallrgying licks .id say scorching with tonal highlites.
I watched your playing at the end at 0.25 speed which was quite trippy almost scary. Then I cranked it up to 1.75 speed and melted my face.
How do you get 9-42's to stay in tune, especially if you are playing hard? or do they go out of tune and you have to tune up often?
Stretch them good when you first put them on. They stay in tune pretty good for me. Depends on other factors like the slippage over your nut and saddle, scale length, number of windings around your tuning post, how orderly your windings are around that post, neck stability, tailpiece stability, etc. All this before you even get into the quality of the tuners. If you're using a scale length that's too short for these strings, they might tend to flop out of tune more often because they're slipping microscopically back and forth across the nut and saddles. I only use 9s on Fender scale lengths, not Gibson.
17:30 that’s what she said.
Seems wierd 2 me Odd ,, i thought i already was a member but my hue 2ube experience has been a strained one and i suspect some obstacles,, that being said im glad and happy to support this channel..🇺🇸🧂🇺🇸
Man that is one dull chisel 😂 that guitar is sickkkkk!
im lucky my 1963 and 1964 jaguars dont have any finish or wood cracks near the neck pocket and being i was a junky for a decade i sold all my vintage cases to buy smack. so i have gigged with my jags for 20 years with no case and being very hard on them. my american ri jag had them but i used to kick and throw that guitar across stage haha
What radius is the neck? That will determine what bridge radius you should use.
9.5"
Same radius as bridge.
@@TheGuitologist Yeah I misunderstood what you were doing. I thought you were putting a new bridge on. When you were talking about what you chose for a radius for the bridge, I was thinking well that is really determined by the neck. I understand now.
Oh God the chisel coming out.
Brad I have the same take on things it's mine , I don't tend to sell it etc, and every crack , ding makes it more mine that I know I put there. People don't get it but I usually tell them to shut the f---k up ! I love my guitars but I want them a certain way that works for me . If it's good enough for Eddy Van Halen than its good enough for me . 12:58 Brad , I use Howard's feed and wax on mine to help the wood .
No, no, NOOO!!!! Raman! RAMAN!!!!
I have three Fenders, one USA 2013 Strat, one MIM 2007 strat and a MIM 2015 Telecaster and none of them have developed neck pocket cracks. Just lucky I guess.
What was the mod?
Scooter kids
You werent serious about the animal fat, were you? I had used an organic based oil on a cutting board once and it began developing spores and became rancid. Lesson learned, do not use animal products on wood. Use a food grade oil or boiled linseed oil(BLO), but very sparingly. Hope that helps someone.
I was serious, but the grease won't stay on there long regardless. Probably wiped off on my hand first 5 minutes of play.
I have used BLO on my guitar necks for 25 years. We used it mixed with mineral spirits to seal tile grout years ago. It works great on wood. It has darkened the wood slightly over the years. It make the grain really pop, and water runs off it like it's waxed.
@cantyouhearmeknocking1961 yes, I use it on rifle stocks and over time BLO does darken when exposed to sunlight or even on its own. I think the key is to pick the amount you think you need and then use 10x less. Just my opinion.
@TheGuitologist very true...lol. I thought this was your method of choice and I had done the same thing until I tried it on that cutting board.
@@Jethlin2020 Man, I love the way it darkened it, and it's so slick & smooth! It was jet black anyway before I sanded the paint off, so the slightly darkened Mahogany looks awesome. I actually mix a tiny bit of mineral spirits to thin it a little. I do it maybe once a year.
What's the best sausage to use for this?
Tennessee Pride.
