I went to see Gilbert in concert in Manchester on Sunday 9th October 2022 Still as brilliant as I remember him. A real treat with songs and stories about his life. May he continue for many a year👍👍👍👍
I still love his music. I hope he’s still writing music and has a beautiful life, because he deserves it. All his music deserves to be played, forever. Thank you.
So glad he DIDN'T climb that tower and jump off, a lesson to us all to hang in there. I grew up, well I got older ha. Still love listening to all the turns of yesterday.
Gilbert writes wonderful songs, beautiful melodies, witty or poetic lyrics, releases new albums, tours in Ireland, UK, US, Japan, Netherlands, Israel, Belgium, Norway, Denmark and Europe, and lives on Jersey enjoying the countryside and his family and grandchildren. 🎶🌎💖🍀
My school friend we are 65 now. Went to see him a few weeks ago in Manchester uk. Unfortunately I live in USA for 37 years now. I loved all his songs in the 70’s. My friend said the concert was fabulous everyone was singing along. ❤️
I was 13 in 1971, visiting my sister when I first heard "Alone Again Naturally" I'm 66 now and I still listen to the song ❤❤ My all time favorite song to sing around the house and at karaoke!!! I know all of the words by heart!!! I have several of his CDs and listen to them often!!! I love Gilbert O'Sullivan ❤
Thank you for this great update into one of my favourite songsmith's. Gilbert was a breath of fresh air to music at the time and his songs were so well received. Very pleased he is still OK and performing.
I agree with you 100%. His songs were mind blowing, i remember watching him on totp for the 1st time. He was so unique & his style of dressing was so unusual & so Cool❤️
I was a disc jockey back in 1972 and I remember we played the snot out of "Alone Again" and then "Clair." I was not a fan, but we were never allowed to share a negative opinion about a song we were playing. Then in 1973, I was finally promoted from overnights to the night shift 7 - Midnight. My very first shift also happened to be the very first night shift for Wolfman Jack at WNBC in New York. I was working on the CT shoreline and WNBC came into our market like a local. Now here comes the weird part; both Wolfman Jack and myself started our shows at the very same time 7:06 as we both ran network news AND we both started our shows with the exact same song, "Get Down" by Gilbert O'Sullivan.
I’ve seen him play live twice - both were great concerts - I’d thoroughly recommend anyone with even a passing interest in GIlbert’s music to catch one his concerts!
I first heard Gilbert on the radio, in the late sixties singing "Gaily underneath the blanket go" and have been a fan ever since. He wrote some classics including Nothing Rhymed, probably my all time favourite track, but so many great songs. Still listening to him 48 years later.
I was watching 'Moving' the wonderful Korean drama and was delighted to hear his song 'Alone Again' being used, it was such a surprise but it fitted in perfectly. I saw O'Sullivan at Batley Variety Club in the 70s and still have one of his early LPs.
It is not a "difficult" industry. It is simply a situation where one group of people acting as gatekeepers, managers, and promoters, profit off of the artistic labors of another group of people. Edit: But thanks to people like Oliver Anthony that situation is changing.
I'm pleased to say that I attended his concert in Basingstoke (Southern England) on May 11th 2022 (a duet with Gilbert on piano and an excellent guitarist called Bill Shanley). He was as good as I had hoped! He has a new album, "Driven" to be released in July. ♥☺♥☺
I met Gilbert in 1970s in Cinderellas nightclub in Leeds, the Stringfellow nightclub. He was very levell headed on the ground.Very polite and l asked him about songwriting,he was very clever at writing no doubt. As time went on his manager Gordon Mills, which was Tom Jones and Englebert stable didn’t promote him in America. He could l think gone higher.
Oh I loved Alone Again Naturally. It was so sad but heartfelt, I normally don’t like sad songs but there are some exceptions. This was beautiful! Clair, Out of the Question, get down, etc, very talented artist and Irish. I was wondering what happened to him. Glad still around.
Alone Again is one of the most depressing songs ever written and I am amazed the BBC didn't ban it because of the suicide references . Ooh Wakka Doo Wakka Day was plain awful and A Woman's Place Is In The Home probably did his career no good at all (it was the 1970s and feminism was on the rise). But Gilbert made many classics, Nothing Rhymed, Or So They Say, Claire (who must be 50+.y.o) We Will , Get Down etc. However G O'S was a novelty in a way who wore off with the rise of disco and punk His songs are difficult to sing as he packs a lot of words in to them Gilbert didn't approve of karaoke but I suspect few would tackle them!

The Gilbert O’Sullivan Song 🎧: ALONE: Again Naturally (1972) Describes So Much That Has Also Happened In My Life. Involving Death 💀 And Disappearances In 2001 And In 2010. My Mom And My Sister.
Most of my ancestors were Irish. This song Alone Again Naturally, just showed up two week ago, thing have changed for me. No Along anymore. Teaching senior citizens art alternating every week with dancing (we were all born in the early 50's. Lovely song.
I discovered Gilbert O'Sullivan in 2009 when I picked up 'I'm a Writer Not a Fighter' at a tip (refuse center) for about 50p. I remember that first listen. It was March that year and I was sitting at the breakfast table eating a bowl of Cheerios at around 10am. My father and I were working three doors down, laying a block paved drive. I was in a good mood already and when the title track came on, the world suddenly got brighter. I only had time to listen to the first side but it made my day. I later bought 'Back to Front' but the record was scratched. For a few years IAWNAF was the only Gilbert record I listened to, though I bought 'A Stranger in My Own Back Yard' but never listened to it. When I came to China in 2011, I somehow got a digital copy of 'Himself'. I remember one cold November night walking home along a small tree lined street near work called 'Liao Cheng Road' and I listened to 'January Git' as I headed home. That may be my favorite Gilbert song. That memory is still strong and over that month, I consumed 'Himself', 'A Stranger in My Own Back Yard', 'Back to Front', 'Off Centre', 'Life & Rhymes' and 'In The Key of G'. There's no feeling like going through all of or most of an artists catalog. It's like a exploring a cave in Minecraft; you never know what you'll find!
I love Gilbert O'Sullivan; I still listen to his music. Clair was my favorite song; it came out just as I turned 12 and was able to babysit our neighborhood kids. I was in Jr high, 7th grade actually, in cooking class when I first heard Clair. I think that was in 1972.

The little chuckle was in fact made by Clair which was one of Gordon Mills children. She was sitting on her Mothers lap during the recording. Her Mother tickled her right at the end of the song!

Wow, Gilbert O’Sullivan brings back some happy days for me, with fond childhood memories of this guy’s music in the ‘70s, he is a brilliant singer/songwriter with such a distinctive style and I always loved those clever lyrics of his. So glad to see he is well and active on the music scene!

I loved his hit singles as a young teenager and have vivid memories of them - had no idea he was still working at 76!! Good on you, Gilbert. I wouldn't say you were underrated at all - you probably chose to keep a lower profile whist keeping up the good work!!

The first time heard of O'Sullivan was when Radio North Sea started up in 1970 and they picked on Nothing Rhymed, played it a lot and it seemed to me at the time that it was Radio North Sea who "discovered" him and helped to make him popular?
@@donccarlos9794 true, but the money coming from the rights would not include other amounts awarded him in the lawsuit. I understand he was upset by that part of the settlement because he was not trying to squeeze as much out of his manager as he could - just get the rights going forward.
@@AlDunbar I used to really like Gilbert O'Sullivan, his music was often compared with Elton John and I can see why. Also, right after Gilbert's lawsuit, that inspired Elton John's manager John Reid to file a similar lawsuit against Dick James, which I believe has a similar result.

When I was 14 he was my heart throb. I had posters of him on my bedroom wall. I bought every record he made. I loved him. I have not heard of him in years so I am glad to hear that he is alive and well and continues to do what he loves and is good at.
I was fortunate enough to meet Gilbert while gigging with Terry Teakettle and the Toe-tappers (Jack Hobbs on drums) back in 1974.
I loved his hit singles as a young teenager and have vivid memories of them - had no idea he was still working at 76!! Good on you, Gilbert. I wouldn't say you were underrated at all - you probably chose to keep a lower profile whist keeping up the good work!!
Love the hits of course , and I remember a song called Save It … while I love Alone again. Has there ever been a songwriter who put so many words in each line ? Great song !
And of course that other great song 'Nothing Rhymed'. I think that was his first big hit.
Love Gilbert. FANTASTIC. Pleased he is going strong!
I love Gilbert. I still try to catch him when he tours. Great talent, wonderful songs.👍🇬🇧

Huge fan here. Glad he’s still doing well
What happened? He became successful, wealthy and is alive and happy in old age. Not bad for a musician compared to many
A legend of the 70s. His music is iconic. A true Irishman. 🎶✌️☘️
Gilbert O’Sullivan’s was the first L.P. I ever bought, I was born in 1952, his songs were brilliant plus his look equates to Peaky Blinders nowadays 😂😂👏🇬🇧
He's irish 🇮🇪🙄

Awesome song writer.
The new album was released yesterday and the single featuring K T Tunstall, Take Love, is another Gilbert classic.
A proud Irish man 🇮🇪🍀
James Kelly; quite right too.👍✌️👋🇬🇧
The first time heard of O'Sullivan was when Radio North Sea started up in 1970 and they picked on Nothing Rhymed, played it a lot and it seemed to me at the time that it was Radio North Sea who "discovered" him and helped to make him popular?
Thanks Rhoda.
One of my all time favourite singer/songwriters
Saw Gilbert sing in Sydney Australia nearly 20years ago and he was amazing
As Tom Jones once said “If you shake hands with Gordon Mills, count your fingers”. He obviously wrote all that music, it all belongs to him.
Not mentioned is the fact that his suit against his manager was not so much about money as it was about the rights to his songs.
Rights = money
I saw him live in Perth Australia, a place called Mandurah Performing Arts a few years ago. Good performance.
He’s still alive and making music simple as.
Nice to see a bio of a very talented man.
Thank you kindly!
See him at the London Palladium when Clare was in the charts,he was excellent.
Was that when there was scare and we all had to vacate ?
