Thank you Mr. O'Sullivan for one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Agreed ❤, I,ve made love to hundreds of women in my time, granted most of the time it was inside head and they came in the form of beautiful music like this ,many thanks Mr O ❤❤❤
Gilbert O'Sullivan is fantastic. A good gracious man that writes his own songs with his own love and talent and feeling in this world. The world is beautiful because of great human musicians/voices/writers/singers with love like Gilbert O'Sullivan
Yes-couldn’t have put it better!
The chord progression is beautiful.
"When I'm drinking my Bonaparte Shandy
Eating more than enough apple pies
Will I glance at my screen
And see real human beings
Starve to death right in front of my eyes"
PURE GENIUS. Thank you for the music you gave to us. Your early work was just so different and fitted the early 70's so well.
Amazing. Absolutely the same class as McCartney at his best. There is not enough recognition of the fantastic music of Gilbert O'Sullivan.
Seems even more powerful today. Prescient too. Masterpiece.
Probably the most underrated singer song writer of all time.. Gilbert is unbelievably talented and has to be up there with Lennon and Macca
Personally, I think Gilbert surpassed the works of McCartney but I totally agree with you. Criminally underrated but dearly loved by people who sees the special magic conveyed with his songs!
Amen to that! I'm a Norwegian 41 year old and obviously wasn't born when Gilbert ruled the world in the 70s but I discovered him in 1995, aged 15, thank to my father who DID experience Gilbertmania! Gilbert was especially big in Norway and Matrimony was actually a charttopper here in 1972!
@@j.c.s.1608 I don't understand a word of Spanish but I take it you love Gilbert OSullivan and that's a thumb up by me!
@@thomasmarthinussen8978 Thomas......, Gilbert is a wonderful artist. Un saludo desde Madrid.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written
This song takes right back instantly to the 70’s as a kid. Great memories, thank you Gilbert
One of The GREATEST ever Songs, but then you've written so MANY greatest Ever songs, Its mind boggling! I'll be here tomorrow :-D
I've just played your version back to back with this. Definitely one of your best (more serious) vocal and visual impressions, Stevie. ua-cam.com/video/YnIwYI3XHJQ/v-deo.html
Love this song.
It's just one of the finest songs ever written 'n recorded
Yes.
indeed
Gilbert O'Sullivan is such a unique artist and singer that we have never seen anything like his music ever.
I absolutely adore this man . . . Introduced to his music from my dear Mam when I was only three years old in 72, her funeral only six weeks ago. I’m 55 now, to be married (2nd time round) in Cyprus this year. Gilbert’s music is firmly on our playlist. Wow - What a gorgeous gorgeous man
One of the most unique songwriting talents ever. With simplistic lyrics that everyone can relate to.
Lyrical genius.
Indeed. Another lyrical genius, also with his compositions was the late great Clifford T. Ward.
This song came out when I was13, in school in England. It is one of the most potent songs of my life and when I hear it, I cry: I am 13 again and FULL of everything that is that age... all the confusion, loneliness, and longing.
I thank you for the miracle that IS music. THIS is one of the best pieces/songs... and part of the warp and weft of who I am. And YOU created it. That is some gift! Thank you.
A masterpiece. If it was a painting, it would surely hang in the Louvre. Along with a lot more of his songs in my opinion.
I can always relate to his songs and lyrics, as if he wrote them for me personally... Its as if he writes my very thoughts down and puts them to music 🎶. I think he's brilliant and I have every studio album he ever recorded. Seen him in concert 10 times now. I'll never forget the first time in 1994 with my dad, I was awestruck... Brilliant... Best wishes Gilbert 👍👏
He was a Genius, so many classic tracks that you remember every word of.such a unique sound.
I just LOVE his phrasing and plays on words.
The wistful vocal interpretation of the lyrics, that melancholy voice, the subject matter of the song, the ebbing and flowing of the melody and the wonderful string arrangement enveloping the piano makes this a timeless track. It will still be fabulous in another fifty years. Gilbert is quite self deprecating but his super talent is clear to see x
Yes I absolutely agree.
Well said sir. I love this song. I only found out about it today.
Gilbert's songs always had very meaningful lyrics for me.. Songs to sit back and close your eyes to while listen full plet with headphones x
finally we all get to know what the meaning behind this song. Mr. Ray!
A true master- Timeless classic-love Gilbert always! ❤️⭐️👏👏👏👏👏👏😘🥰🤗
Always loved this song and 'We Will.' Very fond memories of hearing these songs on the radio and then buying the first US release in 1972...and then Clair...Alone Again... What a run of amazing songs.
'We Will' nearly had me in tears once. My wife had recently died of cancer and I was putting my 7 yr old son to bed when it came on the radio (16yrs after it was in the charts.) I was choking back the tears and had to go back downstairs quickly, before he saw me. Powerful and unusual lyrics, whuch were so meaningful to me at that time.
I was seven years old, living in England in 1972, and I loved this song, as well as Gilbert's others. I also loved this image, and was probably one of the few who was sorry when he dropped this image.
🤯🤯🤯,We are so privileged and lucky to be living in the 21st century to actually be able to post uour comments on line,it literally blows my mind to to think that i was in infant school when this record came out,
One of my favourite all time songs.....AWESOME. An amazing talent
Brilliant. No one has the ability to write songs like this. In those days sure, John, Paul, George and a host of others. Gilbert was special.
The most underrated talented songwriter and singer!!! Here in the USA anyway!
I love this song. and even more meaningfull these days.
'Nothing gained, nothing still-born or lost' ...powerful lyric
My father, son of a Dutch farmer, loved this song!! Not any other popsong did at his time. And every year since he past away I play this vinyl single on my pick-up. Love you daddy!!
I've always been fascinated by this song. Here in Spain it never was a Hit, neither FM stuff but since the first time I heard it and got the impression it really was a very special song. After more than 50 years I still think the same. Thanks so much, Gilbert 🌟
Brilliant song and Brilliant Artist who we sadly don't hear enough of.
Amazing time travel footage of Gilbert looking back at himself fifty years ago unflinchingly, can't help but respect him and his music.
That was wonderful! Gilbert seems very humble - this song is without doubt his masterpiece!
Gilbert has so many songs to be proud of but Nothing Rhymed is probibly his best masterpiece. What a proper little bar in the east end near Tower Bridge.
I am wondering if this wonderful pub is still around. Magic right here.
What a brilliant wordsmith you are Mr. O’Sullivan. The music and the emphasis on certain words is lovely and your diction very clear. I always admired your work. Thank You x
Beautifully emotive and deeply profound lyrics. The composition/production is breathtaking. Genuinely nice and decent guy. Truly Memorable and Tear Enducing. Thanks Gilbert for your wonderful music and your super talented self.💜
Absolute magic. The lyrics, the chord progressions, the feeling in that one song. It blew me away as a young teenager when it hit the UK charts. :)
This song touched me in so very many ways. The most complex, enjoyable, yet painful song I've ever known. I'll be ever grateful, Mr. O'Sullivan.
hello Gilbert I love you're music and your songs in 1970s brilliant keep it up gilbert
Gilbert O'Sullivan is great. Thanks for still making me feel great about life and your beautiful music
Still makes me sad...realizing this is 50 years ago. But also...sweet memory.
Remember the sepia tinted album of older bros, sis, and old chap/dear,thought you were from 20's new york
Always listen to your stuff as a way of getting back to the heart of it all
Lovely
This is June 2024…Came here via UA-cam algorithm after watching the full song/video of Nothing Rhymed. First time hearing the song. Last night, my wife and I watched Alone Again (Naturally) on YT. I told my wife I remembered exactly where I was when I first heard AAN. I was a sophomore in high school, driving through our small town when the radio station in Nashville (just 20 minutes from that small town, Franklin). After listening, I was convinced it was Paul McCartney. I convinced my friends it was Paul McCartney. After discovering the truth I realized Gilbert clearly had his own style of writing and I guess I unknowingly at the time was paying a compliment as to how skilled his songwriting and performance is. Then Clair was played and I knew without hearing who the performer was…Gilbert. So many years later and access to a plethora of artists musical libraries lends itself to wonderful discoveries for the human soul. Thanks Gilbert, for being a part of our happy teenage memories. All the best.
To me, that image worked perfectly with the song. And he don't look bad for 74, does he? A really talanted musician and by all acounts a really nice bloke.
Good-Old -Days. '70's music were shining! 😍
I loved this song in 1970 when I was a teenager, my love of the song hasn't changed even now I am in my seventies, my goodness where did all the time go?. My wife used to frequent the Prospect of Whitby in the late 1960's as a college girl from south of the river and she and her friends had a fine ol' time there.
Such a wonderful view back together with Gilbert O'Sullivan on his legeendary NOTHING RHYMED song - congratulations after half a century ... lovely to listen to your comments, Mr O'Sullivan!
I thought that version of 'Nothing Rhymed'in this video was the best version of that number. Thanks for that Gilbert.
Can't mistake Gilbert, you know when I was fourteen my bedroom wall was plastered with his posters, Saturday night is you tube night to listen to Gilbert and all the memories his songs bring back of my early teens
What a great song and melody Gilbert hasn't made a bad song I love everyone he's ever made. My late mother's favourite was Claire
Your mom and I had something in common. "Clair" is my favorite too. I'm 73.
@@nuboyhere ditto on all counts - same age and favorite song.
As an aside, when I heard "Clair" shortly after my niece, Claire, was born, some thirty-plus years ago, I cried.
@@AlDunbar It's what happens when art touches the very core of yourself. It brings in a moment of happiness, but it also makes you cry, Al.
@@nuboyhere agreed. Somehow Gilbert manages to touch people with his special combination of lyrics and music.
The song has always been a masterpiece and the music video just oozes with class way ahead of its time.
😎👌
Heard Gilbert's big hit song "Alone Again, Naturally" the other day, for the first time in awhile. Always loved the song, but never knew much about the artist. Thanks to Google and UA-cam, I was able to get reacquainted with some of his great tunes, and am especially blown away by this one. The lyrics flow so wonderfully and really feel inspirational! Someone commented that Gilbert's songs make you feel happy and sad at the same time - and that's true. But mostly happy!
Such a wonderful narrative style in all of 'Gilberts' lyrics. The wonderful melodies seem like an immortal bonus. Thank you.
Actually Gilbert, when this came out I loved the image, and I was at the time heavily into The Beatles, Donovan, Pink Floyd etc., your image then was just so brilliant and as you say totally different from everyone else. Oh, and I heard it in Wales, so your wrong there, I'm sure loads of others loved your image then in Britain. Brilliant song.
Thank You Gilbert 👍😸🌹🎶 Back To Front Album Three Time. My Favorite 😆🎶🙏
Thanks Mr. Gilbert. You're an inspiration for a few young boys and girls.
You'll be in our hearts forever.
I remember seeing Gilbert on New Zealand television in 1971 performing this song which was obviously recorded in Britain. I was so taken with how uniquely he dressed, looked and sounded that instantly I know I wanted to hear more of his music. His musical legacy is all the more wonderful given his was a relatively brief flowering. A lot of people I knew thought "Oo-Wakka-Do-Wakka-Day" was the most irritating song of its day (1972?) But I simply loved it, playjng it repeatedly on my turntable, never tiring of its infectiousness. I'd guess for at least a few months back then I imagined I was Gilbert O'Sullivan and identified strongly with his 1920s boyish look. When he dropped that image, I was left feeling confused and I steadily lost interest in his music - but I tuned in again after he hit it big in the USA in 1972 with "Alone Again, Naturally", "Clare" and "Get Down". An amazingly original songwriter and performer.
Thank you for sharing your reactions. There was, and there still is, something truly magical going on here. It's heartening to know that you still feel it too. For me, it only gets deeper as I get older.
Ahhhhhhhh, sooooo lovely xxx
Didn't appreciate "Nothing Rhymed" when first released, as much as I should've had. Now one of my favourite songs! Great to see Gilbert's comments, 50 years on! Lyrically a masterpiece, and still sounds great today! The look will always be memorable!
Great singer and song writer...The songs will leave forever..
The Waterford mans young insights are just incredible. Poignant, lyrical but whimsical. Along with Alone again his finest. For some even better. His first hit. Some of those lines in the song are so show stoppingly brilliant. When I was 17 on hearing it for the first time, little did I know that I would come to regard it as a work of genius at the age of 70 as I am now.
What can I say, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
Ray, if you’re reading this, my wife and I saw you at the Tyne Theatre as my birthday treat on 8 Oct and you were great! I cried in the theatre when you played Claire and was pretty emotional at this too. You’ve still got it. Thank you Clive
Rediscovered this masters work. My father was a fan and there were songs I listened to as a boy . I'm now 47 and his lyrics in his song truly resonate. Gilbert was that a tear of emotion towards the end of this video? Well deserved you should be so proud of a you have achieved!
Stunning, Gilbert, what a talent you are. 💚
My mum loved you did you ever go to Brookvale australia. 1970.s my mum came home after shopping .Ive seen him shouting made her day xxx thank you
Xxxx
Gilbert that was such a incredible song I played and played and played it over and over again I’m 68 now but I remember when it came out, so spontaneous so inspirational I love that look, you are a genius….. born out of season
In 1970 I was only a toddler and lived in Wapping near where this film was made. I have lived in a few places as I grew up and I went back to another nearby pub called the Town of Ramsgate way back in 1991 and saw Suzie Quatro in there talking with a friend. We didn't hassle her in any way but she gave us a friendly smile as she walked past on a trip to the toilet.
Gorgeous song, superb vocal performance too.
You are one of three artists i put in a league of there own , Gilbert O ' Sullivan Kate Bush and Clifford T Ward RIP X . All your own work .
Remember boxing day 1970 early evening went out with my new yellow harvard minor little radio in my pocket .went to my freinds homes ...nobody coming out to play . So returned home . This song was playing on radio . I've loved it ever since . Gilbert is a genius and a good bloke.
superb song goosebumps!
Hes a lovely man,one of our most talented songwriters,i think he certainly was very different at the time and thats why we remember him,hes unique.i love his melodies and lyrics. From the uploaded videos on youtube seems much respected by a younger generation of artists! He evokes many happy memories from my childhood in the 70s!!!
This song is in my all time top 20..... such a magnificent lyricist and musician!
Thoughtful lyrics that rose way above the ordinary...and that image...the cutoff sleeves...the haircut. To me (non Irish, non- UK), that is a derelict, wandered into a pub, sat down, and belt out a genius composition. Great angle!!!
I loved you way back when, your songs made me happy made me cry and answered all my emotions at that time. Now aged 66 I still return to your music. Lyrically you are a genius and I loved the melodies.
It must give you great pleasure to go back and watch what you have achieved.Thankyou.
My favourite song. The emotion and passion comes across in an honest way. Love it
I really adore you Mr. Ray!!!
Ray (Gilbert) You're an absolute Gent ! Always loved your music , As You moved to the UK as a kid, I moved my family ( Wife and 4 little boys)to Ireland and have been here 32 years, My eldest was 8 and the youngest 8 months when we moved, We had Our only Irish baby Girl here , all of our kids grew up listening to your music
Happy to see Gilbert reminiscence over the music video after so many years. Great song and good analysis.
Masterpiece.
I love hearing all this from the man himself. He has such a unique voice and suchincredible talent also for writing songs. i love to hear about the story behind the music.
Utterly brilliant words
This 'look-back' reaction video, from the actual artist who did it is brilliant. Of course the song is a classic. 👏👏👏
Genio. Saludos desde Argentina.
This songwriting is brilliant. May I say, daring to be different is being yourself.
Love you just as much as I did 50 years ago xx
Gilbert's finest ever song ...period. Still so relevant and even so perspicacious today.
In those time i lived in USSR and this singer even here was very popular. And his songs sound on radio.
Fantastic song, great restoration, let's hope you'll continue with some more of those old films :-)
Gilbert I hope you read this,The words in this song are so incredibly touching,it seems the words fit a myriad of life’s trials and tribulations……when it first came out it touched me deeply on the lyrical value alone, apart from it being a lovely melodic song, anyway it means as much to me today as it did now over 50yrs ago……THANKYOU.
Thanks for giving so many people the pleasure of hearing your wonderful songs over the years, Gilbert. You're still writing brilliant songs but this one really is special. I don't know why but my favourite line is And this pleasure I get from say winning a bet is to lose.
Loved that song then and still do. he feels like an old mate whos always there for me. love to all xx
Possibly my favourite song ever❤❤❤
Pure genius, Gilbert,
i too fell in love with your image back then.
Outstanding timeless song thankyou gilbert
